Is Macron Right? Is NATO, 70, Brain Dead? – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on November 27, 2019

Do we truly believe that if Russia marched into Estonia, the U.S. would start attacking the ships, planes and troops of a nation armed with thousands of tactical and strategic nuclear weapons?  Would NATO allies Spain, Portugal and Italy declare war on Russia?

Under NATO, we are now committed to go to war for 28 nations. And the interventionists who took us into Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen want U.S. war guarantees extended to other nations even closer to Russia.

NATO is a CIA tool. As long as that remains the case NATO is not going anywhere soon.

A week from now, the 29 member states of “the most successful alliance in history” will meet to celebrate its 70th anniversary. Yet all is not well within NATO.

Instead of a “summit,” the gathering, on the outskirts of London, has been cut to two days. Why the shortened agenda?

Among the reasons, apprehension that President Donald Trump might use the occasion to disrupt alliance comity by again berating the Europeans for freeloading on the U.S. defense budget.

French President Emanuel Macron, on the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice, described NATO as having suffered “brain death.” Macron now openly questions the U.S. commitment to fight for Europe and is talking about a “true European Army” with France’s nuclear deterrent able to “defend Europe alone.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose nation spends 1.4% of GDP on defense and has relied on the U.S. and NATO to keep Russia at bay since the Cold War began, is said to be enraged at the “disruptive politics” of the French president.

Also, early in December, Britain holds national elections. While the Labour Party remains committed to NATO, its leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is no Clement Attlee, who took Britain into NATO at its birth in 1949.

Corbyn has questioned NATO’s continued relevance in the post-Cold War era. A potential backer of a new Labour government, Nicola Sturgeon of the Scottish National Party, is demanding the closing of Britain’s Trident submarine base in Scotland as a precondition of her party’s support for Labour in Parliament.

Also present in London will be NATO ally Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan.

Following the 2016 coup attempt, Erdogan has purged scores of thousands from his army and regime, jailed more journalists than any other authoritarian, purchased Vladimir Putin’s S-400 missile system as Turkey’s air defense, and ordered the U.S. forces out of his way as he invaded northern Syria, killing Kurdish fighters who did the bleeding and dying in the U.S.-led campaign to crush the ISIS caliphate.

During the Cold War, NATO enjoyed the widespread support of Americans and Europeans, and understandably so. The USSR had 20 divisions in Germany, surrounded West Berlin, and occupied the east bank of the Elbe, within striking distance of the Rhine.

But that Cold War is long over. Berlin is the united free capital of Germany. The Warsaw Pact has been dissolved. Its member states have all joined NATO. The Soviet Union split apart into 15 nations. Communist Yugoslavia splintered into seven nations.

As a fighting faith, communism is dead in Europe. Why then are we Americans still over there?

Since the Cold War, we have doubled the size of NATO. We have brought in the Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania but not Finland or Sweden. We have committed ourselves to fight for Slovenia, Croatia, Albania and Montenegro but not Serbia, Bosnia or North Macedonia.

Romania and Bulgaria are NATO allies but not Moldova or Belarus.

George W. Bush kept us out of the 2008 Russia-Georgia clash over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. And Barack Obama refused to send lethal aid to help Ukraine retrieve Crimea, Luhansk or Donetsk, though Sen. John McCain wanted the United States to jump into both fights.

In the House Intel Committee’s impeachment hearings, foreign service officers spoke of “Russian aggression” against our Ukrainian “ally” and our “national security” being in peril in this fight.

But when did Ukraine become an ally of the United States whose territorial wars we must sustain with military aid if not military intervention?

When did Kyiv’s control of Crimea and the Donbass become critical to the national security of the United States, when Russia has controlled Ukraine almost without interruption from Catherine the Great in the 18th century to Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 20th century?

Among the reasons Trump is president is that he raised provocative questions about NATO and Russia left unaddressed for three decades, as U.S. policy has been on cruise control since the Cold War.

And these unanswered questions are deadly serious ones.

Do we truly believe that if Russia marched into Estonia, the U.S. would start attacking the ships, planes and troops of a nation armed with thousands of tactical and strategic nuclear weapons?

Would NATO allies Spain, Portugal and Italy declare war on Russia?

In 1914 and 1939, in solidarity with the mother country, Britain, Canada declared war on Germany. Would Justin Trudeau’s Canada invoke NATO and declare war on Putin’s Russia — for Estonia or Latvia?

Under NATO, we are now committed to go to war for 28 nations. And the interventionists who took us into Iraq, Syria, Libya and Yemen want U.S. war guarantees extended to other nations even closer to Russia.

One day, one of these war guarantees is going to be called upon, and we may find that the American people were unaware of that commitment, and are unwilling to honor it, especially if the consequence is a major war with a nuclear power.

Pompeo Gives Away the Palestinian West Bank, by Philip Giraldi – The Unz Review

Posted by M. C. on November 27, 2019

The decades long building of Israeli settlements on Palestinian homelands, with nothing but silence from Washington, should have made plain to anyone more paying attention that a 2 state solution was never in the cards.

http://www.unz.com/pgiraldi/pompeo-gives-away-the-palestinian-west-bank/

A story has been circulating suggesting that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will soon be resigning because he needs to focus on planning for his campaign to become a Senator from Kansas in 2020. This is good news for the United States, as Senator Lindsey Graham has had no one he is able to talk to about exporting democracy by blowing up the planet since Joe Lieberman retired and John McCain died. And the tale even has a bit of palace intrigue built into it, with an interesting back story as Pompeo is apparently considering his move because he fears that staying in harness with Donald Trump for too long might damage his reputation. There are also reports that he has been traveling to Kansas frequently on the State Department’s dime to test the waters, a violation of the Hatch Act which prohibits most government officials from engaging in self-promotional political activities unrelated to their actual jobs.

If one is seeking evidence to suggest that Pompeo, a man who lies with a fluency that takes one’s breath away, is delusional, it would certainly have to include his self-assessment that he has a reputation to protect. It is possible to cite many instances in which Pompeo has asserted something that is absolutely contrary to the truth, though one might also have to concede that he could often be saying what his factually challenged boss wants to hear. When Pompeo was Director of the CIA he even joked openly about how “We lied, we cheated, we stole.”

Mike Pompeo’s latest concession to the war criminals in charge of Israel, clearly intended to boost the electoral chances of Benjamin Netanyahu, is only the most recent dose of the Secretary of State’s falsehood piled on fiction. It is generally assumed that the move to help Bibi by interfering in Israeli politics has been made in an effort to have Tel Aviv reciprocate by putting pressure on its many American fellow travelers in the media and congress to go easier on Trump in the impeachment saga…

The Trump Administration’s gifts to Israel are unprecedented, including moving the capital to Jerusalem and acknowledging the annexation of the Syrian Golan Heights. Pompeo, driven by his Christian Zionist beliefs, has been the point man on many of those moves, ably assisted by a U.S. Ambassador David Friedman, ex-bankruptcy lawyer, who has served as a consistent advocate and apologist for Israel with little or no concern for actual American interests. One might also observe that if Pompeo is truly interested in running for the Senate a little help and cash from Israel and its many friends might be very welcome.

The Pompeo gift to Bibi was announced early last week. He said that the Trump Administration is now rejecting the 1978 State Department Hansell Memorandum legal opinion that the creation of civilian settlements in occupied territories is indeed “inconsistent with international law.” In a sense, he was giving something away to Israel that neither he nor the Israelis legally possess. He said that he was “accepting realities on the ground” and elaborated on his view that the White House believes legal questions about settlements should be dealt with in Israeli courts, meaning that the hapless Palestinians would have no voice in developments that would deprive them of their homes...

Who Are the Racists? – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on November 27, 2019

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2019/11/walter-e-williams/who-are-the-racists/

By

Former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke said that racism in America is “foundational” and that people of color were under “mortal threat” from the “white supremacist in the White House.” Pete Buttigieg chimed in to explain that “systemic racism” will “be with us” no matter who is in the White House. Senator Cory Booker called for “attacking systemic racism” in the “racially biased” criminal justice system.

Let’s follow up by examining Booker’s concern about a “racially biased” criminal justice system. To do that, we can turn to a recent article by Heather Mac Donald, who is a senior fellow at the New York-based Manhattan Institute. She is a contributing editor of City Journal, and a New York Times bestselling author. Her most recent article, “A Platform of Urban Decline,” which appeared in Manhattan Institute’s publication Eye On The News, addresses race and crime. She reveals government statistics you’ve never read before.

According to leftist rhetoric, whites pose a severe, if not mortal, threat to blacks. Mac Donald says that may have once been true, but it is no longer so today. To make her case, she uses the latest Bureau of Justice Statistics 2018 survey of criminal victimization. Mac Donald writes: “According to the study, there were 593,598 interracial violent victimizations (excluding homicide) between blacks and whites last year, including white-on-black and black-on-white attacks. Blacks committed 537,204 of those interracial felonies, or 90 percent, and whites committed 56,394 of them, or less than 10 percent. That ratio is becoming more skewed, despite the Democratic claim of Trump-inspired white violence. In 2012-13, blacks committed 85 percent of all interracial victimizations between blacks and whites; whites committed 15 percent. From 2015 to 2018, the total number of white victims and the incidence of white victimization have grown as well.”

There are other stark figures not talked about often. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting for 2018, of the homicide victims for whom race was known, 53.3% were black, 43.8% were white and 2.8% were of other races. In cases where the race of the offender was known, 54.9% were black, 42.4% were white, and 2.7% were of other races.

White and black liberals, who claim that blacks face a “mortal threat” from the “white supremacist in the White House” are perpetuating a cruel hoax. The primary victims of that hoax are black people. We face the difficult, and sometimes embarrassing, task of confronting reality.

Mac Donald says that Barack Obama’s 2008 Father’s Day speech in Chicago would be seen today as an “unforgivable outburst of white supremacy.” Here’s what Obama told his predominantly black audience in a South Side church: “If we are honest with ourselves,” too many fathers are “missing — missing from too many lives and too many homes. They have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men.” Then-Senator Obama went on to say, “Children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of schools and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.”

White liberals deem that any speaker’s references to personal responsibility brands the speaker as bigoted. Black people cannot afford to buy into the white liberal agenda. White liberals don’t pay the same price. They don’t live in neighborhoods where their children can get shot simply sitting on their porches. White liberals don’t go to bed with the sounds of gunshots. White liberals don’t live in neighborhoods that have become economic wastelands. Their children don’t attend violent schools where they have to enter through metal detectors. White liberals help the Democratic Party maintain political control over cities, where many black residents live in despair, such as Baltimore, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago.

Black people cannot afford to remain fodder for the liberal agenda. With that in mind, we should not be a one-party people in a two-party system.

The Invention of Modern Slavery Called Democracy – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on November 27, 2019

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2019/11/gary-d-barnett/the-invention-of-modern-slavery-called-democracy/

“All government, in its essence, is a conspiracy against the superior man: its one permanent object is to oppress him and cripple him. If it be aristocratic in organization, then it seeks to protect the man who is superior only in law against the man who is superior in fact; if it be democratic, then it seeks to protect the man who is inferior in every way against both. One of its primary functions is to regiment men by force, to make them as much alike as possible and as dependent upon one another as possible, to search out and combat originality among them. All it can see in an original idea is potential change, and hence an invasion of its prerogatives. The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane and intolerable, and so, if he is romantic, he tries to change it. And even if he is not romantic personally he is very apt to spread discontent among those who are.”

~ H. L. Mencken, A Mencken Chrestomathy

Most believe that the days of kings and queens are behind us, and that such obvious despotic rule has no place in modern times. The commoners after all, had enough of such arrogance long ago, and were getting restless. The ruling class knew they had a problem, so they came up with an ingenious idea they called democracy in order to quell the tide of discontent evident among the people. The government retained power, but easily fooled the people into believing that with democracy, they would govern themselves. This was a fool’s game from the beginning.

Yes, the government decided on democracy, and the masses in their ignorance rejoiced. They had only changed the name of the beast, and accepted slavery in a different form without realizing the error of their ways. While most believed democracy meant freedom, quite the opposite was the case. Actually, democracy, or its evil cousin, a democratic republic, is a far greater danger to liberty long-term than is a monarchy. This is because of mass deception instead of clarity…

Since people today can vote to choose their rulers, they are prisoners to what they falsely believe is national rule, an impossible absurdity on its face. If given a choice, I would always choose a monarch over rule by a few or by a majority of millions of strangers, all with a multitude of agendas. A king at least is exposed. This insane concept of voting brings with it the ridiculous and false notion that self-rule is evident. Self-rule is freedom, but in a democracy, each individual has surrendered all sovereignty to an unknown entity called the nation-state…

Those who are fooled into believing that they are free when they are not would be better off knowing that freedom did not exist in the first place. In this country, when a child is born, he is automatically owned by the state, and therefore is the property of the state. This means he is subject to extortion for life. He is issued a birth certificate, and a claim is filed stating that he is a U.S. citizen. As a U.S. citizen, he is subject to theft by the state in the form of mandatory and forcible taxation. This is simply thievery where government takes what property its citizens earn for its own nefarious use. In addition, almost nothing is allowed without a permission slip in the form of licenses issued by the state. Virtually everything is regulated, and most behavior, regardless whether anyone is harmed or not, is restricted under the threat of prosecution, incarceration, or death…

The idea of democracy and democratic government is a scam. It is corruption at the highest level and the mortal enemy of freedom and liberty. Government is criminal, fraudulent, dishonest, sleazy, and indifferent to the plight of mankind. It is a worthless endeavor, and deserves no respect. It is and has always been a conspiracy of evil against life and love. I believe what Mencken said, and I will strive to be a dangerous man, and spread discontent far and wide for as long as I can.

Maternal Care Scandal in Britain’s NHS Reveals Human Costs of Socialised Medicine | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on November 26, 2019

It is certainly tempting to believe that these terrible cases are an aberration, confined to just one or two hospitals, and based on the random mistakes of just a handful of individuals. However, the truth is that negligence and poor performance like this are a systemic problem rooted in the economic nature of government-run industries, and the perverse incentives they face.

https://mises.org/wire/maternal-care-scandal-britain%E2%80%99s-nhs-reveals-human-costs-socialised-medicine?utm_source=Mises+Institute+Subscriptions&utm_campaign=df43b34789-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_9_21_2018_9_59_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8b52b2e1c0-df43b34789-228343965

…In a sense, it is hardly surprising that so little attention has been paid to real world examples of universal healthcare, such as Britain’s National Health Service, given the histories of underperformance, scandal, and perpetual crisis associated with many such systems…

A new page was added to this troubled history by the recent revelation, courtesy of a leaked internal report, of what is being called the worst maternity scandal in the history of Britain’s NHS. The report revealed that, in a single NHS trust over the period 1979–2017, unchecked clinical malpractice and neglect by doctors, midwives, and hospital bosses led to the avoidable deaths of at least 42 babies and three mothers, while 50 more children suffered permanent brain damage as a result of being deprived of oxygen during birth. The report also identifies 47 other cases of substandard care. These are only the preliminary findings from a set of 600 cases currently under investigation, with most of those cases still awaiting assessment, so the final numbers can be expected to be higher.

Although these cases occurred over a 38 year time period, it is worth bearing in mind that these are the findings from just one of the 470 NHS trusts, the subsidiary administrative units that oversee NHS operations in a particular geographical area or specialised function. The report examined cases only from the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which consists of just two hospitals, one maternity unit, and one community clinic.

Senior NHS sources are already calling this the worst maternity scandal in the history of the NHS, a title which had previously belonged to the Morecambe Bay scandal. That previous scandal, which came to light only four years ago, revealed the avoidable deaths of 11 babies and one mother between 2004–2013, in a single NHS hospital.

If a government begins providing a given service free at the point of use, this will tend to crowd out private provision of that service, even if private provision is not outright banned, as politicians such as Elizabeth Warren have advocated banning private health insurance in the US. In Britain, for example, even though private health insurance is entirely legal, only around 10.5% of the population actually engage with the private insurance market at all. This is partly due to governments’ unique ability to divert huge quantities of real resources toward themselves using the non-voluntary methods of taxation and fiduciary media creation, which precludes those resources from being used by private providers in a way which might have more fully satisfied consumer preferences…

Another economic problem inseparable from government provision of services free at the point of use is its removal of incentives to prioritise the desires and well-being of the customer. Some readers might be skeptical that this problem would apply to healthcare: sure, removing profit, loss and payment by customers in an ordinary business might diminish the ‘customer is king’ attitude, but surely healthcare workers feel morally bound to provide the best care possible, regardless of economic incentives?

Sadly however, healthcare workers are not immune from such economic forces, as was illustrated clearly by this recent NHS maternity scandal. Far from being a result of innocent mistakes and unfortunate circumstances, the leaked report points to negligence and a complete disregard for the well-being of patients as having caused many of the avoidable deaths. The report highlights a failure to monitor high-risk mothers and newborns, as well as a “chronic inability to learn from past mistakes”, and a general culture that is “toxic to improvement”. The report further points to “a distinct lack of kindness and respect” shown toward bereaved parents and families, with multiple examples of deceased babies being referred to by the wrong name, or described as “it”. In one particularly shocking case, the body of a deceased baby, after having received a post-mortem examination, was simply left to decompose “for a period of weeks”, to the point that the mother was unable to see her child for a final good-bye before burial.

This shocking indifference to patients and hostility to improvement is an inescapable consequence of the economic incentives introduced when government crowds out competition and provides services free at the point of use. It remains to be seen whether American voters will lend their support to the nationalisation of healthcare that their politicians are increasingly advocating. However, if such a policy is pursued, the voting public should not be under the illusion that the final outcome will be as simple and benevolent as they are being told.

Governments Created Too Many Criminals. Now They Want More Regulations to “Solve” the Problem | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on November 26, 2019

But the way governments are going about correcting the problem it is all wrong.

In Detroit for example, the new “ban the box” law imposes a wide variety of new regulations on landlords as to what they can and cannot ask applicants about a potential criminal past.

Ironically, if the landlord doesn’t adhere to these new rules, he or she can be convicted of a criminal offense.

The State of Massachusetts has enacted a similar law for employers, which brings fines for violations which often manifest themselves as asking the “wrong” questions on job application forms, or asking the wrong questions at the wrong time in the application process.

https://mises.org/wire/governments-created-too-many-criminals-now-they-want-more-regulations-solve-problem?utm_source=Mises+Institute+Subscriptions&utm_campaign=2f661cc9f9-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_9_21_2018_9_59_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8b52b2e1c0-2f661cc9f9-228343965

Increasingly in recent years, criminal-justice-reform activists in states and cities have been campaigning for what is known as “ban the box.” This is an effort to enact new laws and ordinances prohibiting landlords and employers from asking applicants about their criminal histories. The idea is that far too many rehabilitated former criminals are unable to find work or rent an apartment thanks to “the box” on application forms that asks about criminal convictions.

It’s not difficult to by sympathetic to this effort. Thanks to the War on Drugs, millions of Americans have been convicted of various drug-related “crimes” and other small-time offenses that have been increasingly turned in felonies and other criminal offenses.

The Heritage Foundation has noted that federal crimes with stiff penalties have been growing for years, and the Illinois Policy Institute notes that the state has spent enormous sums jailing people under the Class 4 Felony statutes which cover small-time offenses.

As Justin Murray has has explained at mises.org, the United States is fairly unique in the severity of its punishments. Many crimes that bring long jail sentences in the United States are dealt with through fines and rehabilitation programs in many other parts of the world — with better results.

A wide variety of non-violent offenses are routinely transformed into serious crimes by lawmakers, and many aren’t even drug related. For example, in a 2015 report from Connecticut’s state Office of Legislative Research, we find numerous examples from being a pawnbroker without a license or permitting a minor to work in violation of state labor laws.

Many violations like these were once misdemeanors, but now carry heavy fines and even years of prison time.

The idea that people guilty of such petty offenses ought to be cut off from most employment will strike many people as excessive.

The City of Seattle has enacted a similar measure.

In jurisdictions that have adopted such measures, civil investigations and penalties are pursued in a manner similar to fair housing investigations in cases of landlords — and employment discrimination investigations in cases of employers.

This opens up business owners to a variety of new lawsuits based on allegations of discrimination, and these laws have the potential to add significant burdens to businesses. This is especially true for small businesses without substantial human resources staff.

Moreover, these measures limit the abilities of employers and landlords to make decisions that are most appropriate to their specific situations, needs, customer base, and existing staff.

The Real Solution

It’s unfortunate that governments have seen fit to make landlords and business pay the price for what is a problem created by governments.

The reason so many Americans have criminal records is because too many offenses have been criminalized. The answer to this problem, therefore, lies first in de-criminalizing drug use and other small-time offenses. The second step is to expunge all criminal records related to these non-crimes.

Colorado, for instance, has finally begun to move toward erasing old pot convictions, more than seven years after recreational use of marijuana was legalized. Illinois has moved even faster toward expunging these records now that the state is set to legalize recreational marijuana in 2020.

In a more reasonable world, this process should be expanded as other petty offenses are also decriminalized.

If policymakers are concerned that too many people are wrongly being permanently branded as criminals, then those same policymakers should stop increasing the number of crimes. Instead, they should be exploring ways to turn many felonies back into the misdemeanors they once were. Or, when there is no victim, legalizing the activity completely.

This, of course, would put no additional burden on businesses or landlords. It wouldn’t require investigations to ensure private owners are asking the right questions. It won’t lead to more criminal convictions for those suspected of discriminating against criminals.

But as is so often the case, the “easy” solution is to simply impose more regulations, fines, and penalties on the private sector. This “solution,” of course, will do nothing to address the real underlying problem.

Corporate Executives Try to Assess Potential Impact of Tax Change Proposals

Posted by M. C. on November 26, 2019

A global tax. How many tens of thousands of pages of regulation do you suppose that will generate.

Every page dripping with fairness. The end result will be our bleeding.

Corporations don’t pay taxes, they collect them.

Consumer facing-means the military-industrial-government-bankster complex conveniently will not be burdened.

When you hear a politician say “the corporation pays the tax, the citizen will never feel it” you know this person is totally ignorant, lying scum or more likely both.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/corporate-executives-try-to-assess-potential-impact-of-tax-change-proposals-11574312460

Corporate tax chiefs are trying to assess the potential implications of a proposal for a new global tax system for consumer-facing businesses, an effort that is being complicated by what some companies describe as a lack of critical details.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which is running the initiative, was scheduled to meet Thursday and Friday in Paris to discuss a proposal that would set a standard tax rate for a company’s global operations and allow individual governments to tax profits above that based on sales accounted for by each country.

The new rules would represent a departure from current regulations that look at where companies are based and where they hold patents and brands.

Dubbed the “unified approach,” the rules would apply to companies with annual revenues of more than €750 million ($830 million) in consumer-facing industries, a broad term that includes technology companies—which have been in the spotlight for their tax practices—and other firms selling services and goods to consumers…

Quotation of the Day… – Cafe Hayek

Posted by M. C. on November 26, 2019

I ask innocently, when has it been a good idea to “bridle” a person like a horse? [Thomas] Piketty’s idea is to bridle most people so that some people will not become rich. It is a mistake.

https://cafehayek.com/2019/11/quotation-of-the-day-2989.html

by Don Boudreaux on November 26, 2019

… is from page 155 of Deirdre McCloskey’s 2019 excellent book, Why Liberalism Works: How True Liberal Values Produce a Freer, More Equal, Prosperous World for All:

The danger is that each new generation will not realize how good for the poor the Bourgeois Deal has been, and will forget how bad the earlier deals have been – the Bolshevik Deal, for example, in which the government takes over the railways and the electric companies and the newsagents and the newspapers and your employment, and everything else. Or the Bridle Deal, in which excessive regulations work against “unbridled” commercially tested betterment. I ask innocently, when has it been a good idea to “bridle” a person like a horse? [Thomas] Piketty’s idea is to bridle most people so that some people will not become rich. It is a mistake.

DBx: Yes. And, by the way, neither the reality nor the significance of the historical lessons to which Deirdre above refers can be made to disappear by uttering “Ok Boomer.”

The Washington Post, as It Shames Others, Continues to Pay and Publish Undisclosed Saudi Lobbyists and Other Regime Propagandists

October 15 2018,

In the wake of the disappearance and likely murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, some of the most fervent and righteous voices demanding that others sever their ties with the Saudi regime have, understandably, come from his colleagues at that paper. “Why do you work for a murderer?,” asked the Post’s long-time Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, addressing unnamed hypothetical Washington luminaries who continue to take money to do work for the despots in Riyadh, particularly Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, or “MbS” as he has been affectionately known in the western press.

Hiatt urged these hypothetical figures to engage in serious self-reflection: “Can I possibly work for such a regime, and still look at myself in the mirror each morning?” That, said Hiatt, “is the question that we, as a nation, must ask ourselves now.”

wapo-khashoggi-1539616581

Fred Hiatt’s column in the Washington Post.

But to find those for whom this question is directly relevant, Hiatt need not invoke his imagination or resort to hypotheticals. He can instead look to a place far more concrete and proximate: his own staff. Because it is there – on the roster of the Washington Post’s own columnists and Contributing Writers – that one can find, still, those who maintain among the closest links to the Saudi regime and have the longest and most shameful history of propagandizing on their behalf.

Carter Eskew is a former top-level adviser to Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign and a Founder and Managing Director of Glover Park Group which, according to the Post’s own reporting, is one of the Saudi regime’s largest lobbyists. Glover Park, says the Post, has “remained silent amid growing public outrage over reports that Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi Consulate.” Indeed, as the New York Times reported this week, Eskew’s firm, “which was started by former Clinton administration officials,” is the second-most active lobbying firm for the Saudi regime, “being paid $150,000 a month.”

In addition to his work as a Managing Director in one of the Saudi regime’s most devoted lobbying firms, Eskew is also a Contributing Opinion Writer at the Washington Post. His last column was published just three days ago, on October 12 – ten days after Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey, and the same day that Eskew’s editor, Hiatt, published his righteous column demanding to know how anyone with a conscience could maintain ties to the Saudi regime (raising a separate but equally important ethical quandary, Eskew’s last Post column was an attack on “Medicare for All,” even though Glover Park clients include corporations with direct financial interests in that debate, none of which was disclosed by the Post)…

Worse still, according to a noble campaign promoted by Karen Attiah, the Post’s Global Opinion Editor and friend of Khashoggi – a campaign designed to keep track of and shame those who still intend to participate in the Saudi Crown Prince’s “Davos in the Desert” event – Eskew, along with fellow Glover Park Director Mile Feldman, are still scheduled to speak at that event. Given all the moral decrees and shaming campaigns the Post has issued over the past ten days, how can they possibly justify their ongoing relationship with Eskew as his firm lobbies for the Saudi regime and he attends the regime’s P.R.-building event?

That question is even more compelling when it comes to Ed Rogers, the long-time GOP operative who is currently an Opinion Writer for the Washington Post. In addition to his work for Hiatt on the Post’s Op-Ed page, Rogers himself receives substantial financial rewards for his work as an agent of the Saudi regime. Just two months ago, the lobbying firm of which he’s the Chairman, BGR Group (headed by former RNC Chairman and GOP Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour), signed a new contract that includes “assist[ing] the Saudis in communicating priority issues regarding US-Saudi relations to American audiences including the media and policy communities.”

According to the firm’s own press release, “BGR chairman Ed Rogers” – also an Opinion Writer for the Washington Post – “handles the Saudi work.” Like Eskew, Rogers’ last column for the Post was on October 12: just two days ago, the same day Hiatt published his moralizing column demanding to know how anyone with a conscience and a soul could maintain financial ties to the Saudi regime…

But the Washington Post’s particular righteous fury as expressed in words, while understandable in one sense, is very difficult to reconcile with their actual actions, including their ongoing relationship with numerous individuals who either work directly for the Saudi regime, financially benefit from propaganda and lobbying work performed on their behalf, or have a history of taking the lead in doing P.R. work for Saudi tyrants under the guise of journalism. Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, who oversees all of this as he tries to shame others for maintaining relationships with the Saudis, failed to respond to any of the Intercept’s inquiries regarding these multiple ethical and behavioral contradictions.

Updated: October 16, 2018, 7:37 a.m. EDT
On Monday night, Hiatt emailed the Intercept and told us that “both lobbying firms” in which Washington Post writers are partners (Glover Park and BGR) “have ended their contracts with Saudi Arabia.” He pointed to this Washington Post story, published late Monday afternoon, reporting that “The Glover Park Group notified the Saudi Embassy in Washington that is was canceling its two-year-old contract to represent the kingdom, according to a person with knowledge of the move” and “separately, the GOP-founded lobbying powerhouse BGR Group, which had an $80,000-a-month contract with the Saudi government, announced it was also dropping the kingdom as a client.” The announcements of these contract cancellations came after The Intercept published this story. Hiatt did not respond to any of the other inquiries posed to him.

Russia And China Are Apparently Both Under The Impression That War With The United States Is Coming… – The American Dream

Posted by M. C. on November 26, 2019

http://endoftheamericandream.com/archives/russia-and-china-are-apparently-both-under-the-impression-that-war-with-the-united-states-is-coming

Could it be possible that the U.S. is heading for a major war?  If you ask most Americans that question, they will look at you like you are crazy.  For most people in this country, war with either Russia or China is not something to even be remotely concerned about.  But the Russians and the Chinese both see things very differently.  As you will see below, Russia and China both seem to be under the impression that war with the United States is coming, and they are both rapidly preparing for such a conflict.

Let’s start with Russia.  After repeatedly slapping them with sanctions, endlessly demonizing their leaders and blaming them for just about every problem that you can imagine, our relationship with Russia is about the worst that it has ever been.

And when the Trump administration announced that it was withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, that pushed things to a new low.  In the aftermath of that announcement, Russian official Andrei Belousov boldly declared that “Russia is preparing for war”…

He said: “Here recently at the meeting, the United States said that Russia is preparing for war.

“Yes, Russia is preparing for war, I have confirmed it.

“We are preparing to defend our homeland, our territorial integrity, our principles, our values, our people – we are preparing for such a war.”

Here in the United States, there is very little talk of a potential war with Russia in the mainstream media, but in Russia things are very different.  Russian news outlets are constantly addressing escalating tensions with the United States, and the Russian government has been adding fuel to that fire.  For example, the Russian government recently released a video of a mock nuclear strike against their “enemies”…

Russian submarines have recently carried out a mock nuclear attack against their “enemies.” The Russian government has released footage of the atomic strike and it is sparking fears that the third world war is quickly approaching.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) has published shocking videos that show a range of nuclear missile drills including a submarine carrying out a mock atomic strike. These videos are the latest in a series of escalating war-games ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to The Express UK.

I’ll give you just one guess as to who the primary enemy in that drill was.

And what Russian President Vladimir Putin recently told the press about a potential nuclear war was extremely chilling…

If any nation decides to attack Russia with nuclear weapons, it may end life on Earth; but unlike the aggressors, the Russians are sure to go to heaven, President Vladimir Putin has said.

“Any aggressor should know that retribution will be inevitable and he will be destroyed. And since we will be the victims of his aggression, we will be going to heaven as martyrs. They will simply drop dead, won’t even have time to repent,” Putin said during a session of the Valdai Club in Sochi.

Under normal circumstances, Putin would never talk like that.

But these are not normal times.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping is ordering his military to focus on “preparations for fighting a war”…

China’s President Xi Jinping ordered the military region responsible for monitoring the South China Sea and Taiwan to “assess the situation it is facing and boost its capabilities so it can handle any emergency” as tensions continue to mount over the future of the South China Sea and Taiwan, while diplomatic relations between Washington and Beijing hit rock bottom.

The Southern Theatre Command has had to bear a “heavy military responsibility” in recent years, state broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi as saying during an inspection tour made on Thursday as part of his visit to Guangdong province.

“It’s necessary to strengthen the mission … and concentrate preparations for fighting a war,” Xi said. “We need to take all complex situations into consideration and make emergency plans accordingly. “We have to step up combat readiness exercises, joint exercises and confrontational exercises to enhance servicemen’s capabilities and preparation for war” the president-for-life added.

So who are the Chinese concerned that they may be fighting against?

Needless to say, the United States is at the top of the list…

The president instructed the military to ramp-up opposition to ‘freedom of navigation’ exercises being undertaken by the US, Australia, France, the UK, Japan and others through the waterway through which arterial shipping lanes have grown since the end of World War II.

Tensions over the South China Sea have been increasing for several years, and starting a trade war with China in 2018 has certainly not helped things.

At this point, even many U.S. analysts can see the writing on the wall.  For instance, just consider what Harvard Professor Graham Allison recently told Steve LeVine…

He said, if history holds, the U.S. and China appeared headed toward war.

Over the weekend, I asked him for an update — specifically whether the danger of the two going to war seems to have risen.

“Yes,” he responded. The chance of war is still less than 50%, but “is real — and much more likely than is generally recognized.”

Of course we didn’t get to this point overnight.  Tensions with Russia and China have been simmering for quite a while, and both of those nations have been rapidly modernizing their military forces.  For much more on this, please see my recent article entitled “Russia And China Are Developing Impressive New Weapons Systems As They Prepare For War Against The United States”.

Sadly, the vast majority of the U.S. population is utterly clueless about these things.

But those that are serving in the military have a much better understanding, and one recent survey found that about half of them expect the U.S. to be “drawn into a new war within the next year”…

We should hope for peace, but throughout human history peace has never lasted for long. Major global powers continue to edge closer and closer to conflict, and that is a very dangerous game to be playing.
