Tough customer. His accident kept him down only about 6 weeks. His resumption of the ’76 schedule shocked everyone. He would have been champ in ’76 if he hadn’t retired because of rain in Japan. That put him on Enzo’s shit list. It surprising that Niki stayed with Ferrari for another (championship winning) year.
A championship winning come back with McLaren after 3 years retirement is unheard of. The closest I can come up with is Mike Hailwood’s come back at the Isle of Man TT.
Then came success in his much loved field of aviation and finally motorsport management.
He allowed himself only minimal cosmetic surgery because “this is who I am”.
Looks like fuel and plastic fumes from Nurburgring finally got him.

Lauda, who won titles in 1975, 1977 and 1984, was hugely admired, respected and liked within F1 after a remarkable career during which he won two titles for Ferrari and one for McLaren and came back from an horrific accident that left him severely burned and injured in 1976. He competed in 171 races and won 25. He also actively pursued business interests including his own airline and went on to have senior roles in F1 management, most recently as non-executive chairman at the hugely successful Mercedes since 2012, where he helped bring Lewis Hamilton to the team…
