The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity : College Students Across America Are Being Subjected To a Horrid Psychological Experiment

Posted by M. C. on August 30, 2020

Southern Methodist University

“Students must wear masks outside dorm rooms, cannot visit another dorm, etc. Threatened with draconian honor code violations if they violate the rules and orientation was declared all virtual at the last minute. Yet today, the athletes, with permission of and active participation by the University, were permitted to organize a BLM march through campus.”

College, long a fun and liberating experience for many young adults, has become a dreary and oppressive experience for many students living under the weight of a multitude of restrictions imposed at American college campuses in the name of countering coronavirus.

These restrictions are absurd from the perspective of protecting people’s health given that coronavirus is not particularly dangerous. This is especially the case for the teen and twenty-something students. For these relatively young college students, coronavirus generally poses very little risk of death. Further, most such young adults experience zero symptoms to minor sickness from coronavirus infection.

I have written about the draconian restrictions imposed at college campuses in the name of countering coronavirus, with some focus on Duke University, Syracuse University, and the University of Texas and Texas A&M. These are not handpicked examples of campuses whose college administrators have imposed uniquely harsh rules in the name of countering coronavirus. The problem is present at many college campuses across America, and it is devastating for many students.

Over at The Mass Illusion, Jordan Schachtel has collected testimonials of students who are living in depressing prison-like conditions at college campuses across America. It is heartbreaking to read of the forced conversion of an often positive and social campus life into a degrading and isolating confinement. You can read the students’ comments, and some comments from parents as well, here.

The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity : Know Your Rights. Don’t Talk to Cops at the Airport

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

I called my attorney as soon as I got out of baggage claim. He told me that I did the right thing and that he wouldn’t have given answers any different from the answers I gave. It occurred to me, though, that most Americans have no idea what their rights are.

The American Civil Liberties Union has a great article on its website telling people what to do when they are confronted by tin horn authority at airports around America. The bottom line is that if you are an American citizen or a permanent resident (green card holder) you don’t have to.

Cops are tough when they can hide behind each other, behind their guns, behind their badges, or behind qualified immunity. But they’re powerless when faced with the power of the Constitution. Know your rights.

Written by John Kiriakou

I confess to a dislike of the police; any police at any level. I dislike equally local cops, state troopers, federal law enforcement from a myriad of agencies and prison guards. I’ve always said, “Give a man a badge and a gun and you’ve created a monster.” I also believe that my opinion about law enforcement in the United States is in the minority.

Most Americans like and trust the police. We’re bombarded on social media by exhortations to “Back the Blue!” We say “thank you for your service” along with the military at sporting events. I’m something of a “progressive constitutionalist.” I believe in freedom, equality, and individual rights. I’m not going to back the blue.

I had the pleasure of flying back to the United States this week from an overseas trip. The airline socially distanced passengers, so I had an entire row all to myself. It was one of the easiest flights I’ve had in recent memory. I arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport after 10 hours in the air and was happy to be home. I have an app on my phone called “Mobile Pass” that allows me to put my passport, flight information and photograph in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement system so that I can just breeze through Immigration and go on to baggage claim. It saves a lot of time.

‘Come with Me Sir’

I got off the plane at JFK having already completed the Mobile Pass and I went directly to the very short line for Mobile Pass holders. The ICE officer was very nice, but after he scanned my passport, he said, “Please come with me, sir. We’re going to have you talk to one of my colleagues.” I’m not stupid. I know what that means. It means “let the harassment begin.” But I was ready for it.

I was placed in secondary, where I sat for about 25 minutes. Finally, an ICE agent named Officer Oh called my name. He was assisted by Officers Hippolyte and Castellano. Apparently, it takes three armed people to deal with me.

“Have you ever been arrested for a crime?” I wasn’t surprised that was the first question. I’ve said consistently over the past eight years that I wear my conviction for blowing the whistle on the CIA’s torture program like a badge of honor. I said so on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and NBC’s Today Show. It’s no secret.

My response was, “You know I have been. You otherwise wouldn’t ask me a stupid question like that, which has literally nothing whatsoever to do with my travel today.” The ICE agents looked at each other. “What was the nature of your crime?” Oh responded. I think he also didn’t expect my own response.

“I’m going to tell you guys exactly the same thing that I tell your friends at Dulles Airport when they harass me. I’m represented by counsel. I don’t talk to cops. You have no right to detain me. I’m a journalist and I’m going to write about this incident using your true names. And you have no legal right to keep me from entering my own country.”

‘Free to Go’

Again they looked at each other. Finally, Oh said, “you’re free to go.”

You’re damn right I am.

The bottom line is that if you are an American citizen or a permanent resident (green card holder) you don’t have to answer any questions.

ICE can delay you, but they cannot stop you from entering your own country. Tell them that. Repeat it as a mantra if you have to. And remember my personal mantra. It works:

“I’m represented by counsel. I don’t talk to cops. You have no right to detain me.”

Cops are tough when they can hide behind each other, behind their guns, behind their badges, or behind qualified immunity. But they’re powerless when faced with the power of the Constitution. Know your rights.

America’s Riots Are Just the Latest Version of Marxist “Syndicalism” | Mises Wire

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

At the root of the chaos and upheaval on our streets is an attempt at disrupting society and taking more control of it by Marxists, socialists, and “anarchists.”

The fundamental error that syndicalism makes is to think that entrepreneurs and capitalists are “irresponsible autocrats” free to pursue their personal agenda. The reality is that business leaders must follow the interests of consumers in order to further their self-interest in making profits. They have to find correct prices, production levels, and correct means of production. These things are determined by entrepreneurs with various types of feedback from the marketplace.

The riots, looting, and violence against people and their property is mostly motivated to achieve Marxist ideals via syndicalist activity (i.e., violence).

https://mises.org/wire/americas-riots-are-just-latest-version-marxist-syndicalism?utm_source=Mises+Institute+Subscriptions&utm_campaign=bdc838c443-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_08_28_02_44&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8b52b2e1c0-bdc838c443-228343965

The year 2020 is one of the most disrupted times in at least the last half century, maybe longer. Global protests and riots, the covid-19 virus, lockdowns, and police killings of unarmed citizens. Add to that widespread rioting, looting, arson, homelessness, and destruction of property, including the tearing down of statues. This chaos in the streets is being facilitated by mayors, governors, and police chiefs who are unwilling to enforce the law.

The great Ludwig von Mises included a discussion of “syndicalism” in chapter 33 of his Human Action: A Treatise on Economics. Most people have never heard or read of this concept, but it is highly relevant to the situation we find ourselves in today. Mises’s analysis is even more important for understanding and fixing some of the most important problems we face today. In general, I define syndicalism as being able to do whatever you want at the expense of others.

In part, it represents the ideas of French philosopher, Georges Sorel, who thought relentless violence should be used against the institutions of capitalism. This would include the “general strike” so familiar in Europe to this day. This is in direct contrast to mutually beneficial exchange and the social cooperation of the division of labor. His ideas were influential with Marxists, fascists, Nazis, and advocates of unionism.

A Key Chapter in Mises’s Human Action

When I first tried to read Human Action, I found it extremely difficult. I ended up skipping entire chapters and reading through others without understanding the material. Chapter 33 is a good example of that. Today, reading the book is much easier, because we now have things like Jeff Deist’s Human Action Podcast, which now contains a series of interviews on the book, and Robert Murphy’s Study Guide to Human Action: A Treatise on Economics.

In the 1990s I taught a course in Austrian economics at Auburn University, an advanced undergraduate course. It was listed in the catalog next to the econometric and mathematical economics classes. I spent classes reviewing chapters, but the most difficult aspect was trying to relate Mises’s words and concepts to current events. Due to time constraints, I never covered chapter 33.

Fast-forward to more recent times. The Rothbard Graduate Seminar reviews Human Action every few years along with Rothbard’s Man, Economy, and State and other selections during other years. I have always been assigned to teach a section of chapters at the end of the book which includes chapter 33. Once again, due to time constraints and my perceived view of its relevancy, I have decided to skip the chapter. That is, until this year.

What Is Syndicalism?

So, what is syndicalism? Political syndicalism is direct violent revolutionary action against the institutions of capitalism, such as security forces, property, particularly business property, and the rule of law. This approach is often adopted by Marxists, socialists, and fascists as a means of gaining power.

Those employing these means include Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and especially the “anarchist provocateurs” who adeptly turn peaceful protests into violent riots. Of course, there is also some violence on the right, some of which I witness on the campus of Auburn University. But in either case, with mayors, governors, and police chiefs restraining and even defunding the police, the violence often goes unchecked.

The Other Type of Syndicalism

This use of the word “syndicalism” should not be confused with the better-known syndicalism as a social system, which is an alternative to socialist central planning. This system in theory would give workers control over the industries in which they work. They would make the decisions on things entrepreneurs decide in the market, such as wage rates, benefits, hours, production, etc. The workers can do anything they want at the expense of others. But if everyone is raising their prices and reducing output, how can anyone gain from the arrangement? Both forms of syndicalism ultimately rest on the Marxist notions that entrepreneurs and capitalists exploit labor and have no real purpose worth rewarding. Obviously, each industry would want higher wages, higher prices, shorter working hours, and this would result in lower output. Raw material prices increase and get passed on to consumer goods industries, which must pass those increases on to the consumer along with their own increases. This happens across the entire economy. As a result, production plummets and prices become unhinged from market prices. The “economy” would collapse if syndicalism were attempted on an economywide basis.

Democracy Fails to Provide a Solution

With democracy and voting and the military not likely or viable options, an individualist option must be developed to solve the problem. People are arming themselves in various ways. They are using various security devices like cameras and stronger locks. Businesses are hiring security firms and protecting storefront windows. Others are simply moving from cities to the suburbs and beyond. Don’t expect government to solve the problem, although more secessionism and decentralization would surely help.

Erie Times E-Edition Article – Strike Team preps for COVID safety

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

What do think of when you hear STRIKE TEAM!?

Spec ops forces parachuting in with ghostbuster backpacks ready to decimate any virus that crosses their path?

Not in Erie County. It’s painters tape, dots and pool noodles.

Where else but a government agency would you hear pool noodles instead of sunshine, zinc, vitamins C & D to fight a virus.

Here I thought school age children were the least likely to get COVID. Or is it they get COVID and develop immunity, another word you never hear.

Immunity means no control, no power, no mandatory vaccine/digital tattoo/travel passport, no government jobs for those otherwise unoccupied.

Anti-social distance, mask up, keep the fear alive, stifle herd immunity until that 50% or less effective/side effect laden vaccine is swirling through your system.

Next time you hear about a SEAL team performing a mission think, I’ll bet they’re carrying pool noodles.

The Erie County Strike Team has visited 11 schools this summer

Dan Loewenheim looked down at the floor of an Iroquois Elementary School first-grade classroom Friday morning, then made a suggestion to the administrators and teachers gathered around him.

Visiting 10 other Erie County schools in recent weeks has given Loewenheim some perspective on what districts can do to prepare their buildings for class during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You can put down some painter’s tape on the floor at the corners of each desk, so you don’t have to remeasure them 6 feet apart each day after the rooms are cleaned,” said Loewenheim, who is an Erie County emergency management specialist. He has toured schools as a member of the new Erie County Department of Health Strike Team.

The team, which consists of employees from the health department and the Erie County Department of Public Safety, was created specifically to help schools reduce the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks.

“This is a unique combination of departments brought together to help schools prepare,” said Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper, who attended the strike team’s visit to Iroquois Elementary on Friday morning.

EconomicPolicyJournal.com: Why Price Inflation Indexes Are More Fake Than Ever

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

There are restaurants that don’t have outside dining just takeout. I pass them by.

The Jos. A. Bank clothing store in downtown San Francisco has closed. There is a sign in the window of the closed store suggesting I visit their nearest store—in Sacramento, a 2 hour drive.

It goes on and on. The unmeasured decline in goods and services that Cowen references because of the lockdowns is major and certainly not measured by the government indexes. Our standard of living is crashing.

https://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2020/08/why-price-inflation-indexes-are-more.html

Tyler Cowen makes some interesting points in his Bloomberg column:

The most obvious effect of the pandemic is often better understood by the public than by professional economists: It has been an inflationary time, but not in the traditional manner.

The measured numbers indicate deflationary pressures, but that is misleading. In times of crisis, any measured inflation rate becomes much less meaningful as an economic indicator.

Let’s take education, which many American students have been doing online or not receiving much of at all. Whether for K-12 or at the university level, the cost of getting a quality education this year has risen drastically (think private tutors) — and for many individuals it may be impossible altogether. We are seeing deteriorating quality, and thus much higher real prices, yet this does not show up as either a quality adjustment or a price increase in standard calculations.
Or consider health care. For months, Americans were afraid to visit hospital facilities, for fear of contracting Covid-19. The perceived cost of the hospital visit was thus much higher, in terms of anxiety and medical risk, even if the sticker price or reimbursement rate for heart surgery hasn’t budged.
In many parts of the country, the lines at the motor vehicle offices are much longer, or it is much more time-consuming to get your car inspected for state approval. That is mostly due to pent-up demand from the worst months of the pandemic…
Education, health care and government are pretty big parts of our economy. If you add on the lower quality of restaurant visits, reduced sports performances (your ESPN cable package is worth less), and an inability to take preferred vacations and trips, you have many more negative quality adjustments that don’t show up in measured rates of inflation.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Fed and other institutions have declined to make formal adjustments for these changes in the real standard of living…
Inflation measures work best when the consumption bundle is roughly stable over short periods of time, and that just hasn’t been the case this year…
Perhaps most important, price rules and other forms of inflation rules don’t really work in times of pandemic. The very measurement of price inflation becomes arbitrary, and dependent on inertial measurement conventions from normal times, so the numbers don’t have enough actual economic meaning to guide policy.

Cowen makes these points in a wider essay discussing Fed decisions based on traditional price index measures, which I am less inclined to agree with, but his point here on how the quality of goods and services have declined during the lockdown is a very important observation.

Off the top of my head, I can think of instances where it applies to me.

The local Whole Foods maintains a count of the number of customers in its store and makes others wait outside until customers leave to keep the occupancy limited. I really don’t have time for this nonsense (a cost for me) and so I rarely visit anymore.

The Democratic Party won’t be out-Israel’d this fall – Mondoweiss

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

The Democrats are selling a mythic Israel in this race. An Israel where the Labor-Meretz bloc is going to come out of the grave with its seven seats in the Knesset and resurrect the two-state solution. An Israel that is not committed to rightwing leaders, whether you call that Blue and White or Likud. An Israel that doesn’t support Trump by 56-18 percent, according to Haaretz, and hated Obama.

https://mondoweiss.net/2020/08/the-democratic-party-wont-be-out-israeld-this-fall/

The Democratic Party is not going to get out-Israel’d this fall.

Yesterday, Kamala Harris had a conference call with 1800 Jewish Democratic donors and assured them a President Biden will never condition aid over any “political decisions that Israel makes and I couldn’t agree more.” Biden-Harris will show “unwavering support” for Israel. And Biden backed the “largest military aid package” to any country when the Obama administration signed that $38 billion MOU in 2016.

The fact is that despite deep misgivings about Israeli human rights violations in the Democratic base, the Democratic Party has brilliantly and effectively squelched the issue as a possible wedge in the coming election.

Yesterday the Republicans sought to drive the wedge with an ad of four Jewish Democrats voting Trump. But just look at the ad. It’s pathetic. It’s not going to convince anyone.

The Republicans might have been able to drive the pro-Israel wedge if Israel had gone through with annexation this summer. But Israel came to its senses when it realized annexation would have been a giant headache for the Israel lobby. It would have divided the lobby’s big organizations, and Joe Biden would have come out against annexation and the Republicans would then have tried to paint him as the second coming of Jimmy Carter, abandoning Israel.

But if annexation was in the Republicans’ electoral interest, it wasn’t in the lobby’s interest to see the issue made into a partisan football. So Israel swallowed the annexation issue.

The Democrats have a unified line at the top now. Israel is a progressive cause. The self-determination of the Jewish people in their ancient land is something to be celebrated, and we are going to keep pretending we are pushing for a two state solution.

As we continually remind Democrats, Progressive Democrats don’t believe these ideas. They think the two-state solution is a cruel charade for a reality of apartheid, that Israel’s political culture is overwhelmingly rightwing, and that Jewish national “self-determination” is an excuse for rampant discrimination against a Palestinian minority. But the Democratic establishment doesn’t care; those voices will not be heard inside the party and progressives are falling into line. Bernie Sanders spoke for 8-1/2 minutes at the Democratic convention, emphasizing the urgency of defeating a dangerous president, but he was a good soldier and didn’t bring up the Palestine issue.

Senator Kamala Harris visits an Iron Dome missile defense battery in Israel, November 2017. (Photo: Office of Kamala Harris)

The Democratic leadership is terrified by the Israel question because they are afraid it will alienate Jewish donors, and yes, also Jewish voters in Florida (where Jews make up 3 percent of the population) or Pennsylvania (2.3 percent). Though it’s hard to believe Jewish voters would make a difference in Ohio (1.3 percent), and Michigan (0.9).

The progressive street doesn’t like the Democratic stance, but what power does it have right now? Liberal Zionist Rabbi Jill Jacobs lately lectured progressives on how they have to embrace Israel as a “progressive” cause despite its flaws lest they alienate Jews.

While Israel is likely the most divisive issue in the progressive world, setting a litmus test that one cannot consider oneself pro-Israel, or support two states, would divide the vast majority of Jews from the left. Not what we need when fighting white nationalism. . .

She emphasized that Jews like Israel:

Remember that vast (>90%) of American Jews are committed to long-term stability of Israel AND majority oppose current govt & occupation and support two states. Progressive left sometimes forgets part 1. . . All Jewish organizations, and all organizations that truly care about the future of Israelis and Palestinians should speak out loudly for the human rights (incl right to self-determination) of both peoples.

We will tell you that it’s progress that only 90 percent of American Jews are devoted to a Jewish state. That’s down from the 95 percent another liberal Zionist touted last year, and the 99 percent of a generation ago. But it’s still not enough to move the needle for the Democratic Party. Jews are an essential part of the Democratic coalition, especially in the party establishment.

We’d like to think that the Democrats could both fight for Palestinian human rights and fight Trump. The polling is clear that young Dems and Democrats of color want a discussion of Israel. Peter Beinart has come out for one state. Isn’t it time to talk about what the endless fake “peace process” has meant for Palestinians?

But the party is simply too fearful about losing the Israel lobby to go near this. It is going to suppress the debate to hold on to major funders and older Israel supporters, including media figures. If Donald Trump is promoting his Jewish family members, so is Kamala Harris.

Biden has no plan to deal with that Israel except, “Send a message to Bibi, I love him.” He is against annexation but he won’t make a peep when Israel expands the West Bank settlements/colonies. He can’t acknowledge that the two-state solution is dead, even if many Democrats, particularly among the young, are pushing for that awareness. He makes a point of kicking Linda Sarsour to show how much he likes Israel.

Liberal Zionists and the Party leadership are in denial. They haven’t read Sara Roy or Diana Buttu. They just read the New York Times‘ endless promotion of Israel as a robust democracy. They will tell you they had a big victory over Netanyahu with the annexation.

So the issue has been politically squelched. For now.

Gates Suffers from CO2 and Viral Dementia

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

“Billions of dollars have been invested in vaccine development, and one would be foolish to imagine these companies and investors are not going to do everything in their power to turn COVID-19 into a profit maker, and that may well include the use of force. It’s still unclear exactly when a vaccine will be available, but it could be as early as October, or as late as January 2021.”

https://drsircus.com/general/gates-suffers-from-co2-and-viral-dementia/

For a world crippled by the coronavirus, salvation hinges on a vaccine. True or false? You can divide the world between those who think it is true and those who feel it is false. A Grand Canyon lies between the two sides, but we know which side Gates and Fauci are on.

Officially there is no treatment for COVID-19, and that is why they can get away with saying salvation hinges on a vaccine. If there are treatments that work, which there are, there is no need for a vaccine. What kind of people would deny treatments that would help millions? Only monstrous personalities, terrorists of some kind. However, that is precisely what these health officials do—pretend no treatments exist.

There are more than several treatments being offered by different doctors and medical organizations in the world, but none of them are being accepted by the mainstream narrative. Neither the WHO, FDA, or the CDC are behind treatments for the simple reasons they are not vaccines.

I feel sorry for a civilization that can only be saved by a vaccine. Having everyone go out in the sun to build vitamin D plasma levels would be more effective and safe than any vaccine.

It is sad (pathetic) that people even listen to businesspeople and now politicians playing doctor. A new type of terrorism is attacking the world and it has managed to pull off the greatest terrorist attack in history. Never before has any organization been able to attack the entire planet simultaneously.

There Is No One Like Gates

Gates is a special case for he suffers from CO2 and Viral Dementia at the same time, both easily diagnosed conditions. He is also one of the principle ring leaders of this vast viral terrorist organization.

The sunlight of truth never reaches Bill Gates, who is a master of arrogance and deception. Despite all his money, influence and greater than life self-image he seems to have gotten caught with his pants down lying about his relationship with Jeffery Epstein, denying it in his usual sleazy way.

One of Gates foundation’s primary mission is supposed to be to help young women in underprivileged countries, yet Gates met with Epstein at least six times, a man who was preying on young women. Listen to Gates yourself to see and feel what kind of man he is.

Though Gates will never admit it, he is accused of abusing women and young girls with vaccines. No one knows how many children have died from his lust for vaccines. People do die from vaccines, and others come down will a list of vaccine-related injuries, health challenges, some as severe as autism, which has devastated many families. Gates has no problem annihilating doctors who challenge the safety of vaccines because he is cruel.

Prominent Bullshit Artist in the World

New York’s Big Brother Has Gone Bananas – American Thinker

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

The tourist destinations in the mountain states are thriving.  Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks is reportedly doing twice its annual business.  New York State is withering.  Not since Saddam taunted the U.S. into invading Iraq has the world seen so self-destructive a case of narcissism.

https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2020/08/new_yorks_big_brother_has_gone_bananas.html

By Jack Cashill

In reading the New York State travel advisory, I am reminded of one of my favorite scenes from a Woody Allen movie, this one from Bananas.  Having ascended to power, the dictatorial rebel leader Esposito announces his new rules for San Marcos:

From this day on, the official language of San Marcos will be Swedish. … In addition to that, all citizens will be required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check. Furthermore, all children under 16 years old are now…16 years old!

Woody’s character Fielding Mellish cracks, “What’s the Spanish word for straitjacket?”  The Spanish word is camisa de fuerza.  The Swedish word is tvångströja.  In any language, Gov. Andrew Cuomo surely needs one.  It is bad enough that he is running the state by executive order.  Worse is that the orders are nuts.  If Woody Allen were to make a comic version of 1984, he could model “Big Brother” on Andrew Cuomo.

Last week, I flew into Buffalo.  It was my first flight this year into New York, a state in which I have owned a summer cottage for the last 30 years.  Coming from Missouri, a state on New York’s travel advisory, I had to fill out a two-sided form promising that I would quarantine in place for 14 days.  As if.

Missouri has had about 25 COVID-19 deaths per 100,00 people.  New York has had about 165.  In the western part of Missouri where I live, the rate is considerably lower.  No matter.  By some perverse calculation, my return to New York threatened to put the state’s residents at some elevated risk.

To visit my own cottage, I had to promise not to be in public or otherwise leave the quarters that they have identified as “suitable.”  These “quarters” — how quaint — had to have “separate bathroom facilities for each individual or family group.”  More than that, I had to have “access to a sink with soap and water, and paper towels.”

Esposito would have been hard pressed to imagine rules this absurd and unenforceable: “Food must be delivered to the individual’s quarters”; “Garbage must be bagged and left outside by the door of each of the quarters”; “Individuals should self-monitor for fever and other symptoms of COVID-19 daily.”

Big Brother Andy promises that “enforcement teams” will be stationed to “greet disembarking passengers to request proof of completion of the State Department of Health traveler form.”  He isn’t kidding.  My flight had no more than 20 people on board, but two officials were waiting at 9:00 P.M. on a Sunday night to collect our letters of transit.  The penalty for leaving the airport without completing the form is a $2,000 fine and a mandatory quarantine.  Knowing this, I filled mine out.  I wrote on it, “Under protest, self-destructive, wasteful, oppressive.”

My flight to Denver a week earlier was nearly full, but no one who did not have to come was coming to New York.  The state is broke and broken.  Yet it can still afford to create this Byzantine bureaucracy and impose it on those who are compelled to visit, even — hang on — those who drive to New York.  Decrees Big Brother: “Travelers coming to New York from designated states through other means of transport, including trains and cars, must fill out the form online.”

I know a conscientious fellow who did just that.  Health authorities contact him every day to check on his progress.  My friend was given a choice of call or text.  He chose text.  At the beginning, he was asked if he needed any help with food or medicine.  I asked my friend whether the State delivered pizza.  He chose not to inquire.  He was afraid they might.

The tourist destinations in the mountain states are thriving.  Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks is reportedly doing twice its annual business.  New York State is withering.  Not since Saddam taunted the U.S. into invading Iraq has the world seen so self-destructive a case of narcissism.

Pay no attention to New York’s national dominance in COVID deaths.  Nursing homes?  What nursing homes?  I am convinced that Cuomo imposed the travel advisory to creates the illusion that he has so heroically purged his state of COVID that red-state refugees can only screw things up.  I suspect his forthcoming book — American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic — will assure at least the media that this is so.  (And who writes a book during a crisis?)

Come what may, Cuomo has an assured place in history.  He will be the first head of a state to enact a costly, self-defeating law that absolutely no one will follow and, quite likely, no one will be punished for not following.  San Marcos can use a man like that.

Why Affirmative Action Must Go – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on August 29, 2020

And there cannot be one sector that bosses around all the rest in social matters either. The law cannot discriminate without generating forces against the government and its laws. Affirmative Action discriminates and the more that its implications are used to benefit a faction, the greater the social conflicts being generated. If Americans wish to preserve a good government, which in relative terms means an equitable or color-blind government, then Affirmative Action must go.

A rather small number of black organizers and activists used the death of a black man, George Floyd, to accuse the country of systemic racism. Understood, there are always factions forming that promote their causes, but they do not win goodies for themselves unless certain factors are operating on their side. In this case, a whole bunch of American institutions rapidly knuckled under. Even if there is only feigned acceptance of what the BLM activists are selling, nonetheless, all sorts of people and organizations have been kissing ass. Suddenly, businesses and universities are promoting workshops and diversity training. All sorts of ridiculous social behavior are being promoted, and if you do not accept it as an employee or a student, you are asking for trouble.

Not for a moment can one say that all these institutional players have suddenly seen the light and decided to go on a search and destroy mission against the fake enemy known as systemic racism. They have surrendered without a fight for a very good reason, which is that the loud activist minority has a big stick to whip them with. That stick is a legal system and a set of laws that fully support affirmative action in all its forms, manifestations and extensions. The identity minorities can make a lot of legal trouble. They can make boycotts. They can loudly make bad publicity with accusations. They can picket. They can smash windows. The trouble they make would be nothing, absolutely nothing, if they didn’t have legal recourse as a threat. But they do possess this threat. The threat is the Affirmative Action complex, and they can play off this with other threats arising from labor laws. Lawsuits are only the beginning of the troubles that a minority can stir up against institutions, once they have the law on their side. And they do. The negative results of Affirmative Action are broad and ongoing. They are still developing as time passes and as minority groups discover how far they can stretch the law to cover new cases and situations.

Factions do not act out of Christian charity or morality. They take as much as they can possibly get. The law in a society like ours with many factions held in check must not enhance the power of any given faction without endangering the stability of the entire society, and that is what is happening.

The threatened segments are not all going to bend before such threats. A college president, a mayor and a governor can all surrender their institution and the people they are supposed to stand up for because they aren’t losing as much personally as some couple whose home is being attacked.

In the end, Affirmative Action must be curbed. That is the only way to curb the ambitious use of power of minority intellectuals who are pushing to expand their power and reach. This has always been the right thing to do from the moment it mistakenly became law or regulatory edict. It simply has taken a long time for the negative consequences to play out. I doubt that even today there is wide recognition of the damage done to the American polity by Affirmative Action. It has been a far-reaching blunder. It empowered black intellectuals in universities, for example, and allowed them to secure a base where they could gain an unheard of degree of influence on many aspects of university and department policies, including hiring, raises, tenure decisions, department allocations. Affirmative Action is what facilitated the invention and teaching of radical racial ideas in universities.

As a general rule, no government can levy widespread taxes as ours does and then channel those taxes to the benefit of narrow factions. People will not support a government unless there is more or less a widespread or general dispersion of the taxes across broad sectors of the society. There cannot be any grossly inequitable dispersion to any sector, be it banks, medical companies, the military, the politicians themselves, or to a racial minority without upsetting the equilibrium.

There cannot be the fundamental transformation that Obama and BLM wish for because the society won’t take it or accept it without breaking apart. Without equity felt by major factions, the equilibrium that supports government will go out of kilter. It will totter and fail. This failure is not going to happen. Before it can happen, there will be a reaction against BLM, against its agenda, and this will amount to drawing a line against the complex of laws we call Affirmative Action. Sooner or later, the government and the courts will have to halt the expansion and extension of racial quotas, denunciations, labor laws and other racial accessories if the society is to survive as a stable entity.
