NFL Embraces LGBTQ+, Gun ‘Ban’, Jan. 6, Other Liberal Causes While Ignoring Conservative Views

Posted by M. C. on June 16, 2022

Interestingly, neither the Commanders nor the NFL has mentioned that several of these pride events included drag queen story time sessions for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, in which the drag queen shows the children how happy same-sex couples look in a story book.

This isn’t about fairness or equality, this is unabashed PC woke pandering to avoid being “cancelled” by advertisers and suffering mostly peaceful barn burnings.

The NFL tolerates dog torturers also but that is another story.

The NFL during the 2022 offseason? It is admittedly about big trades (Davante Adams, Matt Ryan), big contracts for receivers (A.J. Brown, Adams, Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs and others), and big contracts for the stars (Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald) who helped the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl.

The NFL of the 2022 offseason is, in other words, much about what we’ve all come to expect of the most popular sports league in America.

But it’s also about some other things.

Controversial things.

Divisive things.

Things the league would have never touched a generation ago or perhaps even a few years ago. Things that enchant half the country and enrage the other half.

And, apparently not coincidently, the side always enchanted is the political left. And the side the league routinely enrages is the political right.

This isn’t an opinion. There can be no debate about this.

This is fact with today’s NFL.

And the league isn’t hiding from this in any way. It’s out in the open about what it supports. Just look at the NFL’s Twitter account.

The pinned tweet is promoting LGBTQ pride month. Except the NFL doesn’t just say it’s celebrating pride month. It says “we are proud to support and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community every day, not just in June.”

The NFL then outlines the number of inclusive marketing efforts it has undertaken under the auspices of its “Football is Gay” campaign.

The NFL says football is gay. Think about that.

Not football is football. And certainly not faith, family and football.

Surprised? Another Hate Crime Hoax Exposed | The Libertarian Institute

Posted by M. C. on August 31, 2021

And then, two months after the school’s nationwide hate-crime humiliation, Bucknell announced that a university-commissioned independent investigation by law firm Cozen O’Connor “found no evidence that the students outside of Fran’s House on May 13 were motivated by bias against the residents and their affinity as an LGBTQ+ community.”

by Brian McGlinchey

In mid-May, news broke of a disturbing incident at Bucknell University: Outlets across the country reported that, on the eve of final exams, a mob of 15 to 20 intolerant male students had victimized the school’s LGBTQ community via an attack on a residence hall established as a “safe space” for community members.

The intruders were members of a former Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) fraternity chapter that was shut down in 2019 over hazing violations. Before hosting the “Fran’s House” LGBTQ residential group, the building at the center of the disturbance was TKE’s decades-long home at Bucknell.

Students living in the house said the TKE brothers banged on doors and windows, yelling, “Let us in…this isn’t your home…this is our home.” One apparently exposed himself; someone allegedly urinated on the porch.

That same evening, the house’s residential advisor published a lengthy and emotionally-charged open letter to Bucknell President John Bravman, recounting how the experience of “20 inebriated former fraternity members harass(ing) the LGBTQ+ community” left his “legs shaking with adrenaline.”

On the morning after the disturbance, Bucknell raced to issue a statement condemning what it called a “horrific incident.”

In a fateful contradiction, the university simultaneously promised an independent investigation to ascertain the facts while embracing the assumption that this was an attack on the LGBTQ community.

“We cannot erase the ugliness and subsequent trauma of last night’s transgression against the students of Fran’s House and, implicitly, many others, but we can commit to addressing it in a way that protects LGBTQ Bucknellians and better ensures their safety in the future,” said the statement issued by Bravman along with the school’s provost and its associate provost for equity and inclusive excellence.

Bucknell’s dramatically-worded embrace of the hate crime narrative poured gasoline on the public relations fire. By characterizing the episode as a “horrific incident” against LGBTQ students that left administrators “sorrowful,” the university handed journalists and editors just what they needed for sensational, click-inducing coverage.

Stories erupted at the nation’s most prominent outlets, with headlines describing a shocking hate crime at the highly selective Pennsylvania school:

  • The New York Times: Bucknell Investigating “Horrific” Harassment of LGBTQ Students
  • USA Today: Bucknell University Condemns “Horrific” Attack on LGBTQ Residence: “We Are Outraged and Sorrowful”
  • The Washington Post: “Horrific” Attack on LGBTQ House Sparks University Investigation

Social media lit up with indignation. A professor arranged for people to take shifts standing guard outside the house. Students organized a “solidarity march against toxic masculinity.” TKE’s national office condemned the incident as an “act of intolerance.”

Good luck finding that news at the Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, NBC News, CNN, Fox News, New York Post, The Hill, Boston Globe, The Advocate, New York Daily News, Insider Higher Ed, Los Angeles Blade, Yahoo News, Buzzfeed, Seattle Times and countless other outlets that pushed the false, Bucknell-encouraged hate crime angle.

TGIF: FDA Targets Black and Other Minority Smokers | The Libertarian Institute

Posted by M. C. on May 14, 2021

Let’s be clear on what is going down. The central government wants to stop certain minority smokers from indulging their preferences. That’s paternalism pure and simple. Apparently blacks and others who prefer menthol smokes cannot be persuaded to stop, so they will have to be forced–for their own good. A far higher percentage of black smokers than white smokers prefer menthol to unflavored cigarettes.

by Sheldon Richman

Just when we are reminded that unnecessary conflict between the police and the people, especially in poorer black communities, is a poison to be eliminated forthwith, the Biden administration has moved in the wrong direction. Late last month the administration signaled that it wants to ban menthol cigarettes, which are especially popular with black smokers.

“Banning menthol—the last allowable flavor—in cigarettes and banning all flavors in cigars will help save lives, particularly among those disproportionately affected by these deadly products,” Acting Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Janet Woodcock said. “With these actions, the FDA will help significantly reduce youth initiation, increase the chances of smoking cessation among current smokers, and address health disparities experienced by communities of color, low-income populations, and LGBTQ+ individuals, all of whom are far more likely to use these tobacco products.”

For years the FDA had been pushed on this issue by a coalition of organizations, including some self-identified black advocacy groups, although other similar groups, along with the ACLU, have opposed the ban. The FDA has finally agreed to the ban. It will take time to put it in place because of the public-comment process.

Strangely, this is occurring during the height of concern about unjustified police violence against black men and women. As we know, product prohibition always prompts the creation of illegal markets, and this breeds a poisonous relationship between police and the communities in which the illegal activities are most likely to occur. The reason couldn’t be simpler. Unlike with crimes of violence against person and property–that is, offenses with victims–vice laws attempt to stop consensual transactions. Since those transactions by nature have no complainant, the police inevitably resort to intrusive, rights-violating methods to catch people in the act. The methods include surveillance, use of dodgy informants with have incentives to lie and set people up, and other trickery. It couldn’t be any other way. If laws against victimless “crimes” are to be enforced, the most egregious enforcement methods will be brought to bear as a matter of necessity. It’s in the very nature of the legal suppression of vice. (I’m including gambling, drugs, prostitution, and so on.)

Considering that minority community trust in the police is is not exactly high, why would anyone want to give the police more authority to root out consensual interaction? It can only make things worse.

Anticipating this criticism, the FDA promises it will not target consumers; only manufacturers and distributors will be in the authorities’ sights. But that statement is misleading. Plenty of damage can be done at the street level if the manufacturers and distributors of illegal menthol cigarettes turn out to be small-scale neighborhood operations, which they may well be. (Why would highly visible Big Tobacco take the risk?) If people demand menthol smokes, other people will creatively cater to their demand. Remember Eric Garner’s fatal encounter with the police when he was illegally selling individual cigarettes (“loosies”) presumably to get around the high New York tobacco tax. In Massachusetts, which has already banned menthol cigarettes, the black market is reported on the rise. When police efforts to stop black-market manufacturers and distributors fail, will the police turn on consumers? Stamping out demand (if it could be done) would surely stamp out supply.

This can’t end well. For one thing, a ban on one product could morph into a ban on other items that contribute to the production of originally targeted product.

And let’s keep in mind the larger context. While the government says it’s trying to save smokers from themselves, it also demonizes vaping and has outlawed most vape flavors. True, the exceptions to that ban (for now?) are tobacco and menthol flavors, but still the FDA has made efforts to scare smokers from switching to vaping, which is known to be much safer than inhaling the smoke from burning tobacco leaves. If smokers are scared away from vaping, many will stick with smoking, menthol or no menthol.

Meanwhile the FDA is also looking into lowering the nicotine content of cigarettes to “nonaddictive levels,” a futile act of mere signaling since smokers could simply smoke more cigarettes to make up their nicotine deficit.

When will government learn? Actually, that’s the wrong question. Officials have no incentive to take seriously many things they must already know because it would cost them their mission, power, and prestige.

Abolition of all vice laws should be step number one in any effort to eliminate unjustified police violence. Forbidding the state’s officers from looking for outlawed but consensual transactions couldn’t help but create a better relationship between the police and the people, especially those in the most vulnerable communities.
