Happy Hour May Be Getting a Little Happier – The Future of Freedom Foundation

“It’s five o’clock somewhere,” so the song and the story go. This phrase is used by those wishing to justify drinking alcohol at some point during the day instead of waiting until the usual evening hours.What is even more tragic about all of this is that most Americans accept the role of government as the alcohol gatekeeper.

But a happy hour is not always just an hour.

In 39 of the 50 states, some restaurants, bars, and nightclubs have happy hour from 5 to 7 on Monday through Friday, or at some other period of time that is more than an hour. During happy hour, discounted drinks and food are offered, and sometimes along with some other perks.

However, in 11 of 50 states in the “land of the free,” there is no happy hour. Happy hour bans are in effect in the states of Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, and Vermont.

But happy hour may be getting a little happier.

In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, State Representative for the 26th Middlesex District, Mike Connolly, a self-described “activist, attorney, renter, proud progressive Democrat and DSA member,” has introduced a bill (HD.3896) to “revisit the state’s ban on Happy Hour, in place since 1984.” The bill is technically “an Act providing for immediate and long-term relief for restaurants and bars in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.” Connolly cites a new Massachusetts poll showing that “70% of Massachusetts residents [polled] support allowing bars and restaurants to offer discounted after-work drinks.”

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said he wasn’t interested in reversing the ban, however, because of the “awful, horrible, terrible experiences on a very regular basis that came with happy hours back in the day.”

Surprisingly, the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) says it doesn’t have a position on whether a happy hour ban should be lifted: “MADD isn’t against the consumption of alcohol by those 21 and over. It’s simply if you drink, don’t drive. It’s about making the right choice, planning ahead if your plans include alcohol and using a rideshare or having a designated driver.”

The ban was introduced in Massachusetts after an incident that occurred in the parking lot of a Braintree mall on the night of September 9, 1983:

On that Friday night, Kathleen Barry, 20, of Weymouth, met her friends at Ground Round, where they had won free pitchers of beer in a “name that tune” game, according to a Boston Herald story and George McCarthy, then chairman of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

After leaving the bar, Barry and a friend climbed on top of another friend’s 1975 Chevrolet sedan for a joy-ride around the King’s Plaza parking lot in Braintree, according to a Boston Herald account. Barry fell under the car and was dragged 50 feet, breaking her neck, arms and legs. The driver had consumed at least seven beers, according to the ABCC.

As a result, on November 21, 1984, then-Governor Michael Dukakis “approved a new ABCC regulation that banned bars from giving out free drinks, selling more than two drinks at a time to one person, offering discounted drinks or offering them as prizes.” At the time, Massachusetts was the only state that banned happy hours, but the ban soon spread to some 20 other states.

But note that the issue here was not that the government was seeking to limit the number of alcoholic drinks that someone could consume during a given period. The real issue was the price of the drinks. In fact, happy hour laws don’t say that bar patrons can purchase only x number of drinks during happy hour. To the contrary, anyone can go to a bar during happy hour and purchase any number of drinks he chooses to, as long as he is willing to pay full price. All these laws generally say is that alcoholic drinks can’t be discounted during a particular time.

So, in reality, happy hour laws are merely just another government attempt to regulate prices. Thus, these laws are related to price-gouging laws, predatory-pricing and lending laws, dumping laws, and ticket-scalping laws.

The difference between happy hour laws and these other price-control laws is the reason that the government gives to justify the law. Governments in every state have taken it upon themselves to regulate, control, and even prohibit alcohol and all manner of things associated with alcohol.

Governments regulate the price, the manufacture, the distribution, and the selling of alcohol; the opening and closing times of bars and restaurants that serve alcohol; the days of the week on which alcohol can be sold; the hours of the day during which alcohol can be sold; and the drinking age. Thirty-three states allow localities to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages. Seventeen states are “alcoholic beverage control” states in which the state government controls the wholesaling, and often the retailing, of distilled spirits and, in some cases, beer and wine.

What is even more tragic about all of this is that most Americans accept the role of government as the alcohol gatekeeper.

In a free society, however, manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of alcohol are treated as any other business.

In a free society, businesses decide the days and hours that they will sell or serve alcohol.

In a free society, individuals decide how much alcohol they wish to purchase or drink.

And in a free society, any business can have a happy hour.

WASHINGTON – A fresh contingent of Marines arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Saturday as part of a 3,000troop force intended to secure an airlift of U.S. Embassy personnel and Afghan allies as Taliban insurgents approach the outskirts of the capital.

The last-minute decision to re-insert thousands of U.S. troops into Afghanistan reflects the dire state of security and calls into question whether President Joe Biden will meet his Aug. 31 deadline for fully withdrawing combat forces.

After an advance group of Marines arrived on Friday, more flowed into the Kabul international airport on Saturday, said Navy Capt. William Urban, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command. The Pentagon said on Friday that the bulk of the 3,000 – comprising two battalions of Marines and one of Army soldiers – are due by the end of the weekend.

Officials have stressed that the newly arriving troops’ mission is limited to assisting the airlift of embassy personnel and Afghan allies, and they expect to complete it by month’s end. But they might have to stay longer if the embassy is threatened by a Taliban takeover of Kabul by then.

“Clearly from their actions, it appears as if they are trying to get Kabul isolated,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said, referring to the Taliban’s speedy and efficient takedown of major provincial capitals this past week.

Biden had given the Pentagon until Aug. 31 to complete the withdrawal of the 2,500 to 3,000 troops that were in Afghanistan when he announced in April that he was ending U.S. involvement in the war. That number has dropped to just under 1,000, and all but about 650 are scheduled to be gone by the end of the month; the 650 are to remain to help protect the U.S. diplomatic presence, including with aircraft and defensive weapons at the Kabul airport. But Thursday’s decision to dispatch 3,000 fresh troops to the airport adds a new twist to the U.S. withdrawal.

There is no discussion of rejoining the war, but the number of troops needed for security will depend on decisions about keeping the embassy open and the extent of a Taliban threat to the capital in coming days.

Having the Aug. 31 deadline pass with thousands of U.S. troops in the country would be awkward for Biden given his insistence on ending the 20year U.S. war by that date. Republicans have already criticized the withdrawal as a mistake and ill-planned, though there’s little political appetite by either party to send fresh troops to fight the Taliban.

Kirby declined on Friday to discuss any assessment of whether the Taliban are likely soon to converge on Kabul, but the urgent movement of extra U.S. troops into Afghanistan to assist the embassy drawdown is clear evidence of Washington’s concernafter the rapid fall of major cities.

The Biden administration has asserted that Afghan security forces have tangible advantages over the insurgents, including a viable air force and superior numbers. The statement serves to highlight the fact that what the Afghan forces lack is motivation to fight in a circumstance where the Taliban seem to have decisive momentum.

Banks can lend out all savings holding nothing in reserve to fund withdrawals. If your bank goes belly up, can there be a bank run if there is nothing to run with?

Historically, banks are required to keep 10% of their loaned-out capital in reserves. However, the Fed just took an extraordinary step of reducing that to 0%.

Banks no longer to keep any assets in reserve. This will turn a house of cards into a gargantuan palace of cards.

To maintain his life and well-being, an individual must have at his disposal an adequate amount of consumer goods. These goods, however, are not readily available. Without tools at his disposal and by means of his bare hands, the individual can only obtain from nature very few goods for his survival.

For instance, take an individual John, stranded in a forest. In order to stay alive, he can only pick up some apples from an apple tree. Apples are the only good available to him that can sustain him. Let us say that by working twenty hours a day, he manages to secure twenty apples, which keep him alive. The twenty apples that John has secured from nature is his subsistence fund, which sustains him (see also on this Rothbard)[1].

John realizes that if he had a special stick this would allow him to become more productive. His daily production of apples could be forty apples (i.e., double his current production). The problem, however, is that the stick is not available—it must be made. To make the special stick requires two days of work. If John were to decide to make the stick, he would have a problem. By spending his time on making the stick, he would not be able to pick up the apples that are required to keep him alive.

The only way out of this predicament is for John to put aside an apple a day for the next forty days. By saving an apple out of his daily production and enduring hunger, after forty days he will have an adequate stock of apples that will sustain him while he is busy making the stick. (We make the unrealistic assumption here that apples can be preserved in edible form for forty days). Thus, after forty days, the John’s subsistence fund will be comprised of forty apples, which will see him through while he is making the special stick. We can see here that the saved or unconsumed forty apples enable the making of the stick, which raises the production of apples and lifts John’s living standard.

Note that the making of the stick is a burden—John has to make a sacrifice and save forty apples thereby endangering his health and well-being. However, the stick will allow him to double his production of apples. If he continues to consume twenty apples a day, this will allow John to increase his subsistence fund. With a larger fund, John could consider allocating his time to make some other tools to enhance his life and well-being.

The greater this fund, the longer is the roundabout factor of production that can be undertaken, and the greater the output will be. It is clear that under these conditions the “correct” length of the roundabout method of production is determined by the size of the subsistence fund or the period of time for which this fund suffices.[2]

The essence of the subsistence fund with respect to an individual, John, can be widened to include many individuals that trade with each other.

The Biden administration this week offered federal financial support to Florida school districts defying Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ban on mask mandates as the coronavirus surges in the state, according to reports. 

U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona wrote in a letter to DeSantis and state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran on Friday that defiant districts that lose state funding would have federal funds available to them, according to Politico. 

“Florida’s recent actions to block school districts from voluntarily adopting science-based strategies for preventing the spread of COVID-19 that are aligned with the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) puts students and staff at risk,” Cardona wrote in the letter, adding he was “deeply concerned” by DeSantis’ July 30 anti-mask mandate executive order. 

Cardona said the districts were in line with guidance from the CDC, which earlier this month recommended universal mask-wearing in K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status, to slow the spread of the delta variant.

“We are eager to partner with [the Florida Department of Education] on any efforts to further our shared goals of protecting the health and safety of students and educators,” he added. “If FLDOE does not wish to pursue such an approach, the Department will continue to work directly with the school districts and educators that serve Florida’s students.”

Christina Pushaw, a DeSantis spokeswoman, called out the Biden administration for giving more support to “superintendents and elected politicians, who don’t believe that parents have a right to choose what’s best for their children, than on Florida’s students, which is what these funds should be used for,” Politico reported.

U.S.—In a clever ploy to fight global warming, scientists have renamed “climate change” to “COVID,” so that Americans will immediately give up all their rights in order to fight the unprecedented phenomenon where weather trends change over time.

“Listen up, guys—we’re not calling it ‘climate change’ anymore,” said climate researcher Dr. Brittany Boyd. “We’re going with ‘COVID,’ which stands for ‘climate oscillation & variation into destruction’—this will ensure people will listen to us and quickly surrender all their liberties to fight climate cha—sorry, I mean, COVID.”

According to Dr. Boyd, studies have shown that if you refer to the coronavirus instead of climate change, Americans who otherwise wouldn’t care about climate science will stumble over themselves to be locked in their homes and give up all rights to their state and federal governments to help out.

“COVID is going to destroy us in less than 12 years,” said Al Gore to a packed house. “We must stop this by purchasing as many of my books as possible, so I can fly to more places to spread the word about COVID.”

All books previously referring to climate change have been destroyed, just as the ones referring to “global warming” were destroyed before them. “There will only be an endless present in which we are always right,” said Boyd.

None other than conservative talk show host Larry Elder because he actually is followed by what seems to be a plurality of the people. In an environment in which trust is very low, any amount of the genuine article, earned by exposing oneself to the worst that the establishment can dish out, is priceless.

Republican officials’ timidity with regard to the outrages that the Democratic Party is committing against the American people under the Biden Administration dampens the American people’s urge to resist. Their default of leadership helps the Democrats’ seizure of long-term oligarchic power. The people’s deep resentment, however, will follow whoever and whatever ventures offer protection. As ever, leadership falls to whomever actually leads.

Unanimously, Republican officials denounce the Biden Administration’s decision to suspend laws requiring rent payments, while continuing to enforce landlords’ obligations to pay their mortgages. But no official is organizing landlords to band together to withhold their mortgage payments from banks. 

Nearly all Republicans decry the government’s collaboration with airlines, schools, and big businesses to establish vaccine passports as conditions to return to normal life. The same goes for mask mandates. All know that public health is an excuse for long-term social control. Yet no one is organizing the majority of Americans who object to this into groups the size of which enable them to stop this power grab. 

No Republican official dissents from the vast majority of Americans who are aghast at the opening of our southern border, and at certain Democrats’ assertion that illegal aliens are essentially “Americans” who should have the right to vote. No Republican has suggested that the next Congress and president has the power and obligation to deport each and every one of them. 

Countless Americans seethe at being targeted as white supremacists whose every objection to government power is presumptively criminal. But no Republican politician has promised to hold to account any and all officials who so abuse their fellow citizens. 

Most Republicans denounce the Biden Administration’s expenditure of trillions of borrowed dollars to further empower themselves, resulting immediately in higher prices for everything, and pricing more and more Americans out of home ownership. Yet nearly half of Senate Republicans voted to approve the $1.3 trillion “infrastructure” bill.

And yet we may be sure that any number of Republicans imagine themselves as candidates for the presidency in 2024. One may ask on what basis senators, who might have used their national standing to organize and lead Americans into collective protective actions but chose not to, will ask for the people’s votes. All will point to statements of theirs that complain about each and every abuse. But joining in the beleaguered Americans’ complaints does nothing to relieve them. Attitude is not the same thing as leadership. That goes for all, from former President Donald Trump to Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

Republicans who hold state or local office, and who use their powers to their limits, are in a category of their own. Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, the most prominent of these, has effectively interposed state authority to protect his citizens insofar as that is possible. Some governors and legislators have pledged non-compliance with eventual federal legislation that does away with requirements for identification in elections. Any number of county sheriffs have declared they will not enforce many actual or threatened regulations. In North Carolina, newly elected Republican congressman Madison Cawthorn led a group of citizens to protest a school board’s imposition of a racist curriculum. 

In short, wherever real leadership arises, the people reward it by following it. At some point, local leadership must translate into national leadership, if only because that is the only kind of leadership that now exists.

Perhaps, then, there is little use in decrying the Republican establishment’s effective abdication. They act as they do for a variety of reasons of their own. Some hold back for fear of presuming Donald Trump’s supposed prerogative to lead. But as time passes, Trump’s partisans become as compelled as anyone else to ask where, precisely, words without practical consequence would lead? Others’ reticence is all too clearly connected to their fear of taking upon themselves the wrath of a now nearly all-powerful oligarchy. For whatever purpose, most of the Republican Party is disqualifying itself for reasons of no relevance to the rest of us.

This is what has happened in California. Republicans have not challenged Democrats statewide for nearly a generation. The Democratic Party, exercising a supermajority in the legislature as well as control of each and every institution in the state, has governed in a way that alienated the majority of the state’s residents, causing uncounted numbers of citizens to flee, seeking refuge in other states. The effort to recall the governor who symbolizes this state of affairs came from ordinary people, not from Republican officials. And the Republicans who have sought to profit from those efforts have drawn little public support—money notwithstanding.

And yet it seems that the recall is poised to succeed. And who is most likely to be the next governor of ultra-liberal California? None other than conservative talk show host Larry Elder because he actually is followed by what seems to be a plurality of the people. In an environment in which trust is very low, any amount of the genuine article, earned by exposing oneself to the worst that the establishment can dish out, is priceless.

In sum, the combination of establishment misrule and Republican impotence leaves the field open to whomever takes it upon himself to lead.

My Pillow man Mike Lindell’s three-day Cyber Symposium demonstrated a couple of things about the current depraved state of our nation: You could prove pretty conclusively that the national election of 2020 was saturated with fraud; and that no one in the news business would either care or dare to report it. Otherwise, it’s a little early to tell whether the exercise will have any effect on the country’s mood, though it is apparently a fact that millions tuned into the event on the few Internet sites that evaded the efforts to hack it out of existence.

The presentations by physicist Douglas Frank, law professor (New Mexico State U) David Clements, and retired army intelligence analyst Seth Keshel made a multi-dimensional case that the Dominion vote tallying machines were both pre-programmed with insidious algorithms and were also run remotely by Internet connection through servers in Senegal tied to China the night of Nov. 3, 2020. Even so, the vote in favor of Donald Trump so overwhelmed the programming that oafish mopping-up operations with bogus write-in paper ballots had to be conducted on-the-fly to make sure the election came out in “Joe Biden’s” favor.

It was interesting to be reminded that four key states — Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin — all claimed to have stopped counting votes around 10:30 eastern time, and nobody reporting the tally on TV (a national ritual going back seventy years) seemed to consider anything irregular about it. But since when in US elections do officials not work through the whole of election night to reach a result? The answer, of course, is never before. It is, as they say, not a thing. Shouldn’t that have been a national WTF moment?

And so began the secret after-hours hijinks, such as in the Fulton County, GA, arena, where poll watchers were shooed out of the joint and then ballot-counters supplied by a Stacey Abrams-owned temp worker company got foolishly caught on a security camera running reams of paper ballots multiple times through their machines… and the arrival in Philadelphia of a truck from Long Island delivering tens of thousands of fresh paper ballots… and so on through the long night of supposedly no vote counting.

Obviously, aligned interests in the universe were determined to make sure that Mr. Trump would under no circumstances be allowed to win that election, as he had done to the incendiary mortification of Hillary Clinton & Company in 2016. He had to be gotten rid of in order to ensure continuity of the racketeering operation that government had become under the influence of money from China. Was it perhaps that simple?

Hard to say. There was the slime trail from Hunter Biden’s laptop files of emails and business memoranda showing an impressive cash flow between CCP-connected Chinese companies and the Biden Family’s bank accounts. But that was neatly suppressed by a coordinated effort between Twitter, Facebook, Google, and the news media. The Department of Justice then pretended to “open a case” against Hunter B, and the public never heard another peep about it. Not to mention that the DOJ sat on the laptop secretly during the February 2020 impeachment trial when the very matter at issue — the Biden Family’s illicit business dealings in Ukraine — was laid out in hard evidence on those laptop files, and withheld from the defense.

Barely a month later, the Manchurian candidate “Joe Biden” came fresh off thumping losses in the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary to “win” the Super Tuesday contest and prompt the dropping-out of his rivals for the nomination. Anyone else think that was more than just a little weird? Not to mention “Joe B’s” phantom election campaign — those pathetic venturings-out from his Wilmington crypt to a few events where nobody but the news media showed up? Never before, apparently, has the world beheld such a conquering hero!

And so here we are: eight months deep into a “Joe Biden” regime. Was ever so bold an attempt to utterly wreck a nation carried on in such plain sight? Who does not hear the “giant sucking sound” as America whirls down the drain? In the foreground, obscuring everything else, is the fog around the Covid-19 melodrama. It can’t possibly be about the vaxes, which, day by day, are demonstrating their growing inefficacy and lethal side-effects.

It appears to be much more about activating a Chinese model of social control. A great many citizens detect this and demur from vaxing-up. “Joe Biden’s” public health officers did not do a very good job convincing the “hesitant” to join in the vaccine orgy. It’s a hard sell while “Joe Biden’s” homeland security side shows a cavalier indifference to a million border-jumpers with a 40 percent Covid-19 infection rate not just walking into the country but being helpfully distributed hither-and-yon from sea to shining sea. Who is paying all those bus and plane fares?

The regime is trying to soften up the public for mandatory vaxes now, using its propaganda arms to turn up the volume on pandemic fear and new variants, using phony statistics and threats to turn the unvaxed into social pariahs, including schoolchildren. The regime is playing with nitroglycerine there. How desperate and crazy are they, really? Is something wicked coming their way? I think so, and I think they know it’s so, and I think they have just about run out of tricks for avoiding it. A crack in the edifice of tyrannical coercion materialized a few days ago when SecDef Lloyd Austin declared his intention to vax-up the whole military. General David Berger, Commandant of the US Marine Corps, briskly told the SecDef, in effect, to take a flying fuck at a rolling donut. What do you make of that?

Why Do Some People Support Tyranny While Others Defy It? – Alt-Market.us

The bottom line is this: Tyrannical systems are planned by elitists groups and governments and it is they that benefit most from the destruction of public freedoms. It is indeed a conspiracy, and the pandemic lockdowns and forced vaccine response are no exception. However, tyrannical systems could not be executed without the help of a larger psychopathic contingent of the population, and these people congregate together to make terrible things happen. It’s as if they hear a silent dog whistle as totalitarianism rises, or they smell the blood of innocent victims in the air.

There is a fundamental question that haunts the pages of history and it is one that has never been addressed in a satisfactory manner. There are many schools of thought on why and how tyranny rises in any given society and all of them miss the mark in terms of explanations, primarily because they all allow their biases to rule their conclusions and blind them to the deeper aspects of power and conspiracy. In other words, they are willing to go down the rabbit hole only so far, and then they deny that the rabbit hole even exists.

The common assumption when it comes to autocracy or oligarchy is that people are “stupid” and easily manipulated into following compelling personalities that make promises they never intend to keep. This is a foolish oversimplification. In truth, the level of manipulation needed to lure a majority of people into dictatorship is so complex that it requires an advanced understanding of human psychology.

In our modern era, people cannot merely be ordered to submit at gunpoint, at least not right away. They must be tricked into conforming, and not only that, but they must be made to think that it was THEIR IDEA all along. Without this dynamic of self censorship and self enslavement, the population will eventually rebel no matter how oppressive the regime. A thousand year tyranny cannot exist unless a number of people are conned into applauding it, or, they directly benefit from it.
