China Isn’t an Enemy and Hawks Shouldn’t Turn It Into One | The American Conservative

…The State Department’s director of policy planning, Kiron Skinner, noted, “It’s the first time that we will have a great power competitor that is not Caucasian.” That’s not strictly correct, given Japan’s aggressive advance a few decades ago. But for some, the PRC still fits the historic stereotype of the “Yellow Peril,” which makes China seem more credible as a global menace.

The Pentagon report describes the alleged threat in great detail. Ironically, Beijing’s behavior sounds a lot like that of America once the latter broke free of British control.

Chinese leaders, asserts the Pentagon, “are focused on realizing a powerful and prosperous China that is equipped with a ‘world-class’ military, securing China’s status as a great power with the aim of emerging as the preeminent power in the Indo-Pacific region.” The People’s Liberation Army is expected to be “able to fight and win wars, deter potential adversaries, and secure Chinese national interests overseas, including a growing emphasis on the importance of the maritime and information domains, offensive air operations, long-distance mobility operations, and space and cyber operations.”

But the military is not Beijing’s only weapon. “China conducts influence operations against media, cultural business academic, and policy communities of the United States, other countries, and international institutions to achieve outcomes favorable to its security and military strategy objectives,” says the Pentagon. The goal is to convince others “to accept China’s narrative surrounding its priorities.”

Washington became dominant in its own region by dismembering Mexico, seizing half of that nation’s territory. Threats of military action also led to a favorable settlement along America’s northern border. Overwhelming U.S. power enabled the seizure of Cuba in 1898 and routine interventions in Latin America during the early 20th century. American economic and cultural influence grew apace. Washington gained global ascendency after World War II and since then has robustly promoted its “narrative surrounding its priorities.

Another Chinese replay of American history can be seen in its challenge to the global leader. Warns the Pentagon, Beijing is seeking “to degrade core U.S. operational and technological advantages.” America once enjoyed both rising population and productivity, moving it ahead of the then-dominant United Kingdom. Its world-class armed forces were forged in World War I and especially World War II, after which it achieved qualitative military superiority. America has held onto this advantage ever since, though at significant cost.

Not surprisingly, China’s advances are discomfiting to Washington. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday’s Country: Not To Worry, They Can’t Innovate – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on April 19, 2019

China sends its brightest to the world’s best technical school while America makes its universities into playpens for the mildly retarded. The country crumbles but spends drunkenly of defective fighter planes it doesn’t need in the first place.

For many years the United States has regarded itself as, and been, the world’s technological leader. One can easily make a long and impressive list of seminal discoveries and inventions coming from America, from the moon landings to the internet. It was an astonishing performance. The US maintains a lead, though usually a shrinking one, in many fields. But: Read the rest of this entry »

Hypersonics Are Speeding up Great Power Competition | The National Interest

Posted by M. C. on March 8, 2019

Hypersonics, Chinese “Carrier Killer” cruise missiles.

US response: Build more carriers. No doubt the pentagram will be shocked when one or two of these go to the bottom. But hey, you have to break a few eggs to build an empire.

Almost every day now, the New York Times comes out with a new front page article about China. The Middle Kingdom is simultaneously plundering the developing world, oppressing internal minorities, and hacking American companies. The Chinese economy is said to be in dire straits due to vast mismanagement , and the country is generally portrayed as on the brink of total meltdown. The editorial staff is fascinated by China’s shortcomings and appears to be intent on stoking the “New Cold War” by painting Beijing as the capital of the new “Evil Empire.” Such a torrent of reproach may have the impact of making the American public burn red hot with Sino-phobic zeal or alternatively causing its readership to chortle derisively at China’s pathetic plight. Yet the paper “of record” is remarkably oblivious to the actual nature of the shifting military balance in the Asia-Pacific.

Is it not highly irresponsible of journalists to promote grave tensions between Washington and Beijing without any knowledge of the ghastly consequences that might well flow from those frictions? Any student of U.S. history knows that the scourge of “yellow journalism” played a major role in setting off the Spanish-American War just over a century ago (giving America possession of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, Hawaii and Cuba in the rather unseemly process). The consequences of a war between China and America would, after all, look nothing like Washington’s long-forgotten adventure with Madrid, and might instead mark the end of life on Earth. Keeping that stark fact in mind, one wonders why the New York Times has never bothered to look into China’s rapid development of hypersonic weaponry. Read the rest of this entry »

Top Commander: China ‘Eroding’ U.S. Military Advantage in Asia

Posted by M. C. on February 13, 2019

I hope the Chinese don’t hear about those Middle East friends Saudis that kicked our butt using cell phones and VCRs.

How dare those Chinese rebel at the US Navy scouring the China Sea!

The problem here is government believes it’s own propaganda and writes checks it can’t pay.

https://www.breitbart.com/national-security/2019/02/12/top-commander-china-eroding-u-s-military-advantage-asia/

Adm. Philip Davidson’s warnings came as part of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s (INDOPACOM) annual posture statement — a comprehensive report on the combatant command’s role, missions, accomplishments, plans, and programs — presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday in the form of written testimony.

Davidson, the commander of INDOPACOM, provided a summary of the combatant command’s 2019 posture statement during his opening remarks, telling lawmakers:

We need urgent change at significant scale to address the challenges, strategic competition with China. Our military advantage and deterrent edge in the Indo-Pacific is eroding. The Chinese Communist Party leadership in Beijing senses weaknesses. They are testing our resolve, and if we do not act urgently, they may soon conclude that they can achieve their goals through force. We can’t take these for granted….

Google Employees Rebel Against Project Dragonfly – The Organic Prepper

Posted by M. C. on December 13, 2018

Firefox, Brave, Vivaldi, DuckDuckGo, Startpage – The choice is yours.

By Meadow Clark

More than 1,400 Google staff, many journalists, and human rights organizations are calling on Google to halt its controversial project called Dragonfly.

What is Project Dragonfly?

Dragonfly is a search engine specially built for China. It would unleash more censorship on a mass scale by selectively blocking certain search terms, apparently at the behest of China’s government. Human rights groups are blasting the company for aiding and abetting China’s mass surveillance and rights violations which could result in potential imprisonment.

It turns out Google’s employees had been unwittingly working on this project for a while until 2017 without knowing its intended purpose. News of this highly secret program finally leaked and no one is letting it get swept under the rug.

Thankfully, since the news leaked out, no amount of time has caused advocates and free speech lovers to forget this scandal. Those in the know are using the hashtag #DropDragonfly.

Joe Westby@JoeWestby

Sundar Pichai seems to be keen on protecting Google users privacy. So why does he want to give user data to Chinese authorities to help them arrest or imprison people?

36 people are talking about this

How would the Dragonfly search engine in China Work?

The search engine would censure terms like “human rights” and “religion.” Hundreds of Google employees have called this out as obvious freedom of speech violations.

BBC reported in August:

The search app would “blacklist sensitive queries”, The Intercept says, identifying and filtering websites currently blocked by China’s so-called Great Firewall.

According to documents it had seen, a search via the app would result in a list with banned websites removed and a disclaimer saying that “some results may have been removed due to statutory requirements”.

It said the BBC News website and Wikipedia would be among those blocked.

Employees of Google are horrified.

“We are Google employees and we join Amnesty International in calling on Google to cancel project Dragonfly…”

Common Dreams reported that an open letter was drawn up…

Marc Faber: These Trade Wars are Going to be Very Negative for Everyone

Posted by M. C. on May 3, 2018

https://marcfabersblog.blogspot.com/

…Concerning global trade, you are right. The idea was that multinationals in Europe and especially in the US could open up new markets like China and then sell their goods into these markets. But conditions have somewhat changed in the sense that it is the Chinese and other emerging economies that sold their goods into the US.

So to some extent, it backfired on the US and as you know the US is not the fair player and they reacted negatively. These trade sanctions or trade barriers, in my view are not very negative for China and other countries. Rather they are very negative for the US. This is my assessment of the situation.

Russia, China eclipse US in hypersonic missiles, prompting fears

Posted by M. C. on March 27, 2018

We spend more than the next ten highest foreign defense budgets put together. That includes Russia and China.

The standard government solution is spend even more.

If we are behind in defense capability it is not the fault of the “austere” budget. We spend too much getting pounded by countries barely out of the stone age and building floating dinosaurs susceptible to China’s carrier killer cruise missiles.

BY REBECCA KHEEL

Russia and China are outpacing the United States in the development of super-fast missile technology, Pentagon officials and key lawmakers are warning.

Russia says it successfully tested a so-called hypersonic missile this month, while China tested a similar system last year expected to enter service soon.

“Right now, we’re helpless,” Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in advocating for more investment in hypersonics, along with missile defense.

Hypersonics are generally defined as missiles that can fly more than five times the speed of sound…

Fix Bayonets! – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on February 24, 2018

So you don’t understand war…oops defense policy-Follow the money.

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2018/02/eric-margolis/fix-bayonets-lets-attack-china-and-russia/

Which brings us back to General ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis. He is quite right that so-called terrorists (that’s anyone who actively opposes the Lex Americana) pose no real life or death threat to the US mainland.

But if so, how then to maintain the $1 trillion US military budget? Well, of course, trot out those good old ‘Reds Under Our Beds.’ Actually, the Pentagon has been planning a new war with China for the past three years, a mainly air and naval conflict to dominate China’s coasts and seas. The Pentagon is loading up on new aircraft, missiles, satellites and naval craft for the next Pacific War, and trying to enlist India as an ally against China.

A Multi-Polar Cooperative World – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on February 14, 2018

The only alternative is a multi-polar world with enough cooperation and mutual respect of the rival countries that they live and let live.

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2018/02/michael-s-rozeff/multi-polar-cooperative-world-is-the-only-option/

By

Because the three major rivals in the world, Russia, China, and the United States, each have nuclear weapons and systems to wipe each other out and make the world uninhabitable, there is only one option that spells the survival of mankind along with its current state of knowledge. No one of these three countries and no alliance of lesser powers can take over the world and form a world government because the others will resist. If one of these attempts to rule the world, the likelihood of nuclear war rises dramatically. Read the rest of this entry »

Trump’s Tariffs are Statism On the March – Jonah Goldberg

Posted by M. C. on January 27, 2018

Exceptional article, especially for a neocon.

Carmakers get tariffs put on cheaper imports then raise their price to just below the tariffed price.

The privileged few make out. You take it on the chin.

https://townhall.com/columnists/jonahgoldberg/2018/01/26/trumps-tariffs-are-statism-on-the-march-n2439835

…Sometimes the government protects certain industries in order to goose employment or in the name of keeping prices low for the people or prices high for the producers (i.e. farmers, favored industries, etc.). But such subsidies not only stifle innovation, they also end up hurting consumers or taxpayers or both.
