Tanks for Nuttin’ – TomDispatch.com

Posted by M. C. on February 14, 2023

Why do Ukrainians killed by Russia generate headlines, while deaths attributable to Mexican drug cartels — 100,000 Americans from drug overdoses annually – are treated as mere statistics?

https://tomdispatch.com/tanks-for-nuttin/

Andrew Bacevich

The name of the game in Ukraine seems to be escalation, not just in the fighting (with a major Russian offensive expected soon), but in weaponry, too. Only recently, after initially refusing, President Biden agreed to send advanced American M-1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine (partly to push Germany to dispatch its own advanced Leopard 2 tanks and other European countries to do the same). And that, sadly enough, represents just another step up the ladder to… well, who knows quite what.

The Ukrainians are now demanding that the U.S. (and so, as with those tanks, other NATO allies) supply its air force with F-16 jet fighters. In an unsettling analog to the German tank accord, the Polish government seemed to agree to deliver some of its F-16s to the Ukrainians, with one proviso: that NATO (that is, the U.S.) agree to do the same. In Washington, those planes had been considered a “red line” not to be crossed and not so long ago President Biden offered a flat “no” to the very idea — as he had, once upon a time, with those tanks, too. In other words, in a phrase now in use at the Pentagon, he “M1-ed” the idea. As it happens, sentiment at the Pentagon already seems to be shifting, suggesting that the president’s F-16 position may soon prove to be so yesterday. Only recently, in fact, the U.S. agreed to send Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs that would double the range of that country’s rocket batteries, though like the tanks and possible planes actual delivery remains in an undefined future.

Here’s a question to consider: Once promises are indeed made to deliver those F-16s, what can Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demand next? It’s worth recalling that, in 1994 in a remarkable move, the Ukrainians returned to Russia the massive nuclear arsenal left there when the Soviet Union collapsed. It had briefly made the new nation into the third-largest nuclear power on Earth. The Ukrainians did so, however, only after the Russians agreed “to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine.” No small irony there, right?

Is it too farfetched, then, to imagine that, once those F-16s are assured, Zelensky could begin demanding tactical nuclear weapons? After all, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his confederates have already muttered more than once about using such weaponry against Ukraine.

I know, I know, that’s certainly one wild jump too far, except that so much has proven unnervingly too far in the first major European war since World War II ended. As TomDispatch regular Andrew Bacevich, author of the remarkable new book On Shedding an Obsolete Past: Bidding Farewell to the American Century, suggests today, perhaps nothing is inconceivable when what’s at stake is “civilization” itself (as defined in both Moscow and Washington). Tom

Is Civilization at Stake in Ukraine?

BY ANDREW BACEVICH

“To defend civilization, defeat Russia.” Writing in the unfailingly bellicose Atlantic, an American academic of my acquaintance recently issued that dramatic call to arms. And lest there be any confusion about the stakes involved, the image accompanying his essay depicted Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Hitler mustache and haircut.

Cast Putin as the latest manifestation of the Führer and the resurrection of Winston Churchill can’t be far behind. And, lo, more than a few observers have already begun depicting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as the latest reincarnation of America’s favorite British prime minister.

These days, it may be Western-supplied missiles downing “kamikaze drones” rather than Spitfires tangling with Messerschmitts over southern England, but the basic scenario remains intact. In the skies above Ukraine and on the battlefields below, the “finest hour” of 1940 is being reenacted. Best of all, we know how this story ends — or at least how it’s supposed to end: with evil vanquished and freedom triumphant. Americans have long found comfort in such simplified narratives. Reducing history to a morality play washes away annoying complexities. Why bother to think when the answers are self-evident?

Doug Casey on How Inflation Destroys Civilization… and What You Can Do About It

Posted by M. C. on November 17, 2022

Doug Casey: I’ve always been a hard-money person, a gold bug. Gold is money in its most basic form. Only a fool trusts a government with money, especially when the writing on the wall is so clear.

https://internationalman.com/articles/doug-casey-on-how-inflation-destroys-civilization-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/

by Doug Casey

International Man: According to a recent Newsweek poll, 63% of Americans “strongly support” new government stimulus checks to combat inflation.

In other words, let’s fight the effects of money printing by doing even more money printing.

What’s your take on this?

Doug Casey: The nature of the US has been transformed. Americans have come to see the government as a cornucopia that can kiss everything and make it better—especially since the bailouts of the Biden Administration.

That attitude has become a cultural value and very hard to change. “Panem et circenses,” as the Romans said, has become necessary for both the government and its subjects. Remember that the prime directive of any entity—whether it’s an amoeba, an individual, a corporation, or a government—is to survive. The present government can’t survive without supporting more than half the population, which has become parasites. But the government itself is the biggest parasite of all. Can parasites live on each other forever? No. To use an overly fashionable word, it’s “unsustainable.”

Where will the US government get the money it needs to survive? It can no longer even remotely survive on its tax receipts; deficits of one to two trillion per year lie ahead for the indefinite future. It can no longer borrow adequate amounts from either American citizens or foreign governments—just rolling over the $32 trillion of existing debt, forget about trillions of new debt, at anything near current interest rates is hard enough. So there’s no alternative left for them but to print more money. And print they will (electronically, of course). The thousands of “economists” at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department have no more of a grip on sound economics than government economists in Argentina or Zimbabwe.

Disaster is absolutely written into the government’s DNA at this point. There’s no realistic way out.

International Man: As many Americans are now realizing, inflation has a way of perpetuating itself. However, many countries have been down this path before.

For example, Argentina has infamously been trapped in a perpetual cycle of hyperinflation and socialism from which it cannot escape.

Is the US now entering that same inescapable cycle?

Doug Casey: Money printing makes you think that you’re getting something for nothing. It’s dishonest, criminal actually, and leads to a moral collapse. It causes a war of all against all, as everyone in the country attempts to get his share of government money—which is to say, stolen money—before the next guy. It’s hard to see how you break the cycle short of defaulting on the national debt, cutting government spending very radically, disengaging from foreign wars, eliminating regulations wholesale, and replacing paper with gold as the national currency, among other things.

If those things happened, the economy would boom after a short albeit extremely deep adjustment. But the chances of all that happening are about zero. What we’ll likely get is a long-lasting and dismal depression overlaid with a police state and general chaos.

The US became the world’s freest and most prosperous country because it was a middle-class society. Middle-class people tend to be conservative, self-sufficient, and family-oriented. They’re future-oriented workers and savers. The problem is that the US middle class is being squeezed, as Lenin predicted, between the millstones of taxation and inflation. They’re being wiped out.

What’s left are the upper and lower classes. Very wealthy politically-connected types live in enclaves far above the plebs, viewing themselves as masters of the universe. These wannabe globalists essentially despise American values and traditions. Meanwhile, the lower classes basically live hand to mouth, assisted by numerous types of welfare. They think they can vote for a living. For that reason, I expect a Guaranteed Annual Income to be a major theme in the ’24 elections. “Something for nothing” will become official policy.

International Man: Historically, the government has fought the effects of excessive money printing by raising interest rates.

Today, however, the government’s debt load is much higher than in the past.

If interest rates were to rise to the level needed to combat today’s rising prices, it could bankrupt the US government—and everyone else.

Some Students Want Me Fired for a Thought Experiment

Posted by M. C. on November 7, 2022

Civilization’s progress depends on the freedom to express eccentric and provocative ideas.

https://walterblock.substack.com/p/some-students-want-me-fired-for-a?r=iw8dv&utm_medium=android

By Walter E. Block

A large group of students want me fired from my faculty position. The main charge they make against me is that I believe slavery is wrong for the wrong reasons—“because it goes against Libertarianism, not because it is morally wrong.”

In truth, I repudiate slavery on both grounds. I even favor reparations, but not from all whites to all blacks. Many whites came to the U.S. long after 1865 and owe nothing to anyone. Many blacks, too, are, or are descended from, recent arrivals, and are thus entitled to no compensation. Slavery should have been declared a crime, ex post facto. The guilty should have been imprisoned and their property given to their victims, the new ex-slaves. “Forty acres and a mule” is a rough approximation of the compensation that was due. Nowadays if a great-grandchild of slaves can demonstrate this connection, he should be able to obtain acreage from the great-grandchildren of slave holders who improperly held onto their plantations.

It’s true I have argued “there is nothing inherently wrong with slavery”—an eccentric and provocative view. To understand it, consider a thought experiment: Suppose my son has a dread disease. Its cure costs $10 million, which I don’t have. You do, so we make a deal: You give me the funds. I come to your farm to harvest crops or to your home to give you economics lessons. If you don’t like the way I perform these duties, you may physically assault or kill me.

Is this a legitimate contract in the free society? I say yes. We both benefit from it, at least in theory, as in all voluntary transactions. Hence there is nothing inherently wrong with slavery; it is illicit if it is imposed by one person over another, but not if both parties agree. (I have similarly argued in these pages that socialism is unobjectionable if it is voluntary.)

The petition authors are not the first to misrepresent my views.

Falling Apart of the Civilization

Posted by M. C. on August 31, 2022

By Jayant Bhandari

What matters to the wokes is virtue-signaling while they have no empathy or compassion for anyone—their materialistic, animalistic desires drive them. Lacking any moral fabric, they have no inhibitions about dipping their hands in others’ pockets. They feel no shame in asking for the unearned. Lacking self-responsibility, they always have someone to blame for their real or imagined suffering. Unable to think critically or think at all, they don’t want their valueless, hedonistic, animalistic ways to be challenged.

There are a whole range of gradations between what were the progressives of the past and this emergent popular culture, wokeism, represented by the Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau and his team of federal ministers, the US President, Joe Biden, the Vice President, Kamla Harris, the Supreme Court Justice who cannot define “woman.” None of these people would have come to power had we not upended meritocracy by choosing our leaders through democracy, handing over institutional control in the West to the lowest common denominator, the bread-and-circuses masses, the bottom 51% of the voters.

Some people consider Christianity or Islam to be the fastest-growing religion. As statistics are presented, that is indeed the case, but unaware of the nuances, one can be misled.

A rapidly rising insidious religion is wreaking havoc in the West and the Third World. It has hallowed out Christianity. It is quickly finding converts in the Muslim world, in a silent apostasy that even the fundamentalists cannot challenge. It is finding converts worldwide, even when people speciously continue to adhere to their formal religions.

It looks cute, non-violent, mostly innocuous, secular, and even kind-hearted.

It is proliferating, not because of any conspiracy or proselytization but because its growth is a natural outcome of falling away from civilizational restraints and ethical conduct. It is a result of entropy. It has come to be known as “wokeism,” a belief system of no beliefs, a value system of no values, where there is no objective morality. If you engage in female genital mutilation as an immigrant, there is no problem among the “wokes.” You have the right to preserve your culture.

For the wokes, everything is subjective and relative. Emotions, not reason or morality, are the basis of logic.

They have come to control the institutions in the Western world. They don’t understand the concept of classical justice. Their ideology is deeply imbued with multiculturalism, diversity, feminism, LGBTQ, environmentalism, egalitarianism, affirmative actions, safe spaces, etc. It is not that there is a problem with any of the issues they raise, but they lack comprehension or understanding of the associated costs. More importantly, behind the façade of their activism is an attempt to transfer the responsibility for their failure in life to others and to get free resources.

Those who provide a counterpoint get a fatwa—they get canceled and removed from functioning in society. Worse is to come in the West as the cancel culture matures slowly and surely. A valueless, amoral society is not in-your-face evil but barbarous and savage in its outcome. And that outcome is inevitable in a society that has lost its civilizational moorings.

Most people think wokeism to be childish and irresponsible. Some might say that a dose of wokeism can soften fundamentalist Islam. What is wrong if something challenges the fundamentalism that Islam engenders? That is until you have not experienced wokeism. I should know better. I grew up in a woke culture—in India—which had no values, morality, or civilizational constraints and where getting away with crime was glorified.

A few days back, the Indian government, in a widely publicized event, released some men who had been in prison for rapes, brutalities, and killings, which included children and babies. On their release, sweets were distributed. Politicians of the ruling party called them “good Brahmin.” The criminals’ release before the upcoming regional elections should tell you something.

No one knows better about the psyche of the citizenry than politicians. Politicians know how to motivate voters. The release of the criminals is a well-calculated affair. It will increase the vote in favor of the ruling BJP party. These voters are not criminal or evil in the conventional sense. But, as is the culture of India, these voters have no values. They overlook the pain that the rapes and killings inflicted on their victims.

Hannah Arendt rightly invoked the concept of the banality of evil. When civilizational constraints fall away, you are left with savagery and barbarism, even when you mostly see innocent-looking people around you.

Evil hardly ever is a fierce-looking, sharp-toothed devil. It is usually alluring. It caters to our animalistic instincts.

Those who grow up in a culture that subliminally enculturates ten commandments, compassion, and empathy might assume that these values occur naturally to human beings. These values came to exist in the West over several millennia after a tremendous struggle, a civilization-building process. These values are conspicuous by their absence in the Third World and among the wokes in the West—and there is a reason why the wokes have an affinity for the Third World cultures. They are the same.

What happens when society has no values? Does it become free, where people can do whatever they intend to do with their personal lives? Unfortunately, having a civilization requires certain boundaries and fences and a moral code of conduct, where people’s animalistic desires are fenced in to at least ensure that the liberties of others are not violated. A civilization requires social opprobrium for certain acts, even for what does not seem to hurt others.

Our Entire Civilization Is Structured Around Keeping Us From Realizing We Can Do This

Posted by M. C. on July 26, 2022

By Caitlin Johnstone
CaitlinJohnstone.com

If you’ve ever wondered why so much energy goes into keeping everyone propagandized in our society, this is why. If you’ve ever wondered why our rulers work so hard to keep us divided against each other, this is why. If you’ve ever wondered why we’re always being instructed to take our grievances to the voting booth even though we learn in election after election that it never changes the things that most desperately need to change, this is why.

Rise, like lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many — they are few!

~ Percy Bysshe Shelley

The video footage coming out of Sri Lanka right now has been the recurring nightmare of every ruler throughout history.

Thousands of protesters outraged by the deteriorating material conditions of the nation’s economic meltdown have stormed the presidential palace of Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and I guarantee you the aerial footage as they poured into the building en masse has made every government leader and plutocrat a little uncomfortable today.

https://twitter.com/NewsWireLK/status/1545686446224183296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1545686446224183296%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lewrockwell.com%2F2022%2F07%2Fno_author%2Four-entire-civilization-is-structured-around-keeping-us-from-realizing-we-can-do-this%2F

Just look at that. Look at all those people flooding in there. That is some truly awe-inspiring power. Imagine how terrifying it would be to find yourself on the receiving end of it.

I don’t know enough about what’s going on in Sri Lanka yet to comment with any authority on what powers might be at play in this uprising, but I do know that every ruler throughout history has spent time envisioning what would happen if a crowd that size decided to storm their base of operation. If their numbers became too great to suppress, or if your forces who would be doing the suppressing joined the ranks of the people instead, the best-case scenario for you is that you’d have already fled the building by that point, as Rajapaksa had the good sense to do shortly before the building was stormed. If enough angry people get their hands on you, it won’t matter if they’re armed with rockets or pistols or their own bare hands; you are in for a violent end.

Our entire civilization is structured around preventing scenes like the one we’re seeing in Sri Lanka today. Our education systems, our political systems, our media, our online information. Religions that have been around for thousands of years because the powerful endorsed and promulgated them are full of passages extolling the virtues of obedience, poverty, meekness, and rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar’s. From the moment we are born our heads are filled with stories about why it’s good and right to consent to the status quo and why it would be wrong to take back what has been stolen from us by a predatory ruling class.

https://twitter.com/BNONews/status/1545692019288416256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1545692019288416256%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lewrockwell.com%2F2022%2F07%2Fno_author%2Four-entire-civilization-is-structured-around-keeping-us-from-realizing-we-can-do-this%2F

This is why we’re always inundated with messaging about the importance of civility and politeness any time people realize that they can simply confront corrupt officials in restaurants or at their homes to push for what they want. The managers of the oligarchic empire which rules over us are terrified that we will one day notice that there are a whole lot more of us than there are of them, and that there’s really nothing they could do to stop us if we decided to replace them with a system which benefits ordinary people instead of an elite few.

Things are getting worse and worse because the systems that are in place are designed to exploit and oppress rather than to uplift and help thrive. Those systems will protect their own ability to continue to exploit and oppress until the people use their numbers to replace them with something healthy. The people will never use their numbers to replace abusive systems with something healthy as long as they are successfully propagandized away from doing so.

This is why our political and media institutions act the way they act and why our systems are set up in the way that they are: to keep us from realizing how easy it would be to shrug off the old mechanisms of oppression like a heavy coat on a warm day and build something new that works for all of us.

Things will keep getting worse until we find a way to cut through the propaganda brain fog and rise like lions.

The Great Reset: Turning Back the Clock on Civilization

Posted by M. C. on June 17, 2022

Based on the WEF agenda, the successful completion of the current industrial transformation will require redesigning and controlling every minuscule aspect of human life and behavior, including the private spheres of individuals, the economy, politics, and societal organizations, without the possibility of voluntary and spontaneous cooperation between individuals based on their will, values, thoughts, and beliefs.

https://mises.org/wire/great-reset-turning-back-clock-civilization

Birsen Filip

The covid-19 pandemic featured an unprecedented fusion of the interests of large and powerful corporations with the power of the state. Democratically elected politicians in many countries failed to represent the interests of their own citizens and uphold their own constitutions and charters of rights. Specifically, they supported lockdown measures, vaccine mandates, the suppression of a variety of early treatment options, the censorship of dissenting views, propaganda, interference in the private spheres of individuals, and the suspension of various forms of freedom. All of these policies and measures were centrally designed by the social engineers of the pandemic.

Globalists, who are obsessed with societal control, decided to take advantage of the pandemic in order to increase their authoritarian power. Prominent among them was, Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of World Economic Forum (WEF). In June 2020, he stated that “the pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world.” According to him, “every country, from the United States to China, must participate, and every industry, from oil and gas to tech, must be transformed.”

It is no secret that the WEF has focused on accelerating the implementation of central planning for the entire global population since the early days of pandemic. This plan to establish a new world order, known as the Great Reset, was a key theme at the recent annual meeting of the WEF, which was held during May 22–26 in Davos, Switzerland.

Drastic changes to the world order like the Great Reset do not happen spontaneously; rather, they are designed by global policy makers, including influential billionaires, politicians, celebrities, biased academics, wealthy philanthropists, and the bureaucrats of international organizations and institutions. These types of people support social engineering, because it will enable them to acquire control over the world’s wealth and natural resources, and strengthen their ability to shape society as they see fit.

Like their predecessors across history, the social engineers of the WEF believe that “there must be no spontaneous, unguided activity, because it might produce results which cannot be foreseen and for which the plan does not provide. It might produce something new, undreamt of in the philosophy of the planner.”1

When the Mind Goes Into Default Mode – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on August 13, 2019

But when you listen to the gaggle of Democratic Party presidential candidates with essentially the same baseless claim to run your life with policies that would be far more disruptive of your interests, you become aware that you are not hearing the voices of good-natured chuckleheads; but of men and women who fully intend to make their delusions enforceable through the coercive powers of the state.

Most conservative and Republican speakers make only token, superficial responses to the leftists, because they have little depth to their own understanding of what is at stake.

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2019/08/butler-shaffer/when-the-mind-goes-into-default-mode/

By

Just because everything is different doesn’t mean anything has changed.
– Irene Peter

It is not a matter of coincidence that the collapse of civilization is accompanied by otherwise intelligent men and women negating their mind’s capacities to think, reason, and understand the complexities of their world. When systems and practices upon which previous social relationships were grounded no longer work, it can be said that the conduct of humans in society is subject to the principle offered by Thrasymachus in Plato’s Republic: “Justice is serving the interests of the stronger. Just action is obedience to the laws of one’s state.” I add my own definition in the sentiments of economics: “justice is the redistribution of violence.”

Life experiences inform me that there are no objectively “true” or “correct” principles by which we ought to live. There are, however, principles that lead to differing consequences, the preferences depending upon whose interests are at stake. Politicians are perfectly happy with Thrasymachus’ opinion, while many of us would prefer principles that placed individual interests above those that give priority to collective political interests. It is up to each of us to think through the implications of either alternative, just as the political establishment has consistently found it to its interests to condition and subordinate our minds to its purposes.

Those who seek to control our lives must first gain control of our minds. If one of your neighbors went through the neighborhood with a gun, informing you that he was the sovereign authority therein, and that you were required to obey his orders, how would you respond? When, as a child, I visited my aunt and uncle on their farm, there was a retarded man in the neighborhood who informed us that he was the local sheriff and we had to do as he directed. Since he was completely harmless and pleasant, the neighbors tended to humor him and treat him with respect.

The explanation for this, I suspect, is that for decades conservatives grounded their thinking and policies on anti-communist premises. When the Soviet Union collapsed they lost their raison d’etre. They tended to embrace private property and free-market principles not so much from deeply-held convictions traceable to the supremacy of the individual over collectives, but as tools to be employed against the “evil empire.” I heard one current articulate conservative distance himself from the Austrian school of economics and the libertarian philosophy on grounds he was unable to explain. When individuals give up on the principles and practices that provided the foundations for a free, peaceful, and civil society, they find themselves standing intellectually naked in a world that is destroying them and not understanding why.

With rational thought and the search for truth being jettisoned by so many as standards on how to live in a complicated world, it should surprise no one that the modern political arena resembles nothing so much as H.L. Mencken’s “carnival of buncombe.” The likes of Jefferson, Franklin, and Sam Adams no longer dominate political thinking, while Hamilton’s thinking has taken over not only in Washington, but on Broadway! Without norms that aid intelligent minds in the search for understanding, why should we expect politicians to propose policies grounded in anything more profound than the whims of collectivists or the foggy sentiments of “tradition”? With the recent rash of mass-shootings that conveniently provide the statists with more fear-objects to reinforce their powers over a gullible public, I expect that many, if not most, Republican politicians – long defenders of the Second Amendment – will abandon their defenses of clearly expressed Constitutional principles and join with the Democrats to further curtail rights of gun-ownership.

One of the most valuable lessons learned toward the end of Western culture is found in the study of chaos. For those who had not already discovered, one of the truths to be found in the dregs of our deceased civilization is that our world is far too complex, interconnected, and changing in ways difficult to identify or measure. Chaos theory informs us that complex systems are unpredictable; that efforts to anticipate and plan for the future are as prone to error as are the attempts to explain the past (e.g., what was the cause – or causes – of the American Civil War?). As our world becomes ever-more complicated, its previous linear simplicities become more non-linear in nature (e.g., the well-known example of the straw that breaks the camel’s back). For this reason, a hunting/gathering society would be easier to organize and direct to desired ends by central management, than would a modern, international, industrial enterprise…

With George Carlin no longer around to help keep me amused – his mind never functioning in the default mode – I will have to depend on the politicians to keep me entertained. I haven’t checked today’s news, but when I do, I may find that Rep. Dildock will have proposed a bill that would send everyone now living in America back to the country wherein their most recent ancestor lived, and require each to apply for residency or citizenship in order to re-enter this country.

The late Richard Weaver reminded us that “ideas have consequences,” a truth that should be in the forefront of our minds as we sift through the rubble of our fallen civilization for future direction. Added to his warning is another admonition: the failure to live without clear, questioning, energized minds also has consequences.
