Walter Block: What Hans-Hermann Hoppe gets wrong about Javier Milei

Posted by M. C. on April 30, 2025

Is Milei perfect? No. No one who puts his pants on one leg at a time can attain such a status. But he is far and away the best thing that has happened to the movement for liberty and economic freedom in a long, long time. All libertarians should tip their hats to him and wish him God speed. No, correction: the entire world should do so.

By Walter E Block

The president of his country, Javier Milei, is the last best hope for Argentina, and not only in terms of its economics, which promises to be profound. He also introduces for the first time in a long time a sense of ethics and propriety to that neck of the woods. Totalitarianism and socialism are simply morally wrong, not merely only non-efficacious, ineffective, uneconomical. In addition he constitutes a healthy shot in the arm for the psychological well-being of the citizens of this nation. He demonstrates, over and over again, the personal mental benefits of freedom, justice and private property rights. In so doing, he improves their well-being in many other dimensions as well, and immeasurably so.

But the benefits of his efforts will not be limited, by any means, to Argentina alone. And not only to all of Central and South America either. The entire world will be his oyster. If he can rescue Argentina with free enterprise, and so far he is on a direct path to do so, the entire world will be more likely to accept laissez faire capitalism than ever before.

One would think that with so much at stake, all advocates of libertarianism would salute him, would thank him, would congratulate him, would support him, would organize ticker-tape parades in his honor.

If you thought that, you are due for a rude awakening. Hans-Hermann Hoppe, a leading libertarian, instead, cocks a snook at this miracle worker. (I use that phrase advisedly. What else can we call it; imagine, radical free enterprise emanating from the very top of the political system!). Hoppe gives Milei the back of his hand. He criticizes him for doing too little, too late. Why, the president of Argentina has been in power for serval months now, and this nation has still has not yet reached the Galt’s Gulch level of free market capitalism of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” opines Hoppe, in effect.

This world class Austrian economist and libertarian theoretician simply does not understand how difficult it is to turn around a country mired in inflation, socialism, fascism, egalitarianism, wokeism, interventionism, regulationism, price controls.

Milei Is Little More Than a Political Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing: Beware the False ‘Libertarian’ Hype

Posted by M. C. on April 27, 2024

By Gary D. Barnett

He made many claims while campaigning for the highest position in government, something no real anarchist could ever carry out, making promise after promise to free the people, and make them prosperous, while claiming he would tear down the very government he was seeking to control. Hypocrisy at this level is saved for the most corrupt among us, as no sane or honest person could pull it off without losing his soul. What that means of course, is that he had no soul to begin with,

“And thus I clothe my naked villainy
With odd old ends stol’n out of holy writ;
And seem a saint, when most I play the devil.”

William Shakespeare, Richard III

How easy it seems to me that people are so readily deceived, and that extreme gullibility among the masses remains as the primary attitude evident. I do realize that this is not uncommon, but it is amazingly confounding, after thousands of years of continuous lies by the ruling State; absurdity beyond reason to be sure. But still they vote to choose (have selected) a master to lord over them. Will this idiocy never end? Now, there is a new ‘Saint’ in town, and as depicted by weak-minded so-called freedom advocates, he is alluded to as a ‘self-described’ Anarcho-capitalist. This is Javier Milei, the new god of ‘libertarian’ type posers. Murray Rothbard would roll in his grave at such an idiotic pronouncement as this.

Yet another politician, the lowest form of human possible, is lauded and bowed down to by the fake alternative crowd, who claim to be the freedom society of the peasant class. Those being fooled by these deceitful political imposters have become tiring to say the least, as one after another of these trimmers takes his place at the top of the power pyramid, only to affect his personal and political desires on others, and sees his need for power over the many as his highest purpose. This is always at the expense of his subject class. There are many of these plotting chameleons who reach high positions of power; Trump comes immediately to mind, but in fact, there will always be more to come, as they gleefully follow in the footsteps of their duplicitous predecessors.

This Milei character is no different, but he has been able to trick the alternative media into a frothing state of undue worship, and has taken center stage by storm, even in the face of complete and total contradiction. First and foremost, he is certainly no Anarcho-capitalist. That term is reserved for true anarchists who abhor government and the State, and capitalists, who in the real sense of the word, believe only in actual free markets; meaning private markets without government or government interference or control. Milei is neither of these things, and in fact is the exact opposite. This can be easily uncovered by merely observing every action he has proposed, mandated, or initiated.

What that means of course, is that he had no soul to begin with, but was seeking a position that he was at the same time condemning. This is a common practice of politicians, and is double-speak of course, but could only be meant to fool the weak-minded proletariat, and claimed ‘intellectual’ liberty frauds, and never be a sincere objective. The proof is in his actions, and they are oh so telling of lies, corruption, manipulation, and power-seeking.

Are You an Enemy of the State?

Posted by M. C. on January 17, 2024

By George F. Smith

Paine lacked even the distinction of being regarded as a hero.  As I wrote in an earlier essay, “The man who inspired the country to secede from a corrupt state had six people in attendance at his funeral [in 1809], none of whom were dignitaries.”

Much later, Teddy “warmonger” Roosevelt famously described Paine as “a filthy little Atheist.”  It was a false characterization, but most people neither know nor care that it is.

Donald Trump, Julian Assange, Alex Jones, and Rudy Gulianni are in deep trouble with the US state.  How about you?

Most likely you feel safe because your voice hasn’t attracted a large following.  What would the state’s enforcers gain by attacking a little guy?  They’re big game hunters.  Pull the plug on the big guys and their everyday followers float away like bathtub water down a drain.

Possibly you believe you aren’t really attacking the state with your social media posts, just the corrupt regime currently in power.  As long as your words don’t go too far off the rails you think trouble will leave you alone.

That’s the theory, at least.

Most libertarians are not Rothbardians.  They think the state is necessary but needs to be slashed, not done away with —  much like the heroic Javier Milei is doing in Argentina.  Their comfort zone is a minimalist state, and they write or lecture from that position.  As such these people are explicit defenders of the state per se and therefore cannot be considered enemies of the state.

The SWAT team hacking at your door could care less.

Why would they pick on you, an inconspicuous promoter of seditious thoughts?  The big guys have money and influence to defend themselves.  You have nothing.   You would be at their mercy, and they have no mercy.  Would you stand your ground or crumble like a shack during a hurricane?  Would you wave your First Amendment rights at their weapons or would you forget your own name?  Your story would shake the social media world, exactly their reason for attacking you.

Is it really worth your life defying the state?

In June 1989 Tank Man stood in front of a column of Chinese tanks as they advanced on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to crush a student protest.  No one knows who he was or what happened to him.  Yet for a few tense minutes he stopped the progression of the tanks by holding his hand up before being swept away by Chinese officials.  He did this in daylight, while in full public view.  Most people are asleep at six in the morning when the SWAT boys come knocking.

Don’t think being an unarmed senior citizen will protect you.  Or a 5’2” unarmed woman.  As Dr. Simone Gold told Lifesite News,

It was dramatic and what I want to say is that I weep for our country. If you can pull in a person like me … [and] have the FBI break down your door with 20 guns, shackle you [in] handcuffs [and] drag you off, I mean it was really terrible … I’m telling you America, this can happen to you.

The firebrand Thomas Paine

So What Do ‘Libertarians’ and the ‘Right-Wing’ Think of Milei Now?

Posted by M. C. on December 9, 2023

By Gary D. Barnett

Milei also chose Santiago Bausili as the new central bank head. (I thought there was to be no central bank?) Bausili also worked for JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank in debt, capital markets, and of course, derivatives, in markets covering Argentina, Chile, and Peru. This looks like old home week for Argentina, as the same guys responsible for the past destruction of the economy will be back in the saddle along with Milei,

One can dream, can’t one?

“You can sway a thousand men by appealing to their prejudices quicker than you can convince one man by logic.”

Robert A. Heinlein, Revolt in 2100/Methuselah’s Children

I warned just after the recent Argentina election, that Javier Milei was not as advertised, and in fact, that he was no different than other politicians. Many condemned my criticism of their new political ‘hero,’ as latching on to any chance for ‘change’ by ignorant and duped voters, is always the imbecilic response by those voluntarily seeking a master to rule them. As I write this just two weeks later, and before he has even taken office, much has already changed, exposing corruption, and political reality that is eternally present. But given the circumstances surrounding all the hype of this self-described new ‘libertarian’ and ‘anarcho-capitalist,’ it seems prudent to expose all the contradiction that surrounds Milei, his Cabinet appointments, his immediate back-tracking, and his connections and supporting cast worldwide, even before he is inaugurated. I think this very important because of so much interest and support coming from the U.S., especially the ‘libertarian’ crowd, and much of the alternative media, whose feigned passion for the people, while at the same time promoting the advancement of freedom through the ballot box, creates a false dichotomy of epoch proportion.

I am not writing this specifically as a hit piece against Javier Milei, but against all ruling class types who claim to be the saviors of the people, by seeking and accepting State power to wield over them. I am only pointing out the gross double-speak, contradiction, and hypocrisy that is so common with all in the political class, government, and any who desire to rule over others, as they can never be trusted. So to be fooled into their trap of propaganda, only requires giving trust without scrutiny, and expecting (hoping for) a desired outcome before it is proven, based only on extreme rhetoric, false promises, political pledges, and bombastic and pompous displays of theatre. All these things are useless, and an assault on the intellect of any able to think for themselves, but given that the ability to think critically is now a very minority position, one can see why those choosing to rule have such an easy time fooling the crowd. Milei’s campaign was little more than a circus-like psychological takeover of the empty minds of those looking for a savior in a crowd of fraudulent criminals.

Those Who Fall for the ‘Right Wing/Libertarian-Leaning’ Election Madness Are Acting as Absolute Fools!

Posted by M. C. on December 5, 2023

By Gary D. Barnett

There are several labeled ‘right-wing’ candidates being touted as saviors by the maniacal herd, especially those blind ‘pro-freedom’ pretenders, who continue to trust the State and the heinous and fraudulent political process, while leaping on the band wagon with both feet of every single candidate promising them to do it right this time. It would be difficult to find a more pathetic exercise than this, but at least it is eternally predictable.

“I have never voted in my life… I have always known and understood that the idiots are in a majority so it’s certain they will win.”

Louis-Ferdinand Céline

Here we go again. Each side of the coin being flipped is the same; both sides indicating parties of evil. It is the same game as always, and the same stupid people jump on board because this time, things will be different, and your guy will fix everything. This story is as old as time, but gets even more idiotic each and every election, as even more historical evidence and fact exposing the voting scam are easily obvious, showing the pure idiocy of voting for a master. For the thousandth time, doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different outcome, but finally, the good guy is here to save you. What a crock of crap is this, and how can any sane, thinking individual, fall into that same trap every election, without once understanding that he is in a circular game of hysterical lunacy?

There are several labeled ‘right-wing’ candidates being touted as saviors by the maniacal herd, especially those blind ‘pro-freedom’ pretenders, who continue to trust the State and the heinous and fraudulent political process, while leaping on the band wagon with both feet of every single candidate promising them to do it right this time. It would be difficult to find a more pathetic exercise than this, but at least it is eternally predictable. If human nature is nothing else, it is a showcase for hypocrisy and gullibility, and in light of this current trend, those falsely calling themselves ‘libertarians,’ anarcho-capitalists,’ staunch ‘conservatives,’ and fighters for freedom, are all showing their bare asses in broad daylight. It is a sad sight to be sure.

There have been several of these claimed freedom ‘pretenders,’ immigration ‘warriors,’ monetary fixers, and free-trade imposters, who have been recently elected around the world, and the faux alternative media sites have bought the hype hook, line, and sinker, without once standing in any light of reality. For purposes here, let us concentrate on just one of these trimmers; the most flamboyant in fact, although they all can be lumped together concerning much of their ridiculous rhetoric.

Javier Milei has captured the hearts and minds of most all those who loudly pretend to oppose the State, while believing that the answer to freedom lies with the State. No, I did not make that up, it is the common attitude accepted every time a new face says the ‘right’ things when attempting to gain great power as a ruler in a State system, while at the same time, promising to tear down that same system. This time is no different, and this is so simple to point out and see, but it belies imagination that most people who vote for their next ruler, never learn anything at all from thousands of years of mistakes. All these candidates are Statists, whether they claim that status or not, so are their supporters really fooled, or are they exposing their real character and lack of intellectual reasoning, by embracing complete contradiction?

Milei has said that he will “blow up the central bank” in Argentina, but how is he supposedly going to achieve that goal? He states that he will eliminate central banking, but he has no plans whatsoever to use any free market in money. He also said he would name a new central bank head, and would appoint a new economic team, which is a total contradiction of his statements, leaving government in charge of all monetary policy. While saying he will tear down the central banking system, he is mandating the use of the U.S. dollar. The U.S. dollar is a failing currency, but is also dependent on the most evil central bank in the world, so in essence, Milei is planning on partnering with the most powerful and criminal central bank to affect ‘his new system.’ He has not mentioned any free market alternative that the people could freely choose themselves, as he wants to force ‘his’ choice as the only choice. This is an extremely complicated process, and the problems that will arise would likely be monumental. These consequences could easily cause more major economic problems. While Argentina is in the midst of economic hell, a common problem that has plagued that country for decades, all due to government control and corruption, will this change simply due to a different government controlling everything? I think not.

Milei has also said he will cut ties with Russia, China, and Brazil, but does that not eliminate markets for all Argentinians, all at the whim of Milei? He claims to be ‘libertarian,’ but also an ‘anarcho-capitalist.’ This must be a big lie. An anarcho-capitalist would necessarily have to rely on being an anarchist, which means no rule, but did he not just seek rule, and win rule, and now plans to put ‘his’ policies in place by fiat?

Doug Casey on How Milei Could Make Argentina a Beacon of Freedom and Prosperity

Posted by M. C. on December 2, 2023

by Doug Casey

Doug Casey: Milei’s election is a big deal—potentially a very, very big deal. He’s the first declared anarcho-capitalist in history to head any country. And not by stealth. He, all the while, said that the State is the enemy and should be abolished. Anarcho-capitalists believe that society can run itself without a State, which is a formalized instrument of coercion.

Javier Milei and Argentina

International Man: Javier Milei made history by becoming the world’s first anarcho-capitalist president.

What is the historical significance of his victory? Are you optimistic?

Doug Casey: Milei’s election is a big deal—potentially a very, very big deal. He’s the first declared anarcho-capitalist in history to head any country. And not by stealth. He, all the while, said that the State is the enemy and should be abolished. Anarcho-capitalists believe that society can run itself without a State, which is a formalized instrument of coercion.

It’s unprecedented for somebody to be elected to run a State that he wants to abolish. And propose that if it continues to exist, it should only have the police, military, and the courts. And even those should be privatized.

Am I optimistic?

Looking at it from a long-term point of view, for the last hundred years, individual freedom has been diminishing, and State power has grown hugely all over the world. What’s worse is that the trend is accelerating. Many countries are on the ragged edge of turning into socialist or fascist dictatorships.

That includes the US. Since Reagan left office, all of our presidents have been disasters of various types, with the current regime being the worst yet. In Argentina, the Peronists have run the country completely into the ground over the last 75 years.

Of course, maybe Milei’s election is just an uptick in a continuing downtrend because you can’t change a country’s national philosophy overnight. But destroying a State apparatus infested by Peronists, socialists, fascists, and other horrible parasites is a good start. If he can pull the apparatus of the State out by its roots, not just trim it back, the result might last for quite a while.

I’m encouraged by the fact that young people and poor people are among his biggest supporters. They recognize that they’re the ones who the State damages the most. Could Argentina be the start of a worldwide trend towards free minds and free markets?

Since I prefer to believe humans are basically decent, I can’t help being optimistic—even if cautiously. He’s going to get lots of resistance from the Deep State, unions, the media, welfare queens, and other “usual suspects.”

International Man: Perhaps there is no issue more important in Argentina than money.

Milei has promised to “burn down the central bank” and replace the peso with the US dollar. He has made statements favorable to eliminating all legal tender laws and allowing whatever commodity the free market would choose as money—though he hasn’t articulated his exact plans.

What do you think Milei should do regarding the money issue? What are the risks of adopting the US dollar and not having any monetary alternatives?

Doug Casey: First of all, he totally understands the government shouldn’t be in the money business. I know that shocks most people to hear, but trusting the government with money is like trusting a teenager with a Corvette and a bottle of Jack Daniels.

Javier’s Milei’s Populist Strategy in Argentina Is Working | Mises Institute

Posted by M. C. on September 20, 2023

Regardless of whether the charismatic Milei ultimately wins the election, his campaign has sparked a young and powerful libertarian movement. His triumph in the primaries may be more significant than the Ron Paul Revolution of 2008 and 2012. The incredible fact is that he is successful.

https://mises.org/power-market/javiers-mileis-populist-strategy-argentina-working

Philipp Bagus

The Austro-libertarian movement has the better ideas. They continue to be discussed, elaborated, and intellectually defended. But how can the right ideas be implemented? What good is it to be right if the reality is left-wing? In fact, most of the population, or at least public opinion, seems to be drifting further and further to the left, with cancel culture, climate hysteria, a sprawling welfare state and ever higher taxes and levies.

The right ideas and theories are there, but they have not yet been put successful in practice. How can this be changed? Of course, ideas are important, they must also be disseminated, from below, from the grassroots up. It’s an arduous process. And there has been undeniable progress in recent years. Nevertheless, the left-wing zeitgeist is rolling over the freedoms of citizens almost unhindered; most shockingly during the Covid crisis. The left tries to paint anyone who stands in the zeitgeist´s way as an extremist or even a Nazi.

Against this background, what can a successful strategy look like? Murray Rothbard addressed this question in an article in the Rothbard-Rockwell Report entitled Right-Wing Populism: A Strategy for the Paleo Movement. His contribution is groundbreaking and forward-looking. He anticipates the successes of Donald Trump in the United States and, more recently, of Javier Milei in Argentina.

Javier Milei is making a splash on all sides, because on August 13, 2023, he won the primaries for the presidency in Argentina. In the German media, he is described as ultra-right and ultra-libertarian. Recently, the Financial Times dealt with the self-confessed anarcho-capitalist in a column, in which the author insinuated that the libertarian Milei would follow the strategy of right-wing populism designed by Murray Rothbard in 1992. This gives rise to the question if that claim is true and what exactly is this right-wing populism?

According to the paleo-libertarian Rothbard, the program of right-wing populism includes 8 main points:

  1. Radical tax cuts
  2. Radical reduction of the welfare state
  3. Abolition of privileges for “protected” minorities
  4. Crushing criminals
  5. Getting rid of bums
  6. Abolition of the Federal Reserve
  7. A program of America First (anti-globalist and isolationist)
  8. Defending traditional family values

Indeed, Milei’s election manifesto is very much in line with Rothbard’s right-wing populism and paleo-libertarianism. Milei wants to radically reduce taxes. He never tires of calling taxes what they are, theft.

He also wants to radically grind down the welfare state and likes to illustrate the reduction in government spending and his proposal of reducing Argentinian ministries from 18 to 8 with a chainsaw. His “Chainsaw Plan” is intended to radically trim the state.

Doug Casey on the World’s First Anarcho-Capitalist President

Posted by M. C. on August 30, 2023

Doug Casey: It could be the most dramatic thing that’s happened politically since at least World War II. Anywhere. Why? Because he’s an AnCap libertarian who’d like to abolish the State—or come as close as possible.

International Man: Milei has called central banking and fiat currency a historical fraud. He has vowed to “burn down the central bank” and replace the peso with the dollar and whatever commodity the free market would choose as money. He is favorable to precious metals and Bitcoin.

International Man: Anarcho-capitalist Javier Milei recently won Argentina’s presidential primary. He is now the undisputed front-runner in the upcoming elections.

The outcome took many by surprise. Milei is an outsider who bested the country’s two entrenched establishment parties.

How did this happen, and why should anyone outside of Argentina care?

Doug Casey: It could be the most dramatic thing that’s happened politically since at least World War II. Anywhere. Why? Because he’s an AnCap libertarian who’d like to abolish the State—or come as close as possible. If he’s elected in October, he’ll make every move possible to eliminate—not just reduce—as many government departments as possible as quickly as possible. And most people seem oblivious to it.

Milei was in first place in the primary. Historically, in Argentina, the person who wins the primary wins the general election. There’s only been one exception to that rule. Even more encouraging is his ratings have gone up from 30% to 40% since the primary. It appears his campaign is not just a flash in the pan but a trend that’s building momentum.

Argentina was one of the most prosperous countries in the world a hundred years ago when it was about as free as any country economically. Before Peron, the Argentine GDP equaled the rest of the continent put together. But since the accession of Juan Peron in 1946, it’s consistently gone downhill every year.

Why might that be?

Peron was an overt fan of Mussolini and fascism. Fascism—a word coined by Mussolini—is defined as the complete subordination of corporations and business to the State. After WW2, the word “fascism” was a no-no, so the system was rechristened “Peronism” in Argentina. It’s not a consistent philosophy; it has many mutations. It’s all about businessmen and politicians using each other, through the State, to get rich. The lower classes are made dependent, and the middle class is impoverished. Fascism has little to do with militarism and jackboots; it’s an economic system. Almost every country in the world is fascist today—including the US, the EU, China, and Russia.

Despite the triumph of Peronism, Argentina still has the most classically liberal traditions in all of Latin America. It’s always been the most outward-looking country in Latin America. I’ve always believed it was the most fertile ground for a pro-individual liberty revolution in Latin America. Now, that may be happening.
