Billionaire Explains Why US Sanctions Against Russia Have Backfired

Posted by M. C. on June 23, 2022

They are pushing countries away from American investments, according to Ray Dalio

“I can already tell you with certainty that the West is also suffering from the sanctions. Other countries are increasingly shedding US government bonds because they fear that they could end up like Russia. This is shifting the balance of power around the world,” the investor argued.

Washington’s sanctions against Moscow are forcing other countries to cut their investments in the US for fear of becoming the next target, billionaire hedge fund manager Ray Dalio has said in an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel.

When asked about anti-Russia sanctions, the founder of the world’s largest hedge fund Bridgewater Associates said the measures are failing, but there are no other options available to Washington.

Sanctions are the only weapon the US can use. So far, the decline in Russia’s gross domestic product has been around 15%. This is bearable for the population. Putin will only have trouble staying in power if the economy collapses more, say by up to 40%,” Dalio said.

He argued that while failing to achieve their direct goal of limiting Russia’s ability to fight in Ukraine, sanctions are also harming the US.

I can already tell you with certainty that the West is also suffering from the sanctions. Other countries are increasingly shedding US government bonds because they fear that they could end up like Russia. This is shifting the balance of power around the world,” the investor argued.

Dalio expects the Russia-Ukraine conflict to bring dramatic changes for the entire world.

The whole thing is reminiscent of the years 1938 and 1939, when the world was on the verge of World War II: two world powers are facing each other and are supported by different allies. How India behaves will be decisive. The country could stand by Russia’s economy if the West boycotts Moscow. In any case, the times of a globalized world with minimal trade barriers and free flow of capital are over,” he said.

Iran and Venezuela Praise Shared Success in Combating US Sanctions

Posted by M. C. on June 13, 2022

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ended his visit to Iran by holding high level talks with President Ebrahim Raisi and Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei on 11 June.

Both sides spoke about the successful experiences they have had in countering punitive economic sanctions imposed on them by the US.

Khamenei praised the Venezuelan people for their victory against hybrid war of Washington, saying: “Your resistance and that of the people of Venezuela is valuable because it enhances the value, status and merits of a nation and a country as well as its leaders.”

“Today, the US views Venezuela in a different [manner] compared to the past,” Khamenei added.

Earlier in the day, Raisi and Maduro signed a 20-year “cooperation road map,” focusing mainly on the areas of agriculture and food production.

“It is essential to consolidate the sovereignty and food security of our country,” Maduro said.

“I believe that between the two of us we will create an indestructible friendship for the future of our people and we will witness how our countries grow in the face of difficulties and how a new world is growing,” Maduro told the Iranian President.

In response, Raisi highlighted how Iran’s foreign policy “has always been to have relations with independent countries, and Venezuela has demonstrated incredible resistance against threats and sanctions by enemies and imperialism.”

“Sanctions and threats against the Iranian nation over the past 40 plus years have been numerous, but the Iranian nation has turned these sanctions into an opportunity for progress,” Raisi added.

The Unbearable Hypocrisy of US Sanctions on Iran – Antiwar.com Original

Posted by M. C. on January 28, 2020

The bottom line is this: the US Administration cites Iran’s restricting of outside
media as evidence of the evil nature of the Iranian government, all the while
scrambling to restrict American citizens’ access to Iranian media outlets.

Pot. Kettle. Black. Hypocrisy.

Sanctions: killing innocent civilians by design.

https://original.antiwar.com/daniel-mcadams/2020/01/27/the-unbearable-hypocrisy-of-us-sanctions-on-iran/

On November 22nd of last year, the US government announced it would impose sanctions on Iran’s information minister for his alleged role in limiting domestic Internet access while protests raged in that country over increases in gas prices.

At the time, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin condemned the Iranian government for censuring information that Iranian citizens could view online, stating that, “Iran’s leaders know that a free and open internet exposes their illegitimacy, so they seek to censor Internet access to quell anti-regime protests.”

The Iranians were evil, said the US government official in charge of economic sanctions, because it restricted what its citizens could read in the international press.

Our government would never do that…right?

Wrong. Yesterday, the US government knocked Iran’s state news agency, FARS, off of the Internet entirely, citing US sanctions against the country.

What that means is the Iranian news service is being censored by the United States government and that Americans will therefore no longer be able to see anything from this foreign media outlet.

Exactly what Mnuchin accused Iran of doing back in November.

Zerohedge writes, “as Iran’s PressTV describes further“:

The news agency said that it had received an email from the server company, which explicitly said that the blockage is due to an order by the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and its inclusion in the list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN).

The agency attached to its post a screenshot of its website with the message “www.farsnews.com’s server IP address could not be found.”

This latest US censorship of Iranian media is nothing new. Iran’s PressTV has been removed from YouTube and other US social media with “US sanctions on Iran” being given as the reason.

Americans are not allowed to see the Iranian perspective on the Middle East because the Beltway bombardiers and their bosses in the military-industrial complex depend on successfully demonizing all Persians so that Americans will accept their annihilation in another neocon war. If Americans are allowed to see the Iranian perspective they might not be so supportive of the slaughter the neocons are cooking up.

The bottom line is this: the US Administration cites Iran’s restricting of outside media as evidence of the evil nature of the Iranian government, all the while scrambling to restrict American citizens’ access to Iranian media outlets.

Pot. Kettle. Black. Hypocrisy.

US Sanctions Killing Innocent Iranians…Just ‘Collateral Damage’?

Posted by M. C. on August 18, 2019

Sanctions are never allowed to hurt politicians nor the military. It is always the people.
The US government claim that US sanctions do not affect medicines and humanitarian assistance to Iran is a bold-faced lie. They make the manufacture of medicines in Iran nearly impossible and they make the cost of medicines beyond the reach of Iranians by disrupting the supply chain of raw materials. US sanctions policy kills innocents under the guise of being “humanitarian.”

Why the United States Won’t Launch a Ground War Versus Iran

Posted by M. C. on July 22, 2019

The US is not capable of defeating Iran in a conventional war

https://theduran.com/why-the-united-states-wont-launch-a-ground-war-versus-iran/

Submitted by Steve Brown…

In recent weeks we have seen numerous probing attempts and provocations in and around the Strait of Hormuz — whether false flags or actual events — intended to raise the profile of the US’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, and renewed US sanctions versus Iran.  Iran is pushing the issue with the United States, and is apparently offering a sacrificial pawn on the board (or perhaps knight!) by seizing two British oil tankers alleged to be operating illegally in the Strait of Hormuz.

While it is too soon to predict how the United States and its allies Israel and Saudi Arabia (both sworn enemies of Iran) will react, let’s explore the reasons why any US reactionary response will be largely symbolic, even if that involves a token strike versus Iran.

Global alliances have shifted

Turkey has defacto announced its withdrawal from NATO, by its purchase of S-400 missiles. That purchase and collaboration with Russia guarantees its departure from NATO, even if Turkey has not publicly announced such a withdrawal.  Furthermore, while Turkey’s military bases host US aircraft and operations, Turkey says it will not allow its bases to be used in any attack on Iran, by the US.

Iraq, an ally of Iran, has likewise stated that it will not allow its territory to be used as a base for attacking Iran.

Next, Imran Khan’s Pakistan has moved away from its alliance with the US to court China. China is Pakistan’s largest trading partner, and China has guaranteed security to Pakistan for Kashmir. Thus, no bases in Pakistan will be provided to the United States for any attack on Iran.

China and Russia have warned Washington too that it must not attack Iran. Iran has guarantees from Russia, China, Pakistan, Turkey, and even Japan and India that its economic future is secure… despite US sanctions.

So, only Saudia remains as a host for US aggression versus Iran.  But Saudia has much to lose by hosting US aggression, especially with Russia pushing OPEC+.  And even the largely defunct Arab League opposes US aggression versus Iran, from any Saudi base.

Iran will fight back

Next, consider the military force that Iran has at its disposal. From advanced Grad rockets to the Kornet, expect an announcement soon that S-400’s and other advanced armaments will be provided to Iran to ensure its right to defend itself. That, in conjunction with an already formidable array of defensive weapons to secure Iran’s borders and sea lanes will guarantee a formidable defense.

The United States cannot afford another new war

While the Federal Reserve may print the USD at will, a new war – especially a major war versus Iran – will weaken the US economically, despite the gamed casino numbers we see daily from Wall Street…

The US is not capable of defeating Iran in a conventional war

This time, there is no “coalition of the willing” to posture and pretend that the US has many and varied allies engaged in some just cause to rid the world of evil, as it proclaimed in 1994 versus North Korea, and in 2003 versus Iraq.  Apparently, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and Solomon Islands have no real grievance versus Iran right now.

But the possibility exists that France, the UK and Germany will consider Iran enough of a threat around the Strait of Hormuz to impose additional sanctions on the country, and increase Naval military patrols to accompany tankers through the Strait. The increased patrols will increase tensions in the region, but should not result in war unless the US takes the bait of Iran sacrificing a knight to leave the West’s queen exposed, ie a greater war in the Middle East which may involve Iraq, Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Last time, just ten minutes prior to pulling the trigger (depending on accounts!) to consummate the Neocon’s dream for war with Iran, Trump had other ideas. Now,  let’s review the reasons the United States cannot initiate a ground war versus Iran.

Iran Strike Strategic map

Afghanistan

Most likely candidate here would be to stage US air strikes on Iran from Bagram air base. But at this time Afghanistan seeks closer ties with Iran on trade; for example, to trade with India via Iran’s Chabahar port.

And while the US could stage air strikes from Bagram, to launch a ground attack from this region would be a virtual impossibility. That is, due to mountainous terrain and firmly entrenched and well-armed IRGC mountain troops, neighboring.

Furthermore, it is exceedingly likely that Dostum/Ghani would forbid any attack by the US on Iran from Afghanistan, that would result in a major new war. And note that Dostum is pushing for the removal of US troops from Afghanistan, including its air bases…

What of Iran’s Motives?

The culture that invented the game of chess never makes a move without careful and calculating consideration. Iran has been forced to play black for decades now, and has done so with skill, alacrity, and will take the initiative whenever possible.

Whether Iran has sensed a particular point of weakness in the West at this time, or Iran has hidden agreements in place with significant allies to come to its defense in the event of an US attack, is of course unknown.

That Iran may be holding a surprise move in check with support from its allies must be of extreme concern to the US Hegemon.  And eventually that concern must be all of ours, when the hegemon inevitably fails to intimidate and control the board with its white advantage, and its queen is taken.
