How We Got a National-Security Police State, Part 1 – The Future of Freedom Foundation

Posted by M. C. on December 24, 2022

Within the Bill of Rights was a fascinating grouping of four amendments: the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Eighth Amendments. Our ancestors believed that at some point, federal officials would want to kill people, incarcerate them, or take away their property. Thus, those four amendments address what must happen before those things can occur.

The biggest mistake America has ever made since the inception of our country was the conversion of the federal government from a limited-government republic to a national-security state. It is the reason that all of us have been born and raised under what can only be called a national-security police state.

Throughout history, governments have been vested with inherent powers to do what officials felt was in the best interests of the people. Our American ancestors rejected that concept insofar as the federal government was concerned. The Constitution created one of the most unusual governmental structures ever — one in which the federal government would not have the traditional powers that were inherent to government. Instead, the federal government’s powers were limited to those few powers that were enumerated in the Constitution. If a power wasn’t listed, it simply could not be exercised.

This radically different governmental structure shocked the world. People couldn’t believe that a citizenry of a country was actually dictating to their government what it could and couldn’t do. Everyone was accustomed to the opposite — where government dictates to the citizenry what they can and cannot do.

A limited-government republic

A limited-government republic is what Americans wanted. They didn’t trust the federal government. Unlike so many Americans today, our American ancestors never believed that the biggest threat to their freedom and well-being lay with foreign regimes or foreign groups. Instead, Americans were convinced that the greatest threat to their freedom and well-being lay with their very own federal government. That’s why they wanted it to have so few powers — so that it would lack the ability to do bad things to them.

Thus, for more than a century, the United States had only a small, basic military force — one that was sufficiently large to protect settlers from attacks by Native Americans and to serve as a mobilizing force in the event the United States was ever invaded. Our American ancestors fiercely opposed a large, permanent military-intelligence establishment — what they called “standing armies” — because they believed that a standing army would ultimately destroy their freedom and their well-being. They instead believed in the concept of “citizen soldiers” — well-armed and self-trained citizens who would be willing to come to the defense of their country if it were ever invaded by a foreign power.

Prior to the Constitutional Convention, Americans had been operating under the Articles of Confederation, under which the federal government’s powers were so few and weak that it didn’t even have the power to tax. Imagine: for more than a decade, the federal government operated without the ability to forcibly extract money from people.

The purpose of the Constitutional Convention was simply to modify the Articles of Confederation. Thus, imagine the surprise of our ancestors when they learned that the Convention came out instead with a proposal for a different governmental structure — a limited-government republic — one that gave the federal government more power, including the power to tax.

Needless to say, Americans were extremely leery. But they finally decided to go along with the deal under the assurance that the federal government’s powers were to be limited to those few powers enumerated in the Constitution.

The Bill of Rights

But there was one condition that Americans imposed in return for accepting the new Constitution. They demanded the enactment of a Bill of Rights immediately after ratification of the Constitution. The Bill of Rights reflected the conviction of the American people that the federal government was an enormous threat to their freedom and well-being. With the Bill of Rights, Americans wanted to drive the point home — that federal officials were absolutely prohibited from infringing on people’s fundamental, natural, God-given rights.

The Bill of Rights should actually have been called the Bill of Prohibitions. That’s because it doesn’t give people rights at all. As the Declaration of Independence observes, people’s rights preexist government. It is the duty of government to protect, not destroy, such rights.

Thus, the First and Second Amendments protected from federal assault such rights as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and the right to keep and bear arms. The Ninth Amendment made it clear that people have more rights than those enumerated in the Bill of Rights.

An unusual society

Because its powers were so few, throughout the 19th century the federal government didn’t have much to do. The result was the most unusual society in history. Imagine:

Zelda, The Bravest Spider

December daredevil

Daniel McAdams

Tonight is the end of Zelda’s life. She is the bravest orb weaver I’ve ever known. No one sets up an elaborate web in Texas in mid-December. They are all gone by October. Along with the mosquitoes.

What was she thinking?

But there she was, displaying her formidable beauty. A Platonic form of her existence. Perfection.

Set up from the hedge outside my office window. Proud as a sunrise. From the hedge extending up to the soffit. The cheekiness of spring. That was Zelda.

Are you insane, Zelda? This is December. Where darkness reigns. You think it is April?

I wanted to settle in and talk to her, but she was stoic and unresponsive. Only bracing herself against the wind, awaiting eagerly and perhaps desperately the misadventure of a wandering flying creature. Nature’s GPS malfunction.

It was a storefront set up in a bad neighborhood. Yes there were still a few mosquitoes, Zelda, but surely you did not think that this late in the season you would find flies and moths and even anoles.

Zelda, you gave us false hope that we could beat the seasons. That winter would not consume us.

You ebbed and flowed and surfed the light winds in an awfully confident way and I am not ashamed to admit you tricked us.

As the wind picked up I saw you desperately leave your elaborate silk castle to cling to the heat emanating from the vent in the soffit. You were defeated.

I wanted this story to be of your triumph. I set out to photograph you standing strong amidst the dark freeze and wind, confident in who you are.

Alas Zelda, you abandoned ship and sought refuge under the soffit vent. Saving yourself alone. You have already eaten your husband. As alarming as it may sound, we husbands if we are being honest find this not unfamiliar. We all seem to be eaten and disappeared.

I don’t blame you, Zelda.

Zelda it is not yet midnight and the windchill is nine degrees. You lurk under the vent in the soffit, but your days are numbered.

I will open the door to a very hard chill and look about and Zelda will be gone. As if she never came.

Liberals Who Ditched Tesla And Bought Chevrolet Bolt Now Hit With Recall Over Fire Risk

Posted by M. C. on December 23, 2022

16.5% winter range reduction due to cold weather…I must have missed that on CNN.

You didn’t plan on using the heater and radio also, did you?

…Not only is there recall due to fire risk, but also Bolt owners have to deal with extreme ‘winter range anxiety‘ as colder temperatures can reduce range by as much as 32%. Teslas vehicles, on average, lost around 16.5% of range in cold weather.

This isn’t the first fire risk for Bolts. There has been a series of other recalls where General Motors asked Bolt owners to park “at least 50 feet” from other vehicles due to battery fire risks.

Here’s What’s In The ‘Ugliest’ Omnibus Bill Ever

Posted by M. C. on December 23, 2022

One reporter asked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer how the bill was “functional,” to require legislators to read a bill of that size in such a short period of time.

“How is it functional process to drop a 4,100 page bill this morning and expect a vote on it tomorrow?” asked a reporter, adding “Most of Congress hasn’t had a chance to review this.”

This week, while Democrats still (barely) have enough power to pass it, the 117th Congress is about to rush through a 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that the WSJ Editorial Board has called the “worst in history.”

This is no way to govern in a democracy, but here we are,” the board writes.

The final bill was quietly dropped Monday in the ‘dead of night’ – and by Thursday, if all goes to plan, it will get rushed through for a vote.

I brought with me the omni, 4,155 pages. When was it produced? In the dead of night. 1:30 in the morning it was released,” said Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) during a press conference with Sens. Mike Braun, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee and Rick Scott – the only dissenting Senate Republicans.

Overall, the bill contains $858 billion for defense – an increase of 9.7%, and $45 billion more than President Biden sought. It will, among other things, give military members a 4.6% raise and help replenish dwindling weapons stocks. $45 billion has also been earmarked for new military and economic aid for Ukraine.

“What is more dangerous to the country? $1.1 Trillion in new debt or as Republican leadership likes to say, “Oh, it is a win! It is a big win. We’re getting $45 billion for the military,”” said Paul. “So which is more important? Which threatens the country more? Are we at risk of being invaded by a foreign power if we don’t put $45 billion into the military? Are we more at risk by adding to a $31 trillion debt?”

Senate Passes Monster Spending Package With Backing From 18 Republicans

Posted by M. C. on December 23, 2022

The $1.7 trillion bill is loaded with earmarks, carveouts, and favors for numerous lawmakers. The bill also contains provisions such as $410 million in funding for border security for the countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, and Oman. That provision was pointed out by Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) as an example of questionable spending.

The bill also contains $1.2 million for “LGBTQIA+ Pride Centers,” $477,000 for the Equity Institute in Rhode Island “to indoctrinate teachers with ‘antiracism virtual labs,’” and $3 million for the American LGBTQ+ Museum, according to The Heritage Foundation.

The Senate passed a $1.7 trillion spending package Thursday on a 68-29 vote, with 18 Republicans joining Democrats to push the massive omnibus over the line.

Congressional leaders are rushing to get the bill through Congress and to President Joe Biden’s desk before the federal government hits its Friday deadline and runs out of funding. Congress passed a stopgap funding measure, known as a continuing resolution, last week to fund the government up until the day before Christmas Eve.

The Republican senators who voted to pass the bill include Roy Blunt of Missouri, John Boozman of Arkansas, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Susan Collins of Maine, John Cornyn of Texas, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rob Portman of Ohio, Mitt Romney of Utah, Mike Rounds of South Dakota, Richard Shelby of Alabama, John Thune of South Dakota, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, and Todd Young of Indiana.

Senior lawmakers unveiled the text of the 4,155-page omnibus bill in the early morning hours on Tuesday. The Senate voted 70-25 on Tuesday to move the bill through a procedural vote to begin debate, easily clearing the 60-vote threshold. Only 51 votes were required to pass the bill.

The spending package has faced outspoken opposition from a group of conservatives in the Senate, as well as public criticism from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a leading contender to be the next House speaker.

Should Christians Vote for Marijuana Legalization? – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on December 22, 2022

No one should have to vote to legalize marijuana. Freedom should be the default position

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2022/12/laurence-m-vance/should-christians-vote-for-marijuana-legalization/

By Laurence M. Vance

In the recent midterm election, voters in 37 states also had the option of deciding on 132 statewide ballot measures. Five of those ballot measures were related to marijuana. Two of them passed.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in Missouri and Maryland, bringing the total number of states where it is legal to 21. In 14 of those states, recreational marijuana was legalized via a ballot measure. Ballot measures to legalize the recreational use of marijuana failed to pass in Arkansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Medical marijuana has been legalized in 37 states. In 18 of those states, medical marijuana was legalized via a ballot measure.

The question before us then is this: Should Christians vote for marijuana legalization? Should they vote for the legalization of medical marijuana and recreational marijuana, should they vote for just the legalization of medical marijuana, or should they vote against all marijuana ballot initiatives?

Most Christians vote. Although I am a Christian, I don’t vote, which puts me in the minority. In some conservative churches, voting is almost looked upon as being in the church’s statement of faith—as long as one votes Republican.

Conversely, most Christians don’t use marijuana—and especially for recreational purposes. I don’t use marijuana for medical or recreational purposes, which puts me in the majority. However, I don’t think marijuana should be illegal, which not only puts me in the minority, it makes me a heretic in some circles.

When I say that most Christians vote and that most Christians don’t use marijuana, I mean most Christians, whether liberal or conservative, Catholic or Protestant, evangelical or mainline, or progressive or fundamentalist.

So, if most Christians vote, and most Christians don’t use marijuana, then it seems intuitive that most Christians would not vote for marijuana legalization.

They should.
