Toilet Paper Rolls Are Getting Smaller. Blame the Fed. | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on July 30, 2021

“Over the years, Edgar Dworsky has documented the downsizing of everything from Doritos to baby shampoo to ranch dressing. ‘The downsizing tends to happen when manufacturers face some type of pricing pressure,’ he says. For example, if the price of gasoline or grain goes up,” Rosalsky explained.

What the NPR scribe misses is inflation’s breakdown of the division of labor. Average folk, not savvy Homo economicus types, have to pump their own gas, scan their own groceries, and, probably worst of all, manage their own retirement funds.

A term has been coined for product sellers who shrink their packages, and thus, the amount of product in those packages, keeping the package price the same: shrinkflation. Anyone with a bit of good sense or economics training knows this is another form of price inflation, caused by what used to be the dictionary meaning of inflation; an increase in the supply of money.

For example, while the average American behind continues to widen, toilet paper has narrowed. A friend’s mother busted out a ruler to confirm her theory. Last year John Hebbe of Fairfax, Virginia, provided photographic proof to the Washington Post: an old roll was 4.5 inches wide, a new roll, 3.75 inches. Of course the new rolls are fatter, for now, causing annoyance with home owners with toilet paper dispensers with the roller too close to the wall to accommodate the fatter rolls.

Greg Rosalsky wrote for NPR.org, “The original Charmin roll of toilet paper, [Edgar Dworsky, former Massachusetts assistant attorney general,] says, had 650 sheets. Now you have to pay extra for “Mega Rolls” and “Super Mega Rolls”—and even those have many fewer sheets than the original. To add insult to injury, Charmin recently shrank the size of their toilet sheets. Talk about a crappy deal.”

“Downsizing is really a sneaky price increase,” Dworsky told NPR. “Consumers tend to be price conscious. But they’re not net-weight conscious. They can tell instantly if they’re used to paying $2.99 for a carton of orange juice and that goes up to $3.19. But if the orange juice container goes from 64 ounces to 59 ounces, they’re probably not going to notice.”

Homo economicus is assumed to notice this trickery pokery in neoclassical economics theory. Oliver Kim wrote in The Crimson, “But here’s a confession: Homo economicus is at most a useful fiction—in economic jargon, a model. Human beings do not actually think like Scrooge McDuck, but, in approximation and in aggregate, we often behave like we do.”

Since the government has deemed its paper tickets and computer digits to be money, Murray Rothbard wrote, “then the government, as dominant money-supplier, becomes free to create money costlessly and at will. As a result, this ‘inflation’ of the money supply destroys the value of the dollar or pound, drives up prices, cripples economic calculation, and hobbles and seriously damages the workings of the market economy.” That would include the division of labor.

“As we’re seeing inflation picking up now, that’s why I think you’re going to see more items being downsized,” Dworksy told Rosalsky. “And maybe it’s going to be a double-whammy: We’re going to see some products going up in price at the same time that you’re actually getting less in the package.”

A Charmin spokeswoman, when confronted by reporters at WBUR about shrinking the size of their toilet sheet squares, pulled an explanation out of her you-know-what, suggesting it was the result of “innovations” allowing “consumers to, basically, wipe their butts more efficiently.”

Rosalsky, writing from NPR La La Land believes, “consumers will start to notice and voice concern and the power of consumer demand will force companies to listen and right-size their products.” Right-size? What’s the right size?

Don’t blame Charmin, as Ludwig von Mises explained. “[I]f the ruling party does not want to imperil its popularity by heavy taxation, it takes recourse to inflation.”

Consumers should complain to those working at the Eccles Building producing money, not to those in the private market producing toilet paper.  Author:

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: There is Plenty of Toilet Paper

Posted by M. C. on March 22, 2020

Those of us that are good at figuring out angles will keep our lifestyles but for those of you who aren’t aggressive entrepreneurs, the socialists are going to make your lives miserable.

https://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2020/03/there-is-plenty-of-toilet-paper.html

By Robert Wenzel

There are plenty of empty shelves in San Francisco. You can’t find any toilet paper or paper towels in any stores.

Some are blaming capitalism as if things would be different if Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro were in charge.

The real problem is that the San Francisco government along with many other US governments is acting too much in the anti-free market authoritarian manner of Maduro.

Here’s a recent message from the socialist San Francisco district attorney Chesa Boudin:

What a confused little man.

Maduro has price controls in effect and we all know how that is working out.

The current problem is one of distribution and incentives, both short-term and long-term.

In the recent past, most stores and consumers operated on pretty much “just in time” inventory when it came to toilet paper and paper towels.

This changed when the government started a panic over COVID-19. Some fearing a lockdown went to stores and grabbed as much toilet paper and paper towels as they could handle.

That left many more, well, shit out of luck, when it comes to toilet paper.

But the big problem is the anti-free market, anti-gouging rules.

People who have been selling toilet paper and paper towels for decades on a “just in time” inventory basis are not exactly, cutting edge, figure every angle entrepreneurs. They like steadiness and consistency.

I mean, they even understand this. The famous”don’t squeeze the Charmin” ads were built on the theme that grocers want steadiness and consistency—and certainly no one squeezing the Charmin.

If you want steadiness and consistency, you can have a nice life by being Mr. Whipple, but rarely are you going to become super-rich. That’s for the shrewd and aggressive.

When you have a supply line break, the Mr. Whipple’s of the world have no clue how to get aggressive about supply chains and pricing. They don’t want to, it is not in their blood.

What is needed is for the super aggressive to get working on the matter but they need to be motivated by money. A lot more money than the margin made by Mr. Whipple. You need the free market A Team working on this.

Government authoritarians like Boudin don’t get this. They consider free market, incentivized prices as “price gouging.” But when there has been a severe supply distortion for a commodity you want to buy, you really need sharp entrepreneurs to figure the angles and they are not going to do it for Mr. Whipple wages.

Consider my own situation. My just-in-time supply of toilet paper was running low. There is none, here in San Francisco, in supply at grocery stores or at any Walgreens or CVS stores.

So I had to think for a minute, then the solution came to me.

There are some restaurants that remain open in San Francisco but are operating on a “grab and go” basis. So my thought was, they must be packed with toilet paper that they aren’t using that they had in stock for in-restaurant dining. I will approach them and offer to buy some toilet paper.

The first two places I approached gave me a song and dance about why they couldn’t do it. There are just a lot of people who can’t think outside of routines.

Then I scored on my third try. I explained I wanted to buy some toilet paper. I told the owner, “I will pay good money.”

So the proprietor brought out a two-roll pack. The closet was close enough when he got the pack that I could see he had a full carton of toilet paper, 12 sets of 2 packs.

With the two roll pack in front of him, he said, “I am going to have to charge you $3.00.”

I replied, “I will buy the full carton for $60.” That’s $5.00 a pack, he was ecstatic.

As I walked home, I thought to myself, San Francisco is filled with toilet paper in gyms to skyscrapers that are not being used. I thought of the angles I could use to gain access to that toilet paper for around $5.00 a roll.

The city is filled with toilet paper.

I am pretty confident I could put a kid at a table on the sidewalk and sell them for $10.00 a roll, when you consider the alternative for prospective buyers. I think I could bank six figures every few days and take care of the asses of the masses.

But Boudin makes that impossible.

I have no incentive.

The masses will be wiping their asses with newspapers, at best, because Boudin thinks I would be gouging by hustling and figuring out the angles to free up the toilet paper that is out there that people want desperately.

Those of us that are good at figuring out angles will keep our lifestyles but for those of you who aren’t aggressive entrepreneurs, the socialists are going to make your lives miserable.

Dr Brownstein | Coronavirus IX: What to Avoid–Ibuprofen–And What to Take

Posted by M. C. on March 16, 2020

I have discussed what our CDC did in previous blog posts. They refused test kits from the WHO, developed their own faulty kits and refused private labs from testing sick individuals. The postmortem on this story will be ugly for the CDC. We are in a mess now with COVID-19 spreading across the country.

But, all is not lost. As I have detailed in other posts, there are many things you can do to improve your immune system and help you avoid COVID-19 problems:

Coronavirus IX: What to Avoid–Ibuprofen–And What to Take

Our misery continues! Today, I went to buy my mother toilet paper at 6am and the local grocery store shelves were emptied. Do not fear, as I found it later at a different store. Later today, mom tasked me with finding eggs. That took two different stores as well before I found them!  But, this is a time NOT to panic.  It is a time to pull together and support each other.   Many are recovering uneventfully–we just don’t hear about it.  I have seen numerous patients over the past month that may have had it.  I couldn’t test them because of a lack of kits, but they all recovered.  Of course some are very sick and dying.  Overall, I believe we will come through this with a death rate similar or slightly higher than the rate for the common flu. But, we will never know the true numbers because of a lack of test kits.  I do not think this crisis will persist into the summer months. As we begin to test more patients, we will see the mortality rate decline.  Of course, those are only my predictions, as we know that viruses can mutate.  This virus is very contagious but it is a flu-like illness for most who get it.  That must be kept in mind. And, eating a healthy diet and maintaining optimal hydration can help dramatically. More about that later.

We are in this mess due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If the CDC had done their job, COVID-19 would be contained and manageable. The Powers-That-Be at the CDC failed miserably compared to other countries. My recent blog post “Coronavirus VIII: Why Does S. Korea Have Lower Death Rate Compared to US?” was about the success in S. Korea at fighting COVID-19. Taiwan is another example for the US CDC to learn from. As of March 13, Taiwan has 50 COVID-19 cases and 1 death. (1) Keep in mind that Taiwan is 81 miles from mainland China and has 24 million citizens. A March 3, 2020 JAMA article detailed the rapid and complete response the Taiwanese health authorities implemented at the beginning of this crisis.

December 31, 2019 was the day Chinese officials notified the WHO that Chinese citizens were suffering unusually severe cases of pneumonia. That same day Taiwan began monitoring all passengers who arrived from Wuhan. A few days later, they started monitoring all people who had travelled to Wuhan since December 20. They increased their surveillance and testing and the rest is history; 50 cases and 1 death as of March 13, 2020.

– Eat a healthy diet FREE OF REFINED SUGAR! It should also be free of all refined food sources including salt, flour, and oils. Remember, refined sugar paralyzes the ability of white blood cells to perform their duties for hours.

– Make sure you always STAY WELL HYDRATED with clean water. Take your weight in pounds, divide the  number by 2 and the resultant number is the minimum amount of water in ounces to drink per day.

– NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS can help to improve the immune system’s ability to fight off an infection and to help it kill an active infection. I have over 25 years of practicing holistic medicine to back that statement up. I have seen it work. My partners have seen it work. My patients have seen it work.  We have used this approach successfully for many viral infections.  I have no doubt it will work for COVID-19 as well.

In my blog post “Coronavirus Part Vl: Why COVID-19 Is More Deadly to the Chinese” (3) I told you why COVID-19 was more deadly to younger Chinese males. Most Chinese men smoke cigarettes. Smoking increases ACE2 receptors in the lungs where COVID-19 has been shown to bind to. Similarly, ibuprofen has been shown to increase ACE 2 expression. (4) Ibuprofen should be avoided as it may enhance the infectious capabilities of COVID-19. Ibuprofen also causes problems for the kidneys and the GI tract. It is best to let the body utilize its innate abilities to fight an infection. One of the body’s main ways to do this is by mounting a fever. The increased body temperature is a way to mobilize the immune system into action as well as to enhance the killing effect of a foreign invader. Fevers can often be managed by tepid baths, lots of hydration and rest. It is important to maintain electrolyte balance with any infection but particularly when there is fever involved. Supplementing with unrefined salt is crucial here. It can be added to each glass of water. Again, it is best to work with a knowledgeable health care provider before doing any of the suggestions I have written about.

Acetaminophen should also be avoided for fevers.  It depletes a crucial antioxidant–glutathione.  In fact, acetaminophen should be severely limited for any condition.  It has a poor safety profile.

Dr. B’s antiviral protocol for his patients during acute illness or exposure to someone ill:

Vitamin A (NOT beta carotene)

– Adults: 100,000 IU/day for four days for adults (not pregnant or breast-feeding women)
– Children 25-50 pounds: 20,000 IU/day for four days
– Children 50-100 pounds: 50,000 IU/day for four days

Vitamin D3
– Adults: —50,000 IU/day for four days
– Children 25-50 pounds: 10,000 IU/day
– Children: 50-100 pounds: 25,000 IU/day

(Note: Both Vitamin A and D are fat-soluble vitamins. They can build up in the body. These doses are NOT meant to be taken for longer than four days at time. If you need to repeat the doses, seek advice from your physician.)

Vitamin C: 5-10,000 mg/day.  If you can take more, do it.  If you get loose stools, lower it.

Iodine: 25-100 mg/day and more if ill.  Kids can take lower doses.

-Children:  A useful number is to use 0.08mg/pound.

Don’t forget intravenous nutrient therapies are essential for helping the immune system in a time of crises.  A holistic doctor skilled in nutrient IV therapy can help guide you.  I have found IV hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and vitamin C wonderful treatments for my patients.  We would have a lot less death and misery from COVID-19 if these life-saving therapies were taught in medical schools and utilized in hospitals.

Final Thoughts:
This crises will pass. When it does, we need new leadership at CDC, FDA, and HHS. They have all failed us. You don’t have to wait for the Government to come to your rescue. You can take matters into your own hands. Find a holistic doctor who can help you achieve your optimal health. We are ready at the Center for Holistic Medicine to begin the journey with you.

To All Our Health,
~DrB

Dawn Neesom: ‘The human race is in grave danger of stupidity, not coronavirus’

Posted by M. C. on March 11, 2020

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.

Never have so many brain cells been sacrificed on the altar of toilet paper fever

By

Dawn Neesom Columnist

The human race is in grave danger. Thousands of people are showing severe symptoms already and there is no known cure.

No, not coronavirus, but sheer bloody stupidity.

Never have so many brain cells been sacrificed on the altar of toilet paper fever. Come on people, what is that about?

Why, when you’re warned you may get a (for most folk, mild) respiratory tract infection do you instantly think what you really need in your life is industrial supplies of bog roll?

On what planet does that even begin to make sense? (Okay, possibly Uranus). It’s not as if our sexy new version of flu gives you a runny nose. It’s mainly a dry cough and fever.

The only reason you may need that much Andrex is because you’ve stockpiled baked beans and tinned prunes too. Which is probably highly likely….
