Sports DEI

Posted by M. C. on May 30, 2023

One last thing. DEI has all but banned ACT and SAT scores in academia. Why? That is because certain demographic groups do better, far better, than other demographic groups. Nor has this “gap” narrowed, despite heroic efforts for this to be done on the part of the wokists. What solution have the politically correct forces instituted to deal with this obvious injustice? Why, of course, to ban ACT and SAT scores in academia.

WALTER BLOCK

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has been sweeping the nation. It has been applied to all sorts of institutions, albeit, preeminently, education. It is time, it is past time, that this initiative be spread out, even further. To wit, it should be introduced into the realm of sports.

According to DEI, the reason whites do better at earning wealth, educational attainment, employment, more stable families, incarceration rates, STEM occupations, etc., has nothing to do with ability, IQ levels, studiousness, work ethic, or anything else of that sort. Rather, it is all due to white racism. It is a little difficult to reconcile that claim with the undeniable fact that Orientals outstrip Occidentals in most of these dimensions, but let that pass. We do not want to assess DEI theory too harshly here. Instated, we want to apply it to the realm of athletics.

How would that work? First, let us consider professional basketball.

The percentage of black players is 73%, while they comprise only some 13% of the overall population. Whites make up 17% of these splendid athletes, but 76% of the total population. Asians? They comprise 0.4% of the NBA but 6% of all people in the US. Thus, blacks are highly overrepresented, while whites and Orientals are significantly underrepresented.

How can we account for these statistics? According to the DEI philosophy it has nothing to do with the fact that “white men can’t jump.” Rather, the culprit here, wait for it, I hope you’re sitting down while you read this, is black racism. Caucasians and Asians have just as much ability, on average, as do Africans and African Americans, but the latter just won’t allow them into the game to the degree that their abilities would warrant. Black athletes are just mean spirited. These world class sports pros are in effect hogging the ball. True, virtually all of the teams are owned by whites and as per usual, the buck stops at the top. But we’re going to ferret out black racism wherever it lies, with neither fear nor favor, and according to the DEI principles, it rests squarely with this demographic.

A similar analysis applies to football, where the players, disproportionately to their share of the total population, favor blacks (71%) over whites (25%). Data for track and field, marathon running is harder to come by, but eyeball experience indicates that blacks are keeping whites at “the back of the bus” to an even greater extent in these activities too.

However, when it comes to swimming and hockey (93% white), matters reverse. Here, at last, we find the evils of “white supremacy.” There are hardly any blacks with important accomplishments in either venue. This of course has nothing to do with black disinterest or lack of ability in either sport. No, we again utilize the DEI premise that all races are equally able in all dimensions. Expert economist Thomas Sowell says otherwise, over and over again, with evidence you could knock an elephant over with, but what does he know? If there are any differences in success rates it must necessarily be due to racism. Anyone who denies this is himself a racist. QED.

What are we then to make of the fact that too few basketball and football coaches are of African descent? Only seven out of 29 head NBA coaches were black last year. According to National Basketball Players Association executive director Michele Roberts “These numbers are just disgraceful…” But seven out of 29 is 24% roughly double the percentage of the black population. What is going on here? The craziness of DEI is going on here. This is true not only at the professional level, but includes college teams as well.

Less Than 20% Of American Students Choose STEM Degrees | ZeroHedge

Posted by M. C. on March 20, 2023

What we need is a new faceless, blameless government agency that will fix everything, let’s call it the Department of Education.

Graduates in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – STEM for short – are sought after globally, but are often in short supply. Many countries have tried to bolster enrollment in STEM to aid important growth industries like medtech, digital services, mobility or computer sciences. However, countries have had varying success in the matter.

As Statista’s Katharina Buchholz reports, according to numbers collected by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, tertiary students in Malaysia and Tunisia are among the most likely to graduate in a STEM field, with between 43.5 and almost 40 percent of students there receiving a respective degree, out of all countries where recent data was available. India, with a still high share of 34 percent of students picking STEM, is however producing the most graduates in total in the field due to its population of around 1.4 billion people – the largest in the world.

Infographic: Where Students Choose STEM Degrees | Statista

You will find more infographics at Statista

UNESCO did not publish data for China. In 2016, the World Economic Forum said that China actually produced 4.7 million STEM graduates a year, which would actually exceed India’s number. Yet, according to the National Science Foundation, China classifies engineering and science fields quite broadly, leading to a lack of comparability in the data. The U.S. government agency counted 1.6 million Chinese science and engineering graduates in 2014, which would be fewer than Indian graduates.

Other countries with a strong showing of STEM graduates are the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Belarus and South Korea – all producing more than 30 percent STEM graduates. In general, countries that have managed to produce a higher share of STEM graduates than elsewhere are more likely to be found in the Arab world, in Eastern Europe and also in East Asia. After Tunisia, the share of STEM degree recipients is also upwards of 29% in Algeria, Mauretania and Morocco, all due to the prevalence of computer engineering in the region. The Arab Gulf – a place that has recently been pushing to innovate its economies – is producing an above-average number of STEM grads in some places, namely the UAE and Oman.

With the exception of Germany, Western Europe is not a STEM hotbed, however. Only 26 percent of UK graduates come from STEM courses, as do 25 percent in France and 23 percent in Spain. Even fewer graduate in the Americas, with shares of 19.6 percent and 17.5 percent in the U.S. and Brazil, respectively.

Sports DEI – LewRockwell

Why, of course, to ban ACT and SAT scores in academia.

Can we do any less in sports DEI? Of course not. We wouldn’t want to be considered racists. Accordingly, we propose that all analogs to these tests be prohibited. No scoring in any sport. No calculation of times or places in foot races or in the swimming pool.

What about prizes such as the Stanley Cup in hockey, the gold, silver and bronze medals in the Olympics, the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy in basketball and the Vince Lombardi Trophy in football (the Superbowl, too, should be considered in this regard; it too is an award, and therefore suspicious). Again, we resort to DEI in academia for our model. There, proportionality, diversity, are the benchmarks.  If we borrow a leaf from that practice, these sports awards should be given out not on the basis of ability, not based on points scored, or touchdowns, or distance thrown in the javelin, or time for foot races, but, rather, based on the proportion of a given demographic in the overall population. We wouldn’t want any racial community to have more than its fair share, now would we.

White Liberals Need Sensitivity Training – PaulCraigRoberts.org

Posted by M. C. on June 24, 2021

White liberals might think they are leading a revolution. If so, they will be its first victims. There is nothing in the doctrine of systemic racism and in critical race theory that excludes white liberals. In The Camp of the Saints the white liberals who paved the way for the black immigrant-invaders were the first to be killed.

https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2021/06/22/white-liberals-need-sensitivity-training/

Paul Craig Roberts

Who needs sensitivity training? The answer is white liberals and their black dupes. Not all blacks. Just the white liberals’ dupes.

White liberals and their black dupes are the most racist people on earth. They teach hatred of white people, teaching that leads to verbal and physical abuse. See, for example, these expressions of hatred for white people: https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2021/06/11/expressions-of-anti-white-hatred-in-high-places-aruna-khilanani-at-yale/

White Americans are not taught to hate black Americans. But black Americans are taught by white liberals to hate white Americans. Yet despite the taught, orchestrated hate, blacks are never guilty of hate speech or hate crime. But whites are guilty even if they are silent and actionless. It is called “systemic racism.” By virtue of skin color, white liberals have declared all whites to be racist. Clearly, it is the white liberals teaching racial hatred who require racial sensitivity training. Yet, it is their victims who receive it.

Skin color is now the arbiter of good and evil. Black is good. White is evil.

As whites overall are more successful than blacks overall despite the reverse discrimination that favors blacks, white liberals conclude that the American system is rigged for the triumph of evil over good. Meritocracy does the rigging. The white liberal solution is to get rid of merit-based school admissions, hiring, promotion, and job performance evaluation. Instead, these decisions must be based on skin color (and in some instances by gender declaration and sexual preference).

The consequence is the destruction of educational standards and of educational institutions themselves. For example, in Northern Virginia a famous STEM high school was branded racist because it had a 70% Asian and 30% white student body. (Because of their success relative to blacks, Asians also get the racist treatment.) The remedy was “equity,” which means admission by skin color. Those who effected the change admit that the school now accepts students who are not qualified to be there. For them to graduate, standards are reduced. In other words, an elite school has been destroyed. Having been “reformed,” it now produces the same morons as the rest of US schools.

The emphasis on “equity” instead of merit is now widely spread in US educational systems. In California public schools, mathematics has been deemphasized. White liberals decided that math is racist, because it is harder for blacks to do. The deemphasis on math is described by white liberals as reducing “whiteness” in education. Reconstructing history, taking down monuments, banning books, and substituting indoctrination for learning are other ways “whiteness” is being removed.

What does this mean for white students? They are not only denied education and the ability to reason, they are denied self-respect and any knowledge of positive contributions by their white forebears to their country. They can be neither proud of themselves nor proud of their country.

How then can they fight for their country? What becomes of the military? Indeed, how do you have a police force? https://www.rt.com/usa/526905-portland-officers-resign-charges/

The same is happening in the criminal justice system as in education. Just as it is racist for blacks to fail in school, it is racist for them to fail in society. The criminal justice system is just another racist way whites hold down blacks. In order to get rid of the injustice, black crimes are being defined away. For example, Oxfam, a British charity organization, trains its staff that it is racism for white women to report rape by black men. To discourage Scandinavian women from reporting rape by black men, there is an effort underway to equate such a report with a hate crime, which is punishable. In other words, if white women report that they have been raped, the raped woman, not the rapist, has committed a crime.

White liberals might think they are leading a revolution. If so, they will be its first victims. There is nothing in the doctrine of systemic racism and in critical race theory that excludes white liberals. In The Camp of the Saints the white liberals who paved the way for the black immigrant-invaders were the first to be killed.

White liberals are too stupid to understand that when a society is deconstructed, the result is violence and chaos.

Why There Are So Few Female Chess Grandmasters | Intellectual Takeout

Posted by M. C. on June 1, 2021

How many women currently hold the grandmaster title? Only 37 as of January 2021. That’s just 2 percent. There are several hypotheses bruited about to account for this gargantuan disproportion.

https://www.intellectualtakeout.org/why-there-are-so-few-female-chess-grandmasters/

By Walter Block

Only those of very hard hearts can fail to admire Beth, the heroine of Walter Tevis’s magnificent novel, and now a popular television series, The Queen’s Gambit. We love the idea of her, a girl who makes good, starting off from very modest beginnings. She overcomes alcohol and drug addictions and rises to the very top of her profession: chess.

But Beth’s story raises the question as to why there are so few female champion chess players.

At time of writing, there are 1,731 chess grandmasters, the acknowledged leaders in their field. In order to enter this honored company, a player needs to have attained a 2500 Elo rating from the International Chess Federation at any point in their career, and earned two favorable tournament results, referred to as norms. For some perspective, my own rating was around 1700 when I played in tournaments, which means I barely know which way the knight moves, so any grandmaster who couldn’t beat me with queen odds ought to be ashamed of himself.

How many women currently hold the grandmaster title? Only 37 as of January 2021. That’s just 2 percent. There are several hypotheses bruited about to account for this gargantuan disproportion.

1. Sexism

Sexism is the explanation offered by all too many reviewers of The Queen’s Gambit, yet there was only one instance of it in the book. Namely, when the then unrated Beth Harmon entered her first tournament. Relegated to the female section, her first two opponents were women. That is hardly a ringing endorsement for the sexism hypothesis.

Are there any “male only” chess tournaments? Not to my knowledge, at least not for the last three decades. There may be a few ignorant parents who tell their daughters that chess is unfeminine and that nice girls do not do that, but this hardly explains the phenomenon mentioned above. (Hint: For single women wishing to meet a guy, enter a chess tournament! The odds are fantastically in your favor!)

2. Less Participation

Considering my hint above, this is indeed correct, but this is at least as much an effect of this phenomenon as it is the cause. Females are perhaps just less interested in this nerdy game than males, many of whom are effectively addicted to it.

3. Differing Testosterone Levels

With testosterone comes competitiveness. Even including chess’s many draws, this Game of Kings is highly competitive. Although the players sit on their rears for hours on end, their heart beats are similar to those of marathon runners. They sweat bullets with no obvious physical exertion. Boxers do too, but theirs is not merely a mental exercise.

4. Geography and Spatial Awareness

Chess is a game of geography. Good players keep their eyes riveted on 64 spaces. It may well be that men are, to a far greater degree than women, hardwired topographically.

An obvious instance of this is that men generally have a better sense of direction than women. Why should this be? One hypothesis stems from sociobiology, or evolutionary psychology. When our species was living in trees or caves long ago, women stayed close to home base, picking berries, washing, cooking, and cleaning.

Men, by contrast, went a-hunting. This activity took them dozens, perhaps scores of miles away from their starting points. If they didn’t have a good sense of direction and a good feel for geography, they perished, leaving less genetic material to the next generation. The environment selected in favor of geographical expertise for men to a far greater degree than for women. As chess is a geographical game, males have a decided advantage.

5. Variance

The standard deviation of male abilities is far greater than that of females. Women are God’s, or nature’s, insurance policy. Men are His, or its, crap shoot.

We find very few women in mental institutions, prisons, or homeless shelters. These places are far more often inhabited by men. People of this ilk often lie two, three, or even four standard deviations below the mean. Similarly, we see very few women on the outer reaches of STEM, economics, and, yes, chess.

Former Harvard President Larry Summers was once forced to vacate his office by the wokesters of the day for musing on this subject, but that does not render this hypothesis false.

Make no mistake, chess, at top levels, takes a lot of brain power. You have to memorize hundreds of opening moves. Success does not come by seeing into the future of the game by a mere half dozen moves. Triple that, and you are closer to the miracles these brainiacs often perform. But there are very few women with abilities two, three, and four standard deviations above the mean.

Does this mean girls should not be taught chess and that women should not play this game? Of course not. That would be preposterous. Everyone should enjoy whatever pursuits ring their bells. But we should not be surprised at male dominance at the leading edge of this quintessentially intellectual sport.

Walter Block is an economics professor at Loyola University and a Mises Institute senior fellow. He is author or several books, including Defending the Undefendable (1976).

Erie Times E-Edition Article-Why universities need to reform STEM education

Posted by M. C. on December 7, 2020

The problem is not STEM.

It is graduating high school students that can’t read nor write, palming them off to the next level to worry about. It is using inordinate resources on “studies” majors that have no real world benefit other than to teach them to the next class. It is safe rooms and administration heavy college departments of kumbaya. It is the Fed program that sucks students into college loans for students that have no business in college when other options are more fitting.

I remember back in the 70’s college profs were complaining about having to spend time teaching content that should have been mastered in high school.

Remember “It is not what your country can do for you but what you can do…”? A libertarian might disagree with that statement but it does require one thing. Personal effort and responsibility. The stimulation for that comes from schools and parents, theoretically.

https://erietimes-pa-app.newsmemory.com/?publink=2389a983a

During a fractious election season, most Democrats and Republicans could agree on one issue: A bright future for America relies heavily on scientific and technical innovation — in health care, energy, infrastructure development, communication and food production.

But a bedrock assumption — that we will continue to have the skilled workforce to propel us forward — is in doubt.

The number of foreign students applying to American graduate programs in the STEM disciplines, where they currently fill about half the Ph.D. and post-doctoral slots and often join American companies or start their own after graduating, has declined significantly in recent years.

If foreign enrollment in these graduate programs continues to fall, where will we find the next generation of engineers and scientists the country will desperately need?

As the presidents of two very different institutions — one on the southwestern U.S. border with a majority-minority enrollment, the other near the northern border in a politically progressive but ethnically homogenous state — we believe we have an answer that could serve as common ground. We must nurture the millions of students in America from underrepresented groups who either don’t go to college, avoid the STEM disciplines if they do, or drop out of these majors if they choose them.

These talented young people, whom the National Science Foundation called the “missing millions” in a recent report, deserve the fulfilling careers and financial security STEM jobs offer. Moreover, America needs them if we are to thrive in the 21st century.

The major obstacle keeping the missing millions from pursuing careers in STEM isn’t what you’d expect, according to NSF-funded research. Access to advanced mathematics and science curricula at the K-12 level, exacerbated by COVID-19, remains uneven. But when researchers controlled for access, they found that the larger issue is creating an environment of encouragement and care for these students once they arrive at our campuses.

To thrive, minorities and women in STEM need to feel like they belong. Too often, they don’t.

Several recent studies found that students from different racial and ethnic backgrounds entered college as STEM majors at about the same rate — about 20% of white, Black and Hispanic students.

But Black and Hispanic students left STEM majors at much higher rates than white students — 40% for Black students and 37% for Hispanic students versus 29% for white students.

Further, and more troubling, 20% of Hispanic and 26% of Black STEM majors left their institutions without earning a degree. Only 13% of white STEM majors dropped out.

The good news is that other NSF-funded projects show us what we need to do to reverse this brain drain: Make STEM courses more hands-on and focused on real world problems; bolster advising early to keep students on track; provide support for the often difficult transition to college from high school or community college for first-generation college students; and modernize the culture of STEM so it is more supportive and less needlessly competitive.

Often, these strategies take no additional resources. What they do require is concentrated effort and an across-the-board willingness to change how we do business, from teaching and advising to admissions and co-curricular activities.

Our two schools show how deep commitment and action can make a difference.

The University of Texas at El Paso serves a student body that is 94% minority, and half are the first in their families to go to college. With researchbased retention strategies like engaged learning, on-campus employment, undergraduate research opportunities and strengths-based advising, UTEP’s retention rate is above the average for more selective universities. As the country’s demographics continue to shift, UTEP’s strengths-based advising model is one other universities could follow.

The University of Vermont has seen diversity enrollment more than double in the last 15 years, to 13.4% in a state that is 94% white, in part through a long commitment to partnerships programs with high schools in major metropolitan areas.

And recently, we created InspirEd, which pairs high school students in Washington, D.C. with top college counselors around the country. This commitment to early engagement is also one other schools could adopt.

As foreign enrollment in STEM graduate programs threatens to further erode, we must more effectively recruit and retain our missing millions. By committing to systemic change at our institutions, we’ll give legions of deserving young people, so often overlooked in the past, the opportunity to have rewarding lives and careers. And we’ll give our country the chance to make its visionary future real. Heather Wilson is president of the University of Texas at El Paso. Suresh Garimella is president of the University of Vermont.

Progressives Declare War on Asians, Meritocracy and STEM – Asian Dawn

Posted by M. C. on November 24, 2020

One bitter first-generation Asian-American parent vindictively stated, “On a brighter note, I know China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore will completely destroy American companies when my children are my age because of these stupid policies. That gives me comfort. These idiotic Democrats will guarantee Asians will win—just not Asian-Americans….maybe we should go work for Asian-owned companies instead of giving our minds to Apple or Intel.”

November 18, 2020

Progressives all across America have declared war on Asians, meritocracy, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Recently, the San Francisco Unified School District voted to replace their merit admissions process at Lowell High School, one of the best high schools in America and also happens to be 61% Asian, with a lottery-based system.

When Asian-American parents opposed the school district’s plans to enact its new “lottery” system in late October, the school district blasted the parents by stating they were “racist” and responsible for the “toxic culture” at the school. Parents were accused of furthering the “Asian supremacy” agenda by making their children work so hard; their children’s achievements were demoralizing African-American and Latino students.

One African-American parent stated it’s because of Asians hogging up all the spaces “Black people can’t catch up technologically because the ‘stupid Asians’ are keeping black people down out of fear they’d be overtaken.”

When one angry Asian-American parent responded “Trust me, you’ll never catch up. If you need to lower-standards to get in, you’ll never beat us,” a near physical fight broke loose.

Another Asian parent screamed, “First you blame white people, now you blame us!? Grow up! Study harder or go home!”

On Halloween weekend, about 100 families, students, alumni, and community members from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology stood on the grassy lawn in front of the school and held a symbolic memorial service for America’s No. 1 high school, according to Crushing the Myth.

“Remember the glory of TJ (Thomas Jefferson),” said Yuyan Zhou, a Chinese-American alumni mother, as her friends stood around her with awards and trophies that symbolized the school’s shining achievements.

Thomas Jefferson High School will no longer be the No. 1 school in America after abolishing their merit-based admissions to make way for more less-qualified and less-deserving African-American and Latino students who could not pass TJ’s entrance exam.

The Chinese American Parents Association of Fairfax County sent a three-page letter to the Fairfax County Board of Education, opposing the lack of “respect” that Asian-Americans have been facing in the debate over TJ admissions, according to Crushing the Myth.

Thomas Jefferson spent over 35 years building its reputation as a premier high school. But it only took 12 Democratic members of the Fairfax County School Board only 12 minutes and 11 seconds on Tuesday night, October 6, during an online meeting to kill the school, eliminating its race-blind, merit-based admissions test.See also

Around the same time parents at TJ found out race-blind tests were eliminated, members of the Boston Public School system in Massachusetts announced they were going to eliminate academic exams to the school district’s top three schools, including O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science. https://www.youtube.com/embed/eFHO_S3ITVM?feature=oembed

Boston school officials argued that STEM school’s racial demographics are “too white and too Asian and they’re both meeting or exceeding expectations at higher rates” than Black and Hispanic students and that’s not fair. The Boston Public School system calls their new plan “racial equity planning tool.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City is also planning to eliminate race-blind admissions for Stuyvesant High School and the Bronx High School of Science, citing “white supremacy” as the main factor for his quest—never mind the fact those high schools are more than 60 percent Asian.

The Collapsing Universities—and What We Can Do About It – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on September 4, 2020

The tool used by government was the college accrediting agency. . .After the Second World War, the federal government used various college accrediting agencies to ostensibly guarantee a quality education for veterans. Only accredited schools could receive G.I. Bill funds, so the accrediting agencies quickly transformed themselves.

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2020/09/lew-rockwell/the-collapsing-universities-and-what-we-can-do-about-it/

By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

America’s universities have been taken over by the left, but the way they are reacting to the fake Covid-19 crisis gives us a chance to reconstitute higher education on sound free-market principles.

In the name of “diversity,” academic standards have been gutted. Here are some examples. Emily Walton, a sociology professor at Dartmouth, teaches her students about “ ‘white blindness’ Everyone learns, but I find that the small handful of white students in the class usually learn the most. That’s because for the first time in their lives, they begin to look at themselves as members of a racial group. They understand that being a good person does not make them innocent but rather they, too, are implicated in a system of racial dominance.

After spending their young lives in a condition of ‘white blindness,’ that is, the inability to see their own racial privilege, they begin to awaken to the notion that racism has systematically kept others down while benefiting them and other white people.”

As Karen Kwiatkowski sums up the situation: “Imprisonment of speech and expression – we’ve observed and lived this for decades as political correctness, maturing into blanking, canceling, me-tooing and doxxing the other.  Strait-jacketing critical thought and destruction of the tools of debate, complete.  Instead of looking forward we look at the fearful horde beside us and wonder what it is thinking and what direction it will take in order to inform our decisions – which will be to conform with it, lest we become oblivion.”

The brilliant young engineering student Atilla Mert Sulker points out that the diversity poison has spread to the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). “The effort to ‘close the gender gap’ in STEM represents a preference for minority status over merit that deems a student’s performance less important than her female-ness. Yet it only hurts individuals to put them in a field in which they will be unhappy or perform poorly, regardless of gender. If an individual, no matter how gifted, is averse to the risk of possibly burning out and forgoing a good grade, then maybe STEM isn’t the right field.

STEM curricula are deliberately rigorous, as their subjects are not easy, and bridges tend to collapse when things go wrong. This is why there are weed-out classes to discourage students from pursuing them lightly.”

As if this wasn’t bad enough, many universities are imposing draconian restrictions on students to cope with Covid-19. Jordan Schachtel has written an important article about this. At Baylor University, “The university has announced that there will be weekly mandatory tests … If any student refuses to take the COVID-19 test, they are subject to suspension or expulsion. Students are not making friends with their classmates … No one can recognize who’s who with a mask on, so there has been a significant increase of phone usage on campus and a significant decrease of socialization. Students show up for their in-person class, sit there, and head back to their apartment as soon as they are finished with classes. Everyone expects to move online before the semester is over. We all suspect that the university is postponing the move so that they can get the full tuition without much grounds for a lawsuit.”

At the University of Iowa, “They have ‘isolation dorms’ for COVID kids, but they are horrid. Guys in hazmat suits come … 2 week isolation, no visitors. Nurse on call but up to 3 hour wait if you need something … kids at school now are not getting tested so they don’t get sentenced to the isolation prisons.”

At St. Lawrence University, “1 positive case out of 2k tests. Kids limited to ‘family groups’ and no more than four in dorm room. Masks when outside dorm and wrist band indicates you can go outdoors. Very limited social interaction.”

At Creighton University, “11 days to get the required COVID test back. Isolated the whole time. No in person eating at the dorms as a norm. Training in the heat with masks for hours. Masks 24/7 on campus inside and out. Social isolation. 2 classes a week in person, everything else virtual. Can’t come home until end of fall semester as you can’t travel more than 100 miles from Omaha. Aren’t allowed to go anywhere or do anything except local restaurant pick ups and run to the store. If you are mildly exposed to a person with COVID, 14 day mandatory quarantine.”

The universities will tell you that they need to impose these restrictions to cope with a raging pandemic, but they are lying. University students have almost no risk of dying from Covid-19. Bill Sardi says, “In the first 8 months of 2020 there were only ~1200 excess deaths per month or 40 extra deaths per day exclusively due to COVID-19 coronavirus infections, with 80% of those among American age 65 and older.  By extrapolation, there were only ~8 excess COVID-19 only deaths per day among working-age adults and school-age children.”

In order to understand what is happening to universities, we need to bear in mind something essential. The crisis did not begin with the diversity movement. After World War II, the government began a long-term effort to take over higher education. As Tom DiLorenzo has pointed out, “The damage caused by the program was much more than fiscal. It made the centralization of education possible for the first time in American history. That in turn opened the door to the ruinous politicization of higher education that has marked the past half century.

The tool used by government was the college accrediting agency. . .After the Second World War, the federal government used various college accrediting agencies to ostensibly guarantee a quality education for veterans. Only accredited schools could receive G.I. Bill funds, so the accrediting agencies quickly transformed themselves. They became the gatekeepers of the tax money and virtual adjuncts of federal power. This gatekeeper role expanded as federal funding of higher education escalated. . . This new world arrived almost immediately, as virtually every college and university in the country clamored for money and students, and willingly threw out traditional standards. This infusion of tax dollars created, notes Robert Nisbet, ‘the single most powerful agent of change that we can find in the university’s long history.’ Had anyone objected at the time, he would have been put down as selfish and undemocratic.

Today, accreditation agencies, private in name only, have tremendous power over colleges and universities, and they are slavish to government’s agenda. Today, these agencies are the major source of political correctness and big-government ideology on college campuses.”

What can we do about this disaster? Karen Kwiatkowski is right. With the Covid-19 restrictions, universities have gone too far. Students are fed up, and law suits for failing to fulfill contractual obligations may ruin many universities. She says. “One of the worst things that can happen to a state is to appear ridiculous.

Especially in the eyes of the young, who have had their expectations disappointed, their plans disrupted by mandate, their elders shown to be idiotic and frightened, their government greedy, avaricious, sadistic.

The state itself has assisted the liberty movement, with its lumbering broad-brush sadism.  It far prefers physical destruction, marches and riots, police brutality and the outright rage of its citizens to the cuts of a thousand poems – and 40 million awakening children who suddenly become aware that the King is buck naked, ugly, angry, vile, and simultaneously weak and wasted.”

There is an additional reason we should view today’s universities with skepticism, even if the leftists get tired of Covid-19 and move on to some other craze. Tuition costs are enormous, and most students have to assume crippling loan burdens to get by. “Today, roughly 70% of American students end up taking out loans to go to college. The average graduate leaves school with around $30,000 in debt and all told, some 45 million Americans owe $1.6 trillion in student loans — and counting.” Most of these loans can’t be discharged through bankruptcy, and students may have to work decades to pay them off. What makes this even worse is that most of the tuition money goes into building lavish and unneeded buildings, perks for administrators, and “diversity” programs that undermine our culture. “Die-versity” is a better name for these programs.

The university was one of the foremost institutions of the High Middle Ages, and it is sad that the contemporary American university has sunk so low from the heights of medieval Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, and Salamanca. But we must face facts. What then can students and their parents who are fed up do? Private education and homeschooling are blossoming, creating a wide variety of choices for families and students.

I confess that one such alternative institution is foremost in my mind. A long-held vision of both Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard is now a reality. Their vision? A graduate school of Austrian economics.

Throughout its nearly forty-year history, the Mises Institute has been focused on providing support to students of other educational institutions. Helping students discover the economics of freedom and inspiring them to go on to teach at the university level is and has been a priority for the Institute. Excellent service that is personal, responsive, and geared towards assisting students in reaching their individual educational and career goals has been emblematic of all Mises Institute programs.

At the Mises Institute, we aim to continue the tradition of education so eloquently expressed by Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard were among the highest exemplars of the values of Western civilization, and this is what we endeavor to transmit to our students.

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2020/04/walter-e-block/inclusivity-diversity-and-the-coronavirus/

By Walter E. Block

In the United States, and all around the world, there are scientists in laboratories, busily working on finding a medicine to cure those afflicted with the coronavirus, and/or a vaccine, to prevent others from contracting this dread disease.

All well and good you say? Not so fast. There is a problem here, a big one. Our precious tenets of inclusivity and diversity are not being adhered to. Virtually all of the chemists, biologists, STEM PhDs and others of that ilk are straight white males! This is intolerable. This must not be allowed to continue! Are we fair weather supporters of inclusivity and diversity, or do we seriously uphold these crucially important principles? If the latter, we must do all that we can to dismiss, not all, we’re reasonable here, but many of the evil straight white males from these laboratories. We must replace them with lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals, blacks, gays, bisexuals, the transgendered, the intersex, queer/questioning, asexual, the non-binary, the pansexual, Hispanics, women, Eskimos, Native Americans, the disabled and other denigrated and deprived groups.

What’s this you say? That members of these other groups are less qualified than the cis-gendered white males presently occupying these positions? Yes, true, but that is only because of rampant discrimination on the part of the aforesaid evil white males. Had admission to these STEM Ph.D. programs been fair in the first place (that is, based on inclusivity and diversity), we would have had laboratories filled with people who look just like the rest of us.

What, you have another objection to my modest proposal? (People who question or disagree with me are Fascists, and you’re beginning to sound like one. However, we live in unusual times, and I’m willing to consider yet another objection of yours). You claim that we are less likely to find a cure or a vaccine for Covid 19 if we ferret out white males, not all of them to be sure, just many of them, and replace them with salt of the earth folk (that is, everyone except a straight white cis gendered male)? Nonsense. Nonsense on stilts! You only make this objection because you have been taken in by the propaganda of the evil straight white cis gendered males. You want some proof? Black people have in the past accounted for numerous and important scientific discoveries, as have women. Go look it up if you doubt me. Or, see below for evidence that will make your head spin.

But let us consider your point arguendo. It is totally wrong, as the evidence I just adduced amply demonstrates, but let us consider the contrary to fact conditional: to the extent we kick out of the nation’s laboratories many of the evil straight white cis gendered males, and replace them with members of downtrodden groups, we will reduce the probability of finding cures and vaccines for the coronavirus. (This mere contention of yours makes me so angry I could scream. It emanates, only, from the fascist side of the political economic spectrum. Nevertheless, I will condescend to respond to it, even though what you so richly deserve for raising this point is a punch in the nose, and banishment from any university, whether as a professor or a guest speaker; and if you dare show up in one of these venues, a punch in the nose is what you’ll get. We’ve treated Charles Murray in a similar manner, and we’ll do the same to you).

The answer to this objection is So What! There are more important things than saving lives; promotion of inclusivity and diversity is one of them. Whenever we promote inclusivity and diversity we do it at the cost of something else (remember, I am still in the arguendo mode; I do not for a moment believe that dismissing evil straight white cis gendered males from the scientific workshops of the nation will have any negative effects on discoveries). This occurs in every field it is applied to: medicine, philosophy, economics, physics, mathematics, whatever.

Another point, now that you are finished with your fascistic whining: disproportionately more blacks than whites are succumbing to Covid 19. Why is this? I know why it is: it is due to the fact that a disproportionate number of evil straight white cis gendered males are now in charge of science departments and laboratories. Don’t ask me how they do it. But we have here a clear case of disparate impact. We can deduce from statistics of this sort, alone, discriminatory practices.

I hope by now I have convinced everyone of my thesis: out with many of the evil straight white cis gendered males, and in with members of groups that have long been victimized by them. I feel so strongly that I am now announcing a pledge: we will not avail ourselves of any medicine or vaccine guaranteed cure or prevent this virus until and unless our non-negotiable demands are met.

I’ll soon be circulating a petition to this effect on these pages. If you have even a modicum of social justice in your hearts, you’ll be ready to sign up. I’m going to ask my high school buddy Bernie to co chair this effort. Surely, he’ll agree to do so.

Wait, I forgot all about evil straight white cis gendered Jewish males. Surely, Jews are disproportionately responsible for this present evil, too.

Here are some interesting facts to ponder:

* In 2017 not a single black person earned a Ph.D. in “a dozen academic fields—largely STEM related”

* “… the proportion of black men at the Ph.D. level more than doubled between 1992 and 2012, but from a very low base of only 1 percent to 2 percent of all STEM degrees…”

* Women earn about 40% of all STEM Ph.D.s while men account for roughly 60%

St. Olaf College in Minnesota has the right idea. They are holding ceremonies for all graduating seniors except for white males. This policy should be applied far more widely.

Pegs:

Male female differences in STEM phds.

No black stem related phds in 2017.

Black STEM phds doubled.

On disproportionate deaths of black people from the virus.

Female scientific discoveries.

Black scientific discoveries.

Jewish scientific discoveries.

I tried to look up white male scientific discoveries, as I did these others, and got this, instead.

Diversity and Inclusion Insanity – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on January 22, 2020

Their solution to increase the number of women’s involvement in STEM is to standardize grading curves, in order to grade less “harshly.” The insanity of this approach is to not only weaken standards for women but to weaken standards across the board. This is more evidence that George Orwell was absolutely right when he said, “There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.”

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2020/01/walter-e-williams/diversity-and-inclusion-insanity/

By Walter E. Williams

It’s nearly impossible to have even a short conversation with a college administrator, politician or chief executive without the words diversity and inclusion dropping from their lips. Diversity and inclusion appear to be the end-all and be-all of their existence. So, I thought I’d begin this discussion by first looking up the definition of diversity.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, diversity is “the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.” The definition gratuitously adds, “equality and diversity should be supported for their own sake.” The standard definition given for inclusion is involvement and empowerment where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized.

Here’s my question to those who are wedded to diversity and inclusion: Are people better off the less they have in common with one another? For example, women are less likely to be able to march 12.4 miles in five hours with an 83-pound assault load. They are also less likely to be able to crawl, sprint, negotiate obstacles and move a wounded comrade weighing 165 pounds while carrying that load. Would anyone argue that a military outfit would benefit from diversity by including soldiers who can and those who cannot march 12 miles in five hours while carrying an 83-pound load?

You say, “Williams, the military is an exception!” What about language? The International Civil Aviation Organization has decreed that all air traffic controllers and flight crew members engaged in or in contact with international flights must be proficient in the English language as a general spoken medium. According to UNESCO, there are about 7,000 languages in the world. The International Civil Aviation Organization could promote language inclusiveness by requiring language rotation. Some years, Cebuano (of the Malayo-Polynesian language family) and in other years Kinyarwanda (of the Niger-Congo language family) could be the language of pilots and air traffic controllers. Keep in mind that it is claimed that the great benefit of diversity and inclusiveness is that it promotes and fosters a sense of belonging. It values and practices respect for the differences in the talents, beliefs, backgrounds and ways of living of its members.

Another issue is what should be done when people who should know better praise nondiversity and noninclusiveness? Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse L. Jackson said, “I applaud commissioner Adam Silver’s commitment to diversity and inclusion within the NBA.” During the 2018-2019 season, more than 33% of NBA teams had head coaches of color. The number of assistant head coaches of color was over 42%. The number of black NBA players was 82%. In the face of these statistics, Oris Stuart, the NBA’s chief diversity and inclusion officer said, “Diversity, inclusion and equality are central to every aspect of our game and our business.” I would like for Jesse Jackson and others who claim that there’s racial diversity and inclusiveness in professional basketball to make their case. The same question can be asked about professional football where 70% of NFL players are black, and 9% of team head coaches are black. The thornier question and challenge is what can be done to make professional basketball and football look more like the American population?

Most of the diversity and inclusiveness insanity has its roots in academia. An example is a paper titled “Equilibrium Grade Inflation with Implications for Female Interest in STEM Majors,” written by Naval Postgraduate School professor Thomas Ahn, Duke University economics professor Peter Arcidiacono, Duke University researcher Amy Hopson, and James R. Thomas of the Federal Trade Commission. The authors argue that science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs at colleges and universities lacking female enrollment can be attributed largely to harsh grading policies in these fields.
