The Welfare State is Tearing Sweden Apart | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on May 28, 2019

Forced associations, such as outright invasion and conquest, will fuel embitterment and conflicts along cultural/ethnic lines and maybe even usher in the rebirth of old conflicts. The welfare state is another type of attack vector in the a matrix of forced associations. It merely has different particular properties. The end result is the same: people that do not wish to tango are forced to jot each other down for the next dance.

https://mises.org/wire/welfare-state-tearing-sweden-apart

Swedes do not toil under a Communist yoke. We are thankfully a market oriented society, and particularly in rural areas, Swedes are ruggedly individualistic and responsible citizens. But we do have an enormous welfare state with which to contend — and it poisons our nation much in the same manner that full blown communism would; if perhaps not to the same degree. Doubtlessly; it sets the stage for some rather dystopian developments, both in terms of its steady consumption of productive capabilities — but also in its toxic effects on our culture. On top of this, Sweden has accepted a considerable amount of immigrants (to put it mildly) from cultures that differ wildly from the Swedish. In this text I will take a look at the welfare state through the prism of Sweden’s current multicultural challenge.

First and foremost, is multiculturalism a good thing? When multiculturalism emerges through voluntary interactions it is apparently valuable — otherwise it would not occur in a free society as it so often does. Again: in the marketplace there is, over time, the beautiful possibility that the identity of the tribe expands by including, assimilating and adapting to previously unknown things. Adaptation and cultural appropriation by means of voluntary associations cannot be a bad thing! But in such a situation; isn’t multiculturalism a misnomer? I would rather call it an emergent convergence towards a shared culture, in a pace that participants set. All in all: a desirable thing, especially compared to the alternatives.

Forced multiculturalism, on the other hand, increases polarisation and tribalism along the most basic, and most easily recognised dividing lines. In times of flux; easily distinguishable traits tend to become elevated and adored, uplifted to a place of high honour. They become a substitute for truly shared cultural values and norms, which under healthy circumstances are necessary for cooperation. In times of rapid and involuntary change; they become a superficial false bulwark against the unknown. Instead of engaging in market opportunities across divides, we tend to spend time fortifying our positions. Craving security, we start leaning towards the totalitarianism of simplistic purism.

Spontaneously emergent cultural change through win-win situations on the one hand, and forced associations on the other, are two radically different ways in which societies evolve. These mechanics often overlap in history. In any given situation it may be hard to untangle which has primacy.

When a welfare state offers upkeep and support to large quantities of people from cultures that differ enormously from the predominant culture, despite the wishes of the current residents, we have a clear cut case of forced association. It’s a powderkeg that inevitably will get packed with resentment. People who would like nothing better than for the whole thing to blow up will inevitably start to congregate, with torches at the ready. Cultural homogeneity to some degree smooths over and props up the inherent fault lines that ripple underneath any redistributive scheme, while cultural heterogeneity rapidly exposes fissures. Why is this exactly?… Read the rest of this entry »

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: The Holiday Oddly Called “Labor Day”

Posted by M. C. on September 3, 2018

Labor is a necessary part of the equation and yes, unions were started for a reason but…
What advances man beyond the stage of a land-labor existence is when capital and entrepreneurship are added to the equation especially when capitalists and entrepreneurs are allowed to operate freely in a complete laissez-faire environment.

In other words – It takes a village.

Just try not to think where the phrase came from.

You have to give it to socialists, lefties and interventionists in general, they are pretty slick when it comes to naming key elements of their movement.

Take for example the word socialism, what the hell exactly is social about socialism?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary includes in its definition of social:

marked by or passed in pleasant companionship with friends or associates

living and breeding in more or less organized communities especially for the purposes of cooperation and mutual benefit

None of this has anything to do with socialism. Socialism is about authoritarianism. The control of some over others. It is not about mutual benefit. It is about required action determined by authorities, backed up by force—since it is so distant from mutual benefit. If it was about mutual benefit, coercion wouldn’t be involved.

Socialism is many things but it is not “pleasant companionship” if the way you desire to act is in conflict with socialist leaders’ demands.

Then, of course, there is the word, progressive, used by interventionists who favor putting limitations on free markets and the accompanying advances. It is in fact regressive.

This brings me to today’s holiday here in the United States and Canada, Labor Day, which was created by anti-labor group leaders, that is, union leaders… Read the rest of this entry »

The left loses its cool

Like their antifa brothers..sisters..whatever you are supposed to call them, they are 10 tens worse than the people they are attacking.

Two senior Trump administration officials were heckled at restaurants. A third was denied service. Florida GOP Attorney General Pam Bondi required a police escort away from a movie about Mister Rogers after activists yelled at her in Tampa — where two other Republican lawmakers say they were also politically harassed last week, one of them with her kids in tow.

In the Donald Trump era, the left is as aggressively confrontational as anyone can remember… Read the rest of this entry »

The Progressive State of America – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on August 4, 2017

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2017/08/james-ostrowski/progressive-state-america/

The progressive left is blathering about a living wage.  There are numerous fallacies at play here.  Suffice it to say that, by and large, your wages are determined by the customers who buy the goods and services you help produce.  If you work at a fast-food place and decry your wages, don’t blame the “greedy” employer; blame the “greedy” customers for not wanting to pay more for that burger and fries.  NBA owners are not less greedy than fast-food restaurant owners.  Rather, they have customers who place a higher value on the jump shot than on fast food.  Read the rest of this entry »

Washington Warmongers Make 11th Hour Attempt at War With Russia

Posted by M. C. on December 30, 2016

I voted for Trump expressly to prevent WW III. Looks like Barry is intent on starting it before he leaves the White House (has anyone complained about it being the “white” house?). Between that and his ministry of truth Obama is destroying what he has until now left standing. Obama the human drone.

At least what it takes to be a progressive hasn’t changed.

Bernie, Hillary and That Redistribution Thing

Posted by M. C. on May 27, 2016

Democrats like Obama are in favor of “that redistribution thing”.  Theft of your hard-earned money via taxation then giving it to someone who did not earn it.  Like warfare/welfare recipients and Hamid Kharzai (in shrink wrapped pallets).

What is the difference between the above and Bernie’s excess superdelegate votes being redistributed to Killary?  Why is the Bern complaining?  Democrats are just following the progressive plan.

We reap what we sow.

Be seeing you

Minimum Wage – The Gift That Keeps On Giving.

Posted by M. C. on November 22, 2014

Early 20th century Progressives and eugenicists were concerned about the quality of life. Mostly theirs. The so-called “inferior” and “low wage” races at that time were the Irish, Eastern Europeans, Italians, blacks and Chinese. Their willingness to work for less and for longer hours combined with high birth rates raised fear in WASP circles. Progressive pioneer Theodore Roosevelt coined a term for allowing this to continue – “Race Suicide”. Read the rest of this entry »

Public Broadcasting – A Spigot For It’s Progressive Supporters

Posted by M. C. on November 27, 2013

Personal research I did long ago indicated to me that the many “Foundations” that fund public broadcasting are Progressive and anti-second amendment.

I believe in the 1990s there was a week-long NPR series dedicated to anti-gun propaganda.   I immediately gave up contributing to my local station.  I have not seen any general improvements in the intervening years.

Now we have the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a name familiar to public media viewers, funding Families USA to the tune of $1.1Million.  Families USA is connected with the Obama Administration, The Herndon Alliance and Enroll USA, the groups promoting Obamacare enrollment.  See here. Rebuttal to Mr. Brian Pitzer’s letter criticizing my advocating the succession of public funding for Amtrak

Posted by M. C. on June 16, 2013

See the letter here.

Three things immediately come to mind:

-The Constitution does not allow nor did the founding fathers intend for the government to be in business.

-All of my working life I have heard from contractors it costs the government twice as much to do a project as the private sector.

-Governments with printing presses don’t worry about profit and loss statements.

Crony capitalism did not start in the 21st century. Railroads have always benefited from the largess of the government, particularly during the Lincoln administration and later. Have you ever thought how all those rights-of-way were paid for and how the owners were “persuaded” to sell?

There were numerable reasons for rail’s decline in the twentieth century. The depression (the Fed’s first major accomplishment), government regulation, railroad labor unions (Amtrak currently has to deal with a dozen or so unions), the emergence of cars and air travel, ICC’s inept rate setting and heavy government subsidy of highways and airlines. Government is a major source of its own problems.

To address Mr. Pitzer:

I am glad gasoline taxes initially paid for Eisenhower’s highway project. This must be the only government project where only the intended user fully paid for what they were using. As Mr. Pitzer commented, that is no longer the case as costs have sky rocketed. Remember, government projects cost twice as much. The Highway Trust Fund may get $53B compared to $1.4B for Amtrak but I am guessing there are more than 38 times more automobile passenger miles travelled.

The figures I see tell me the average Amtrak ticket is subsidized by $45. These are Federal subsidies we are talking about. Many states also subsidize Amtrak, PA included. These figures aren’t addressed in this discussion.

Yes, airlines are in a mess also. Where else but in a government project would you have federal, state and county government give US Air a billion dollar airport in Pittsburgh and allow US Air to walk away leaving a $62M annual mortgage? A deal crooked as a dog’s hind leg. Read the rest of this entry »
