Gannon University and Money for Nothing-It’s not a song, it’s the government

According to the Erie Times News Gannon University has accepted a $300,000 grant to combat a sexual violence problem that it admits it does not have. A DoJ grant funded by you and me.
Ted Marnen, the director of Gannon University’s office of campus police and safety, said there isn’t evidence that the university has a problem with sexual violence.
But he wants to find out for sure.
According to Department of Justice statistics, 5 percent of college women are raped or are victims of attempted rape during their time in school.
Gannon University students are well below that mark, with less than 1 percent reporting completed or attempted rapes, Marnen said. He said the university averages 1.66 rapes on campus per year.
Like Times columnist Eugene Robinson says about stimulus money-It doesn’t matter how its spent-just spend it.
Sexual violence is obviously bad and fearful victims must not be afraid to seek help. Perpetrators must be brought to justice. I would think Gannon would have the mental (professors) and physical (ads in college publications, fliers, self-help classes) resources to help fearful victims. This is a “University” for heaven’s sake. If the University police, Erie police, Erie County Health and the myriad of other selfless help organizations in Erie County can’t deal with a few campus violence cases a year, there is Mercyhurst College whose forte is criminal justice. I think we can deal with a relatively non-existent problem more efficiently “in-house” for less than $300,000. Most importantly, the bungling, inefficient, overbearing federal government would not be involved and making things worse.

Great point, but this is the usual political pay-offs to gain votes. For years Penn State University studied how to reduce the chemical problems of mine run-offs, because the FEDs would pay for it. They already knew putting lime in the water run off solved it, but the money was good. Specie backed money would help reduce this constant insanity, but we’ll print away to gain votes…and power.
