The Tyranny of the “Enlightened” Experts | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on April 6, 2021

Furthermore, the government itself contains mechanisms that lead to poor choices of experts and officials. For one thing, the politician and the government expert receive their revenues, not from service voluntarily purchased on the market, but from a compulsory levy on the populace. These officials, therefore, wholly lack the pecuniary incentive to care about serving the public properly and competently. And, what is more, the vital criterion of “fitness” is very different in the government and on the market. In the market, the fittest are those most able to serve the consumers; in government, the fittest are those most adept at wielding coercion and/or those most adroit at making demagogic appeals to the voting public.

If you were to stroll through any typical upper-middle-income American neighborhood in 2021, the odds are very high that you’d observe at least one yard sign exuberantly proclaiming something like this: “In this house, we believe that science is real, love is love, no human is illegal … ” and other banal tautologies. There are usually six or seven examples in this litany, but really, one of the main goals of the yard sign—aside from signaling virtue—can be accomplished with just this: the curtsy to Science.

In a country where the traditional definition of virtue has “evolved” and the search for metaphysical truth has largely been sidelined, millions of Americans seem to believe that there is no higher truth than the Science and that there are no more virtuous citizens than those who deferentially submit to the experts, the societal planners, and the proclaimers of the Science. We can thank the Enlightenment for this spirit of scientism, as Science has now been fully separated from teleology (i.e., “goal directedness”) and final causality, which many elites consider to be backward Medieval thinking.

This separation—and the general idea that human beings and their interactions can be boiled down to and predicted by physical phenomena and scientific methods—has led to numerous destructive movements such as scientific socialism, historical materialism, and even progressive racialism. While Science has indeed provided wonderful breakthroughs that enhanced human flourishing, it does not engender all knowledge that is necessary for human societies.

As John Gray has documented in Seven Types of Atheism, several of the leading Enlightenment figures—including David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Voltaire—infused some of their writings with a pseudoanthropological racism. This is particularly evident in Kant’s Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime and Hume’s notes accompanying his “National Characters” essay. Gray states that: “Though twenty-first century missionaries for ‘Enlightenment values’ resist the fact, modern racism emerged from the work of Enlightenment philosophes.”

Out of the Enlightenment’s penumbra of positivism, proponents of eugenics and scientific racism achieved some prominence in the late 1800’s and the Progressive Era of the early 1900’s. Eugenics notoriously sought to use Science to “purify” the human race through selective breeding practices and even forced sterilization. Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, coined the term “eugenics” and began to apply Darwin’s work in evolution to human societies. Margaret Sanger, the well-known founder of the American Birth Control League and the first president of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, infamously—and with a disturbing enthusiasm—worked to reduce the birth rate in African American communities as part of the “Negro Project.” Sanger also advocated for the sterilization of disabled people.

None of this is meant to imply that all Enlightenment thinkers were racists (they weren’t), or that all progressives support eugenics (they don’t). Going beyond merely calling attention to the dark underbelly of one of the West’s sacred cows, though, it’s a relatively safe assertion that the Enlightenment’s intellectual offspring—including technocrats, government science advisors, and the elite expert class of academics and commentators—have been responsible for disastrous public policy measures over the past several decades.

Thankfully, not all of their recommendations and prognostications have come to fruition. Paul Ehrlich (a professor of biology at Stanford, fellow at the National Academy of Sciences, and evangelist for population control measures) outlandishly predicted a number of neo-Malthusian horrors, including the mass starvation of hundreds of millions of humans, increases in global poverty, and an exploding world population in the 1970s and 1980s. The spread of free market ideas, advances in medicine, and other latent factors have ensured that his “Population Bomb” never went off, but impacts of his work still haunt us, in the modern Green and Build Back Better movements.

Harmful, impractical, and costly ideas of the expert class, as well as the experts themselves, often infiltrate the government’s regulatory machine, at which time they are inflicted upon the general populace. Murray Rothbard discussed this in Power and Market:

Despite all of their misaligned incentives, which often lead to detrimental outcomes for individuals and small communities, the technocratic expert class is still intimately involved in practically every aspect of our lives. Nothing in recent times illustrates this more poignantly than the arrival of SARS-CoV-2.

In early 2020, Americans were besieged by a tidal wave of sloppy, reckless, and malevolently pessimistic news stories and information about the burgeoning coronavirus pandemic. Medical scientists and bureaucrats at the World Health Organization overestimated covid’s mortality rate at an alarming 3–4 percent. (The infection fatality rate is now estimated at ~0.15 percent.) Public health officials took the worst-case-scenario fatality estimates of epidemiological modelers such as the now disgraced Neil Ferguson at Imperial College London, promulgated them throughout the corporate media, and began implementing draconian measures that would radically alter civil society.

In the first months of the pandemic, the government monopolized and bungled the distribution of covid tests and the Food and Drug Administration delayed approvals for new test alternatives. Then US surgeon general Jerome Adams and Dr. Anthony Fauci admonished the public that they should not be wearing masks in public, before completely reversing themselves months later. Fauci would go on to mislead Americans about threshold numbers for herd immunity, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would end up changing the scientifically conjured social distance spacing from precisely six feet to precisely three feet, coinciding with growing political pressure to reopen schools. In March of 2020, the federal government and most states coordinated a de facto national lockdown of the economy.

Millions of people were ordered to “stay home, stay safe” for the disastrous two-week “flatten the curve” crusade that would last for more than a year in some states. Government scientists and public health experts decided that the livelihoods of tens of millions were expendable, and the educational and social needs of a generation of young Americans could be sacrificed for the common good. Thousands of cancer screenings and other medical tests were postponed for several months, under the Lockdown regime. Many small businesses and restaurants will never open again. The pain caused by government experts will be felt for many years.

Of course, scientists qua scientists were never supposed to run our society. Scientific technocrats and the expert class cannot possibly possess all of the knowledge that they would need to effectively run the lives of 330 million Americans, but that will not stop them from trying. They might be Enlightened, but perhaps there is still an incorrigible, ornery remnant in the United States who will resist efforts to be managed, regulated, and perfected by the experts. Author:

The “Mind Viruses” Creating Social Justice Warriors | Mises Wire

idea pathogens on university campuses fall into several large categories. Postmodernism posits that all knowledge is relative (no objective truths)…. Social constructivism proposes that the great majority of human behaviors, desires, and preferences are formed not by human nature or our biological heritage but by society, which means, among other things, that there are no biologically determined sex differences, but only culturally imposed “gender roles.”

The Parasitic Mind: How Infectious Ideas Are Killing Common Sense
by Gad Saad. Regnery, 2020
xvi + 240 pages

Gad Saad, a psychologist who specializes in applying evolutionary biology to the study of consumer behavior, has written a book of great value, and moreover, it is a book that required great courage to write. The book is filled with interesting ideas, and I have space here to mention only a few of them.

What most draws me to the book is that Saad has a philosophical turn of mind, and as such, he is concerned with fashionable attempts to deny the existence of objective truth. He says,

The central focus of this book is to explore another set of pathogens that are as dangerous [as biological parasites] to the human condition: parasitic pathogens of the human mind. These are composed of thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, and mindsets that parasitize one’s ability to think properly and accurately. Once these mind viruses take hold of one’s neuronal circuitry, the afflicted victim loses the ability to use reason, logic, and science to navigate the world. Instead, one sinks into an abyss of infinite lunacy best defined by a dogged and proud departure from reality, common sense, and truth. (p. 17)

The mental viruses Saad has in mind are to a large extent those that deny that human beings have a biological nature. He says, for example,

Many idea pathogens share one common thread, a deep desire to liberate people from the shackles of reality. Take, for example, the blank slate premise of the human mind. It posits that humans are born void of any evolved biological blueprints and innate individual differences. Our eventual life trajectories are thought to be fully shaped by the distinct environment to which we’ve been exposed. (p. 70)

It is exactly here that Saad has manifested his courage, as the followers of many fashionable movements deny what he affirms and have been quick to boycott and blacklist dissenters. He tells us that the

idea pathogens on university campuses fall into several large categories. Postmodernism posits that all knowledge is relative (no objective truths)…. Social constructivism proposes that the great majority of human behaviors, desires, and preferences are formed not by human nature or our biological heritage but by society, which means, among other things, that there are no biologically determined sex differences, but only culturally imposed “gender roles.” Radical feminism asserts that these gender roles are due to the nebulous and nefarious forces of the patriarchy. Transgender activism purports that biological sex and “gender” are non-binary fluid constructs. Scientifically speaking, postmodernism, social constructivism, radical feminism, and transgender activism are all based on demonstrable falsehoods. (p. 69, emphasis in original)

Saad has placed great stress on the findings, as he takes them, of evolutionary biology, but how do we know these findings are true, and, moreover, so firmly established that resistance to them can be characterized as mental pathology? In a crucial passage, he says that evolutionary theory is supported by “nomological networks of cumulative evidence.” “This approach epitomizes the gift of the human intellect. It is akin to building a jigsaw puzzle. No single piece is sufficient to see the full image but once all of the pieces are placed in their rightful positions, the final pattern emerges clearly” (p. 146).

Saad, it transpires, firmly believes that science is our best means to attain objective truth. “Philosophers have offered many frameworks to define truth. Mathematical proofs, for instance, are axiomatic truths. Empirical truths, on the other hand, are sought by the scientific method” (p. 143, emphasis in original). Saad’s views about evolution and science merit careful consideration, but my aim here is to present them rather than evaluate them. I would, though, note one problem. When he says that the “scientific method is the universal epistemological framework for understanding the world around us” (p. 57, emphasis added), he is making a statement that he takes to be true, even though it is a philosophical statement and not a scientific one.

In his stress on the objectivity of logic and reason, Saad finds an ally in Ludwig von Mises, whom he cites:

The contemporary progressive mantra considers it laudable to argue that different races, cultures, or religions possess distinct ways of knowing. However, not too long ago, the idea that people of different races or classes possessed distinct ways of thinking and reasoning, was reserved for racists and other miscreants. Ludwig von Mises … coined the term polylogism to capture this exact folly. Mises differentiated between Marxian polylogism and racial polylogism…. Polylogism is an anti-science notion, as Mises well knew…. There is no “black mind” or “white mind,” no “white male way of knowing” or “indigenous way of knowing,” there is only one truth, and we find it through the scientific method. (pp. 59–60)

An objection might occur to some readers, but Saad has an answer to it. Saad says that there is only one way of knowing, not separate male and female ways of knowing, but doesn’t he also, against those he calls radical feminists, emphasize biologically based differences between the behavior of men and women? Saad would reply that there is no contradiction: there are evolutionary reasons for both universal logic and sex-based differences in behavior.

If science is to continue to progress, it is essential that all lines of inquiry be open. This openness ought not to give way to the demands of certain “oppressed” groups that controversial views that hurt their feelings should be banned:

Given that they are so wrong, how do the ideologues defend their idea pathogens? Under totalitarian regimes, the solution is direct. You criminalize if not violently suppress (or kill) any dissenting voices. In the West, the ideological indoctrination is subtler. It is achieved by an ethos of political correctness and best enforced by creating university campuses that lack intellectual diversity … intellectual terrorists instruct generations of gullible students to remain quiet in their classroom seats while they inculcate them with anti-science nonsense. (p. 92, emphasis in original)

The “social justice warriors” have met their match in Gad Saad, and readers will benefit from the many stimulating ideas in The Parasitic Mind. Author:

The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity : Why is the Biden Administration Pushing Ukraine to Attack Russia?

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2021

But according to the media branch of the US military-industrial-Congressional-media complex, Russian troop movements are not a response to clear threats from a neighbor, but instead are just more “Russian aggression.”

The unhinged US “experts” behind the 2014 coup against the elected Ukrainian president are back in power and they are determined to finish the job – even if it means World War III! The explicit US backing of Ukraine’s military ambitions in the region are a blank check to Kiev.

On March 24th, Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky signed what was essentially a declaration of war on Russia. In the document, titled Presidential Decree No. 117/2021, the US-backed Ukrainian leader declared that it is the official policy of Ukraine to take back Crimea from Russia.

The declaration that Ukraine would take back Crimea from Russia also followed, and was perhaps instigated by, President Biden’s inflammatory and foolish statement that “Crimea is Ukraine.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who was a chief architect of the US-backed coup against Ukraine in 2014, continued egging on the Ukrainians, promising full US support for the “territorial integrity” of Ukraine. Many Americans wonder why they are not even half as concerned about the territorial integrity of the United States!

Not to be outdone, at the beginning of this month US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin – who previously served on the board of missile-maker Raytheon – called his counterpart in Ukraine and promised “unwavering US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.” As the US considers Crimea to be Ukrainian territory, this is clearly a clear green light for Kiev to take military action.

Washington is also sending in weapons. Some 300 tons of new weapons have arrived in the past weeks and more is on the way.

As could be expected, Moscow has responded to Zelensky’s decree and to the increasingly bellicose rhetoric in Kiev and Washington by re-positioning troops and other military assets closer to its border with Ukraine. Does anyone doubt that if the US were in the same situation – for example, if China installed a hostile and aggressive government in Mexico – the Pentagon might move troops in a similar manner?

But according to the media branch of the US military-industrial-Congressional-media complex, Russian troop movements are not a response to clear threats from a neighbor, but instead are just more “Russian aggression.”

The unhinged US “experts” behind the 2014 coup against the elected Ukrainian president are back in power and they are determined to finish the job – even if it means World War III! The explicit US backing of Ukraine’s military ambitions in the region are a blank check to Kiev.

But it is a check that Kiev would be wise to avoid cashing. Back in 1956 the US government pumped endless propaganda into Hungary promising military backing for an uprising against its Soviet occupiers. When the Hungarians, believing Washington’s lies, did rise up they found themselves all alone and facing Soviet retaliation.

Despite the cruel US propaganda, at least Eisenhower was wise enough to realize that no one would benefit from a nuclear war over Budapest.

Why is it any of our business whether Crimea is part of Ukraine or part of Russia? Why is it any of our business if the Russian-speaking population of eastern Ukraine prefer being aligned with Russia?

Why, for that matter, are unproven allegations of Russian meddling in our elections a violation of the “rules-based international order” but an actual US-backed coup against an elected Ukrainian government is not?

We are seeing foreign policy made by Raytheon and the other US military contractors, through cut-outs in government like Austin and others. Feckless US foreign policy “experts” believe their own propaganda about Russia and are on the verge of taking us to war over it.

It seems as if Americans are sleepwalking through this dangerous minefield. Let us hope they soon wake up before we’re all blown up.

EPA’s totalitarian assault on America – Ice Age Now

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2021

His second goal is to increase “cooperation” between the EPA and its “subordinate” state environmental agencies. EPA will dictate; states will fall in line.

For decades, the EPA relied on unreviewable studies to impose draconian restrictions on businesses and industries, and thus on the U.S. economy. Trump wanted to bring true transparency to the process. Opponents claimed the Trump secret science” rule would block the use of critical public health studies kept secret supposedly to protect the identities of trial participants – which of course was not the case.

The EPA claims modifying a vehicle previously certified for street driving for use as a competition-only racecar is unlawful even for vehicles that are trailered and never driven on public roads again. This policy seeks to end a 50-year-old American tradition. It has no precedent; even California exempts racing vehicles from regulation.””Not only does the EPA claim it is illegal to convert a vehicle for racing by modifying its emission system; it claims manufacturing, selling or installing race parts for such vehicles is likewise unlawful. It’s even said enforcement actions against high performance parts – including superchargers, tuners and exhaust systems – will now be a top priority

Using ‘transparency’ and ‘dialogue’ to target auto racing, then all fossil fuel use, all controlled by a dictatorship of faceless and nameless totalitarians
– Duncan Flanakin

______________

“One of the Trump EPA’s final actions revised and overturned “secret science” rules that let the agency hide or modify questionable data and still claim it was being “transparent,” writes Paul Driessen. “One of the Biden EPA’s first actions restored this secretive, manipulative science. One of its next actions aims to use ozone regulations and secret science to eliminate racecar driving in America – and then eradicate fossil fuel use, and control the entire US economy.”

“Biden-Harris EPA Administrator Michael Regan clearly has “bold aspirations and a long to-do list,” says the Washington Post, as he works to increase “cooperation” between the EPA and its “subordinate” state environmental agencies. As Duggan Flanakin explains, this means EPA intends to dictate, and states will be expected to fall into line.”

EPA’s totalitarian assault on America

Using ‘transparency’ and ‘dialogue’ to target auto racing, then all fossil fuel use
All controlled by a dictatorship of faceless and nameless totalitarians

Duggan Flanakin

Biden-Harris Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan is clearly on a mission. He has “bold aspirations, and a long to-do list,” says The Washington Post. But to succeed, the Post acknowledges, he must “help the EPA get its groove back.” As Reagan put it, “We’ve got a lot of work to do, starting with rebuilding staff morale and getting all our staff back to feeling as if they matter, their voices matter.”

Regan says his job is “to restore the scientific integrity and the utilization of data, of facts, as we move forward, and make some very important decisions.” His second goal is to increase “cooperation” between the EPA and its “subordinate” state environmental agencies. EPA will dictate; states will fall in line.

A big step toward that goal was extending a Memorandum of Agreement between the EPA, the Environmental Council of the States, and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. According to Regan, “EPA is committed to building on the values of transparency, respect, and an open dialogue that are the cornerstone of a successful partnership with the states.” As EPA defines the terms.

The EPA’s use of “secret science”

An Obama-appointed federal judge just restored the EPA’s use of “secret science” in formulating regulations that businesses and industries must follow just because the EPA says so – with “scientific evidence” that cannot be cross-examined. U.S. District Judge Brian Morris (in Great Falls, Montana) took just hours before vacating the Trump EPA rule that would have ended this Star Chamber style rule.

As Trump EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler explained, the “secret science” rule in no way blocked previous “secret” studies; rather, it created tiers in which preference is given to studies with public data. Peer reviewers looking at a study’s raw data did not need to know any of the subject’s names, so no patient confidentiality was at risk. Moreover, in most cases, a review of basic methods, statistics and results is sufficient to determine if they actually support the study’s conclusion. Wheeler also noted:

“Too often Congress shirks its responsibility and defers important decisions to regulatory agencies. These regulators then invoke science to justify their actions, often without letting the public study the underlying data. Part of transparency is making sure the public knows what the agency bases its decisions on.”

Fear Not | UK Column

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2021

Of course, we no longer have a king, as our ancestors wanted. We have gone a stage further. We have politicians.

Our Queen Elizabeth sits on her ancient throne, but does not reign. She might hear and see the travails of the people, but she does not speak on our behalf. She keeps the throne in being, nothing else. She refuses to fight our battles. She will not lead.

No, we have politicians now. Do you think that is better or worse?

https://www.ukcolumn.org/blogs/fear-not

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

A few days ago, I went in to a Subway sandwich shop to buy a cup of coffee. It did not go well.

“Do you have a mask?” the man behind the counter asked.

“No,” I said.

“Do you want a mask?”, he replied.

“No,” I said.

“You must wear a mask; it is the law in Scotland,” he intoned.

“No, it’s not,” I said, and I left, no longer wanting his coffee.

So what this man believed is that “The Law” could force me to cover my face: he presumably also agrees that this “law” can prevent me from seeing friends and relatives; this “law” can say who can attend a funeral; this “law” can regulate every aspect of our lives and we can only obey. Now, I stand on the law, I love the law, but I do not recognise this strange and unexplainable “law” that would oppress me and which says “You are permitted no free will”, “you must obey”, “you are a slave”.

How, ladies and gentlemen, did this happen? How did the law, which was to protect us from tyranny, become an instrument of tyranny? The answer to that question is what I want to talk to you about today. How did we get in this awful mess?

The original law, God’s law, was thundered from a mountaintop in the wilderness. Its purpose was to call a nation out of slavery — slavery to human masters and slavery to sin. In those days, that nation, called Israel, was governed by the law of God, administered by judges. They had no other form of government. No king, no parliament, no bureaucrats, no police. They needed none. They were governed by the word of God.

But our ancestors were not happy: they looked at other nations, governed by kings and tyrants and said, “We want to be like them. We want a king to judge us.” The Lord said:

They have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

But, nevertheless, the Lord respected their choice. Yet he did warn them what sort of king they would have: one that would take their sons and daughters into his own service. One that would regulate and regiment the people. One that would steal from the people and hand the proceeds to his own servants. One that would take a proportion of everything they earned and hand it to another.

Does any of this sound familiar?

But our ancestors did not listen; they said:

Nay; but we will have a king over us; that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

They rejected rule by God and by God’s law, not because this made them free, but because they could not shoulder the responsibility that it places on every man and woman: to made make judgements, decisions and commitments; to stand—alone, if necessary—for the truth and for justice. They rejected God because being ruled by a man, and being told what to do, was easier. They did not want the law of God, a law that they would need to place in their hearts and to defend. Instead, they wanted a ruler to think for them and to fight their battles. Slaves they had been, and slaves they still were in their hearts.

A king or queen is born into their position; they might turn out to be capable or incapable, dilettante or accomplished, harsh or gentle, merciful or vindictive. A politician, on the other hand, is selected. Chosen from a vast range of wannabes, based on their abilities. Their ability to lie convincingly and not get caught. Their willingness to steal from the people and to use the proceeds to buy loyalty from those they need. Their ability to prey on people’s fears. Their skills in the manipulation of public opinion. And their ruthlessness with former friends who stand in their way.

To these people, selected from the worst, to be the worst, we have handed over power to rule us. And worse still, we call their pronouncements and statutes “laws”. They are not laws, they are the opposite of laws. They are rules for slaves. The law is for free men and women who want to live free and be free in their hearts.

Let us look, then, at the law, as it was thundered from the mountaintop. For the most part, it states what you cannot do, not what you must do. For example:

Thou shalt not kill.

The Liverpool Care Pathway and related treatments for the elderly in the NHS are killing people, plain and simple. Drugging them, starving them and dehydrating them. It is against the law.

Matt Hancock has announced that (despite Covid travel restrictions) people can still travel abroad for assisted dying. This, too, is against the law.

Another example:

Thou shalt not steal.

There is no exemption stating “except by majority vote”.

The only positive commandment is to:

Honour thy father and thy mother.

Under Covid regulations, we are told we cannot see our father and our mother, or we must stand behind a Plexiglass screen and not hug or touch those who gave us life.

Nearly two thousand years ago, Christ was asked what is the greatest of the commandments. His reply was that:

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

He then said:

And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Our politicians say we cannot love God with all of our heart and mind, for that would be offensive to some of our fellows and we will be arrested under hate-crime laws or for breaching the peace. And we cannot love our neighbours, for they may have Covid and are outside our bubble.

Our politicians take everything the law defines as righteous and make it illegal. They take everything the law prohibits and they make it either legal or compulsory. They turn white to black and black to white. How do they do this?

They use fear.

In the King James version of the Bible, there are 170 cases of mankind being instructed to “fear not”. This is not a coincidence. It recognises a plain truth of the human condition. Two failings of the human heart can be exploited to get us to commit evil acts: pride and fear. Our politicians know this well and use both, all the time.

If we remember to be neither filled with pride nor driven by fear, we become free (and we also become a threat to the system).

In the Book of Isaiah, God said:

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

And in the 23rd Psalm, the psalmist says to God:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

But our politicians say, “NO! Be afraid. The Lord cannot help you. Only adherence to OUR words and OUR laws can save you from Covid–19. To live, you must comply. To comply, you must fear. And to fear you must be faithless. So abandon God and you shall not surely die,” hisses the politician.

But we have been here before: we have a choice, we can refuse fear. We can choose the real law, the one that is based on the words “Fear not”.

The English scholastic philosopher John Wycliffe translated the Bible into English so that it could be understood by the common man and woman. In the introduction, he said:

This Bible is for the government of the people, by the people and for the people.

This was half a millennium before a blood-soaked American politician stole those words to justify an unnecessary war that had killed three quarters of a million Americans.

Wycliffe saw that when we write the law of God in our hearts, then He governs us. When this happens, then we have no need of earthly rulers, nor their phoney regulations, nor their theft, nor their fear. He also saw that God’s law, as it requires us to love our neighbour as ourselves, prohibits all forms of slavery, including that imposed by a dictatorial state, for the dictator is bound to love the humblest of his people as himself and so cannot impose any tyranny.

He saw that Christianity is in reality incompatible with the state. It is no accident that the state and its wars and oppression has grown as faith has ebbed, for:

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Wycliffe spoke against the authorities of his time; he was a maverick, a dissident. He wrote that:

I believe that in the end the truth will conquer.

Ladies and gentlemen, we should believe this too.

So what, then, is the core of our problem?

We cannot serve two masters. We must address the question “Who rules?”. Or rather, who writes the rules. Who is sovereign? Parliament has claimed sovereignty. Our Queen is called Sovereign. The People (en masse) claim sovereignty. And the individual man or woman can claim to be sovereign. All of these claims have some merit, but all lead to the place we stand today, as slaves under tyrannical rule.

We have free will: we can choose, we do not need to consent. We can turn to our Lord and say He is sovereign, we can choose His law, a law of love and a law of freedom. Freedom from sin and freedom from the oppression it generates. In doing so, we choose faith, hope and love. We reject fear and pride.

We find solid ground on which to stand as we reject the Covid scam, the global warming scam and every other state-funded boondoggle that tells us to be afraid and to yield our God-given liberty to a state that claims it will save us from our fears.

For they will no longer be our fears. We can reject them as easily as we can remove a mask and smile and talk to our neighbour.

And every smile, every caring word, every day spent living without fear is a victory!

Republicans Must Take On “Woke Corporations” if They Want to Defeat The Globalist American Empire – Revolver

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2021

A few months later, the Georgia legislature codified Deal’s workaround into law. The NRA stunt was over, and Delta still got exactly what it wanted.

Was Delta being rewarded for backtracking, and restoring the discount? Of course not. Delta completely ignored the GOP, and in a few months they buckled anyway. In early 2019, Delta CEO Ed Bastian even took a victory lap in an interview.

https://www.revolver.news/2021/04/georgia-republicans-delta-coca-cola-woke-capital-voting-rights-fraud/

They came so close. But like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, you just knew they were going to blow it.

On the final day of the 2021 legislative session, the Georgia House passed legislation that would revoke major tax exemption for Delta Airlines, after the company intervened to protest the state’s new election law. For a brief moment, embers of hope were kindled in the hearts of nationalists. Were state-level Republicans finally breaking free from their subservience to woke megacorporations that despise and ridicule them?

Alas, no. Right after the Georgia House passed the bill, the state senate declined to even take it up. The measure died, and Georgia’s legislative sessions closed that night. Delta still has its big tax break. It was all for show.

This is why Republicans always lose. Instead of making corporate power serve the interests of the state and its people, they get the relationship backwards, and beg for scraps from companies that are openly allied with their enemies.

There is nothing extreme about the Georgia election reform bill. It bans the pseudo-bribery of voters by giving free food and drinks to those who arrive at polling stations. It cuts the state’s exhausting 9-week runoff period down to a more reasonable four weeks. And most importantly, the bill requires photo ID for voting absentee by mail, which doesn’t make fraud impossible but does make it substantially more burdensome to commit.

The bill is reasonable and restrained. It is far less ambitious than the bill Republicans initially hoped to pass. No matter. Democrats have summoned woke capital to threaten the state and treat it like apartheid-era South Africa for making moderate revisions to its election laws. Coca-Cola dutifully trashed the bill on Wednesday, and Delta did the same.

WATCH: Check out Darren Beattie’s latest interviews

The only valid response to such threats is to put capital in its place. The people rule in Georgia, not woke corporations. But Georgia Republicans are too weak to do that.

Like so many states, nominally “free market” Georgia gives preferential treatment to certain powerful or favored companies. Right now, state law exempts jet fuel from the state sales tax. The exemption, which costs the state about $40 million a year, is primarily meant to benefit Delta, which uses Atlanta as its primary global hub. Delta turned a $4.8 billion profit in 2019, so there is no sensible reason to give it such a tax break, unless it is providing some exceptional benefit to the people of Georgia.

But of course, the opposite is the case. Delta has openly placed itself in opposition to their interests. In 2018, Delta showed its subservience to the left when it revoked a discount for NRA members in response to the Parkland school shooting. At the time, Georgia lawmakers were considering implementing the jet fuel tax break as part of a larger bill. In response to Delta’s behavior, the GOP House jettisoned it from the final bill.

Georgia lawmakers voted to punish Delta Air Lines Inc. on Thursday, passing a sweeping tax bill that excludes a tax break that would have saved the airline millions of dollars.

In a tweet Monday, Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle said he would ““kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta” unless the airline rescinded its decision to end a discount for National Rifle Association members. “Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back,” he said. [MarketWatch]

It was tough talk. But of course, the state GOP didn’t have the courage to back it up. Not even five months later, the state’s Republican leader resurrected the tax break on his own.

Georgia’s governor on Monday made good on his vow to restore a tax cut on jet fuel sales that was previously killed by state GOP lawmakers irate with Delta Air Lines for ending a discount for members of the National Rifle Association.

Republican Gov. Nathan Deal issued an executive order suspending collection of the state’s 4 percent sales tax on jet fuel beginning Aug. 1. The Georgia General Assembly could reinstate the tax when it reconvenes for the 2019 legislative session in January. [AP]

In a recent interview with LinkedIn’s Daniel Roth, posted nine days prior to the anniversary of Delta’s decision to end the NRA discount, Delta CEO Ed Bastian opened up about the decision and the events that followed the controversial decision.

In the interview, Bastian referenced the fact that in the wake of the shooting, the NRA engaged in “divisive commentary.” Bastian said he did not want Delta to be seen as an advocate of the NRA and the NRA’s response to the shooting. He recalled discussing the matter with fellow colleagues, saying, “We just can’t be doing this. This just is not who we are.”

When asked by Roth about Delta’s decision, Bastian did not hesitate to explain why he and other individuals at Delta acted to end the discount. “We can’t be seen as being advocates in any way,” Bastian explained in the interview. While many saw Bastian’s decision as a stance on the gun control debate, Bastian reaffirmed that the decision was not political. “We weren’t anti-NRA,” he added.

…

While some pro-NRA flyers claimed they would boycott the airline, Bastian confirmed that the negative press and tax changes were only temporary. Georgia eventually reinstated the tax exemptions. [The Points Guy]

Bastian’s declaration that “we can’t be seen as being advocates in any way,” of course, was a lie.

On Wednesday, Bastian released a statement denouncing Georgia’s new elections bill. You might need a photo ID to board one of Delta’s flight, but needing one to vote absentee, he explained, is a crime against nature.

Last week, the Georgia legislature passed a sweeping voting reform act that could make it harder for many Georgians, particularly those in our Black and Brown communities, to exercise their right to vote. … I need to make it crystal clear that the final bill is unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values. … The entire rationale for this bill was based on a lie: that there was widespread voter fraud in Georgia in the 2020 elections. This is simply not true. Unfortunately, that excuse is being used in states across the nation that are attempting to pass similar legislation to restrict voting rights.

So there is much work ahead, and many more opportunities to have an impact. I want the entire Delta family to know that we stand together in our commitment to protect and facilitate your precious right to vote. …In the weeks and months ahead, we will be working with leaders across the political spectrum in states nationwide in this effort. We’re also closely monitoring legislation in Congress – named after the late Atlanta civil rights hero and Delta friend John Lewis – that will expand voting rights nationwide and working with the Representatives and Senators that represent our communities. [Delta]

Two years ago, Bastian’s line was “we can’t be seen as advocates.” But what Bastian meant was “we can’t be seen as advocates for conservatives.” Being an advocate for the corrupt ruling class of the Globalist American Empire isn’t just acceptable, it’s obligatory.

The Congressional legislation Bastian refers to, the John Lewis Civil Rights Act, would dramatically expand federal power over elections by requiring the Department of Justice to pre-clear any voting law changes at the state level. For Delta, requiring a photo ID to vote by absentee ballot is unthinkable and “does not match Delta’s values,” but stripping states of the power to make their election laws and forcing them to submit to a hostile DOJ bureaucracy is the essence of good government.

If Democrats were displeased with Delta, they might actually do something. Bastian knew Georgia Republicans wouldn’t dare touch him. They were impotent in 2018, and impotent in 2021.

Some conservatives have responded to the Georgia House’s failed push to repeal the Delta tax as a victory. This is mistaken. There is no victory at all in threatening to take action, and then doing nothing after extracting zero concessions.

Republicans could respond by vowing to raise those company’s taxes, and in the future grant preferential treatment to parties that stay genuinely neutral or side with the American people instead of the Globalist American Empire. But they did not. Most said nothing. Senator Marco Rubio at least made an attempt, but instead of seriously threatening Delta, he simply wagged his finger at them for their relationship with China.

Dear @Delta:

You are business partners with the Communist Party of #China

When can we expect your letter saying that their ongoing genocide in #Xinjiang is “unacceptable and does not match Delta’s values”??? #WokeCorporateHypocrites

— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) April 1, 2021

#WokeCorporateHypocrites pic.twitter.com/ZHFTias5pg

— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) April 1, 2021

Rubio’s pleading will achieve nothing. Nagging corporations for their Chinese activities is useless. In China, the government will actually punish companies that try and boss them around. If Rubio wants Delta to listen, he should start rallying Republicans to do the same thing. But in America, woke capital already knows it holds all the cards.

In March 2018, Georgia’s Lt. Governor claimed that “corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back.” Well, so far, conservatives haven’t fought. And until they start fighting, they’ll keep losing.

It doesn’t matter if these evil and corrupt companies are nominally “American” if their consistent policy is to side with the agenda of America’s corrupt ruling class rather than the American people. The time to bring woke capital to heel was yesterday.

The Left’s Conquest of the Church – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2021

We must look at the common denominator in all of left-wing Christianity’s policies. And it comes down to this- all of them require more government control. This is true whether it involves the environment, gay “rights”, racial diversity, or welfare. Thus, the Left is using Christianity as a tool for tyranny, a tool to gain more control

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2021/04/derek-dobalian/the-lefts-conquest-of-the-church/

By Derek Dobalian

For the first time in history, the Christian Church has been hijacked by Leftists. Of course, the Left has had influence on the Church before, but they are getting closer and closer to a total takeover. Why is this happening? Well, for a few reasons, chiefly among them that our current Church leaders are intellectually weak. However, the main reason is that the Left has control over every major institution in America and saw that the last one yet to be conquered, and not coincidentally the strongest one, was the Church. They decided they must have that too. And the Church’s leaders were all too ready to oblige.

Why is this so dangerous? Well it’s dangerous for the Christian faith for the obvious reason that it represents a total corruption of the Bible and the morality it teaches. But it’s dangerous for American society and liberty because it adds “Thus saith the Lord” to all of the Left’s commands. And as CS Lewis stated in God on the Dock, when the State “adds to its commands ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ it lies, and lies dangerously.” The intent is to give the people the impression that by complying with their rules, they are obeying God.

One question that comes to mind when witnessing this takeover is how was the Left able to convince so many Christians? The reason for this success is because, just like Lewis said in The Problem of Pain, we are living at a time when society has confused God’s goodness with simple kindness. Thus, we all now believe that if it seems kind, it is good. So, they tell us it is kind for a baker to make a cake for a gay marriage, and thus bakers ought to be required to do so. They tell us it is kind to subsidize those among us who are less fortunate, and thus that money ought to be taken from others. They tell us it is kind to protect the environment, and thus we must ban certain convenient and affordable things. Unfortunately, many laypersons have fallen for these traps. Many of the Church leaders have done so as well, while the remaining are either too cowardly to fight it or not equipped well enough intellectually to do so.

We must look at the common denominator in all of left-wing Christianity’s policies. And it comes down to this- all of them require more government control. This is true whether it involves the environment, gay “rights”, racial diversity, or welfare. Thus, the Left is using Christianity as a tool for tyranny, a tool to gain more control. The Left has bullied Christian leaders into Marxist thinking- if someone is successful, someone is being oppressed. In order to help the “oppressed,” we are told we must punish others who have never known such oppression. Hence, the recent embrace of Critical Race Theory by many leaders on the Church. This theory tells us that certain groups owe something to other less fortunate groups, but it doesn’t stop there. Advocates of CRT say in order for that obligation to be fulfilled, the State must use force and target the “privileged.”

What is the solution? Teach what Scripture actually says and equip people intellectually with arguments against the Left’s distortions of God’s Word. Leaders in the Church cannot cower in fear, they must recognize what is going on and learn to use God’s Word effectively and accurately. Christians must forcefully reject left-wing policies that demand we sacrifice more of our liberty and grant the government more control. The Left’s influence in the Church will continue to grow if we do not. And if the Left completes its takeover of the Church, it will have finalized its conquest of the civil society and of Western Civilization.

My Corner by Boyd Cathey

Mercer argues rightly that the United States, considering the terrible and epochal culture war we are in, should be allied with such countries as Putin’s Russia and Viktor Orban’s Hungary—both nations which uphold the traditions and heritage of historic Christian civilization.

American Foreign Policy Advances the Globalist Revolution

And My Prayers and Good Wishes for Easter

Friends,

On this site, on occasion, I have shared essays and columns by other writers, items by friends that I believe should be more widely read and pondered. These essays address important issues that are not always that well focused or discussed by the so-called “conservative media,” essays that seem to pinpoint with specificity issues and questions that affect us. In the past I have passed on essays and columns by Pat Buchanan, Paul Gottfried, “The Dissident Mama,” Jack Kerwick, Clyde Wilson, Philip Leigh, Paul Craig Roberts, Brion McClanahan, and others.

Many of my own columns and essays are printed at The Abbeville Institute and Dr. Wilson’s Reckonin.com; many others show up at LewRockwell.com, and in the past at Chronicles magazine and The New English Review. But there are other, excellent pieces featured on those sites and by those journals as well that deserve wider distribution.

One writer who is also a dear friend is Ilana Mercer. Ilana writes a regular column that is printed in various venues. A former citizen of South Africa, she has seen quite personally how the ravages of Marxist and Communist revolution can destroy a civilized country and its social structures. And she has recounted that experience—and warning to the West—in detail in her necessary volume, Into The Cannibal’s Pot: Lessons For America From Post-Apartheid South Africa. It’s a book that more Americans should know and pay heed to, for there are certain parallels with the insane post- or neo-Marxist “woke” anti-racist and anti-white revolution now occurring almost unopposed here in the United States. Indeed, what is now happening here makes the revolution in and transformation of South Africa seem mild in comparison.

In a recent column, Mercer offers a broad survey which examines the tragically obtuse and wrongheaded policies of the United States around the globe: for decades, whether under Democratic or Republican presidents—it seems to make little difference—American policy has been to impose on other countries by whatever method was convenient or available an egalitarian leftist-liberal “democratism,” a uniform global model as part of a universal zeal to remake the world. Older traditions, inherited religious belief, valued customs, and forms of government and statecraft which do not hew the “democratic” line and do not celebrate “equality” (as our government apparatchiks define it successively to suit their globalism) become pariah states. And soon, with the influence of US government-supported and financed NGOs (non-government organizations), “opposition” groups pop up in those non-juring countries. With American funding and the enthusiastic participation of almost the entirety of the US media, including most so-called “conservative media” (e.g. Fox News, National Review, The Wall Street Journal, etc.), new paper “heroes of democracy” are created and showcased.

Thus, currently, we have an Alexei Navalny in Russia, heralded and praised for his opposition to that evil dictator (no doubt the reincarnation of Joseph Stalin), President Vladimir Putin. Yet, Navalny and his pitiful opposition to Putin and the vast majority of Russian citizens would not even be a passing blip on the international scene were it not for American funding and support. Like what our State Department and CIA have done in Ukraine, in Georgia in the Caucasus, and elsewhere, such insignificant figures become larger than life when the American foreign policy permanent institutional class gets involved with its unlimited largesse and media voices. And that history of devious involvement goes far back into the earlier years of the Cold War—in Vietnam, for example (with the American coup against President Diem) and in other countries where the native leadership did not suit the globalists who have essentially controlled our foreign policy and its real effects internally on recalcitrant nations since the end of World War II.

Mercer argues rightly that the United States, considering the terrible and epochal culture war we are in, should be allied with such countries as Putin’s Russia and Viktor Orban’s Hungary—both nations which uphold the traditions and heritage of historic Christian civilization. Yet, our country has ranged itself directly and aggressively on the side of the globalist barbarians who seek to pervert and destroy that civilization. Indeed, arguably it is the USA which is the very locus and heart of that assault…it makes no difference if a Ronald Reagan or Donald Trump gets elected…it makes little difference that there are 75 million “deplorables” out in the nation who at least intuitively recognize that America is and has been on the wrong course for decades. The managerial state and its interlocking and impenetrable bureaucracy can withstand all that—as we have painfully seen through its resilience and unbowed resistance to even the very minor changes advocated by Trump during his tenure.

That mammoth “deep state” apparatus has emerged now, more powerful and authoritative than before, and more intent on finishing the job of inverting and, practically, destroying what remains of Western Christian civilization.

Just recently I discovered a rather recent Spanish film (with English subtitles), “Mientras Dure la Guerra” (Blu-Ray DVD, 2019) (“While the War Lasts”), which chronicles the opening months of the Spanish Civil War, from July until October 1936. Of course, hardly any major film these days is going to treat the Spanish Nationalist anti-Leftist side in that conflict with genuine fairness; but this movie, with limitations, comes about as close as anything these days. Viewing the issues and beginning salvos of the contest through the eyes of the aged philosopher Miguel de Unamuno (Rector of the Pontifical University of Salamanca), it manages to express, if obliquely, the reasons why millions of Spaniards at that time welcomed the rising against the Socialist republic and its Soviet enablers. Through the voice of Unamuno we hear of the terrorism of the Marxists and anarchists inflicted on the Church, and the persecution, the rioting, and the subservience of the Socialist government under Manuel Azana.

Of course, there are the perfunctory condemnations of fascism and paeans to democracy, and Unamuno’s final disaccord (he had welcomed the coup initially). Yet, enough gets through. In one significant moment you see General Franco, when asked by his brother Nicolas what would be the overarching theme of the insurrection, he underlines a passage in a declaration by Unamuno—“the defense of Western Christian civilization.”

Today America is dying for lack of men of stature to raise once again that standard. The progressivist contagion controls most of our institutions domestically, and for decades has controlled our foreign policy.  As Pat Buchanan asked rhetorically several years ago when comparing Vladimir Putin’s defense of historic Christian civilization and its inheritance with what our nation does around the world: “On what side is God now on?”

It’s a question that Americans should ask, seriously and thoughtfully, as we observe the Easter Triduum, three days which for us all mean that we too can be Resurrected with the Risen Christ if we have faith, do our duty and have Hope.

My Easter good wishes and prayers for each of you.

Spain Passes Law Mandating Face Masks Even While Swimming in the Sea – Summit News

Posted by M. C. on April 4, 2021

https://summit.news/2021/04/02/spain-passes-law-mandating-face-masks-even-while-swimming-in-the-sea/

Paul Joseph Watson

Spain has passed a new law forcing people to wear face masks everywhere outside and even while swimming in the sea.

Yes, really.

The legislation, which came into effect on Wednesday, mandates face coverings for children as young as six, with refusniks facing fines of €100 euros.

The only exemption to the rule is adults playing sports outside, but people tanning outside or swimming in a pool or the ocean are still required to cover up.

“This will apply to people who are sunbathing or even swimming in the sea,” confirms the London Evening Standard.

The utter stupidity and real danger of having to wear a face mask while swimming in the sea goes without saying.

Having to wear a face covering while placing yourself in a situation where you have a heightened risk of encountering breathing difficulties is totally insane.

Thankfully, there has been a huge backlash to the law, which has “spread dismay through Spain’s tourism industry,” according to the London Times.

Erie Times E-Edition Article-Ending child poverty is mission worthy of this great nation

Posted by M. C. on April 4, 2021

Sounds great! But Casey has forgotten we still have LBJ’s war on poverty that began in 1964 with a cost, so far, of $22 trillion.

“I am from the government and am here to help”.

https://erietimes-pa-app.newsmemory.com/?publink=0d93ce59c

Your Turn

Sen. Bob Casey Guest columnist

For too long, America has led the Global North in the number of children living in poverty. Historically, almost one in seven kids in the United States grow up in poverty and the United States has consistently ranked near the bottom of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in child poverty rates. Poverty not only affects individual children, but also has broader societal effects, including higher spending on health care, increased rates of crime, reduced rates of educational attainment and higher spending on remedial education. This is unacceptable. Fortunately, the recently enacted

American Rescue Plan legislation takes the largest step since the Great Society of the 1960s to end child poverty in America.

The pandemic and subsequent economic fallout have highlighted the challenges that many children and their parents face: lack of child care, hunger, disparities in health and education access and outcomes, among others. The labor force participation rate for women is the lowest we’ve seen since the 1980s. Women are almost three times as likely as men to not be working due to lack of child care. Access to quality and affordable child care is essential to our nation’s economic recovery as one in five working-age adults said child care was a reason they were not working.

The American Rescue Plan (ARP) has provided a foundation for transformative change in the lives of children in America and working parents across our commonwealth and our country. Under the ARP, Pennsylvania families will receive support from the historic expansions of the Child Tax Credit and the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit. The Child Tax Credit will increase to $3,000 (and to $3,600 for children under age 6). Legislation I authored will expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit and will help parents cover up to half the cost of child or dependent care. Working parents can get up to $4,000 for child care expenses for one child or up to $8,000 for two or more kids or dependents. For example, a family making $65,000 with two kids that has $10,000 in child care expenses will receive $5,000. Both tax credits will now be fully refundable, allowing all families to take advantage of the credits.

Responding to the hunger crisis that the pandemic further exacerbated, the ARP also includes immediate food assistance that can reach our most vulnerable children and communities. Through an extension of the 15% increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through the end of September, we can continue to respond to the severity of food insecurity that families now face. An extension of the Pandemic-EBT (P-EBT) program will also provide much needed food assistance through the summer for children when schools are closed and school meals are inaccessible. Additionally, the ARP directs additional investments to vulnerable children through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to modernize the program, expand service delivery models, improve outreach and participation and temporarily increase the amount of fruit and vegetables participants can obtain.

Many of the policies in the ARP are consistent with policies that I announced last year in my Five Freedoms for America’s Children proposal. My Five Freedoms proposal suggests a series of polices that, taken together, represent a fulfillment of our commitment to American children. The plan is built on five pillars: The freedom to be healthy, the freedom to be economically secure, the freedom to learn, freedom from hunger and the freedom to be safe from harm. We made extraordinary down payments on a number of these in the ARP, but we have to make them permanent going forward.

We must also set aggressive child poverty reduction targets and measure progress toward them. This target will be critical in sustaining and improving upon any progress made through the important policies in the ARP. My bill, the Child Poverty Reduction Act of 2021 (S. 643), would do this. It would establish a national goal of reducing child poverty by half in 10 years and require annual reporting on the progress we are making toward that goal.

We also know that food insecurity in Pennsylvania and throughout the country will unfortunately outlive the pandemic. For this reason it is essential that we continue to work to address hunger among children. A bill that I will soon introduce, the School Hunger Elimination Act, would expand access to healthy meals and drastically help reduce hunger in schools. As Congress looks to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act this year, these reforms can help expand eligibility and assistance through school meals to our most vulnerable children and families.

President Biden and Democrats are keeping our promises to millions of Pennsylvanians, investing in our economy and in our workers and lifting half of America’s children out of poverty. Ending poverty among children is a mission worthy of a great nation. With the passage of the ARP, our nation is one step closer to providing vulnerable children with the resources they need to grow and succeed.

Democrat Bob Casey has represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate since 2006.
