An economist looks at North Shore Search and Rescue

Posted by M. C. on August 10, 2024

How might, then, a competitive private mountain ownership system reduce the need for the services of NSS&R (they would be the first to welcome such an eventuality, since they want to save lives, not build an empire).

Walter Block

British Columbia’s North Shore Search and Rescue group is a very impressive organization. Over the years they have saved the lives of numerous hikers and skiers in the mountains to the north of Vancouver. It’s a private undertaking, financed by voluntary contributions. They have their own helicopters. Dozens of highly-skilled staff pilot these vehicles, go down on ropes to pick up the wounded, whisk them off to hospitals. They have their own doctors to assist with those in need. Sometimes, all too often, weather conditions interfere with or preclude their efforts, and all they can take out of the dangerous mountainous trails are human remains, which greatly saddens them.

They are heroes, a credit to this great country of ours.

How might an economist look at this organization? One question is the dollars spent per lives saved. How does it compare with other efforts to save lives, such as efforts to quell heart disease or cancer or obesity or smoking or traffic fatalities. The goal, presumably, is to equalize this statistic across all such efforts to maximize the bang for the buck in terms of lives saved. For if one avenue is more efficient than others, more money should be allocated in that direction to maximize results.

Another consideration is to realize that specialization and the division of labour are integral aspects of the dismal science. North Shore Search and Rescue only steps in when people are in trouble. But what about prevention?

The difficulty is that private enterprise does not heretofore play much of a role in this aspect of life saving. Why? Mainly because the government owns much of land in the mountains. How could privatization help reduce the demand for the always necessary services of NSS&R?

Here are the names of some of the mountains that lie to the North of West and North Vancouver: Grouse, Seymour, Black, Hollyburn, Strachan, Unnecessary, Lions, Goat, Dam, Crown, Fromme and Lynn. Imagine a scenario where all of them were fully privatized; there would be one owner for each.

A basic finding of economics is that competition brings about a better product at a lower price. The reason we have pretty good and relatively cheap shoes, socks, bicycles, computers, heaters, air conditioners, pens, pencils, paper clips, rubber bands, furniture, ketchup, bread, etc., is because these industries are run on a competitive basis. This also accounts for why the immigration traffic was from East to West Germany, from North to South Korea, and not the other way around.

How might, then, a competitive private mountain ownership system reduce the need for the services of NSS&R (they would be the first to welcome such an eventuality, since they want to save lives, not build an empire). It would be simple. Each owner would set up his own “rules of the road” and we would then be able to determine which system better promotes the safety of skiers, hikers, bikers, snowshoe walkers, etc.

Black and White and White and Black

Posted by M. C. on August 7, 2023

Similarly, capitalizing “black” into “Black” will somehow improve the lot of this demographic. One might as well do a rain dance to call forth a change in the weather.

Walter Block

Wokeism has taken over much more than merely academia. It has functioned as a tapeworm, also, in Wall Street, Hollywood, high tech, even the military. This DEI virus has seeped into the very warp and woof of our entire society. It is akin to the Chinese Cultural Revolution. An intellectual pox takes over the populace, does its damage (although happily, much less so here than there, at least so far), and then, hopefully, goes back from whence it came; hell, presumably. The first step in eradicating this attack on civilization is to at least be award of the degree of this malignity.

Consider several instances which are pervasive even amongst conservatives. They are amongst the least influenced by this pernicious doctrine, but even they have succumbed to some degree. For example, the opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal, no pinko operation, they, continually use the ill begotten phrase, “Ms.” (This eviscerates the distinction between the married and unmarried state for women, and thus tends in the direction of undermining that precious institution).

Exhibit “A,” the new kid on the block, constitutes spelling “black” with capital letters (e.g., “Black), when the word applies to people, while refusing to do so for whites. It refers to them in the lower-case format. Why oh why would any sensible person do that? Don’t men (I use this word advisedly) of good will wish to demonstrate commonalities, not divergences between the two races? And, yet, it is the rare periodical that refuses to engage in this deleterious capital letter practice.

Why is this harmful, even from the perspective of the “progressives?” (They are not progressive; they are regressive!) One of their main motifs is equality, equity, egalitarianism. They complain, often by far from always justifiably, that white and black people are treated unequally, the latter invidiously. They all too often get the short end of the stick. But in this case, that is exactly what they are supporting: treating the two races differently for no rational reason. Had this practice been started by whites, or conservatives, there would have been complaints to the high heavens that this constituted racism.

A Capital Offense

Posted by M. C. on June 12, 2023

Whenever I see the word black capitalized in academic books that praise a black person or persons, I think of Doctor Johnson’s remark about women preachers: They are like a dog walking on hind legs. It is not well done, but one is surprised to find it done at all. There is an underlying, subconscious (but perhaps not entirely unconscious) quality of despite-ness about the praise in academic books. Despite being black, he or she did or achieved this or that… In other words, one wouldn’t really have expected it.

Theodore Dalrymple

Theodore Dalrymple

Last week I reviewed a book published by an American academic press—it hardly matters the title or author, for in the respect to which I wish to draw your attention they are almost all the same these days. With few exceptions, they capitalize the word black when it refers to a person, while keeping white (or brown) in the lower case.

This is no doubt a fashion, but it does not seem a purely spontaneous one. If there is no central enforcement, there might as well be one. The presses have been invaded by the termites of wokeness so thoroughly that there is no need of central direction.

It is unlikely in any case that the authors put up much of a fight, if any, against the imposition; most of them probably don’t even see it as an imposition. I suspect, however, that any author who did want to resist the fashion would soon be faced by a stiff fight, which he would probably lose. His desire to be published would overcome his scruples on a matter of principle.

To me, however, the fashion has all the hallmarks of a profound but unacknowledged racism. It is as if those who insist upon this usage—the monstrous regiment of subeditors—are determined to prove just how sympathetic they are to black people, past, present, and to come. As Queen Gertrude would have put it, methinks the subeditors do protest too much.

It reveals that the subeditors of the presses, and possibly many of the authors, do not believe that blacks are just another group of human beings like any other group, but special: special in their need to be condescended to, or special in their inability to make their own way, and therefore in need of special protection, like giant pandas or the Tasmanian devil. In other words, there is a subconscious, but not very deeply subconscious, belief in their inferiority, for which nothing but such protection by, and condescension of, good, kind, and generous people (and bureaucracies) can compensate.

Now the history of group ascension in the United States (and elsewhere) suggests that the groups are capable of improving their lot, if rising in the social scale counts as improvement. Nations, too, can rise (and fall) in the pecking order, not by the benevolent aid of others, and even in the face of hostility.

It is true, of course, that blacks in America have faced many generations of ill treatment, but such prejudice as now exists against them is not legal but the kind of informal social prejudice that is common throughout history. They also benefit from prejudice in their favor, which may in the long run be more harmful to them than prejudice against.

Surely no one, whatever he thinks of the situation of blacks in America today, can seriously suppose that the capitalization of the word black to categorize them will improve their situation in any tangible, or even intangible, way. (My view is that, if it has any effect at all, it will have the reverse effect, by constantly drawing attention to their different moral or intellectual status from whites.)

Are you ready for this week’s absurdity? Here’s our Friday roll-up of the most ridiculous stories from around the world that are threats to your liberty, your finances, and your prosperity.

College newspaper will no longer report “triggering” news

Northwestern is one of the finest universities in the world and is particularly renowned for its journalism school.

The Daily Northwestern student paper, staffed by these aspiring journalists, recently apologized for covering a “traumatic” event on campus.

The traumatic event in question was a speech by former Trump official Jeff Sessions.

Unsurprisingly, some students protested the ex-Attorney General’s speech, and the newspaper covered the protest. But the paper said they inadvertently “retraumatized” these protesters in reporting the story.

Past generations were traumatized by fighting in the Vietnam War, or having police dogs sicced on them while marching for equal rights.

All it takes for these snowflakes is to be traumatized is a newspaper article about a man who has differing political opinions.

So the paper apologized and published an editorial promising that if a news event could be ‘triggering’ to the snowflakes, it just won’t be reported.

Once again– this is supposed to be one of the finest journalism schools in the world.

University professor hates rural Americans

Sometimes Twitter reveals the true beliefs of the Bolshevik intelligentsia.

Like this tweet from a University of California at Berkeley instructor who teaches philosophy:

“I unironically embrace the bashing of rural Americans. They, as a group, are bad people who have made bad life decisions… this nostalgia for some imagined pastoral way of life is stupid and we should shame people who aren’t pro-city.

The University of California at Berkeley is legendary for stifling any views that don’t conform to the Bolshevik agenda as “hate speech”. But it’s apparently fine with denigrating broad swaths of Americans as “bad people” who should be shamed for not living in a city.

(I wonder how many mid-westerners were “traumatized” by the tweet.)

British academic union says you can now ‘identify’ as black and disabled

Remember Rachel Dolezal, the white women who pretended to be black and became an NAACP official?

Turns out she was just ahead of her time.

Now the Universities and Colleges Union in Great Britain is seriously arguing that people should be able to identify as any race they want.

The union for professors and other academics put out its official stance in a recent report which said:

“Our rules commit us to ending all forms of discrimination, bigotry and stereotyping. UCU has a long history of enabling members to self-identify whether that is being black, disabled, LGBT+ or women.”

Disabled? Seriously? I guess the competition for the best parking spots is really going to start heating up.

And just to be crystal clear about the union’s views, a spokesman confirmed that, yes, members can choose to identify and be recognized as black. Or disabled. Or whatever else.

Cop tackles quadruple amputee teen, arrests friend for filming

Teenagers are known for mood swings and temper tantrums.

Now imagine being a 15 year old boy, a quadruple amputee, who has been abandoned by his parents, and forced to live in a group home.

I’d imagine you’d have a bad day from time to time.

And during one of the teenager’s bad days, staff at the group home called police over to the house.

You already know where this is going: the cop reacted aggressively… and it was all caught on video.

The footage shows the officer screaming at, tackling, and finally arresting the boy.

It’s unclear exactly what the officer was afraid would happen if the teen wasn’t restrained, because, reminder, he has no arms and legs. It’s not like the kid was going to reach for a weapon or run away.

Another boy at the group home filmed the incident, and hands the phone off to another teen when the officer approaches him.

Despite his compliance, the teen’s head is seen being slammed into the wall by the officer, before he is also arrested.

US government bans sleeping at the office

Apparently there’s a problem with US government employees sleeping on the job… and the problem is so bad that Uncle Sam felt the need to explicitly ban taking naps at the office.

If any US government employee wants to sleep in a federal building, for any amount of time, they now have to get permission from an agency official.
