Against Michelle Wu’s Anti-Market Real Estate Proposal

Posted by M. C. on December 23, 2023

“If Chairman Wu were in power when Henry Ford was ruining the blacksmith, horse training and saddle making industries, she would have taxed the latter and subsidized the former. How about when computers took out the typewriter, carbon paper, and correction fluid (Wite-Out) industries?”

Walter Block

Madame Chairman Michelle Wu, Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, has been supportive of offering a tax subsidy to landlords who convert their commercial real estate to residential units.

Why, pray tell, is she interfering with the free enterprise system (okay, okay, what little of it exists in Beantown) in this manner? Thanks to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), the demand for office space has declined precipitously. Business firms have found they can get the job done with at least some of their employees working from home, at least on a part-time basis. Thus, the lesser need for office space. This, of course, is a world-wide phenomenon, hardly limited to the United States, to Massachusetts, to Boston. But Madame Wu is taking the lead in this type of political response.

Talk about teaching grandma to suck eggs.

If Chairman Wu were in power when Henry Ford was ruining the blacksmith, horse training and saddle making industries, she would have taxed the latter and subsidized the former. How about when computers took out the typewriter, carbon paper and, correction fluid (Wite-Out) industries? This economic interventionist would undoubtedly have put her thumb on the scales once again, supporting the nerds and taxing their competitors. Then, there is the case of mobile phones supplanting, what, well, lots of stuff: cameras, telephones, flashlights, paper maps, etc. Again, this central planner would have rolled up her sleeves and helped this process along, in the precise direction it was moving anyway, without any of her help, thank you very much.

What is wrong with that? In each of these past cases, including the present one, she would have just been rendering the market more efficient. Helping it out, helping it along, as it were.

There are several problems here.

First, suppose that one of these days she guesses wrong about the movement of the market in the direction of consumer satisfaction. Then, she will have caused vast amounts of wealth to have been dissipated. But, you say, that so far she has predicted correctly. At least, as it now looks to most analysts, she is entirely correct on the need for conversion of commercial and industrial real estate to residential purposes.

Of course, it cannot be denied, entrepreneurs sometimes—alright, often—predict the economic future badly. The difference is, and this is crucially important, Madame Wu has no skin in the game.

‘Heartbreaking’ Scene on Boston Streets as Police Destroy Wheelchairs Belonging to Homeless Residents | Common Dreams News

Posted by M. C. on August 9, 2019

The destruction of the wheelchairs is only the latest incident involving the trashing of the possessions of homeless people in the operation.

#What did you do today dear# I stole wheelchairs from homeless people and crushed them.

It is Boston. It is what Progressives do. It is what militarized cops do. They can’t be human.

Police in Boston Tuesday night reportedly destroyed three wheelchairs belonging to homeless city residents in a garbage truck compactor as part of a crackdown targeting the city’s transient population.

“Operation Clean Sweep” began August 2 after a county corrections officer was allegedly struck during a fight involving a number of people on “Methadone Mile,” a stretch of the city near Massachusetts Ave. and Melnea Cass Boulevard where there are a number of clinics and treatment centers. The area has a high homeless population, many of whom have been the target of the operation in the five days and counting it has continued.

The destruction of the wheelchairs is only the latest incident involving the trashing of the possessions of homeless people in the operation.

One of the destroyed wheelchairs was reportedly confiscated from a man named Jarrod who was hit by a car last month.

“It was heartbreaking to speak with Jarrod, who lost not only his wheelchair, but everything he owns that he keeps in his backpack,” said homeless advocate Cassie Hurd.

Hurd told Boston Magazine that Jarrod’s wheelchair was taken after he left it “for a minute” in spite of pleas from his partner to police.

“He is not able to be mobile without it, and not having a home, nowhere to sit, nowhere to go, and was having pain,” said Hurd of Jarrod. “He couldn’t really balance or walk.”

A viral image of the wheelchairs being destroyed made its way across social media Wednesday, generating outrage.

The police behavior was “cartoon evil,” tweeted media reporter Adam Johnson, who also noted the largely unmentioned historical significance of the operation.

“Mass removing homeless people (e.g. human beings) and calling it ‘operation clean sweep’ (the obvious implication being said human beings are trash) is genocidal rhetoric and it’s disturbing no one in Boston government or media feels the need to point this out,” said Johnson.

Journalist Miles Howard questioned whether the images would have any effect on the future of the operation.

“The questions at the heart of #OperationCleanSweep are whether there’s dignity in being human (I believe there is) and whether government should honor that intrinsic dignity (I believe it should),” tweeted Howard. “[Boston Mayor Marty Walsh] has chosen to treat the homeless as subhuman trash. What do you think?”

Court Watch Massachusetts appealed to the better nature of Bostonians.

“Can we all agree that it is inhumane and cruel and a waste of resources to crush the wheelchairs of people who are living on the street after a car accident in a full body cast?” the group tweeted.

Left-wing cities going LAWLESS as Boston orders police to stop arresting criminals for breaking and entering, destruction of property or shoplifting – NaturalNews.com

Posted by M. C. on April 5, 2019

https://www.naturalnews.com/2019-04-02-left-wing-cities-going-lawless-as-boston-orders-police-to-stop-arresting-criminals.html

Leftist policies are reaching new levels of insanity in Massachusetts, as Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins pushes her highly contested “no-prosecute” list into action. The “list” gives a green light to a number of arrest-worthy offenses — including trespassing, shoplifting, disorderly conduct, and “wanton or malicious destruction of property.” In other words, local law enforcement is being directed by the district attorney to stand idly by while miscreants steal and destroy property. The directive from Rollins also orders police to refuse to cooperate with ICE in the arresting of illegal immigrants at the courthouse — no matter the severity of their crimes. What could go wrong?

It is no surprise this new “policy,” also known as the “Rollins Memo” has been met with substantial scrutiny. While Rollins may say her memo is about creating an “equal” justice system, the victims of these now-permissible crimes aren’t likely to feel they are being treated equally. But of course, that’s really the goal here, isn’t it? No one cares about the shopkeepers and homeowners that are victimized. Under far-left dogma, criminals are the true victims, we’re just too “hateful” to see it. This is doublethink at its finest…

“This is a roadmap to a criminal justice system that works equally for everyone, based on research, data, and input from across the spectrum of stakeholders,”  Rollins said of her memo in a recent press release.

Surely anyone who is a victim of shoplifting, larceny or property destruction would disagree that this “system” works for “everyone.”

A former police officer told the Boston Herald, ““If everybody knows they’re going to get a pass, decorum will go out the window. These are basic, quality-of-life issues. It’s the absolute antithesis of broken windows.”

The “broken windows” theory posits that toughening up on smaller crimes helps prevent more serious offenses, the Herald explains.

Rafael Mangual, a criminal justice expert at the right-leaning Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, agrees that softening up on “small” offenses will lead to bigger problems.

“Criminals are going to respond to incentives. They’ll do more of something if they won’t get in trouble for it,” Mangual said.

“It’s a recipe for a public safety disaster. It strikes me as troubling and I think it should trouble the whole city,” he stated further…

Proposed Boston law would REQUIRE doctors to interrogate patients about gun ownership … Medicine now becomes Big Brother

Posted by M. C. on January 26, 2019

Chappaquiddick Ted is looking up and loving this.

http://www.liberty.news/2019-01-17-proposed-boston-law-would-require-doctors-to-interrogate-patients-about-gun-ownership.html

By

Boston City Mayor Martin J. Walsh will be pushing legislation on Beacon Hill this year which would require doctors to interrogate patients about the presence of firearms in their homes. The legislation is being promoted as a way for healthcare providers to “play a larger role in addressing gun violence” by spotting the early warning signs of suicide and domestic violence.

Of course, this type of interrogation would be a massive violation of patient privacy and has conservatives in an uproar. Furthermore, mandating doctors to reduce gun violence is ironic considering how many of the mass shootings and other forms of gun violence that Americans have been subjected to in recent years are the direct result of the mind-altering drugs prescribed by these very same healthcare providers.

Doctors become Big Brother

Boston officials insist that the proposed bill will not turn doctors into amateur sleuths and that gun ownership will not become part of official patient medical records…

Is this the same Boston government that forced its way into homes at gunpoint after the marathon Bombing? Be seeing you

The Rutherford Institute :: From Boston to Ferguson to Charlottesville: The Evolution of a Police State Lockdown |

Posted by M. C. on August 14, 2018

Remember, a police state does not come about overnight.

It starts small, perhaps with a revenue-generating red light camera at an intersection.

When that is implemented without opposition, perhaps next will be surveillance cameras on public streets. License plate readers on police cruisers. More police officers on the beat. Free military equipment from the federal government. Free speech zones and zero tolerance policies and curfews. SWAT team raids. Drones flying overhead. City-wide lockdowns.

No matter how it starts, however, it always ends the same.

https://www.rutherford.org/publications_resources/john_whiteheads_commentary/from_boston_to_ferguson_to_charlottesville_the_evolution_of_a_police_state_lockdown

By John W. Whitehead

“It takes a remarkable force to keep nearly a million people quietly indoors for an entire day, home from work and school, from neighborhood errands and out-of-town travel. It takes a remarkable force to keep businesses closed and cars off the road, to keep playgrounds empty and porches unused across a densely populated place 125 square miles in size. This happened … not because armed officers went door-to-door, or imposed a curfew, or threatened martial law. All around the region, for 13 hours, people locked up their businesses and ‘sheltered in place’ out of a kind of collective will. The force that kept them there wasn’t external – there was virtually no active enforcement across the city of the governor’s plea that people stay indoors. Rather, the pressure was an internal one – expressed as concern, or helpfulness, or in some cases, fear – felt in thousands of individual homes.”—Journalist Emily Badger, “The Psychology of a Citywide Lockdown”

It has become way too easy to lockdown this nation. Read the rest of this entry »
