As a minor subplot, rational geopolitical actors are asking what sort of national security advisor would strategically “advise” his boss to blow up a multilateral, United Nations-endorsed, working nuclear deal?

Breaking the unwritten rules of global diplomacy, the Trump administration is now in violation of the multilateral Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or in plain language the Iran nuclear deal. Nuance is notoriously absent in what can only be described as a unilateral hard exit. 

All suspended United States sanctions against Iran will be reinstated, and harsh additional ones will be imposed.

It does not matter that the International Atomic Energy Agency, orIAEA, repeatedly confirmed Iran was complying with the JCPOA as verified by 11 detailed reports since January 2016. Even US Secretary of Defense James Mattis vouched for the stringent verification mechanisms.

Facts appear to be irrelevant, though. The JCPOA is the Obama administration’s only tangible foreign policy success, so, for domestic political reasons, it had to be destroyed. Read the rest of this entry »

Netanyahu’s performance shows why Iran nuclear deal needs to remain, by Patrick Cockburn – The Unz Review

By highlighting Iran’s past ambitions to construct a nuclear device. Mr Netanyahu unintentionally demonstrated – as several architects of the 2015 deal have commented – the need for the JCPOA, which made it impossible for Iran to build a nuclear weapon.

…Though the disclosure was made in order to justify President Donald Trump torpedoing the Iran nuclear deal on 12 May, Mr Netanyahu was unable to find any evidence that Iran has breached the agreement signed in 2015.

The vast cache of files presented by Mr Trump are largely historical and relate to the period before 2003. Mr Netanyahu’s purpose was to pillory Iran for lying about a nuclear weapons programme 15 years ago and before.

The White House has had some difficulty in adjusting its rhetoric to the historical nature of the disclosures, saying at first that they were proof that “Iran has a robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program”, but later changing “has” to “had”… Read the rest of this entry »

Dumb Moves Have Consequences, by Philip Giraldi – The Unz Review

This article was written before Benjamin Netanyahu came out with his Powerpoint presentation of lies and half truths to justify demonizing Iran over its non-existent nuclear weapons program. He failed to mention that Israel has a 200 nuke arsenal undeclared and is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iran has no weapons, is a signatory and is subject to unannounced inspections of all its sites.

The analysis of the recent exchanges between French President Emmanuel Macron and President Donald Trump suggest that Washington is most likely about to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement with Iran that was signed by the U.S. and five other governments in July 2015. The decision will likely be made public before the deadline on re-ratifying the agreement, which is May 12th. Nikki Haley Attacks Iran, Forgets Her Country Is Currently Bombing Seven Nations – American Herald Tribune

On December 14, Haley once again disgraced herself on the international stage, when she displayed a missile that she claimed Iran delivered to rebels in Yemen. This, she warned darkly, was just further evidence of Iran’s nefarious purposes.

During this speech, delivered inside a military hanger in Washington, D.C., she made this amazing statement: Iran’s “ballistic missiles and advanced weapons are turning up in war zones across the region.”

Is it possible that she is either not aware of the fact, or is trying to distract from it, that the U.S.’s ‘ballistic missiles and advanced weapons are turning up in war zones across the region’? The U.S. is currently bombing seven nations. Read the rest of this entry »
