At a  minimum, a government is a system of control over members of a political body—Max Weber defined it as “the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory”—and that includes the power to levy and collect taxes and raise and maintain an army. You will notice the centrality of “control,” and its ancillary “power.”  That alone should make any serious person start to think maybe something’s wrong.

Last year the fiftieth anniversary edition of my old SDS book was published, the classic history of the central organization and essential creative center of the New Left in the 1960’s..  I contributed a preface in which I pointed out that the kind of “warmed-over Marxist-Gramscianism that purported to be the Left” for most of the decades after that time was the form of “dried-out socialism and authoritarian government that SDS in its serious years would have rejected out of hand.”  There was nowhere “any champion of participatory democracy and community empowerment so important to SDS and its allies, nowhere the rejection of authoritarian institutions and government complicity” that marked the New Left.

I go back to that era now because what the Left has become over these years, particularly with its adoption of feministic values and woke racialism, is a threat to become a quite dangerous power in this country since one of its followers has a good chance to become President this fall, and to govern under the direction of Barak Obama and Bernie Sanders and their ilk in the effort to put all the basic functions of the society under government control.

A few years ago I wrote a book about society without government, in which I began by saying that finding out about what’s bad about it is inherent in its definition, if you just think about it. Are You in an Anti-Free Speech State? We Now Have The Definitive List

For years, we have discussed the alarming shift in the Democratic party on free speech with candidates running on pledges to censor opposing views and politicians supporting blacklisting and censorship on social media. Many citizens oppose such efforts to restrict their rights under the First Amendment, but are unaware of the work of their representatives to limit free speech. Now, a filing in the Supreme Court supporting censorship efforts by the Biden Administration has supplied a handy list of the anti-free speech states for citizens.

The 5th Circuit previously ruled in Missouri v. Biden that administration officials “likely violated” the First Amendment and issued a preliminary injunction banning the government from communicating with social media companies to limit speech.

Not surprisingly, the state of California is leading the effort to get the Supreme Court to reverse a decision enjoining the government from censorship efforts. California has long sought to impose speech limits on doctors, businesses, and citizens to silence opposing viewpoints.

However,  23 Democrat-led states joined this ignoble effort in signing on to the brief of California Attorney General Rob Bonta.  The brief lauds past efforts of these states to combat “harmful content” on the Internet and to protect the public from “misleading information” through partnerships with social media companies.

So here is the list to see if you are residing in an anti-free speech state:

The Jewish American Dilemma

The Democratic Party has decided it’s okay to use the law in bad faith to persecute and jail its political opponents. The Democratic Party has destroyed Americans’ faith in the federal courts, the Department of Justice, and the FBI. The Democratic Party allows an invasion of millions of unvetted aliens across the border, quite a few of them possibly bent on making mayhem here as global tensions careen into hot war.

      If they really want to repair the world, it’s time for Jewish Americans to get out of the Democratic Party and re-assimilate into an American common culture — a consensus about reality — that is consistent with running a successful, orderly, and just society.

      At this moment, when there is an awful struggle over the Hebrews’ place in the world — so dire that you’re waiting for World War Three to vaporize everything you’ve ever cared about — one observes the Jewish American scene with trepidation. Since I am a Jewish American, I’m just going to flop this one on the table like so much meat to see what kind of animals it brings out of the woodwork to fight over it.

     The Hamas war has exposed a deep current of animosity against Israel and against Jews generally world-wide, even here. This, you understand, is happening at a time of what we might call epic global political mental illness. A mass formation psychosis appears to grip many population groups, each in its own way, but often expressing itself as a longing for death, ranging from the economic suicide of Western Europe to the rise of Jihad to the desolate nihilism of American nose-ring youth.

     Jewish Americans have played a leading role in American intellectual and political life through the 20th century and into this one. We Jews increasingly dominated the arenas of literature, academia, medicine, law, news media, and show biz. Business and government, too. In America, we mostly overcame (or seemed to) the deep, old-world superstitions against us, thanks to successful near-total cultural assimilation. I, for example, came from a Jewish family far more interested in baseball than Talmud, who put up a Christmas tree in the living room, and ate sweet-and-sour pork frequently. Perhaps this made us “bad” Jews, but frankly, it was more important to be good Americans — that is, people who cared more about our country than our ancestral origins.

     American Jews have also been major players in the political Left through the past hundred-odd years, and especially within the Democratic Party. Lately, it appears that the Democratic Party is bent on destroying the country, so one is naturally left to wonder how this happened and what is the role of American Jews in this. I will offer a hypothesis.

     Old World Jews, scattered in diaspora among alien nations, were united for centuries by the longing to return to Jerusalem, the ancestral homeland. “Next year in Jerusalem!” is the toast that concludes each Passover seder. The modern activist manifestation of that, starting in 19th century Europe, was Zionism, the political movement to reinhabit the Bible land of the Middle East. The label Zionism has recently been confabulated with a notion that it stands for Jews wielding a disdainful sense of superiority against non-Jews.

     This is, of course, a false understanding. Mostly, it is an envious projection because Jews succeeded so well in America, and they succeeded, as I averred above, largely because they assimilated so completely. How else can you explain a Jew such as Samuel Goldwyn (born Szmuel Gelbfisz, later Samuel Goldfish) of Gloversville, New York, rising to run Hollywood’s MGM studio and turning out movies like Gone with the Wind that showed the rest of the nation what America was about? Or Irving Berlin who wrote God Bless America?

      For the Jews who arrived here in the late 19th and early 20th century, America became even more of a promised land than that sliver of Biblical real estate on the Mediterranean. They succeeded here beyond their wildest dreams. Why dream idly about returning to the Middle East when the USA turned out to be the real Land of Milk and Honey?  Hence, a revision in American Judaism became necessary. Next year in Jerusalem was replaced as a central animating principle by an alternate shibboleth: tikkun olam.

CNN Host: We Should Yield to Government Censorship Demands

Now, however, major media figures are shrugging off free speech concerns and supporting censorship as what former CNN media host CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter called a “harm reduction model.” While once fiercely opposed to censorship and government-supported blacklists, many in the media are echoing Mattingly’s view that the natural default should be to obey the government and its directions on permitted speech. After all, this is all for our own protection. Censorship just “makes sense.”

As a long-standing free speech advocate, the last few years have been alarming and, frankly, depressing. The censorship efforts of the government are, unfortunately, not new.  However, what is new is the support of the media and the Democratic Party in such censorship. That was on display on various channels after the recent opinion finding that the Biden Administration had violated the First Amendment in “the most massive attack against free speech in United States history.” However, the New York Times immediately warned that the outbreak of free speech could “curtail efforts to combat disinformation.” Yet, no one expressed more simply and chillingly than CNN Chief White House Correspondent Phil Mattingly who stated that it “makes sense” for tech companies to go along with government censorship demands.

Mattingly admitted that social media platforms “more often than not” gave in to the censorship demands by the Biden administration. However, he insisted that it “makes sense,” and is “probably what we should do on public health grounds.”

“[T]he Biden administration would regularly reach out to Twitter and Facebook and other companies in kind of the early stages of their COVID response and say, this person is spreading lies about vaccines, this account is spreading misinformation that is inhibiting — not just our efforts, the administration’s efforts to address COVID — but also public health, do something about it. And often, I think more often than not, the companies would respond and say, okay. And there are emails that came out during the course of this case that that was something that I think — when it was explained to me at the time, I thought, alright, that makes sense, that’s probably what we should do on public health grounds.”

What is striking is not just the blind acceptance that the government should be protecting us from harmful thoughts. It is also the failure to recognize that the government was wrong on many of these points while experts were being banned and blacklisted.

Many people were routinely censored on Twitter and other platforms for daring to challenge the official position on masks.

The Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) initially rejected the use of a mask mandate. However, the issue became a political weapon as politicians and the press claimed that questioning masks was anti-science and even unhinged. In April 2020, the CDC reversed its position and called for the masking of the entire population, including children as young as 2 years old.  The mask mandate and other pandemic measures like the closing of schools are now cited as fueling emotional and developmental problems in children.

I’m sure most of you remember the liberal protests against George Bush’s invasion of Iraq.

They were big, they were loud, they were sometimes rude. And I can’t vouch for all of their hairstyle choices.

But they were right.

The invasion of Iraq was a criminal enterprise, an unconstitutional war built on lies that decimated a country, killed thousands of American soldiers and upwards of a million Iraqis.

Our nation is still involved in endless wars, not just in Iraq but also Syria, Yemen, and possibly a nuclear showdown with Russia.

Since Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February, our government has funneled more than $65 billion dollars to the corrupt regime in Kiev and our domestic military-industrial complex.

But where are the liberal protestors?

Even during the Iraq War, when the neocons were at the peak of their power in the Republican Party, there were a handful of conservative dissenters like Jimmy Duncan of Tennessee and the great Ron Paul of Texas.

But now, on Capitol Hill it’s been exclusively Republicans standing up against the War Party: Thomas Massie, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, Matt Gaetz, etc.

Socialist Bernie Sanders has supported the war.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has stopped scrolling Instagram long enough to support the war.

Ro Khanna, who for years spoke sense on Russian-American relations, has supported the war.

Cori Bush, a signatory to our War Powers Pledge, has supported the war.

There are exceptions—media figures like Jimmy Dore, activist allies like Matthew Hoh, and our progressive Defend the Guard bill sponsors at the state level have all opposed this march to war in Eastern Europe.

But nationally, no Democrat has been willing to stand up to the War Party.

Until last week…when we saw the most embarrassing muzzling I’ve ever witnessed in American politics.

Last Monday, thirty members of the House Progressive Caucus issued a public letter requesting that the Biden administration—in addition to continuing funding of the war—pair that foreign aid for Ukraine with negotiations with Russia.

This milquetoast plea for diplomacy was met with universal hostility by the liberal mainstream media, the Democratic leadership, and the think tankers and Twitter personalities on foreign payrolls.

In less than 24 hours the letter was withdrawn.

American liberals are obsessed with finding ways to silence and censor their adversaries. Every week, if not every day, they have new targets they want de-platformed, banned, silenced, and otherwise prevented from speaking or being heard (by “liberals,” I mean the term of self-description used by the dominant wing of the Democratic Party).

For years, their preferred censorship tactic was to expand and distort the concept of “hate speech” to mean “views that make us uncomfortable,” and then demand that such “hateful” views be prohibited on that basis. For that reason, it is now common to hear Democrats assert, falsely, that the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech does not protect “hate speech.” Their political culture has long inculcated them to believe that they can comfortably silence whatever views they arbitrarily place into this category without being guilty of censorship.

Constitutional illiteracy to the side, the “hate speech” framework for justifying censorship is now insufficient because liberals are eager to silence a much broader range of voices than those they can credibly accuse of being hateful. That is why the newest, and now most popular, censorship framework is to claim that their targets are guilty of spreading “misinformation” or “disinformation.” These terms, by design, have no clear or concise meaning. Like the term “terrorism,” it is their elasticity that makes them so useful.

When liberals’ favorite media outlets, from CNN and NBC to The New York Times and The Atlantic, spend four years disseminating one fabricated Russia story after the next — from the Kremlin hacking into Vermont’s heating system and Putin’s sexual blackmail over Trump to bounties on the heads of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, the Biden email archive being “Russian disinformation,” and a magical mystery weapon that injures American brains with cricket noises — none of that is “disinformation” that requires banishment. Nor are false claims that COVID’s origin has proven to be zoonotic rather than a lab leak, the vastly overstated claim that vaccines prevent transmission of COVID, or that Julian Assange stole classified documents and caused people to die. Corporate outlets beloved by liberals are free to spout serious falsehoods without being deemed guilty of disinformation, and, because of that, do so routinely.

This “disinformation” term is reserved for those who question liberal pieties, not for those devoted to affirming them. That is the real functional definition of “disinformation” and of its little cousin, “misinformation.” It is not possible to disagree with liberals or see the world differently than they see it. The only two choices are unthinking submission to their dogma or acting as an agent of “disinformation.” Dissent does not exist to them; any deviation from their worldview is inherently dangerous — to the point that it cannot be heard.

The data proving a deeply radical authoritarian strain in Trump-era Democratic Party politics is ample and have been extensively reported here. Democrats overwhelmingly trust and love the FBI and CIA. Polls show they overwhelmingly favor censorship of the internet not only by Big Tech oligarchs but also by the state. Leading Democratic Party politicians have repeatedly subpoenaed social media executives and explicitly threatened them with legal and regulatory reprisals if they do not censor more aggressively — a likely violation of the First Amendment given decades of case law ruling that state officials are barred from coercing private actors to censor for them, in ways the Constitution prohibits them from doing directly.

Democratic officials have used the pretexts of COVID, “the insurrection,” and Russia to justify their censorship demands.

‘Canceling women’? Democrats draw online flak after $3.5trn spending bill uses non-gendered terms for mothers and women — RT USA News

The Democratic Party has been accused of trying to “erase women” after it emerged that its $3.5 trillion infrastructure spending bill uses the terms “birthing,” “lactating” and “pregnant” persons alongside “women” and “mother.”

In all, the spending package – one part of the Biden administration’s ‘Build Back Better’ program – uses the word “mother” three times and the word “maternal” 50 times. Meanwhile, the word “women” appears on 20 occasions in a number of contexts, including domestic violence, business ownership, health insurance and maternity-related concerns.

However, it also mentions the phrase “pregnant, lactating, and postpartum individuals” in 11 instances when focusing on maternal health conditions and concerns – with the individual descriptor terms making more appearances throughout the 2,465-page document.

In addition, there also appears to be inconsistent usage of gender-specific and non-gendered language. For instance, the phrase is used as a whole some four times in Section 31045 of the bill, which deals with “funding for maternal mental health equity grant programs.”

The Democrats’ use of ‘inclusive language’ marks a departure from the party’s recent Women’s Health Protection Act, which was passed by the House of Representatives last week. The legislation does not include gender-neutral references, and instead uses the terms “woman” and “women” once and 15 times respectively when discussing reproductive issues, pregnancy and abortion.

But it does note that the terms ‘woman’ and ‘women’ were used to “reflect the identity of the majority of people targeted and affected by restrictions on abortion services.” Besides stating that access to abortion services was “critical to the health of every person capable of becoming pregnant,” the act was “intended to protect all people with the capacity for pregnancy – cisgender women, transgender men, non-binary individuals, those who identify with a different gender, and others.”

A similar situation played out in June with the Biden administration’s budget proposal for 2022 drawing controversy over the use of the phrase “birthing people” instead of mothers in a portion that deals with maternal mortality rates.

The section begins by using the gender-specific terms “maternal” and “women of color” to note that the US has the “highest maternal mortality rate among developed nations” but then switches to the term “birthing people” when allocating over $200 million to tackle the issue. As well, that funding includes investments to “implement implicit bias training for healthcare providers.”

Democrat Groups Plan to ‘Fact Check’ Private SMS Messages

The prospect of the DNC and other government-affiliated groups having access to Americans’ private text messages represents a chilling surveillance dystopia.

Groups allied with the Biden administration are planning on working directly with cellphone network providers to ‘fact check’ private SMS messages if they contain “misinformation about vaccines.”

The revelation is made in a Politico article which explains how the White House is preparing to characterize “conservative opponents of its Covid-19 vaccine campaign as dangerous and extreme.”

The decision to ramp up the information war against vaccine skeptics was made after conservatives showed resistance to the Biden administration’s plan to go “door-to-door” to increase vaccination rates.

“Biden allied groups, including the Democratic National Committee, are also planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages,” states the report.

“The goal is to ensure that people who may have difficulty getting a vaccination because of issues like transportation see those barriers lessened or removed entirely.”

Recall that ‘fact-checkers’ infamously declared the Wuhan lab leak hypothesis to be a “debunked conspiracy theory” at the start of the pandemic, only to be forced into a humiliating reversal later on.

In doing so, they may have helped facilitate one of the biggest cover-ups in modern history, so what business such groups have in snooping on people’s private SMS messages is anyone’s guess.

A disturbing behavior is starting to reappear on the political stage in recent years. It is not a crowd-pleaser for most onlookers. It is more like bad political theater that meshes cheap horror films with dark comedy and few people are laughing.

For some unearthly reason, Democratic Party politicians are now acting as if it is okay to fight racism with racism. Of course, that is an absurdity, a completely nonsensical farce. It is like trying to fight rape assaults with more rapes, or preventing murders by murdering more people. Nobody can fight the evils of racism with the ugliness of racism. But some in the Democratic Party leadership want to do exactly that. They have declared that it is perfectly acceptable to engage in blatant racist behavior, like spiteful Klansmen on their way to a cross burning. Like churlish bigots, these Democrats want to “even the score.” In their minds, imitating prejudicial conduct will somehow atone for past racial discrimination, which ironically was perpetrated against blacks, Catholic and Jews by mostly bygone Democratic Party firebrands.

 The most glaring example of this attempt to fight racism with racism is Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a longtime Democratic Party leader in Chicago. On May 19 of this year, she sent a letter to the Chicago media declaring that she would “exclusively” provide “one-on-one interviews with journalists of color.” She refused to accept personal interviews with reporters who had the wrong skin color. Much of the news media looked the other way, some congratulating her for highlighting the lack of diversity in newsrooms.

To hide her virulent racism, Mayor Lightfoot unleashed the specter of racism to promote so-called “equity,” a word often thrown under the bus to protect the foolish and the power hungry. But there is more. She acted as if wanted to inflict revenge. She wanted an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth in her quest for “justice”. She apparently believes she can engage in outright bigotry because others did so in the past. In this way, she echoes the response of Democrat Governor George Wallace, who barred black-skinned children from entering public institutions of learning. Democrats cannot seem to get past their warped sense of justice. Incredibly, some media outlets actually agreed with Mayor Lightfoot’s racist rants.  They were eager to defend her racist policies, singing praise for her noble stand to fight racism, contending that too many news reporters were born with the wrong skin color.

But Mayor Lightfoot’s unprofessional action is not an isolated incident perpetrated by Democratic Party leaders. No, the list is almost endless. For instance, on March 23, 2021, Democratic Senators Duckworth and Hirono pledged to vote “no” for any Biden nominees unless they were of particular race. They refused to confirm any white nominees, engaging in the ugly trend of “anti-white racism.” Denying jobs to people who have the wrong skin color is not only racist, but violates Title VII of the1964 Civil Rights Act, which “prohibits employers from discriminating against employees and job applicants based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.” Due to public criticism, both Democrats eventually backed away from their racist demands. More and more Democrats now oppose the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The state of Vermont expanded vaccine eligibility to individuals 16 or older who identified as Black, Indigenous or a person of color. Vermont discriminated on the basis of race in distributing lifesaving vaccines that are mostly paid by public agencies. Again, whites were not eligible. Extremely racist!

In the 2021 President Biden’s Covid-19 pandemic stimulus package discriminated against certain races in getting financial aid. The Democrat-written law stipulated that only “socially disadvantaged farmers or ranchers” based on race, could get financial aid from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The stimulus limited funding to only six races and leaves out whites. Clearly a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The Democratic Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, confessed that he was one of the men who wore either blackface or KKK robes in a photograph from his 1984 medical schoolbook page. Despite the racist photo, Governor Northam refused to step down. Only true racists would refuse to atone for past indiscretions.  Northam was the little racist Democrat who could. Then again, Democrats have traditionally been the defenders of black slavery, segregation, Ku Klux Klan, racism, racial supremacy, violent insurrection, voter suppression, and lynching.

And to top this off, California Governor Gavin Newsome and Democratic Party legislators attempted to legalize racial discrimination in 2020. They placed a ballot initiative (Prop. 16) to allow California to legally discriminate on the “basis of race and sex.” They called it “affirmative action,” but it was actually a latent method to discriminate by race. It lost at the ballot box, but Democrats raised over $25 million in order to pass a blatantly racist measure.

Nonetheless, many on the progressive left are currently championing the spread of Democrats’ dubious “enlightened racism,” which often bolsters their anti-racist credentials. Others are playing along with this charade, hoping that nobody will notice how incredibly insensitiveit is to speak in fluent “Racese.” It is indeed a crazy world of epic portions. Once deemed the most tolerant people in the world, Americans are now lambasted for things that long-dead ancestors might have done. Who would have guessed that Democrats would be extolled as the rescuers of those minorities who suffered the most from the cruel whip of the Democrat party’s scourge?

With a talent for Orwellian doublespeak, Democrats are now eager to drag their racist skeletons out of the closet, dust off their Confederate patina, and assert that their rediscovered racism is actually good for diversity and equality. Apparently, the racist apple has not fallen far from the Confederate tree.
