Social Justice

Walter Block on a scary concept.

Walter Block

Colleges and universities therefore ought cease and desist forthwith from labeling themselves in this manner, and from promoting all extant programs to this end. It is unseemly to foist upon its faculty and students any one point of view on these highly contentious issues. It would be just as improper to do so from a free enterprise, limited government private property rights perspective as it is from its present stance in the opposite direction.

On many university campuses, there is a push on to promote Social Justice. There are two ways to define “Social Justice.”

First, this concept may be defined substantively. Here, it is typically associated with left wing or socialist analyses, policies and prescriptions. For example, poverty is caused by unbridled capitalism; the solution is to heavily regulate markets, or ban them outright. Racism and sexism account for the relative plight of racial minorities and women; laws should be passed prohibiting their exercise. Greater reliance on government is required as the solution of all sorts of social problems. The planet is in great danger from environmental despoliation, due to an unjustified reliance on private property rights. Taxes are too low; they should be raised. Charity is an insult to the poor, who must obtain more revenues by right, not condescension. Diversity is the sine qua non of the fair society. Discrimination is one of the greatest evils to have ever beset mankind. Use of terminology such as “mankind” is sexist, and constitutes hate speech.

Secondly, Social Justice may be seen not as a particular viewpoint on such issues, but rather as a concern with studying them with no preconceived notions. In this perspective, no particular stance is taken on issues of poverty, capitalism, socialism, discrimination, government regulation of the economy, free enterprise, environmentalism, taxation, charity, diversity, etc. Rather, the only claim is that such topics are important for a liberal arts education, and that any institution of higher learning that ignores them does so at peril to its own mission.

So that we may be crystal clear on this distinction, a Social Justice advocate of the first variety might claim that businesses are per se improper, while one who pursued this undertaking in the second sense would content himself by merely asserting that the status of business is an important one to study.

Should a University dedicate itself to the promotion of Social Justice? It would be a disaster to do so in the first sense of this term, and it is unnecessary in the second. Let us consider each option in turn.

Left Wing Academic Chickens Roosting: Right Wing Political Pressures on Universities

Posted by M. C. on June 6, 2023

The lefties don’t much like it now that the shoe is on the other foot.

https://walterblock.substack.com/p/left-wing-academic-chickens-roosting?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

WALTER BLOCK

It takes little effort to demonstrate that university leftists have for lo these many years been brutalizing, canceling, and otherwise obstructing their academic colleagues who do not subscribe to DEI, cultural and economic Marxism, political correctness and all of their other shibboleths. The former have for decades been firing, not hiring in the first place, not promoting, imposing re-education camps, diversity statements, on the latter. All we need to do to establish these claims is to mention a few high-profile names (Peter Boghossian, Erika Christakis, Nicholas Christakis, Bruce Gilley, Charles Murray, Jordan Peterson, Amy Wax) who have been publicly victimized by such boorish and nasty behavior. We could also consult the publications of such researchers as Mitchell Langbert who demonstrates the vast professorial ideological imbalance which plague US universities. For literally hundreds of additional non “progressive” professors victimized by campus leftists, see David Acevedo (I am mentioned on this list).

Nor is it difficult to establish that conservative political forces have been negatively reacting to these incursions. Only one name be mentioned in this context: Ron DeSantis.

The reaction from the leftist bullies has been predictable. They feel hard done by; they maintain they have been unjustly dealt with. They are whining and crying to mommie.

For example, according to Andrew Hartman, a professor of history at Illinois State University “Complaints about social justice in academe go back decades. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the phrase ‘political correctness,’ which is akin to ‘woke,’ became widespread. But the difference between then and now is that in the 1990s, conservatives used public persuasion, not legislation, to bring awareness to what they saw as problems. The current effort in Florida to curb certain university activities by passing laws and issuing requests for DEI-related information is “ultimately, or at least potentially, extremely threatening to academic freedom in ways that nothing during the ‘80s and ‘90s was.”

In the view of Kristen A. Renn, a professor at Michigan State University and a specialist in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender college-student issues: “What I find most troubling is that DeSantis is putting out a blueprint for other governors and state legislatures, He’s doing these things in ways that anybody else can pick this up and do it.”

And stated Barrett J. Taylor, an associate professor of counseling and higher education at the University of North Texas: “But the extent of information — including employee names, salaries, and internal communications — that Florida’s politicians are seeking on DEI work does seem novel. That’s a different level of state intrusion into institutional independence.”

Here is the view of Francie Diep and Emma Pettit, journalists at the left-wing Chronicles of Higher Education: “The year before, the governor (De Santis) signed a law that permits students to record lectures for the purpose of filing a complaint. In recent interviews, Florida instructors referred to the law frequently, saying it has created an ‘atmosphere of surveillance’ in the classroom that makes it harder for them to discuss controversial ideas.”

Here is my reaction to all these lefties on campus. You don’t much like this, do you? This is a case of chickens coming home to roost.

New York Times just let the truth slip

Posted by M. C. on June 4, 2022

When Jane Fonda said Covid was “God’s gift to the Left,” she gave everything away.

In case you doubted it before, doubt no longer. There are people who will exploit, or indeed in some cases even create, crises they can take advantage of to bring about the kind of radical social changes they favor.

If you read, for instance, what so many left-wing intellectuals in the United States were saying about the urgency of entering World War I, much of it had to do with the opportunity it would provide to create precedents involving the domestic use of political power, so as to acclimate Americans to a more vigorous and interventionist government at home.

It’s all right there in the New Republic magazine from those years. “Why should not the war serve as a pretext to be used to foist innovations upon the country?” the magazine demanded to know.

Then, too, there are people who want artificially high gas prices, because they think those high prices can pave the way for their so-called green future.

It is time to consider the possibility that the people in charge aren’t fools who don’t know what they’re doing, and are causing suffering by accident. They know very well what they are doing.

Woods, you say, that’s too cynical.

But if it were just stupidity, wouldn’t they occasionally, if even just by accident, do something sensible that doesn’t hurt the average person?

Mere stupidity isn’t this consistent.

Now we get this from the New York Times, just yesterday, letting us know that in fact price inflation can have a beneficial effect because it will lead us to the kind of society they want:

“Inflation has the potential to drive welcome change for the planet if Americans think differently about the way they eat. Climate change has motivated some to eat less resource-intensive meat and more vegetables, grains and legumes, but this movement has not reached the scale necessary to bring needed change—yet.”

Who thinks like that?

“Inflation has the potential to drive welcome change”? Get bent.

One of the worst parts about price inflation, though, is that most Americans have no idea what causes it. Some think it’s because of greedy corporations (which doesn’t explain why the price inflation didn’t start three years ago — were those corporations less “greedy” then?). Or they’ve bought into the nonsense that it’s a sign of a strong economy. Or some people just have an inchoate sense that it’s natural for things to get gradually more expensive over time, as if this is some law of the universe.

To the contrary, before the Federal Reserve took over, the general trend was for things to get less expensive over time.

The more we can shine a light on the Fed, the better. It thrives in darkness.

So remember, coming up very soon is the world premiere of the Money 2022 docuseries — which features normal people, rather than the lizard creatures who rule us.

You can watch the whole series for free if you register in advance. After that, they start charging for it.

What we are supposed to do in the current circumstances is a darn good question, and this series seeks to answer it.

The company making it is full of friends of mine, and has featured me in their documentaries as well. They have to deal with Big Tech censorship, so they rely on friends like me to spread the word about their important work.

The Truth About Left-Wing Racial Politics – Aussie Nationalist Blog

Posted by M. C. on August 17, 2020

Yet as is often the case with non-white beneficiaries of Western altruism, Harris has offered little to nothing in the way of reciprocation.

Wrote Patrick Buchanan in The Death of the West,

It is in the nature of nations and religions, that they rule or are ruled.

When considering this principle, there is nothing new about the tribalism of Kamala Harris; it is straightforward to envision where things are headed next. As Harris and her type garner power–crude, unyielding forms of racial discrimination will develop against white Americans, in particular for Trump supporters and Christians.

https://aussienationalistblog.com/2020/08/18/the-truth-about-left-wing-racial-politics/

It came as little surprise last Wednesday, when Kamala Harris was named as Joe Biden’s vice president pick.

This was a patently token selection: Harris being a black women; her lacking the requisite political or real-life experience to be prepared for vice-presidential (and quite potentially) presidential duties.

That the left is intent on promoting members of allegedly victimised classes over those with merit, by now, is clear and trite to emphasise. What is more interesting to evaluate, is the background of Kamala Harris and its connection (or lack thereof) to her politics of racial grievance.

Harris was born in Oakland, California in 1964, the product of recent immigrants: an Indian mother and a Jamaican father. In this respect, Harris holds a distinct history to many American blacks. She was never personally subject to Jim Crow laws; or had any ancestors that were; or had any ancestors even geographically residing in the United States while they were still applied.

In plain terms, when it comes to what could be objectively seen as constituting American racism, neither Harris nor her ancestors were the victims of anything. To the contrary, as witnessed the fact of American and Indian living standards, Harris has amply benefited from being born into the United States.

Yet as is often the case with non-white beneficiaries of Western altruism, Harris has offered little to nothing in the way of reciprocation. In fact, she has a racial vendetta against white America, expressed in her presidential campaign kickoff speech from January 2019:

Let’s speak the truth that too many unarmed black men and women are killed in America. Too many black and brown Americans are locked up.

Additionally, Harris has spoken of the need for reparations, and has called American history “the scene of a crime.”

In her own life, Harris has only ever profited from white America; but as demonstrated above, she is animated by feelings of racial vengeance. The only way to make sense of this apparent contradiction, is to conclude that leftist identity politics comprises a power grab, having nothing to do with resolving actual instances of oppression or persecution. It is a power grab aimed at increasing the political, cultural and economic agency of non-white Americans–at the necessary expense of white Americans.

The time has come for President Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act and put down the lawless, left-wing insurrection against America – NaturalNews.com

Posted by M. C. on October 19, 2019

It is not safe in Minneapolis any longer for Trump supporters. Please stay away from the vicinity and do not come out with branded gear…

https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-10-11-president-trump-invoke-insurrection-act-lawless-left-wing.html

(Natural News) The lunatic, lawless Left is out of control. The corporate-run media has become a CIA propaganda front that ignores reality while fabricating fake stories to destroy America. The tech giants despise free speech for conservatives while demanding “equality” for transgenders. And left-wing governors and mayors are openly advocating Antifa-style lawlessness and violence in America, as long as that violence is directed at conservatives and Trump supporters.

(By the way, do you remember all the hype to push “Net Neutrality?” It was supposed to protect dissenting voices and diverse views on the ‘net. The tech giants pushed it aggressively, and the moment Trump got elected, those same evil tech companies like Google and Facebook then systematically silenced all conservative voices. The entire “Net Neutrality” push was a con job. They never believed in neutrality; only tyranny.)

Just last night, lunatic left-wing mobs violently attacked Trump supporters who were leaving the Trump rally in Minneapolis. Via Breitbart News:

Left-wing rioters attacked supporters of President Donald Trump leaving a rally in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Thursday evening — assaulting them in groups, setting fire to pro-Trump hats, and attacking the police.

Local Minneapolis Star-Tribune reporter Liz Sawyer noted there were several hundred rioters, and that some were singling out Trump supporters and surrounding them in groups before attacking them. Some also attacked police…

It’s time to stop the violence, the lunacy and the insurrection. PJ Media’s David Solway has written an outstanding article that makes the case. Via PJmedia.com:

Any decent and impartial observer can see that leftist and corporate America has come to resemble a cloacal bog of lies, corruption, slander, censorship, entitlements and violence, a veritable “swamp” as it has been aptly called. What commentator Diana Sitek writing in American Thinker calls “the entitlement to depravity embedded in the Left’s social justice dogma” is both massive and unrelenting. The media, the academy, the entertainment industry, Big Tech, the Democrat Party, and the “Deep State” are profoundly engaged in a networked alliance to overturn the results of a lawful election and subvert a legitimate and effective presidency. President Trump has vowed to “drain the swamp” but it is moot whether a single individual, regardless of the power of high office, with little in the way of institutional support — and despite his strength of character and resolve — can thwart what is nothing less than an ongoing political putsch.

Islands of Left-Wing Viciousness – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on July 5, 2017

https://lewrockwell.com/2017/07/walter-e-williams/islands-left-wing-viciousness/

Many university faculty members are hostile to free speech and open questioning of ideas. A large portion of today’s faculty and administrators were once the hippies of the 1960s, and many have contempt for the U.S. Constitution and the values of personal liberty. The primary blame for the incivility and downright stupidity we see on university campuses lies with the universities’ trustees.
Nasty talk like that makes me want it to be Superbowl time. I can tune in the Animal Planet and watch the puppies play all day long.
