Election Interference: Google Purges Breitbart from Search Results

Google Just Killed All Search Traffic to Breitbart for Joe Biden and Joe Biden-Related Searches

Google has stated its intention clearly: to make sure the 2016 election of President Trump was a “blip” in history. Sure enough, with less than five months before the election, Google is manipulating election-related search results.

by Allum Bokhari

A few days after the 2016 election, at an internal meeting later leaked to Breitbart News, top Google executives, including Sundar Pichai, Sergey Brin, and Kent Walker, lamented President Trump’s victory, comparing Trump voters to “extremists” and discussing their desire to make Trump’s election and the populist movement a “blip” in history.

True to their word, four years later, Google is deliberately working to interfere with the reelection of Trump in 2020.

There are several ways in which Google is interfering in the 2020 election, but this article will focus primarily on one of them: political search bias.

Google Has Been Purging Breitbart Content from Search Results Since the 2016 Election

Search visibility is a key industry measure of how findable a publisher’s content is in Google search. New data shows that Google has suppressed Breitbart’s search visibility by 99.7 percent since 2016.

On April 4, 2016, Breitbart ranked in the top ten search positions (i.e., on the first page of Google search results) for 355 key search terms; but now, as of July 20, 2020, Breitbart ranks in the top ten search positions for only one search term. And, on April 4, 2016, Breitbart ranked in the top 100 search positions for 16,820 key search terms; but now, as of July 20, 2020, Breitbart ranks in the top ten search positions for only 55 search terms.

Moreover, organic Google search traffic to Breitbart (measured by unique visitors) is down 63 percent when comparing the first half of 2016 with the first half of 2020.

The following chart shows the visibility of Breitbart content in the Google search engine since 2011. It shows that Google has nearly eliminated Breitbart content from its search results.

The SISTRIX Visibility Index ranks a website’s visibility in Google by looking at its ranking in a million search terms.

A close-up of the visibility decline following Google’s May 2020 core update.

This foregoing graph also shows three major drops in Breitbart’s search visibility (these drops are highlighted by the bright red lines). The first drop took place shortly after (and inferentially in response to) the 2016 election. The second took place in July of 2019. The third took place in May of this year, after which (1) unless a user types “Breitbart” into the search bar (and even then), they are highly unlikely to get any Breitbart content search results, and (2) Breitbart search results for “Joe Biden” and other Biden-related search terms have gone to zero. Even if you specifically search for Breitbart News headlines, you are unlikely to find them in Google search.

Google Just Killed All Search Traffic to Breitbart for Joe Biden and Joe Biden-Related Searches

After Google’s May core search update on or about May 5, 2020, Google search impressions and search traffic to Breitbart for “Joe Biden” and other Biden-related search terms has gone to zero. Zero. The following graph clearly illustrates the foregoing.

On May 1, Google searches for “Joe Biden” generated approximately 30,000 impressions (views, used as a metric for advertisers) for Breitbart links. After May 5, both impressions and clicks went to zero.

Breitbart News spoke to an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expert, a 25-year industry veteran, whose job consists of analyzing traffic data from Google’s own website performance portal, Google Search Console.

The expert, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had never seen anything like this graph — and that it indicates highly probable manipulation on the part of Google.

“I’ve never experienced such a wholesale removal of rank and visibility on specific concepts on a site as I have seen being applied to Breitbart,” said the expert. “Removal is the key, not dropping in rank, which would be an organic devaluing. These ranks are just simply gone, overnight, while other topics have been untouched.”

“The sheer fact that there are thousands of pages of Breitbart content that reference Biden that were ranking before May 6, that now have no rank or impressions on search is a sign of manipulation, not algorithmic devaluing.”

A longer view: Google search traffic to Breitbart News from the search term “Joe Biden” from July 2019 to the present. A regular heartbeat followed by a flatline as the election grows closer.

The Percentage of Traffic to Breitbart from Google Search (9%) Is Just a Fraction of the Average Publisher’s (30-50%); Expert Believes Breitbart Being Blacklisted

Dr. Robert Epstein, a psychologist and former Hillary Clinton supporter who has spent the last half-decade studying the effects of search engine bias on voters, said he believes Breitbart News is currently on one of Google’s blacklists, a topic on which he has written extensively.

“For news websites large and small, Google — in combination with its YouTube offshoot — typically drives between 30 and 50 percent of the traffic to those sites,” Dr. Epstein told Breitbart News via email. “For the New York Times, the percentage is currently 39.3%. At the moment, Google is responsible for just 9 percent of Breitbart’s traffic, and YouTube is sending a negligible amount, if any.  Given the size of Breitbart’s audience, this suggests to me that Breitbart is listed on one or more of Google’s blacklists.”

“Those are the lists that Google denies having — even under oath in Congressional hearings — even though two of those blacklists were leaked from the company last year by whistleblower Zach Vorhies.”

“How many blacklists they actually maintain is unknown, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a hundred or more,” continued Epstein.

Dr. Epstein recently told Breitbart News’s Alex Marlow that Google is likely to shift ten percent of voters away from Trump to fulfill its executives’ stated goal of avoiding a repeat of 2016.

The psychologist has previously explained how Google’s search bias can affect undecided voters by offering them selective information about political candidates. This is because voters are not inclined to suspect search results of bias in the same way that they might suspect a CNN or New York Times report to be biased.

In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last year, Epstein warned lawmakers that big tech could influence an extraordinary number of voters without any trace.

“In 2020 — if all these [big tech] companies are supporting the same candidate — there are 15 million votes on the line that can be shifted without people’s knowledge, and without leaving a paper trail for authorities to trace.”

In a comment to Breitbart News, a Google spokeswoman denied allegations of political bias.

“There is no validity whatsoever to these allegations of political bias,” said the spokeswoman. “Our systems do not take political ideology into account, and we go to extraordinary lengths to build our products for everyone in an apolitical way. Anyone can easily cherry-pick a range of conservative, progressive or non-political sites that have seen traffic changes over time. The improvements we make to Search undergo a rigorous testing process and are done to provide helpful information for the billions of queries we get every day.”

Google Search Rankings Suggest More Wholesale Suppression of Conservative Publishers

Breitbart News isn’t the only conservative news site that has an unusually low position in Google’s search rankings. Alexa data shows that the percentage of traffic to conservative websites that come from Google is far lower than that of corporate media sites.

Percentages of website traffic from Google, via Alexa web rankings. Red = media sources with conservative or libertarian-leaning editorial stances. Data is a six-month average as of July 7, 2020.

Eight of the ten lowest-ranked sites (Breitbart News, Fox News, The Daily Caller, The Blaze, Reason, The Federalist, The Daily Wire, the Washington Examiner) in the chart above are conservative.

Meanwhile, all ten of the top-ranked sites, with the arguable exception of, are from the corporate, liberal-leaning, or leftist media. Far-left is placed third.

The highest-ranking conservative-leaning news publishers — the New York Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the British Daily Mail are all newspapers and part of the media establishment and are relatively centrist. Yet even they are far behind leftist outlets like Vox and the Guardian in Google traffic. The top online-only conservative outlets — Breitbart News, The Daily Caller, and The Blaze — are all near the bottom.

Last week, several conservatives on social media recently noticed that their articles were not appearing at all in Google search. Breitbart News was similarly affected. Google claimed to have investigated the issue, which the company has attributed to an error, and conservative journalists and websites have reported their search results returning. What last week’s incident shows is Google’s incredible power to control what people do and do not see with the flick of a switch.

But the data in this article shows that Google’s manipulation of search results, and its systematic undermining of conservative media, has been far more long-running and pervasive than this one incident.

Google has stated its intention clearly: to make sure the 2016 election of President Trump was a “blip” in history. Sure enough, with less than five months before the election, Google is manipulating election-related search results. The scope and audacity (and hubris) make any alleged foreign interference in the 2016 election pale by comparison. And, it will surely warrant an even greater post-election congressional scrutiny. It will greatly strengthen the contention of Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and of Sens. Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), that search result manipulation ought to be a major subject of the Department of Justice’s antitrust investigation into Google. Not surprisingly, when recently asked about political search bias, Vice President Pence told Breitbart News that “we’re going to watch it closely.”

Silver Lining: Corona Communism Helps You Lose Weight – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on April 6, 2020

Venezuela too has a weight loss plan that has resulted from the once prosperous country’s own experiment with communism. Venezuelans lost 19 lbs in 2016.

The intelligentsia, Neil Ferguson among them, has proposed an 18-month quarantine that is being rolled out to the public a few weeks at a time, as a temporary measure. You’re a damn fool if you think government will allow life to return to normal at the 18-month mark after they’ve dealt with the problem at hand.

After proposing several paths, the paper concludes with: “We emphasise that it is not at all certain that suppression will succeed long term; no public health intervention with such disruptive effects on society has been previously attempted for such a long duration of time. How populations and societies will respond remains unclear.”

An often overlooked detail about communism is how much more slender the people are.

The Cuban government to this day offers their people a weight loss plan.

It’s a mandatory plan that comes from preventing a functioning marketplace from working. The weight loss plan got more restrictive for a few years after the Soviet Union crumbled and stopped propping up Cuba. People went hungry. It got worse again after even petroleum-rich benefactor Venezuela fell apart at the hands of leaders with communist ideas.

Venezuela too has a weight loss plan that has resulted from the once prosperous country’s own experiment with communism. Venezuelans lost 19 lbs in 2016.

Then there is the horrific Holodomor, in which proud farmers in the USSR said they wouldn’t be subjected to the silly communist ideas from the flakey ne’er-do-wells  who led the putsch a decade earlier. Entire villages were declared excluded from the economy of the USSR and possession of a single grain of wheat could be punishable by death. Far worse than Cuba or Venezuela, those Ukrainian farmers living under communism grew so slender that they just disappeared into the ground. How many millions of men, women, and children died in the Holodomor is a subject for debate by historians. This took place in the breadbasket of Europe.

The perennially chubby Mao called his Chinese diet plan “The Great Leap Forward.” Again, exactly how many tens-of-millions died because of the forceful destruction of functioning markets and the politicization of food under Mao’s communist ideas is a matter for the historians. The number was too high.

Looking to pay homage to his neighbor’s efforts to encourage weight loss, Pol Pot called his diet plan “The Super Great Leap Forward.” Years of sheer human misery followed for millions of Cambodians. . Echoing Stalin, who would kill for a grain of wheat, or Mao, who would kill for a potato, Pol Pot’s government of Democratic Kampuchea stated “Hands off the people’s property! Not a single grain of rice, a single chilli, a single needle!”

Leaving individuals to their own devices allows the world to work pretty darn well. Central planners tend to poison virtually anything that they touch. The more powerful the central planner, the more toxic their touch. The more vital the industry they touch, the more toxic their touch. This lesson has been taught repeatedly throughout history and often requires use of arms by the more down-to-earth common folk for the intelligentsia and central planners to knock it off.

Somehow, America, the nation of immigrants, has not taken the time to learn the horrors that their ancestors escaped from. These horrors took place at the hands of central planners, and Americans have increasingly turned their country over to central planners.

Not only is the centrally planned health system unequipped to handle shock when we most need it to – further, predictable evidence that central planners should not be trusted with a health system – but now the central planners are being given control over virtually the entire economy in de facto martial law declarations now affecting many of the states.

America has received a 30-day free trial of communism. Recent announcements indicate it is being extended to a 60-day free trial.

So far I’m hearing rave reviews from some of the people I encounter throughout my day

“Thank goodness we’re safe,”

“I exercise a lot more,”

“I get to spend more time with my family,” and

“Look at the silver lining: at least it’s a chance to lose weight.” These are just some of the comments I’ve heard in the last 19 days of the shelter-in-place order. The silver lining is not an indication of how humans want to act, it’s a behavior under the most artificial and restrictive circumstances.

People do not want to lose weight. Their behavior when left to themselves indicates what they want to do. Homespun wisdom taught that to many of us in the phrase “You don’t judge a person based on what they say, you judge a person based on what they do.” Needing a near total shutdown of an economy to find the time and opportunity to exercise and lose weight is a certain indication that one cares very little about weight loss.

Forgive what may appear as pessimism but there is no silver lining to consider.

In fact, you’d have to be a real a-hole at 10 a.m. on 9/11/2001 to say “look at the silver lining.”

The only reason those people aren’t self-aware of their a-hole status is that they don’t seem to see that it is only 10 a.m. on a “day” that will turn out to be a lot worse for America than that horrible 9/11 was.

There is no silver lining apparent to me in the tremendous human misery that has been brought to this world in the name of communism.

The effect of corona communism will be more death, more economic damage, more loss of life than 9/11.

And some may call it pessimism because I’m not looking for the sick, complacent silver lining of the problem at hand, a problem that is said to be “out of our control.”

If we don’t take it into our control, they’ll keep extending our free trial of communism.

Look. It say so right here.

The March 16, 2020 Neil Ferguson, Imperial College paper is cited by leaders globally as support for why the extreme lockdowns are good (which Ferguson doesn’t really say). What Ferguson et al., does say is that the 18-month quarantines that he proposes must be welcomed by the quarantined population for them to last.

After proposing several paths, the paper concludes with: “We emphasise that it is not at all certain that suppression will succeed long term; no public health intervention with such disruptive effects on society has been previously attempted for such a long duration of time. How populations and societies will respond remains unclear.”

You heard it there from the most beloved expert of the moment: No one knows how people will respond, nothing like this has been tried, no one knows how long people will put up with it for.

It’s practically an invitation to revolt against the awful idea.

Do everything in your life to poo poo this idea.

•Get your church opened, especially on Easter as Becky Akers says – April 12, 2020. If your cowardly pastor can’t be bothered to let ten people sit social distanced from each other for an Easter Sunday service behind closed and locked doors fearful of the authorities like the early Christians did, the man’s a coward. Your suggestion and insistence might help him be a little more courageous.

•Practice civil disobedience. If you need some inspiration, American tax protestor Henry David Thoreau outlined the path of the American rebel so thoughtfully in his essay “Resistance to Civil Government.”

•Go outside as much as you can, especially where there is a shelter-in-place order. If you think someone might bug you – carry an apple with you in a shopping bag – to prove that you have made an essential trip to the store. That is the civil disobedience Italians have started engaging in.

•If you have something to say, get a bullhorn or a soap box and just start talking anywhere anyone will listen.

Many people disagree with what’s happening – government and the rest of us – but need some courage to do the right thing.

•Open your business. David Hathaway offers a reminder on what an “essential service” is, a category that many businesses fall into.

•Perhaps the most freeing civil disobedience is to psychologically refuse quarantine, government, and CNN as your only salvations and to take the attitude that you will reject their fear and take your own health and wellbeing into your own hands as Bill Sardi asks you to do.

•Turn on your camera and record what you see that doesn’t fit the narrative.

•Read widely. Find the narrative. Help others identify the narrative.

•Push the boundaries. Exceed the boundaries. Demand to live your life.

This is 9/11 2.0 in front of us. The thousands who died on 9/11 and the billions in damage were nothing compared to the governmental response.

Since 9/11, millions have died as a result of the government response. There has been countless trillions of damage. Those people who died that day could have died for a purpose. They could have died in a relatively free society and taught us a lesson to live life bravely and to face death bravely just as many did on that day, to keep society even more free, and to get ourselves out of the affairs of others in all these backwaters. That could have been a lesson brought forth from an introspective examination of that day. They could have genuinely been martyrs for freedom.

That’s not what happened though. Many Americans didn’t let them become martyrs for freedom. Those deaths were made meaningless. Those deaths didn’t seem to cause a moment of hesitation to those who would destroy some of those freedoms that make the American way of life so unique. Those who died on 9/11 were conveniently used to further destroy America, and to wear away at those freedoms that have made America rather unique in the world. In their death they were turned into enemies of freedom, support for the authoritarian.

And today, we are faced with the prospect of countless more meaningless deaths. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The tiny number of men and women who die today over-and-above those who die on a regular day in America could just be part of what happens in a free society when people go through with their lives day-to-day. People die. Outbreaks occur. It doesn’t mean we should make that loss of life as impactful on the world as possible, and as harmful to as many people as possible. Death is part of life.

Some die in workplace accidents, some die in car accidents, some die from lifestyle diseases, some die innocently, some die from allergies, some die of heart attacks. That’s always been part of the American compact. You live your life the way you see fit and you deal with the consequences. We don’t follow it perfectly, but that’s mostly been the way the American compact works, and it’s mostly been supported by Americans.

Today is different. Today, the American compact is being abandoned in the name of illusory protection from a virus, protection that government can’t offer.

Presented with the options “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” American officials have suggested that a tiny fraction of lives can be prolonged by torching the American compact so that America looks a lot more like authoritarian China going forward. What an awful trade off.

That’s what these deaths are being used for. Those who died of Covid-19 are conveniently being used to make America look a lot more like China. To do away with the hard-earned recognition of the individual, and to do so in such a blinding, fear-filled, propaganda-fueled moment is such a waste of human achievement.

We’ve been offered our 30-day free trial of communism. The 60-day free trial has been announced. And the 18-month free trial is being planned. There’s little hope of turning back from this once we’ve followed much longer down this path.

That path is just wrongheaded. And needs those who know better to put an end to it. Or else, it will never end.

If not us, who? If not now, when?

Be seeing you

Of Two Minds – Welcome to the USSR: the United States of Suppression and Repression

Posted by M. C. on October 24, 2019

Charles Hugh Smith

We’re all against “fake news,” right? Until your content is deemed “fake news” in a “fake news” indictment without any evidence, trial or recourse.

When propaganda is cleverly engineered, people don’t even recognize it as propaganda: welcome to the USSR, the United States of Suppression and Repression. The propaganda in the U.S. has reached such a high state that the majority of people accept it as “pravda” (truth), even as their limbic system’s BS detector is sensing there is a great disturbance in the Force.

Inflation is a good example. The official (i.e. propaganda) inflation rate is increasingly detached from the real-world declines in the purchasing power of the bottom 80%, yet the jabbering talking heads on TV repeat the “low inflation” story with such conviction that the dissonance between the “official narrative” and the real world must be “our fault”–a classic technique of brainwashing.

To give some examples: healthcare is over 18% of the nation’s GDP, yet it makes up only 8.7% of the Consumer price Index. Hundreds of thousands of families have to declare bankruptcy as a result of crushing healthcare bills, but on the CPI components chart, it’s a tiny little sliver just a bit more than recreation (5.7%).

Then there’s education, which includes the $1.4 trillion borrowed by student debt-serfs–which is only part of the tsunami of cash gushing into the coffers of the higher-education cartel. Yet education & communication (which presumably includes the Internet / mobile telephone service cartel’s soaring prices) is another tiny sliver of the CPI, just 6.6%, a bit more than fun-and-games recreation.

As for housing costs, former Soviet apparatchiks must be high-fiving the Federal agencies for their inventive confusion of reality with magical made-up “statistics.” To estimate housing costs, the federal agency in charge of ginning up a low inflation number asks homeowners to guess what their house would rent for, were it being rented–what’s known as equivalent rent.

Wait a minute–don’t we have actual sales data for houses, and actual rent data? Yes we do, but those are verboten because they reflect skyrocketing inflation in housing costs, which is not allowed. So we use some fake guessing-game numbers, and the corporate media dutifully delivers the “pravda” that inflation is 1.6% annually–basically signal noise, while in the real world (as measured by the Chapwood Index) is running between 9% and 13% annually. How the Chapwood Index is calculated)

As the dissonance between the real world experienced by the citizenry and what they’re told is “pravda” by the media reaches extremes, the media is forced to double-down on the propaganda, shouting down, marginalizing, discrediting, demonetizing and suppressing dissenters via character assassination, following the old Soviet script to a tee.

(Clearly, the CIA’s agitprop sector mastered the Soviet templates and has been applying what they learned to the domestic populace. By all means, start by brainwashing the home audience so they don’t catch on that the “news” is a Truman Show simulation.)

In 2014, Peter Pomerantsev, a British journalist born in the Soviet Union, published Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible: The Surreal Heart of the New Russia which drew on his years working in Russian television to describe a society in giddy, hysterical flight from enlightenment empiricism. He wrote of how state-controlled Russian broadcasting “became ever more twisted, the need to incite panic and fear ever more urgent; rationality was tuned out, and Kremlin-friendly cults and hatemongers were put on prime time.”

Now, he’s written a penetrating follow-up, This Is Not Propaganda: Adventures in the War Against Reality that is partly an effort to make sense of how the disorienting phenomena he observed in Russia went global. The child of exiled Soviet dissidents, Pomerantsev juxtaposes his family’s story — unfolding at a time when ideas, art and information seemed to challenge tyranny — with a present in which truth scarcely appears to matter.

“During glasnost, it seemed that the truth would set everybody free,” he writes. “Facts seemed possessed of power; dictators seemed so afraid of facts that they suppressed them. But something has gone drastically wrong: We have access to more information and evidence than ever, but facts seem to have lost their power.”

“Facts” are a funny thing when the data sources and massaging of that data are all purposefully opaque. Again, inflation is a lived-world example of how “official facts” are clearly massaged to support an essential narrative–that inflation is so low it’s basically signal noise, while in the real world it has impoverished the bottom 95% to a startling (but unmentionable) degree.

This is the reality as inflation has eaten up wages’ purchasing power: Families Go Deep in Debt to Stay in the Middle Class Wages stalled but costs haven’t, so people increasingly rent or finance what their parents might have owned outright Median household income in the U.S. was $61,372 at the end of 2017, according to the Census Bureau. When inflation is taken into account, that is just above the 1999 level.

We’re all against “fake news,” right? Until your content is deemed “fake news” in a “fake news” indictment without any evidence, trial or recourse. This is what happened to this site in the bogus PropOrNot propaganda campaign of 2016, in which every alternative-media website that questioned the “approved narratives” was labeled “fake news” in a classic propaganda trick of labeling dissenters as propagandists to misdirect the citizenry from the actual propaganda (PropOrNot), which by the way was heavily promoted on page one by Jeff Bezos’ propaganda mouthpiece, The washington Post. (Who’s your daddy, WP “journalists”?)

Meanwhile, back in reality, the primary source of data here on is 1) the Federal Reserve data base (FRED) 2) IRS data and 3) content and charts posted by the cream of the U.S. corporate media Foreign Affairs, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

Fake news, indeed. Those individuals who support the “approved narratives” and orthodoxies win gold stars, and so virtue-signaling is now the nation’s most passionate hobby. (Shades of the Stasi…)

In the wake of the 1976 Church Committee revelations on the institutional lawlessness and corruption of the FBI and CIA, the idea that former CIA propagandists and spy masters would be on TV as “commentators” would have been laughed off as a bad joke. Yet here are Clapper, Brennan et al, the “most likely to lie, obfuscate, rendition and propagandize” individuals in the nation welcomed as “experts” who we should all accept as trustworthy Big Brother. (Ahem)

What if every employee in the corporate media who was paid (or coerced) by the FBI, NSA, CIA etc. had to wear a large colorful badge that read, “owned by the FBI/CIA”? Would that change our view of the validity of the “approved narratives”?

Welcome to the USSR: the United States of Suppression and Repression, where your views are welcome as long as they parrot “approved narratives” and the corporate-state’s orthodoxies. “Facts” are only welcome if they lend credence to the “approved narratives” and orthodoxies.

For example, corporate earnings are rising. Never mind estimates were slashed, that was buried in footnotes a month ago. What matters is Corporate America will once again “beat estimates” by a penny, or a nickel, or gasp, oh the wonderment, by a dime, on earnings that were slashed by a dollar when “nobody was looking.” Meanwhile, back in reality, the bottom 95% have been losing ground for two decades. But don’t say anything, you’ll be guilty of “fake news.”

Nolte: Mark Zuckerberg’s Fatal Error — Not Leaving Everyone the Hell Alone

Posted by M. C. on March 21, 2018

They lure us onto their platforms with the promise of unbridled free speech, create their respective monopolies, and then go the full-Kafka against opinions that personally offend them.

Make no mistake, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook are in trouble — not just here in America, but all over the world. The Tech Tyrant has only himself to blame. Had he just left us alone, he would not be so alone or widely viewed as a monopoly with all the inherent risks in that. He would also not be a national pariah. Read the rest of this entry »
