Lessons from the Phantom Airship Panic — of 1913 – Responsible Statecraft

Posted by M. C. on February 19, 2023

One newspaper editor even wrote that “without being thoroughly scared, the great British public will not bring pressure to bear on the Treasury” to expand airplane and airship manufacturing.

In February of 1913, the editors of the Standard issued a stark warning to their readers: Great Britain was being besieged by mysterious flying objects, and it was well past time to do something.

“There is not the smallest doubt but that this country at the present moment is the object of a systematic aerial reconnaissance carried out at night,” they wrote. The culprit? “There is only one answer to that question […] Germany alone possesses aircraft capable of doing what is being done by the airships that have been seen over England.”

The journalists, like many of their compatriots, were caught up in the Phantom Airship Panic of 1913. Over the course of several months, thousands of Britons claimed to have seen Zeppelins flying overhead, stoking fears that Germany was surveilling the British Isles — and perhaps even threatening to strike them from above.

The episode may sound familiar. Today, the United States is in the throes of its own panic, which started when an apparent Chinese spy balloon flew over the country earlier this month. Politicians and journalists quickly seized on the story, with some speculating that the balloon could be far more than a surveillance threat. “How do we know the next balloon isn’t loaded up with bioweapons?” asked Jesse Waters of Fox News.

The Balloon Panic of 2023 continues to drag on, with reports of new flying objects being spotted — and shot down — for three consecutive days last week.  In hopes of finding some lessons for our current crisis, RS spoke over email with historian Brett Holman, author of a 2016 journal article entitled “The Phantom Airship Panic of 1913: Imagining Aerial Warfare in Britain before the Great War.”

The following conversation has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

RS: To start off, can you summarize the Phantom Airship Panic of 1913? Do we know what they were actually seeing?

Holman: For several months in early 1913, thousands of people right across the breadth of the United Kingdom reported seeing hundreds of airships in the skies above where there shouldn’t have been any. This was still very early in the era of flight, and aircraft were still quite rare. Airships were rarer still; the British military, for example, only possessed three small airships, with only a couple in private hands.

The obvious explanation seemed to be that the airships were German Zeppelins, since these were by far the most advanced airships in existence, enormous machines capable of flying hundreds of miles from their bases and back. And, of course, from 1915 Zeppelins did bomb London and other British cities. But Germany denied responsibility for the phantom airships, and no records have ever been found to support the idea that Zeppelins carried out such overflights in peacetime, especially on such a massive scale. We can’t be sure what it was that people were actually seeing, but hoaxes, searchlights, geese, and the planet Venus were all put forward as alternative explanations at the time.

What drove popular British fears about the phantom dirigibles?

An Irish Interlude – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on February 18, 2023

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2023/02/ira-katz/an-irish-interlude/

By Ira Katz

With all of the problems in the world, the small moments of refreshing human contact should be appreciated. Last Friday I was on the metro line 6 in Paris going from Bir Hakeem (the Eiffel Tower) to Etoile (the Arc de Triomphe). An Irish family entered the car at the same time I did. It was a typically cool February day in Paris and listening to the Irish accent of the parents with their kids, I began to think of a pint of Guinness.

I was on my way to a restaurant in Montmartre to have dinner with my wife near where she was working. I also planned to do my daily walk in Paris. It is about two miles from the Arc de Triomphe to the Moulin Rouge. The walking route passes through Parc Monceau. It is a lovely greenspace, bubbling with children at play,  an emerald set in a fashionable neighborhood of luxurious Hausmannian townhouses. The neighborhood changes, literally across the tracks, the several lines leaving Gare Saint Lazare. Here it is much more commercial with not the same level of affluence. The route continues through the Place de Clichy, where  François Truffaut set much of his classic The 400 Blows. Just past there, 100 m from the Moulin Rouge, I found Corcoran’s Irish Pub.

I was more than one hour in advance and only five minutes from the restaurant, so I stopped for that pint of Guinness that came to my mind on the metro. The place was almost empty, surprising to me it being 6 PM on a Friday night, so there were plenty of free places at the bar. Just after my pint was served four people tumbled into the pub and placed themselves at the angle of the bar next to me. There were two women in their 40s, and what I thought was an attractive young couple in their mid 20s. They were in a jovial mood and immediately ordered four Baby Guinnesses. I thought they must be small, half-pints of Guinness. In fact, a Baby Guinness does not contain Guinness, but is a shot of coffee liqueur and Irish Cream made to look like a Gunniess with the white cream floating on top of the black liqueur (more below). As the four shots were being prepared another was ordered for the bartender. And in short order a sixth was ordered for me.

Drinks lead to conversation. First, they were incredulous about my name. The name IRA is not common in Ireland except for a certain organization. The women in their 40s had lived in Paris even longer than I have. We talked about being expats and raising children with English speaking parents in France. The young couple were in fact brother and sister, and the nephew and niece of one of the women, and had just arrived from Ireland to visit their aunt. We talked about where they lived near Dublin. Then I mentioned my knowledge of Ireland and the town of Sligo. This was also the favorite Irish town of my new friends. There was not a word about Covid, Ukraine, ….

Back in the last century I was watching the John Wayne film The Quiet Man. This viewing incited me to use my frequent flier miles for a trip to Ireland. I was living in San Antonio, TX so I was in search of cool and wet weather in the summer.  Experiencing the Irish weather in August was like a reprieve from the inferno. The morning after I arrived in Dublin I walked down to the Connolly Train Station and took the next train out of town, leaving the destination totally to chance.  To my good fortune the destination was Sligo on the northwest coast of the island.  It was a tight little town with many small shops, churches on the hills, and the picturesque Garavogue River flowing through the heart of it into Sligo Bay.

The Forgotten Terrorist Pretext of the Vietnam War | The Libertarian Institute

Since 9/11, terrorism has become the ultimate entitlement program for America’s political elite. Whether it is illegally spying on Americans or blowing Somali dissidents to pieces, invoking terrorism provides all the cover needed for Washington policymakers. But the disastrous results of granting politicians a blank check to fight terrorism should have been undeniable almost 60 years ago.

Back in the 1960s, terrorism was what the communists did. Anti-terrorist moral fervor and ideological blinders propelled the U.S. into its biggest foreign policy blunder since World War II.

As the French Foreign Legion struggled to reconquer Vietnam in the wake of World War II, the U.S. government constantly embellished the storyline to demonize the communist opposition. A CIA operative provided materials for a massive bomb that ripped through a main square in Saigon in 1952. A Life magazine photographer was waiting on the scene, and his resulting snap appeared with a caption blaming the carnage on Viet Minh Communists. The New York Times headlined its report: “Reds’ Time Bombs Rip Saigon Center.” The bombing was touted as “one of the most spectacular and destructive single incidents in the long history of revolutionary terrorism” committed by “agents here of the Vietminh.” The press coverage boosted public support for U.S. government aid to the French army fighting the Communists. A Vietnamese warlord named General Trinh Minh Thé, a CIA collaborator, claimed credit for the bomb but the U.S. media ignored his statement.

In the wake of the French defeat in 1954, U.S. military advisors poured into Vietnam. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared: “Now we have a problem in making our power credible, and Vietnam is the place.” The Kennedy administration sought credibility by profoundly deceiving the American people and Congress regarding its Vietnam policy. JFK violated the limits on the number of American military advisors established in the 1954 Geneva peace treaty between the French and the Vietnamese communists. He also deceived the American public by mislabeling the growing U.S. contingent in South Vietnam as advisors at a time when they were becoming actively engaged in fighting.

The US government regarded the South Vietnamese government headed by Ngo Dinh Diem as corrupt, oppressive, and inept. The Pentagon Papers described a May 8, 1963 debacle in the city of Hue, South Vietnam: “Government troops fire on a Buddhist protest demonstration, killing nine and wounding fourteen. The incident triggers a nationwide Buddhist protest and a crisis of popular confidence for the Diem regime. [The Government of South Vietnam] maintains the incident was an act of [Viet Cong] terrorism.”

The Diem government was outraged that the Buddhists demanded legal equality with Catholics and the right to fly the Buddhist flag. In August 1963, South Vietnamese Special Forces “carried out midnight raids against Buddhist pagodas throughout the country. More than 1,400 people, mostly monks were arrested and many of them were beaten,” according to the Pentagon Papers. The CIA was bankrolling these Special Forces, which were supposed to be used for covert operations against the Viet Cong or North Vietnam, not for religious repression. Diem’s terrorizing of the Buddhists swayed the U.S. to back a coup that led to his assassination a few months later.

The Forgotten Lessons of The Military’s Forced Anthrax Vaccination of its Pilots

Posted by M. C. on February 18, 2023

https://open.substack.com/pub/amidwesterndoctor/p/the-forgotten-lessons-of-the-militarys?utm_source=direct&r=iw8dv&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

A Midwestern Doctor

Executive Summary:

  • One of the most troubling consequences of the COVID-19 vaccines are the implications for airline safety– there have been numerous harrowing cases recently involving airline pilots having heart attacks or dying, which, almost resulted in  a catastrophe .
  • A strong case can be made that much of what we have seen with the COVID-19 vaccine policies and mandates were beta-tested by the Department of Defense (DoD) with the remarkably dangerous anthrax vaccines 20 to 30 years ago.
  • Although maintaining the health of pilots is critically important for the military, continuing the anthrax vaccine program took priority over the pilots’ welfare.
  • Observing how the military handled these issues is thus quite instructive for comprehending the gross malfeasance that can be seen in the U.S. government’s current actions.

Introduction

Now that the narrative is beginning to shift, those who supported it are grasping for reasons to explain their incorrect decisions to support lockdowns, uphold the denial of early treatment for COVID-19, and advocate for perpetual vaccine mandates. For example:

I, in turn, have identified two characteristics that kept some people from being pulled into the narrative early on, and in many cases, one without the other was not sufficient to prevent a person from vaccinating (e.g., I know quite a few people who had serious objections to the childhood vaccine program, but nonetheless chose to receive a COVID vaccine).

First, the majority of people utilize the “social proof” heuristic, whereby they typically make decisions based on the experiences of their peers. The social proof heuristic (commonly associated with the Asch experiments) helps to explain why a nonsensical message being widely disseminated throughout the media, rapidly results in many members of the public then adopting it, and why the medical profession can often become incapable of seeing evidence that challenges a prevailing orthodoxy.

Conversely, there is always a minority of the population who do not require social proof to make decisions, and they will typically be the first to adopt a new trend (such as buying a stock before everyone else catches on and its value skyrockets). I have found that virtually every individual I’ve gotten to know who bucked the COVID-19 narrative has shared this personality trait.

Second, the same types of crimes tend to be perpetrated repeatedly on the public, so those who become wise to them are less likely to fall for them in the future. In the case of COVID-19, almost every single misdeed that we saw transpire had played out in the past (e.g., RFK has done a remarkable job bringing attention to what Anthony Fauci did in the early days of HIV, and how he used an almost identical script for COVID-19). Because of this, if you can learn what transpired before, you can prevent it from happening again, and putting a spotlight on these longstanding issues is a key focus of The Forgotten Side of Medicine.

In addition to the early days of AIDS, one of the most important precedents for the COVID-19 response was the largely forgotten anthrax vaccine debacle.

Gulf War Syndrome (GWS)

The Gulf War was a rapid and overwhelming victory for the United States that had very few battlefield casualties for our armed forces. However, soon after the war, almost 36% of soldiers (approximately 250,000 of the 697,000 who served) came down with a debilitating illness that eventually came to be known as “Gulf War Syndrome (GWS).” Initially, the military gaslighted the veterans by insisting that the illness was due to stress (which for many reasons was nonsensical), and then introduced a variety of contradictory studies to explain what else could be causing GWS.

Although a case can be made for many of the potential causes of GWS, by far the strongest case exists for the experimental anthrax vaccination campaign that was conducted during the Gulf War. This is because GWS was almost nonexistent in the other nations who participated in the Gulf War but did not vaccinate their troops, and an illness identical to GWS was observed in troops who were vaccinated but never left the United States (including those who were vaccinated a decade after the Gulf War).

Will 2023 Be the Year “Climate” Becomes the New COVID?

Posted by M. C. on February 18, 2023

Limits on the amount of meat and dairy you’ll be allowed to consume.

No kidding! A full three new clothing items per person per year. What? You want a jacket for the cold? You selfish planet killer, you!

Create a set of “green” requirements you have to meet for your home to be “carbon neutral” or some hogwash. These requirements will be increasingly outrageous and mean many will be unable to afford the costs of retrofitting their home according to the climate nazis. As a result, these homes will become “stranded assets.”

by Chris MacIntosh

Do we get another virus scare?

Perhaps, but fear not as I’ve the perfect strategy for you. If they lock you down and order you to wear masks, just carry on about your business but take a pile of Jehovah’s Witnesses booklets with you everywhere you go and when approached by some mask nazi, immediately launch into “have you been saved?”

If that doesn’t work, pretend they’re an old lost friend and while smiling broadly ostentatiously and loudly say, “Hey, so good to see you. How’ve you been?” Then proceed to give them a hug, a peck on the cheek, or — if you’re feeling particularly energetic about it all — a passionate smooch. It’ll have them running for cover and allow you to carry on your business because who wants to deal with a crazy person, right?

In all seriousness, I think we’re more likely for now to see the climate nazis go full retard. They’ll shelve Covid for now and bring on some other virus later which will likely do real damage to the now billions with weakened immune systems.

“The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule.” H. L. MENCKEN

I think at this stage we all know that and can see it coming. The question is more HOW is it coming?

According to the central planners, here’s some of the things we can look forward to.

Limits on the amount of meat and dairy you’ll be allowed to consume.

Don’t worry, it gets better. Clothing yourself and your family.

No kidding! A full three new clothing items per person per year. What? You want a jacket for the cold? You selfish planet killer, you!

What We Know About The US Air Force’s Balloon Party So Far

Posted by M. C. on February 18, 2023

In an article titled “Object downed by US missile may have been amateur hobbyists’ $12 balloon,” The Guardian’s Richard Luscombe reports

And it looks like that is indeed what happened. On Tuesday the National Security Council’s John Kirby said the “leading explanation” for the three unidentified flying objects that were shot down is that they were “balloons tied to some commercial or benign purpose.” On Thursday President Biden told the press that “The intelligence community’s current assessment is that these three objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation, or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research.”

Caitlin Johnstone

https://open.substack.com/pub/caitlinjohnstone/p/what-we-know-about-the-us-air-forces?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android

You know, everyone’s always talking about how the US military is only ever used to kill foreigners for resource control and generate profits for the military-industrial complex, but that’s not entirely true. Turns out the US military is also used for shooting down party balloons.

In an article titled “Object downed by US missile may have been amateur hobbyists’ $12 balloon,” The Guardian’s Richard Luscombe reports the following:

The Northern Illinois Bottlecap Balloon Brigade says one of its hobby craft went “missing in action” over Alaska on 11 February, the same day a US F-22 jet downed an unidentified airborne entity not far away above Canada’s Yukon territory.

In a blogpost, the group did not link the two events. But the trajectory of the pico balloon before its last recorded electronic check-in at 12.48am that day suggests a connection – as well as a fiery demise at the hands of a sidewinder missile on the 124th day of its journey, three days before it was set to complete its seventh circumnavigation.

If that is what happened, it would mean the US military expended a missile costing $439,000 (£365,000) to fell an innocuous hobby balloon worth about $12 (£10).

“The descriptions of all three unidentified objects shot down Feb. 10-12 match the shapes, altitudes and payloads of the small pico balloons, which can usually be purchased for $12-180 each, depending on the type,” writes Steve Trimble for Aviation Week, who first broke the Bottlecap Balloon Brigade story.

“The Chinese are humiliated” 🙃 theguardian.com/us-news/2023/f…

This information would put a bit of a wobble on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s comments to ABC’s This Week on Sunday that all three of the balloons shot down through the weekend were Chinese surveillance devices, saying “the Chinese were humiliated” by the US catching them in their sinister espionage plot. If the US air force did in fact just spent millions of dollars shooting down American party balloons, it wouldn’t be the Chinese who are humiliated.
