TikTok is worse than you think. But no, it shouldn’t be banned.

The TikTok Debate: Privacy, Manipulation, and a Dangerous Precedent

Data Collection: Beyond TikTok, platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram feed China through real-time bidding (RTB) systems, data brokers, and other pipelines.”

https://nbtv.substack.com/p/tiktok-is-worse-than-you-think-but

TikTok collects a staggering amount of data. Only recently, with the U.S. government moving to ban the app, have many begun to grasp the extent of its invasiveness. Beyond tracking what you watch and interact with, TikTok monitors every tap, keystroke, and interaction within its in-app browser.

Last year, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act required ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its U.S. operations or face a ban. Here’s the reasoning they gave:

  • Data Collection and Access: TikTok enables vast data collection, including location tracking, keystroke monitoring, and personal data aggregation. The Justice Department called this “unprecedented,” raising fears of espionage and exploitation by China.
  • National Security Threats: Officials warn of potential spying, blackmail, and recruitment by China using TikTok.
  • Content Manipulation: Concerns include the Chinese Communist Party manipulating TikTok’s algorithm to influence U.S. public opinion, suppress dissent, or spread disinformation.

Although ByteDance challenged the law on First Amendment grounds, the Supreme Court upheld it. A ban took effect on January 19, 2025, though enforcement remains uncertain after a delay announced by Trump. For now, TikTok’s future is in limbo.

So, why am I against a ban?

I’m a huge privacy advocate, and agree that TikTok is an atrocious piece of spyware. But banning it is the wrong solution. Here’s why:

1. It’s Ineffective

A ban won’t stop China—or others—from collecting data. China is already embedded in U.S. telecommunicationsIoT devices, and the data brokerage industry, which sells detailed profiles of Americans to foreign adversaries. TikTok is one piece of a larger puzzle.

  • Data Collection: Beyond TikTok, platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram feed China through real-time bidding (RTB) systems, data brokers, and other pipelines.
  • Manipulation: TikTok’s algorithm isn’t unique—other platforms also manipulate public opinion through content curation, advertising, and social graphs. This problem is actually a huge issue that we have to face, and a ban on TikTok won’t stop it.

2. It Creates a False Sense of Security

Banning TikTok might feel like a win, but it’s an illusion. Politicians get credit for “solving” the problem, while the real threats persist. People become complacent, assuming the issue is resolved, and the urgency to address broader privacy concerns fades.

3. It Sets a Dangerous Precedent

This is the most important reason: Censoring software establishes troubling government overreach into personal choices. Today it’s TikTok; tomorrow, it could be any software the government deems problematic. Perhaps it’s Signal private messenger for “lack of regulation and impeding national security,” a privacy coin for “enabling untraceable transactions,” VPNs for “bypassing government censorship,” or non-mainstream social media for “spreading misinformation.” This precedent risks eroding autonomy and critical thinking, leaving individuals reliant on the government to decide what’s safe.

The Bigger Issue: Privacy Violations Everywhere

Meta Launches Data-Harvesting Twitter Clone, Immediately Starts Censoring

Posted by M. C. on July 7, 2023

As journalist Michael Shellenberger notes,

Within a few hours of launching, Threads was already secretly censoring users and not offering them the right to appeal.

That crazy guy Zuck, at it again!

Meta claims that over 10 million people had signed up for its Twitter competitor, Threads, in what CEO Mark Zuckerberg framed as a “friendly” alternative to the little blue bird.

“Let’s do this. Welcome to Threads,” wrote Zuckerberg in his first post on the app, which is a “text-based conversation app” where users can publish posts up to 500 characters long, and allows people to post links, photos and videos.

Threads is directly linked to Meta-owned Instagram, which has over 2 billion users. The Twitter competitor is being rolled out in over 100 countries for iOS and Android.

“The goal is to keep it friendly as it expands. I think it’s possible and will ultimately be the key to its success,” wrote Zuckerberg in a Wednesday post, casting the service as a more wholesome substitute to Twitter. “That’s one reason why Twitter never succeeded as much as I think it should have, and we want to do it differently.”

Meanwhile, data privacy and censorship concerns have emerged, with former Twitter owner Jack Dorsey highlighting the vast amount of data collected by Threads.

As journalist Michael Shellenberger notes,

Within a few hours of launching, Threads was already secretly censoring users and not offering them the right to appeal.

Meta is already too powerful. One company controls what much of the public is allowed to see. And if Threads succeeds, it will have 80% of the global market outside of Russia and China, according to one industry insider. As such, it’s reasonable to expect that Meta will censor precisely the same way the large news media corporations, including the New York Times, and corporate advertisers want it to. More censorship is what the mainstream news media, big corporations, and their celebrity pitch people have been demanding.

…additionally, Unlike Twitter, Threads collects data about “Health & Fitness,” “Financial Info,” “Sensitive Info,” and “Other Data.”

What’s ‘other data’?

Shellenberger further noted that within hours of launching, Threads was already secretly censoring users and not offering them the right to appeal.

Tucker Talks Taboos After MSM Ignores Instagram Kiddie-Porn Bombshell

Instagram is owned by…

After his first episode topped 100 million views, Tucker Carlson is back with Episode 2, exploring how we, as a population, are controlled (or coerced) directly (through laws) or indirectly (through taboos).

Carlson observes the changing societal taboos in America, suggesting that they are being dictated from above rather than evolving organically, focusing explicitly on the shift in attitudes towards race-based attacks, adultery in politics, and child molestation.

“Let’s say you wanted to control a country,” the former Fox News man begins rather joltingly.

“Well,” he explains “you’d want to make sure you had the complete obedience of everybody within your borders who was authorized to use deadly force… you’d start with the military… [and other agencies] like the IRS.”

“Controlling the guns would be a top priority for you if ever wanted to go dictatorial.”

But, Carlson, asks, what if you wanted more, not simply to control people’s behavior, “but to control how they think.”

“In that case,” he remarks, “you’d need to take charge of its taboos.”

A taboo is something that by popular consensus is not allowed, it is not illegal, but it doesn’t need to be.

“Over time, social prohibitions are more powerful and more enduring than laws.”

Until fairly recently, Tucker points out that it was taboo in this country to attack people on the basis of their race, but he notes “apparently we no longer believe that – punishing people on the basis of their skin color is not only permitted in modern America, it is mandatory… as long as the victims are white.”

Carlson questions the definition and scope of white supremacy as described by President Joe Biden…

https://players.brightcove.net/1155968404/r1WF6V0Pl_default/index.html?videoId=6327442810112

Which brings Carlson to this week’s horrific WSJ expose of Instagram’s kiddie-porn rings which he notes has resulted in exactly nothing as “one of the largest circulation newspapers in the world reported that one of the world’s most influential companies was promoting pedophilia and nobody in power did anything about it.”

As Carlson notes, “The people who run this country no longer see child molesters as the worst among us”

He expresses concerns about the blurred lines of crime, the erosion of defined legal codes, and the need to protect societal taboos as guiding moral principles.

In fact, he continues, “what we are allowed to dislike is being dictated to us from above, sometimes by force.”

The trick, that has happened slowly and then all at one, is that “when a crime has no definition, anyone can be guilty of it”

“Don’t let them rationalize away your intuitive moral sense.”

“Cling to your taboos like you life depends on them… because it does.”

In-Q-Tel: How the C.I.A. morphed into BIG BROTHER

In a nutshell, The CIA Is and has been Investing in Firms That Mine Your Tweets and Instagram Photos from the onset.  Why?  To protect you?  Think again.

In-Q-Tel: How the C.I.A. morphed into BIG BROTHER

Dianne Marshall
The Marshall Report

THE MYSTERY “Q” – SOLVED OR NOT – ALL ROADS LEAD TO “In-Q-Tel”. BIGGER THAN BIG  BROTHER!

CIAiqtcia

Q Clearance Anon?  Are people being suckered or just sucked in?  What are the real clues that Q is providing?  It appears to me that the real rabbit hole to go down is that of the data mining wonderland.  I’ll start with Jim Breyer, head of Accel which is an American Venture Capital Firm with partnership to International Data Group named IDG AccelCLICK here to find out more about IDG-Accel

Breyer invested 13 million dollars into Facebook, the same year Gilman Louie joined the Board of National Venture Capital Association of America (NVCA) who was also the first CEO of the CIAstartup “In-Q-Tel” which is an American Venture capital firm in partnership with IDG Accel.  CIA owns Facebook?

Print

In-Q-Tel is the strategic investor for the U.S. Intelligence and Defense Communities that identifies and adapts cutting edge technologies that (supposedly) make our nation safer.   In-Q-Tel was founded in 1999 for the purpose of funding companies that could develop technologies that the CIAcould — USE TO GATHER DATA.

IQT Labs (short for In-Q-Tel) explore the art of possible emerging technology in areas of interest to national security.  These areas include cyber security, biotechnology, commercial space, and advanced data analytics.  Click her to read about IQT Labs

In a nutshell, The CIA Is and has been Investing in Firms That Mine Your Tweets and Instagram Photos from the onset.  Why?  To protect you?  Think again.

While so much speculation has been placed on “Who is Q Anon?” Q has told the readers that he has the highest security clearance there is.  Everyone runs to the President or someone in his top advisory capacity as the highest clearance so they think one of these must be “Q” .  Meanwhile the agency that even the President can’t dig into is the CIA.  The CIA has grown to be a monster of its’ own making.  A secret deep state society of its’ own.  Meaning although the President can use Military to control it – the CIA appears to have gone rogue and take orders from some place other and can withhold information, even from the West Wing.  We are seeing that now.  It is now proven that the CIA has such secrecy it can even plan the assassination of the Commander in Chief, i.e. the President of the United States as they did to President John F. Kennedy. And get away with it.

Therefore, President Trump, who already communicates with his people daily in Tweets, and can use the emergency broadcast system any time to speak to the people and the world,  would not have to go on Reddit channel and seek a select group of people on line to give clues out hoping they will connect dots and be the next “we the people” CIA????  While there are indeed crumbs and many that only high clearance would know about…. the CIA’s In-Q-Tel is such a source, and a much more likely one.

SAUDI AP_17142467002109-780x547REMEMBER when President Trump visited Saudi Arabia, King Salman showed him the mother of all “terrorist finding” cyber technology.  Remember also CIA is Mossad.  Mossad was the House of Saud. CIA is In-Q-Tel.  King Salman arrested the House of Saud. What does this new cyber technology hold?  What is President Trump holding?  What can it do?  What does President Trump think of this new artificial intelligence?  What do you think of this?  What is CERN?

I believe all dots connect and point to Q-Annon as being CIA’S In-Q-Tel.  Why?  To use a new form of data mining that I shall call – effective trolling.  Approach alternative media truth seekers in their own (secret) forum – 4-Chan.  Come in like one of them to do some real time data mining.  Why?  They could want to find what type of  “I- Q’s” human critical thinkers have by playing real time data finding games with real live people?  Is “Q” an artificial program?  Or a real person?

What does “Q” (high level clearance person) have to gain by throwing out bread crumbs?  What does “In-Q-Tel” have to gain by throwing out bread crumbs?

  1. To see what people know?
  2. Analyze how fast people can analyze clues?
  3. Find out how truth researchers think things through – know their thought processes?
  4. See how many people will research and how many will rely on others to find answers?
  5. See how fast people lose interest if answers aren’t found fast?
  6. See how many are discouraged and how long it takes to discourage certain groups?
  7. See how long it takes the last one to get discouraged if nothing is forthcoming?
  8. See how many remain if any, in the end?
  9. See if anyone finds the real “Q” and how long it will take?
  10. Lure other alternative news seekers into one hub?
  11. Data mine the hub?
  12. Find out who listens to them and who their followers are?
  13. Size up strengths and weaknesses?
  14. Infiltrate and classify researchers into groups?
  15. Identify those who really know and those who don’t know?
  16. Find who is capable of finding the real threats to their secrecy?
  17. Allow people to bla, bla, bla and reveal the things their algorithms can’t detect?
  18. Take the information and use it against them with their paid disinformation agents?
  19. See who and how many will do what they are asked by “Q” without knowing who “Q” is?
  20. Create disinformation wars among credible people?

I am sure there are more reasons, these are the ones just off the top of my head.  Before you laugh, remember they (In-Q-Tel) are already data mining everything you say on Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all social media sites…

Silicon Valley Giants Collaborate With The US Government On Venezuela – Caitlin Johnstone

Posted by M. C. on May 13, 2019

https://caitlinjohnstone.com/2019/05/11/silicon-valley-giants-collaborate-with-the-us-government-on-venezuela/

Whenever you speak out on a public forum against internet censorship, like the recent Instagram/Facebook banning of Louis Farrakhan, Infowars, and several right-wing pundits, you always offend two major political groups. The first group are the power-serving authoritarians who identify with the left side of the political spectrum; they argue that it’s good and right to trust Silicon Valley plutocrats to regulate political speech on giant monopolistic platforms. The second group are the capitalism cheerleaders who believe there’s a free market solution to every problem; they argue that these Silicon Valley giants are private companies which are completely separate from the government, so it’s not accurate to refer to what they do with their own property as censorship.

Is that really true, though? Is it really accurate to claim that these sprawling corporations that nobody’s been able to compete with are simply private companies, separate and distinct from the government of the nation they’re based in? If you look at their behavior, it certainly doesn’t seem like it.

The US government is working to topple the government of Venezuela and replace it with a puppet regime. On the off chance that you were still in denial of this self-evident fact, check out this April 24th fact sheet on the website for the US embassy in Brazil which openly boasts about the way economic and diplomatic pressures are being deliberately placed on the Venezuelan government to install Washington puppet Juan Guaido to the nation’s leadership. Trump’s National Security Advisor has blatantly threatened that the US will starve the families of Venezuelan military officers if they don’t overthrow their government, right there on Twitter.

This is a known, unconcealed US government agenda. And the Silicon Valley giants are actively facilitating it.

For example, as highlighted by journalist Max Blumenthal, if you go to Google and look up Venezuela’s embassy in Washington, DC, the result you get looks like this:

Google lists Venezuela’s ambassador to the US as Carlos Vecchio, who has no governmental power and no authority to issue Venezuelan passports, because he represents no actual government but rather the puppet government that the US is attempting to install. Google has no reason to refer to this US government propaganda construct as “Ambassador”, but it does so anyway in support of the US government’s aggressive campaign to replace the Venezuelan government staff in the DC embassy with the staff of its imaginary puppet regime.

Google, by the way, has been financially intertwined with US intelligence agencies since its very inception when it received research grants from the CIA and NSA for mass surveillance. It pours massive amounts of money into federal lobbying and DC think tanks, has a cozy relationship with the NSA, and has been a military-intelligence contractor from the beginning.

With Wikipedia, whose leadership allows it to serve as a narrative management operation for the US-centralized empire, it’s the same thing. Look up Juan Guaido, who has no actual political power and no authority whatsoever in Venezuela, and this is what you’ll see:

It’s been that way since January.

With Twitter it’s the same. During and immediately after the April 30th failed coup attempt in Venezuela the site suspended numerous Venezuelan government accounts, some permanently, and earlier this year Twitter deleted the accounts of nearly 2,000 pro-Maduro users. In 2017 we saw the same, with thousands more pro-Maduro accounts deleted. Nothing comparable has ever happened with the governments of US-allied nations.

With Facebook we’ve seen the pages of Venezuela Analysis and TeleSUR English temporarily suspended, along with the permanent deletion of “inauthentic” Venezuelan, Iranian and Russian accounts in conjunction with Twitter. Facebook’s censorship program is directed by the Atlantic Council narrative control firm, which is funded by the governments of the US and its allies.

There is no legitimate reason for these massive Silicon Valley corporations to be acting in the interests of US State Department agendas, and yet here they are doing exactly that.

Friendly reminder that in an October 2017 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, senators spoke with top legal and security officials for Facebook, Twitter and Google in a very disturbing way about the need for a Ministry of Truth to silence dissenting voices. Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii demanded that the companies adopt a “mission statement” declaring their commitment “to prevent the fomenting of discord.”

Think tank narrative manager and former FBI agent Clint Watts kicked it up even further, saying, Civil wars don’t start with gunshots, they start with words. America’s war with itself has already begun. We all must act now on the social media battlefield to quell information rebellions that can quickly lead to violent confrontations and easily transform us into the Divided States of America.

“Stopping the false information artillery barrage landing on social media users comes only when those outlets distributing bogus stories are silenced — silence the guns and the barrage will end,” Watts added.

These corporations are not separate from the US government in any meaningful way, and their behavior is therefore no better than the state censorship we commonly see US government officials decrying in the governments of non-allied nations. It’s arguably worse in some ways, because at least the Chinese know their government is censoring them.

In a corporatist system of government, where there is no meaningful separation between government power and corporate power, corporate censorship is state censorship. The US Constitution protects its citizenry from government censorship, but they remain completely unprotected from the brand of corporate censorship we’re seeing today which functions in precisely the same way. Whoever controls the narrative controls the world, and they’re using corporate censorship to control the narrative.

Our world’s fundamental problem is that the people calling the shots are omnicidal sociopaths, and the only force capable of stopping them, the collective will of the public, is too thoroughly propagandized to do so. The narratives are too tightly controlled, so the people don’t rise up against the oppressors who are driving them toward extinction via climate chaos or nuclear war. We won’t make it as a species if we can’t find a way to overcome this.

Instagram bans Tommy Robinson as social media companies purge far right

Posted by M. C. on August 7, 2018

Metro can’t even bring itself to mention “groomers”. It shifts the topic from Robinson’s reporting on child groomer rings to suppressing “far-right rhetoric”. The UK government ignored the groomers for a decade. The UK government wanted trial news suppressed. Instagram is more than willing to accommodate.

Another social media platform bends over for PC/social justice/snowflake apologists for immigrant violent crime.
