Notes on the Vote

Posted by M. C. on November 6, 2024

“For years I’ve watched the networks slant their reporting to straight-up propaganda, and now it has grown to sheer deceit.”

Taki

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the main American media includes many homely, bitter, left-leaning women and numerous bald, left-wing, and equally unattractive men. No wonder, then, that Kamala is the media’s favorite and Trump is referred to as Hitler and, in the words of a Quasimodo type, one Adam Gopnik, “a vile and malignant actor.”

Another universally acknowledged truth is that the main media in America, in lockstep with the entertainment industry, does not object to its left-wing agenda. Network executives, newspaper editors, publishers—whose core job is deciding which stories get told and which do not—have decided that everything Trump does or says is vile, and everything Kamala says or does is not. In fact, the media has dedicated itself to destroying Trump, with Anne Applebaum (an old friend) calling the Donald “Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini.” Better yet, CBS trimmed and favorably edited Kamala’s answers on 60 Minutes, making her sound and look like a female Demosthenes rather than the inarticulate blowhard that she is in reality. The New York Times, needless to say, has its new Hitler to attack daily, and manages to sling mud at “bombastic billionaires” even in stories that have nothing to do with politics or the Donald. A recent book, a real hatchet job by two drippy Times gasbags about the Donald, was joyously reviewed—surprise, surprise—and an unwatchable movie, ditto.

“For years I’ve watched the networks slant their reporting to straight-up propaganda, and now it has grown to sheer deceit.”

I am writing this column five days before the election, an election that I cannot see Trump winning as long as the media, Hollywood, Big Tech, and even parts of Wall Street are stacked up against him. For years I’ve watched the networks slant their reporting to straight-up propaganda, and now it has grown to sheer deceit. This corrupt media/Democratic Party alliance is a scandal, but no one seems to be doing anything about it. Talk about a biased system. And never have I seen this country more split, with Kamala’s diphthongs that resemble those of a customer complaint robot making headway into Donald’s camp via intelligently placed ads: Pro football is now the American pastime, having replaced baseball, and Kamala’s ads before each quarter reach tens of millions of possible Trump voters announcing the end of any welfare insurances and social security in case of his victory. It’s all lies, of course, but our so-called independent media are not about to denounce it.

The media has clearly chosen to become a propaganda arm of the Democratic Party, spreading disinformation and conspiracy theories galore. Just for starters, there are more than 10 million men, women, and children who have illegally made it to these shores since the Biden-Harris duo came into power in 2021, yet Kamala, a border tsar with a broken border, is not held to account, and no Times or Washington Post or network phony has made a fuss about her biggest lies of all. These are people who call themselves journalists but are nothing but activist hypocrites, and I apologize to activists and hypocrites who are not posing as journalists.

There are thousands of migrants from Mauritania flooding into a small Ohio town, with the federal government doing zilch about it, and thousands of illegal Haitians turning an Indiana town into a hellhole, yet it’s Trump the fascist who’s occupying our Fourth Estate at the moment. Almost one million illegal migrants have been given quiet amnesty under Biden-Kamala and can remain in the country without the possibility of deportation. Add to those 10 million illegal migrants in our country since the duo of Joe and Kamala came to power, and you’ll be excused if you reach for your gun.

So, what will happen five days from now? America will go to the polls, and the major networks will do their damnedest to claim irregularities and cheating if the Donald lucks out, and dismiss any irregularities if Kamala wins the top prize. I don’t know why, but this election reminds me so much of the run-up to the Iraq war twenty years ago. William Buckley, who was responsible for my start as a journalist and a very close friend, was pro-war and disappointed in me for not only being against the war in my various columns but also starting a magazine in order to protest it. Yet later on, when I visited Bill in Connecticut, he told me in no uncertain terms that he had been taken in by the neocons and their lies. He was neither the first nor the last to be taken in by what in reality are unpaid Israeli agents.

You Can’t Vote Your Way Out Of A Mess You Never Voted Yourself Into

Posted by M. C. on May 30, 2023

US presidential elections are a performance designed to trick Americans into thinking they have any meaningful control over the major decisions that will be made by their government. They’re the unplugged video game controller you give your baby brother so you can stop him from whining to play without actually letting him.

Only those trusted by the empire will be allowed to cross the velvet rope by the imperial bouncers — and yes I’m sorry Trumpers but this includes your guy; he’d never have made it through if he wasn’t trusted, and indeed he spent his entire term advancing longstanding empire agendas.

https://substack.com/inbox/post/124505184

Well it’s that time again. Time for everyone to spend a year and a half pouring mountains of mental energy into arguing about who should be the next President of the United States of America.

Friendships will be shattered. Family dinners will be ruined. Social media activists will lose themselves in weeks-long flame wars. And, when all is said and done, the person sworn into office on January 2024 will oversee an administration which governs in more or less the same way as their predecessors.

As Tom Woods put it, no matter who you vote for, you get John McCain.

I’m writing this article now because I’m already getting a bunch of questions about this election and who I think is best and worst and why, and I know I’m going to get a whole lot more. Many Americans get so swept up in this thing it often looks odd to them seeing someone talking about their government without talking about the presidential race when it’s in season.

So to be perfectly clear I will not be supporting or cheerleading any candidate in this election. Not because I don’t think Australians have a right to involve themselves in US politics (we absolutely do), but because US presidential elections are a performance designed to trick Americans into thinking they have any meaningful control over the major decisions that will be made by their government. They’re the unplugged video game controller you give your baby brother so you can stop him from whining to play without actually letting him.

I am not saying not to vote. By all means vote if you want to; it gets you out of the house, gives you something to talk about, plus you get to have a sausage (I’m assuming Americans also get sausages at their voting sites).

And vote for whomever you please. Vote for Biden. Vote for Ronald DeSantrump. Write in Warwick Davis, star of the 1988 cult classic fantasy film Willow. Write in a pod of laundry detergent. It will make the exact same amount of difference to the large-scale operations of the US government.

So on election day, please do as you wish. How often to you get to make a decision that’s completely free of any consequences of any kind? Whoever you vote for or don’t vote for, you can sleep free and easy knowing that it made no difference to anything at all. Like eating a single cucumber slice with no dressing.

If You Vote, You Have No Right to Complain

Posted by M. C. on April 10, 2022

Yes, democracy is the delusion that everyone can live at the expense of everyone else, but the larger problem for those genuinely supporting democracy is to hold two contradictory principles at once: your own view of what’s good policy and what is the best candidate, and your superseding belief that democratic voting makes for the best governance.

Joakim Book

“Most citizens are not doing us any favor by voting. Asking everyone to vote is like asking everyone to litter.”
—Jason Brennan, Against Democracy

No, the title is not a typo: I mean the opposite of the quip many people use after elections: “If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain.”

The romantic view of democratic government is the idea that we all come together, display our values and give our say, and through the miracles of aggregation we receive a responsible government that somehow reflects those values. And for the next four years, we can happily spend our time on what really matters in life, while our appointed representatives carefully and competently steward our shared public goods in the best interest of our nation.

If you didn’t sneer while reading the previous paragraph, you have either never participated in a democracy or you are in for a brutal shock once you lift your nose from that fairytale-like view. One most astute critic of democracy, Jason Brennan, opens his book Against Democracy by summarizing how his view differs from most others:

Many of my colleagues entertain a somewhat romantic view of politics: politics brings us together, educates and civilizes us, and makes us civic friends. I see politics as doing the opposite: it pulls us apart, stultifies and corrupts us, and makes us civic enemies.

The big promise of democracy and universal suffrage is that you—yes, you!—can make things better if you just get your buttocks off the couch, inform yourself, and go vote. In every election cycle we are told that it’s sooo important to “get out the vote”—which is weird, because in many states in America’s electoral system it’s completely pointless to vote and because why in the world would a candidate say “Go vote!” unless they meant “Go vote … for me”?

The overlooked flipside of democracy’s promise is that you—yes, you—might make things worse. For what do you know about tax rates or environmental legislation or how to structure healthcare or infrastructure needs or what ought to be taught in public schools? How could you possibly have any reasonable grasp of military procurement or how much the federal government ought to spend on x? (Well, the last one does have a reasonable answer: zero.)

I always find it peculiar that those in love with democracy are always so excited and serious in the months leading up to an important election—and always so disappointed afterward. Their candidate didn’t win, and now they must reconcile that consequence with their own (clearly mistaken) worldview. The people didn’t want what we were selling—how odd.

Three common reactions are

  • The opposition stole the election (“It was Russia’s fault!”). While the Russia story in America or Britain in 2016 never made much sense, it was a convenient scapegoat for those who couldn’t rectify their devotion for democracy with the terrifying outcomes it had just delivered. For well-educated, coastal elites it was much easier in 2020–21 to ridicule the evil Trumpers for pursuing this avenue in the January 6 attacks, even though the shoe had been on the other foot in 2016 ( … and 2000). Democracy is about hurling crap at your opponent, while conveniently forgetting that you yourself are full of it.
  • We need more education and to “get the message out.” Clearly, our campaign slogans weren’t good enough or our candidate(s) didn’t resonate with the electorate or there is some ignorance or misunderstanding among the voting public. Because they, like all good and honest people, share our conviction of what’s important. It couldn’t possibly be that many others disagree with our assessment of the world, the values we espouse, or the “obvious” policies we say we wish to pursue?
  • I hate my fellow countrymen! How could they be so stupid? Don’t they understand that Trump/Hillary/Corbyn/Johnson/Macron/Le Pen is so clearly incompetent and dangerous and dumb and that a Good Society™ requires my candidate to progress?

What’s so interesting about all these reactions is that they betray the foundational premise of democracy—the aggregation of the public’s will into one whole.

How to Fight the Woke…and Win – American Thinker

Posted by M. C. on June 19, 2020

https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2020/06/how_to_fight_the_wokeand_win.html

By Damian Max

The Woke are everywhere.  They’re in our schools, in government, and at our places of work.  More importantly, the Woke are on the move.  They are coming for you, for me, and for anyone else who does not subscribe to their quasi-religion.  Don’t fool yourself — you are not safe.  The Woke are at war with anyone who opposes them, and it does not matter if you just want to be left alone.  You will have to bend the knee or fight.

Here are a dozen strategies that you can start using right now

1. Adopt the right mindset and take action.  As mentioned, we are in a cultural and political war, whether we want to be or not.  So adopt an appropriate mindset.  Get mentally tough.  Get ready for battle.  Remember that the Woke are not your friends.  They despise you.  Realize that they will lie about you, not play fair, and try to crush you into submission.  Accept that family and friends may turn on you once you show your opposition to the Woke agenda.  And understand that some of your own “leaders” and “allies” will happily betray you to virtue-signal to the Woke.  So watch your back and take action yourself, for it is action that matters, not words.

2. Become anti-fragile.  In war, you must always secure your supply lines.  One of the Woke’s most powerful weapons is economic pressure, so take that away from them as much as possible.  Grow some of your own food, start a side business, or form a self-supporting tribe (like a church group that financially supports itself in case one member gets fired by the Woke).  Being anti-fragile will allow you to stand firm when you need to speak the truth, which brings us to Point 3.

3. Speak the truth.  In our age of Woke emotionalism, truth-telling is the truly revolutionary act.  So speak the truth, and do so boldly.  This does not mean doing so in every situation, but if pressed, you cannot let the Woke steamroll you into silent submission.  Moreover, wear that MAGA hat.  Be proud.  Display your beliefs through symbols.  The fact is that boldness and visible symbolism build morale, and they will likely inspire others to speak up as well.

4. Never apologize, and never quit.  The Woke view an apology as a confession, not as a chance at reconciliation.  As such, never apologize.  You will only be made to grovel further or surrender completely.  At the same time, never quit.  That is what your spineless employer will want you to do to save him the trouble of firing you.  Don’t do it.  Make them fire you, then move to Point 5.

5. Use lawfare.  If you have the means, then use lawfare against the Woke at any and every opportunity (which is one reason why electing President Trump and getting good judges is important).  For instance, if your employer fires you to appease the Woke mob, then make him pay for it.  Don’t go quietly.  Instead, hit him with the hardest legal counterpunch that you can.  It won’t always work, but it will sometimes, and that matters.

6. Arm yourself.  Exercise your God-given rights and arm yourself thoroughly.  After all, a sheep is much easier to cage than a lion.

7. Starve the Woke while feeding your allies.  Stop giving money or time to any Woke-supporting group.  Stop supporting Woke universities or businesses.  Stop watching Netflix and the NFL.  Just stop.  Starve them to the greatest extent possible.  And push to defund any such groups that receive public funds.  Just as importantly, support any ally that has started his own platform or business to compete with such organizations.  Donate to them.  Spread the word about them.  Write good reviews about them.  Such support is easy to do and pays dividends.

8. Vote in everything.  Vote in school council elections, city elections, etc.  Vote in everything.  Granted, voting will not defeat the Woke, but it will provide our side with some temporary victories, and it will buy time for the ultimate solution to this problem (see Point 12).

9. Use your power.  Get into any position of political, business, and/or cultural power, then keep your sphere of influence anti-Woke.  And yes, this means mercilessly purging any Wokester from the domain that you control.  Remember, we are at war, and they would do the same to you in a heartbeat.  In fact, they already have.  And since they made the new rules, it’s only fair that we abide by them.

10. Use the Woke’s tactics against them.  We may not wish to, but it is time to use the Woke’s tactics against them.  Establish gun sanctuary zones.  Disinvite Woke speakers.  Tear down statues of Woke heroes who were flawed in some way.  If the Woke want “cancel culture,” then it is time to cancel the Woke wherever and whenever we can.

11. Have children, and don’t send them to Woke schools.  Children are the future, and if the culture war against the Woke turns out to be a 700-year Reconquista rather than a short skirmish, then having children is vital.  So have many kids, but do not let them be indoctrinated in Woke schools.  (If you are young, and don’t want the Woke to have leverage against you, then hold off on children.  However, when you get anti-fragile, have many.)

12. Support secession.  Let’s be honest, the time has come for some areas in the U.S. to be allowed to go and build their desired Woketopia.  We should let them go — not just figuratively, but literally.  After all, the United States are indeed states, but they are not united.   And secession is the only peaceful and moral long-term solution to the division in America.  The other alternatives are continuing political and cultural war — with serious violence being a real possibility — or total political and cultural submission for one side or the other.  But the former option is worse than secession, and the latter one is immoral.  Moreover, it is just wrong that every four years, nearly half the country is shaking in fear at the prospect that the other side might win the election.  Not to mention that such fear is a sign — a big, bright neon sign — that two groups of people so culturally and morally different should no longer be together.  Thus, to defeat the Woke peacefully but permanently, secession is the only real answer.  And if America is truly an idea, then it is an idea that can be recreated anywhere, even in a newly formed country.

These twelve strategies are a roadmap for success against the Woke.  If we use them, we will certainly face hardships.  We will suffer.  But in the end, we will win.

No Matter How You Vote, The New Congress Won’t Represent You | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on November 6, 2018

For centuries, this myth of representation has served to quash opposition to government abuse, and to bolster claims that submission to government is “voluntary.” It’s time to abandon the myths.

https://mises.org/wire/no-matter-how-you-vote-new-congress-wont-represent-you

…Two Ways Representation Doesn’t Work

Specifically, there are two ways that real-world political representation doesn’t fit the popular notions of how it all works.

First of all, even if a politician wanted to faithfully represent the people within his constituency, this would be impossible. It is impossible because the politicians can’t know the views of the whole population within his constituency. And it’s impossible because the more diverse a constituency becomes, the more unlikely it is that any legislation can be crafted to serve the interests of everyone.

Secondly, we must not fall into the trap of assuming that political representatives even try to respond to the policy desires of the district voters. The idea that government coercion is made legitimate through political representation leans heavily on the idea that politicians adhere to a delegate model of political representation in which they try to advance or protect the interests of their constituents. Unfortunately, this is a bad assumption.

The Impossibility of Representing “the People”
