The rise of mis- and disinformation on social media and an increasing perception of bias in the reporting of legacy media outlets has led to trust in media institutions declining over the past years.

As Florian Zandt shows in the chart below, based on a recent Statista Consumer Insights survey of 38 countries shows, people’s trust or distrust of the media differs by geographic region.

Remembering the blues legend Willie Dixon born #onthisday!

Posted by M. C. on July 1, 2024

My Favorite Composer of the Classics

Don’s Tunes

Remembering the blues legend Willie Dixon born #onthisday! For four decades, Willie Dixon loomed at the forefront of Chicago blues, working as a bassist, arranger, band leader, producer, talent scout, agent, A&R man, and music publisher. His most enduring contributions, though, were the songs he wrote. Dixon made Muddy Waters the “Hoochie Coochie Man,” taught Howlin’ Wolf “Evil” and “Spoonful,” and showed Sonny Boy Williamson how to “Bring It on Home.” “Willie Dixon is the man who changed the style of the blues in Chicago,” said Johnny Shines, a regular on the scene. “As a songwriter and producer, that man is a genius. Yes, sir. You want a hit song, go to Willie Dixon. Play it like he say play it, and sing it like he say sing it, and you damn near got a hit.” Early on, the Rolling Stones established their blues credentials with Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and scored a 1964 Top-20 hit in the U.K. with their slide-driven reading of his “Little Red Rooster.” While making a name for himself in London, Jimi Hendrix thrilled BBC listeners with his otherworldly cover of “Hoochie Coochie Man.” Cream, with Eric Clapton on guitar, transformed “Spoonful” into a classic power trio jam. Clapton’s peers, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, each covered two Willie Dixon songs on their first post-Yardbirds albums, Beck and Rod Stewart doing “You Shook Me” and “I Ain’t Superstitious” on Truth, and Page featuring “You Shook Me” and “I Can’t Quit You Baby” on the first Led Zeppelin album. Back home in the U.S., Dixon’s songs easily crossed over into rock, with noteworthy covers by the Doors, Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and many others. He’s doubtlessly the only composer in history to have his songs covered by Styx, Queen, Oingo Boingo, PJ Harvey, and Megadeth. – Jas Obrecht Photo: Michael Ochs Archives

Confusion in the Land of Cheese

Posted by M. C. on July 1, 2024

if you live in France, keep your 12-year-old daughter at home, as there are two weeks to go.

Taki

Ooh là là, there’s an election about to take place in the land of cheese and everyone’s commenting about it as if North Korea suddenly decided to go democratic. French elections are like the cancan: always the same, with high kicks and hopes for smaller parties ending like the dance, doing splits on the floor and the usual suspects back in power.

Tensions were intensified after the attack and rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl by boys her age, boys The New York Times and other media failed to identify. What I’m willing to bet my bottom dollar is the three boys aged 12 and 13 are Muslims, born in France and brainwashed since birth. Muslim outrages against French institutions, churches, and synagogues take place as regularly as the Tour de France, yet so politically correct is France no one as yet (that I’m aware of) has named the three perpetrators as Muslims.

And yet something I cannot put my finger on is bothering me. The slaughter in Gaza has Muslims the world over up in arms. The largest Jewish community in Western Europe is in France. The extreme left leads a coalition that has condemned the slaughter in Gaza, while the right, led by Marine Le Pen, is now Israel’s greatest supporter. Switch over to the Big Bagel for a moment, where a pro-Israel group has just sunk $14.5 million in a campaign to dethrone a black congressman whose views on Israeli bombardment of Gaza were deemed immoderate.

“An anti-Semitic left and a nationalist populist right is a brand-new twist in French politics.”

Almost 15 million big ones have flooded the TV channels against an obscure congressman of the Bronx–Long Island constituency who was quite moderate in his criticisms of the Israeli overkill. Filling television screens, stuffing mailboxes, and clogging telephone lines, AIPAC and other pro-Israeli groups are using the same approach elsewhere. The message to politicians everywhere in the United States is as follows: Being pro-Israel is not just a wise policy, it’s also smart politics that will keep you in Congress.

Now I ask you, dear readers. What kind of democracy is it when an extremely rich minority can spend enough moola to actually impose its will on the many? If I go any further it will be called anti-Semitism, or better yet pro-Nazi. The irony is that the congressman the Jews are after, Jamaal Bowman, is not very smart—having been caught red-handed opening a fire door and triggering the alarms in order to stop a vote in the House recently. His great sin was to demand Uncle Sam stop sending 2,000-pound bombs to Israel to drop on Gaza. Bowman does not have much money coming his way, and he is as likely to be reelected as I am to win a Pulitzer for this article, but such are the joys of standing up for what one believes.

And now back to the land of cheese and why did I bring in Bowman and AIPAC and all that dreary money stuff? Unlike in America, where the Israeli lobby, AIPAC, and the Anti-Defamation League are always alert where anti-Semitism is concerned, France is a Catholic country that has a rather so-so past with her Jewish citizens: Dreyfus and Vichy are the first to come to mind. The place of Jews in French society has emerged as a prominent theme in the election because of the once falsely accused as anti-Semitic National Rally party of Marine Le Pen—her father made an unfortunate remark very long ago that always comes up the moment the party is mentioned—whose anti-immigrant position lies at the core of its growing popularity. Le Pen now backs Israel since the Hamas attack of October 7.

Really Think About What It Means That The US President Has Dementia

Posted by M. C. on June 29, 2024

It’s very revealing how everybody’s focusing on what Biden’s dementia-addled debate performance says about his ability to win re-election instead of on the fact that the current, sitting president of the United States has dementia.

But the conversation has almost entirely revolved around Joe Biden as a presidential candidate, with relatively little attention going to the fact that this person is the president right now. Everyone’s talking about whether Biden can assure American voters that he has what it takes to be president, and nobody seems all that concerned about the fact that he is already president and will remain so for half a year.

It is embarrassing, at least to me, that the our “superpower” nation elected an obviously troubled person to the presidency. Admittedly Biden has always been a doofus so maybe those inclined to vote for him didn’t notice.

The scary question is who is the replacement. Michelle, Newsom, Killary, Schumer…feeling queazy? Third parties looking better? https://www.votechaseoliver.com/

It’s very revealing how everybody’s focusing on what Biden’s dementia-addled debate performance says about his ability to win re-election instead of on the fact that the current, sitting president of the United States has dementia.

If you were lucky enough to have missed the debate, Biden was so confused and zoned out that not only did CNN’s audience overwhelmingly say Trump won while the word “dementia” was sent trending on Twitter, but it was also uniformly acknowledged to have been a horrifying catastrophe by Democratic Party operatives and liberal media pundits, who are now widely suggesting that the president should withdraw from the race.

What this suggests is that people already kind of know on some level that the president of the United States doesn’t really run the United States, but are still mentally compartmentalized away from this reality enough to care who wins the presidential election.

If people really believed the president runs the country, they’d be freaking out that Biden in his demented haze might order an attack on the Soviet Union or nuke Libya to kill Muammar Gaddafi or something. They’re not worried that this will happen because they know their government is actually being run by unelected empire managers from behind the scenes, and that Biden is just the official face on the operation.

So in order to hold their mainstream worldview together, liberals are simultaneously straddling the two completely contradictory concepts that (A) it doesn’t matter who the president is because the country is actually run by unelected empire managers, and (B) that Biden’s debate performance was very concerning because it means Trump will become president.

If they let go of (A) then they’re no longer in the mainstream worldview where their country works how they were taught it works in school, and if they let go of (B) then they’re no longer in the mainstream worldview where presidential elections are super duper important and all their country’s problems are the result of Americans voting incorrectly. So they straddle them both and try not to think too hard about the obvious contradictions between them, in order to avoid the crushing cognitive dissonance they’d experience if they looked at them too closely.

Insider Trading… Why Politicians Can Do It and You Can’t

Posted by M. C. on June 28, 2024

Is the use of insider information ethical? The government says, “No!” I say, “Absolutely, whenever the data is honestly gained, and no confidence is betrayed by disclosing or using it.” The whole concept of inside information is a floating abstraction, a witch hunter’s dream, and a bonanza for government lawyers looking to take scalps.

There’s a reason why everybody who stays in the upper echelons of government for a few years emerges someplace in between extremely comfortable and extremely rich. The revolving door between big business and government is very convenient.

A perfect example of this is Janet Yellen, who accepted $7 million worth of speaking fees from banks just before she became the US Secretary of Treasury. It was obviously a payoff.

By Doug Casey

International Man

International Man: What exactly is insider trading? Is it inherently unethical?

Doug Casey: The term insider trading is nebulous and as open to arbitrary interpretation as the Internal Revenue Code. A brief definition is to “to trade on material, non-public information.” That sounds simple enough, but in its broadest sense, it means you are a potential criminal for attempting to profit from researching a company beyond its public statements.

When the SEC prosecutes someone, it can cost millions of dollars in legal fees to defend against them. And as with most regulatory law, concepts of ethics, justice, and property rights never even enter the equation. Instead, it’s a question of arbitrary legalities.

Whether someone is prosecuted of insider trading is largely a question of who he is. A maverick researcher and a powerful government official will tend to get very different treatments. It’s also a question of the psychology and motives of the prosecutor. Insider trading is generally a non-crime that can be used in a Kafkaesque manner by upward-mobile prosecutors.

Insider trading should, at best, be the basis of a tort suit by a company if a board member betrays a trust. It shouldn’t be a crime prosecuted by the State.

Any ethical problem shouldn’t be about how information is used or who profits but whether it’s acquired honestly. Whether information is “inside” has no moral significance as long as it is honestly acquired. The market is a register of information, and impeding the free flow of knowledge in any way makes it less efficient. A morass of regulation only opens the door to real corruption. This is nothing new. Tacitus correctly said “The more numerous the laws, the more corrupt the State.”

In addition, the very concept of insider trading is ridiculous from a practical point of view. Someone always gets the information first. If an announcement is made, the people in the room who hear it first act on it first. By the time it’s published, it’s old news. It’s physically impossible for everyone to get information at the same time.

Insider trading has never cost shareholders a penny. Other actions taken by management insiders have, however, cost shareholders many billions. Regardless of the rhetoric, the name of the game in hostile takeovers and proxy battles is often management versus the shareholders. But that’s a story for another time.

International Man: In the past, politicians in Congress and elsewhere have allegedly engaged in insider trading with impunity.

Meanwhile, the penalties inflicted upon regular citizens can be severe. The maximum criminal penalty for insider trading is 20 years in prison and a $5 million fine.

What is your take on this?

ESCALATION: Biden to officially deploy American military contractors to Ukraine as WWIII looms

Posted by M. C. on June 28, 2024

https://www.naturalnews.com/2024-06-27-biden-deploys-american-military-contractors-ukraine-wwiii.html

Supposedly to help speed up the maintenance and repair of the American weapons systems being used by the regime of President Volodymyr Zelensky, the administration of President Joe Biden is planning to deploy American military contractors to Ukraine.

Four United States officials familiar with the matter reportedly told CNN that the policy is still being worked on and has not yet been signed by President Biden.

“We have not made any decisions and any discussion of this is premature,” one regime official told CNN. “The president is absolutely firm that he will not be sending U.S. troops to Ukraine.”

In what looks a whole lot like a smokescreen, CNN appears to be framing the narrative on Biden’s behalf by “leaking” the news while at the very same time quoting a source that insists the news is not what it seems.

To send U.S. military contractors to Ukraine represents another violation of Russia’s red line. And yet, the Biden regime continues to push the limit while claiming that “U.S. troops” are not, nor will they ever be, sent to Ukraine.

While some might argue that military contractors are not the same as troops, the fact remains that the U.S. is still directly involved in the conflict and increasingly so with moves like this.

(Related: Speaking of Biden, CNN is covering for him by issuing a gag order on its exclusive coverage of the upcoming presidential debate.)

Pentagon to green light contracting American companies to operate in Ukraine

As the powers that be (TPTB) lose control over the abomination known as the Western financial system, they have to do something to keep their corporations afloat and in control. This is why the Pentagon is soon expected to start awarding contracts to American companies so they can operate inside Ukraine.

Officials say the green light will go at some point in 2024, marking the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022 that Washington will make a big move like this to try to transfer its illegitimate assets from the U.S. to Ukraine.

The craziest ‘pro-Israel’ votes on the Hill today

Posted by M. C. on June 28, 2024

Congress is in rare form even for this issue

Two of the amendments seek to “prohibit funds” appropriated in the bill from being spent on holding Israel accountable for any violations of U.S. law.

https://responsiblestatecraft.org/congress-israel-palestine/

Blaise Malley

In the more than seven months since Israel’s war on Gaza began, the Biden administration has been almost entirely deferential to the war effort, providing Tel Aviv with $6.5 billion worth of weapons, offering rhetorical and diplomatic cover, and holding Hamas wholly responsible for the inability to strike a ceasefire deal.

To some members of Congress — mostly Republicans — this level of support for Israel does not go nearly far enough.

This week, the House of Representatives will be voting on the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs appropriations legislation. Among the 75 amendments to the bill that were made in order and will be voted on are a series of anti-Palestinian proposals that seek to eliminate any appearance of balance in the United States’ approach to the war.

Two of the amendments seek to “prohibit funds” appropriated in the bill from being spent on holding Israel accountable for any violations of U.S. law.

One, introduced by Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) “Prohibits funds from enforcing Executive Order 14115,” which Biden announced in February of this year as a way to sanction individuals or groups who the administration deemed “undermining peace, security and stability” in the West Bank. The effort was widely seen as an effort to punish extreme Israeli settlers — as of March, nine Israelis have been sanctioned under the law — but in June the U.S. also sanctioned a Palestinian armed group.

The other, introduced by Reps. Andy Ogles (R-TN) and Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), would block “the use of funds from being used to administer or enforce National Security Memorandum 20.” NSM-20 is the memo issued by Biden in February that required the administration to receive written assurances that recipients of American military aid were complying with international law — in essence, ensuring that no one is using our weapons while committing atrocities, including blocking aid and medicine from getting to civilians.

The first report issued to Congress under this memorandum found that Israel had not violated the law in war conduct or in the distribution of international law. The directive would require the State Department to issue a new report each fiscal year.

Both Executive Order 14115 and NSM-20 call on Israel to do the bare minimum to comply with U.S. law, and critics, including in Congress, have argued that the administration has not gone nearly far enough in administering them.

How exactly Congress could “defund” either of these operations is not exactly clear, but both of these are likely intended as symbolic messages that the United States should not do anything that could in any way constrain Israel as it carries out its war.

The Unjust Conviction of an Innocent Man: The Ian Freeman Case, Part 1

Posted by M. C. on June 28, 2024

Prilotsky told Freeman that he was in the car business. It was a lie. In fact,  Prilotsky was an agent of the Internal Revenue Service who had been assigned the  task of secretly investigating whether Freeman was committing any crimes in his  bitcoin business,

by Jacob G. Hornberger

Part 1 | Part 2 [to be published]This article is about the unjust conviction of an innocent man — Ian Freeman.
[Click to Tweet]

If one googles the name “Ian Freeman” and “bitcoin,” the result will be hundreds  of articles describing Freeman as a “fraudster.” That’s because immediately after  Freeman’s sentencing in a criminal case in a U.S. District Court in New Hampshire  on October 2, 2023, the U.S. Attorney’s office in New Hampshire sent out a press  release in which Freeman was labeled a “fraudster.”

There is one big problem, however, with that description: Freeman was never  convicted of fraud, and the U.S. Attorney’s office knew that when it sent out that  press release on the day of his sentencing.

That’s not to say, however, that there wasn’t any evidence of fraud in Freeman’s  trial. There was, but it was fraud committed by the U.S. government official whose  testimony the U.S. Attorney used to secure a conviction of Freeman on a bogus  charge of “money laundering.” Although the jury found Freeman guilty of money  laundering based on the sworn testimony of that agent, the federal judge presiding  over the trial, Judge Joseph Laplante, as we see later in this article, threw out that  finding of guilt and acquitted Freeman of the money-laundering charge.

Nonetheless, Freeman was convicted on other charges — conspiracy to engage in  money laundering, failing to register his bitcoin business with the federal  government, conspiring to fail to register his bitcoin business with the federal  government, and income-tax evasion, all of which, as we will see later in this  article, were as bogus as the money-laundering conviction that the judge rightly  threw out.

In short, this article is about the unjust conviction of an innocent man — Ian  Freeman — who is now serving an eight-year jail sentence that was meted out to  him by the same judge who threw out that bogus money-laundering conviction.

But this is also an article that goes far beyond a detailed analysis of a very complex  criminal prosecution in a federal district court, because it also places this criminal  case in a much larger context, one that goes a long way toward explaining the dark  statist morass into which our nation has plunged. That necessarily will mean a very  long, multipart article, one that will not only explain in detail the wrongful  conviction of the 43-year-old Ian Freeman but also review the historical, political,  legal, and economic context in which an innocent man has been wrongfully  convicted and sentenced to serve a very long time in a federal penitentiary.

The Federal Fraudster

In September 2019, a man named Pavel Prilotsky began purchasing bitcoins from  Ian Freeman. We will examine later the nature of bitcoins and how and why  Freeman got into the business of selling them, but for now, we are simply going to  focus on the fraud in which Prilotsky engaged in an effort to entrap Freeman into  committing a crime.

Prilotsky told Freeman that he was in the car business. It was a lie. In fact,  Prilotsky was an agent of the Internal Revenue Service who had been assigned the  task of secretly investigating whether Freeman was committing any crimes in his  bitcoin business, specifically income-tax violations, money-laundering offenses,  and violations of bank-secrecy regulations.
