What Kind of Man

Posted by M. C. on February 28, 2023

“Tell me what kind of man governs a People, you tell me, with much exactness, what the net sum-total of social worth in that People has been fort some time been.”

Thomas Carlyle, “Downing Street” from “Latter-Day Pamphlets”

It’s awkward but that is how they wrote back then. This why I could barely make it through Owen Wister’s “The Virginian”.

Dailywire Article-Elon Musk Launches New Effort To Fight Woke Artificial Intelligence

Posted by M. C. on February 28, 2023

“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it ‘Open’ AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft,” Musk tweeted. “Not what I intended at all.”

Elon Musk, chief executive officer of Tesla Inc., departs court in San Francisco, California, US, on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023. Investors suing Tesla and Musk argue that his August 2018 tweets about taking Tesla private with funding secured were indisputably false and cost them billions of dollars by spurring wild swings in Tesla's stock price.

Elon Musk has launched a new effort to combat woke artificial intelligence, something he considers to be one of the top threats facing mankind.

The Information reported that Musk has approached top “artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to ChatGPT,” the first AI tool to hit the mainstream.

The report said Musk believes that ChatGPT is an example of “training AI to be woke.” Musk is recruiting Igor Babuschkin, a top researcher who has worked at Alphabet’s DeepMind AI unit and at OpenAI, to help lead the effort.

Musk has repeatedly criticized ChatGPT and the company that it was created by, which he co-founded, for the direction it has gone.

“The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly,” Musk warned shortly after ChatGPT launched and people began noting numerous problems with the tool.

“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it ‘Open’ AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft,” Musk tweeted. “Not what I intended at all.”

The Antiwar Movement Roars Back to Life – Antiwar.com Original

Posted by M. C. on February 28, 2023

Rachel Maddow, who fed America a steady stream of “Russiagate” lies for the past six or so years, let loose with a slanderous blue streak about the Rage Against the War Machine rally. Literally everything Maddow said in her post-rally rant was objectively false and her mischaracterization of rally participants as “weird” was devious. She falsely claimed that the rally was full of “white supremacists,” “Proud Boys,” and “anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists.”

Anti-vaccine!!!

by Ron Paul

On February 19th, the National Mall in Washington, DC saw its largest antiwar rally in 20 years. The speakers list included four former US presidential candidates and a broad and diverse collection of antiwar activists from beyond the left and right.

The aptly-named “Rage Against War Machine” rally drew thousands of attendees, however many pro-war advocates eagerly pointed out that it did not match in size some of the larger rallies against the Iraq war 20 years ago.

To that I say, “who cares”? The US mainstream media engages in war propaganda non-stop, with the only exception being Fox News’ Tucker Carlson. So I think it’s a miracle anyone had the courage to travel to the heart of the war machine in Washington, DC to make their voices heard! We don’t need a majority to fight back – an educated and dedicated minority will do quite nicely. And we certainly had that at the rally!

As I sat in the green room waiting to speak, I had the opportunity to visit with former Democrat presidential candidates Tulsi Gabbard and Dennis Kucinich and former Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Political commentators Jimmy Dore and Chris Hedges were there, along with many leading and well-spoken libertarians. Everyone backstage carried the same message: we must put aside our differences to build a new, broad coalition against this war!

I believe the antiwar movement is starting to catch fire both at home and overseas. The DC rally was followed by much larger antiwar rallies in Paris, Berlin, London, and elsewhere.

Several recent polls, including by Pew and AP, show that American support for Ukraine is evaporating. Even in the EU, new polls show a public turning sharply against their governments’ support for the war. According to a recent Ipsos poll, less than half of Germans support continuing to send weapons to Ukraine. Change is in the air.

Most Front-Line Ukrainian Soldiers Killed Within ‘4 Hours’ | The Libertarian Institute

The US Fighting Russia to the last Ukrainian

by Kyle Anzalone

battle of bakhmut 2

A retired American Marine fighting in Ukraine told ABC News the frontlines are a “meat grinder” where soldiers survive an average of “four hours.”

Troy Offenbecker is fighting alongside Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region. Moscow and Kiev have been battling around Bakhmut for several months as Russia’s forces have slowly made gains around the city.

In January, Germany estimated Kiev was losing a “three-digit number” of soldiers daily fighting for Bakhmut. At that time, the White House believed President Volodymyr Zelensky was committing too many lives and resources to defend the city.

Offenbecker’s commentary suggests that the situation may be getting worse for Ukrainian soldiers. “It’s been pretty bad on the ground. A lot of casualties.” He assessed, “the life expectancy is around four hours on the frontline.”

He said the Russian attack on the city is not letting up and had turned into a “meat grinder.” “[The artillery] is nonstop.” Offenbecker explained the Russian forces are fighting around the clock. “[The Russians] have maybe run into a shortage of shells lately, but the past couple of weeks, it’s been nonstop. All day and night,” he told ABC.

“But That Newspaper is Dead”, by Ron Unz – The Unz Review

Posted by M. C. on February 28, 2023

My suspicion is that the supposed Covid biowarfare attack was a very tightly run black operation, with its details probably known only to the smallest possible circle of participants; and given the horrifying consequences for our own country and the world, I doubt that any of those individuals will ever come forward as whistle-blowers. But if some of them do, Seymour Hersh would surely be the journalist they would be most likely to contact, and it might be very fitting if his last major expose were to so closely parallel the one that originally launched his storied career more than a half-century earlier.

RON UNZ

A few days ago, the UN Security Council held hearings on the accusations by Seymour Hersh that the Biden Administration had illegally destroyed Europe’s $30 billion Nord Stream pipelines. Hersh is one of America’s most renowned journalists and the previous week he had revealed the exact details of the attack, an obvious act of war against Germany, our close NATO ally.

The story is arguably as big as anything in Hersh’s towering half-century career, but with very few exceptions his revelations and the UN session it prompted have been totally ignored by our entire mainstream media, so that only a sliver of the Western public may ever hear of those facts and recognize their importance. For example, our government’s recent shoot-down of several errant American weather balloons seems to have received at least 100x greater news coverage.

Even among well-educated, intelligent individuals, the overwhelming majority probably still draw their knowledge of the world primarily from mainstream sources and if an event is ignored or downplayed by these, its importance will be doubted.

But although our Western media almost entirely ignored these developments, the Security Council session on the destruction of some of Europe’s most important civilian energy infrastructure attracted testimony from leading American public figures.

Ray McGovern had spent 27 years as a CIA Analyst, rising to direct the Soviet Policy division, chairing the National Intelligence Estimates group during the Reagan Administration, and serving as the Presidential Briefer on intelligence matters. He explained that twenty years ago, the American government had used fraudulent claims of Saddam’s WMDs to justify our disastrous Iraq War, doing so with the assistance of our subservient media. And today, our media is supporting the extreme recklessness of our current government policy towards Russia and Ukraine, which risks a nuclear confrontation.

Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University spoke as well, emphasizing the enormously grave consequences of this unprecedented act of international terrorism, and the very limited number of nations that could have been responsible. He noted that Hersh has now provided a comprehensive account of the attacks and one that closely matches the very suspicious public statements made by President Joseph Biden and other senior officials in his administration regarding the need to eliminate the pipelines. Prof. Sachs is a figure of the highest possible international reputation and he used unusually strong language in speaking to the UN Security Council membership.

New Article on Major Free Speech Threat

Posted by M. C. on February 27, 2023

Many nations seem poised to abandon the core lesson of the Enlightenment: no human institution can or should be trusted to decree Absolute Truth and punish dissent from it

As we report, the implications for this law are serious and extend far beyond Brazil. Brazil is being used as a test case by both the EU and various sectors in the U.S. to see how far states can go in seizing new powers to censors the internet in the name of stopping what the state decrees is “fake news and disinformation.”

Glenn Greenwald

Two weeks ago, I wrote to you to inform you of several changes we had adopted with the primary purpose of creating more time for me to publish more written journalism and analysis, of the kind you have come to expect from my work at the Intercept and then at Substack. Launching our live nightly SYSTEM UPDATE program on Rumble has been very gratifying and a great success in terms of our ability to quickly build a large audience, but it left me with little time to work on the written journalism that I have always considered, and still do consider, to be the anchor of my work.

Those changes have indeed resulted in my having more time to write. We are happy to notify today of a new article we just published on a news story I regard as extremely important. Brazil, under its new government led President Lula da Silva, is poised to become the first nation in the democratic world to implement a law empowering the government to ban “fake news and disinformation,” and to punish those it claims are guilty of authoring and disseminating such “false” ideas.

As we report, the implications for this law are serious and extend far beyond Brazil. Brazil is being used as a test case by both the EU and various sectors in the U.S. to see how far states can go in seizing new powers to censors the internet in the name of stopping what the state decrees is “fake news and disinformation.”

The article is published here on our Locals platform. As was true for almost every article I wrote at Substack, it is free and publicly available to subscribers and non–subscribers alike. Your subscriptions is what enables us to make our journalism available to the widest possible audience, without having to hide it behind a paywall. There are exclusive benefits for Locals subscribers – including access to our twice-a-week interactive after-show, transcripts of each episode of our program in article form, and other community-based content – but we intend for my news articles and analysis to continue to be freely available to ensure the widest possible distribution and impact.

You can read the new article at this link.

Remember: Those who are paid Substack subscribers are entitled to free Locals membership. You simply go to our Locals page (here), enter the same email you used for your Substack membership, click “forgot password,” and Locals will then email you a password for full access.

For now, we hope you enjoy our new article, and we look forward to returning more or less to what had been our regular schedule of publishing new written reporting.

Dailywire Article-Erin Brockovich Torches Biden Over East Palestine Debacle: ‘You’re Not Gonna Gaslight Me!’

Posted by M. C. on February 27, 2023

So, so in the schools, so the children can’t drink the fountains, and then on private wells around here, they’ve got locks on them. So they obviously — aw, come on. Wha– if there’s no problem, you don’t need to lock up a drinking fountain. You don’t need to be aerating the system. And you can explain away all day long to me that nothing’s wrong. But I, I see what’s going on here,” she concluded. “You’re not gonna gaslight me.”

Just image East Palestines (or your towns) plight if they suffered a nuke strike in the much awaited dual war with China and Russia. I am from the government and am here to help.

By  Virginia Kruta

EDMOND, OK - FEBRUARY 23: Erin Brockovich speaks during an Oklahoma Earthquake Town Hall Meeting at the University of Central Oklahoma February 23, 2016 in Edmond, Oklahoma. The state is now the earthquake capital of the world and the quakes are believed to be caused by oil field waste water injections into the earth. In 1993, the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board began to restore abandoned oil well sites. Since the program's inception more than $90 million has been spent to restore more than 14,500 abandoned well sites. Officials report the old wells have leaked oil, natural gas and brine into the soil. (Photo by J Pat Carter/Getty Images)

Famed activist Erin Brockovich has joined the throng of people investigating the train derailment-turned environmental disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, and she said she believes President Joe Biden’s administration is hiding something from the American people.

Brockovich, who has also spoken to CNN and MSNBC about her experience interviewing the people who were directly affected by the derailment and subsequent fires and explosion, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson on Friday that Biden’s response to the disaster has fallen far short of what it should be. And to make matters worse, she said, the people there believe that the president has left them to fend for themselves.

“We’re pushing a month now and they still don’t have any answers. It’s very obvious something’s really gone wrong out here,” Brockovich began. “And I’ve been out here down on the ground and they’re really frustrated, why they don’t feel that their agencies or their administration cares about what’s happened to the community. So it is very apparent they are, are concerned and not being seen or heard.”

Carlson pressed Brockovich to elaborate, asking whether she believed there was specific information that the Biden administration was hiding from the people — and she seemed to confirm that she did.

“Yeah, there is. And I mean, it’s like, Oh my gosh, come on. Oh, we’re out here. What, 44,000 fish are dead? We’ve seen them. We’ve seen them out here today aerating the creeks. They’re removing stuff. That, the wellheads are locked. What’s up?” Brockovich continued, arguing that it was no different than coal miners keeping a “canary in the mine shaft” to determine whether the air was safe to breathe.

“Send the canary down there, it dies: Might not be good for humans. You have dead fish: might not be good for humans. You have dead animals: might not be good for humans. You’ve sent a horrible mixed message to this community. Drink the water. Don’t drink the water. Safe. Not safe,” she added. “It’s — It’s horribly confusing and extremely frustrating to them. And something actually has gone wrong here. And there’s information that has yet to come forward, and the story will continue to unfold.”

CIA Chief: Iran Not Resuming Nuclear Weapons Program – News From Antiwar.com

Posted by M. C. on February 27, 2023

In a CBS interview over the weekend, CIA Director William Burns offered an assessment which, coming from US officials, would be a huge admission and potentially of much consequence. Burns reported Iran is “not resuming” its nuclear weapons program, which it ended decades ago, and has made no decisions on even attempting to.

The opposite to what government has been telling US since “decades ago”.

by Jason Ditz

In a CBS interview over the weekend, CIA Director William Burns offered an assessment which, coming from US officials, would be a huge admission and potentially of much consequence. Burns reported Iran is “not resuming” its nuclear weapons program, which it ended decades ago, and has made no decisions on even attempting to.

The US has long been vague on whether or not Iran is really trying to make arms. Iran says they aren’t, and has ruled out ever doing so on religious grounds. Analysts have also been concluding for years that Iran is not actively trying to make atomic weapons.

Having the US spy chief make such a public admission should portend a policy shift back toward diplomacy with Iran. It may also lead to a backlash from nations like Israel and Saudi Arabia who want spurious allegations against Iran to continue being treated as impediments to such diplomacy.

Such nations accuse Iran of things left and right, and strongly prefer the US endorsing their accusations. Accusing Iran of nuclear arms development is the life blood of Israel’s aid demands, and now the US CIA chief is contradicting those allegations.

US ambiguity often depends on misinterpreting the facts of Iran’s civilian program, and Burns continues to struggle with facts, falsely claiming Iran is now enriching uranium to 84%.

In reality, Iran’s enrichment maxes out at 60%, and the production of a few 84% enriched particles was an accidental result of configuring enrichment centrifuges. Even there the production was well-short of weapons grade, and not a proliferation risk, so even being mistaken on that fact it was possible for the CIA to conclude that there is no active weapons program.
