FBI launches open attack on ‘foreign’ alternative media outlets challenging US foreign policy | The Grayzone

Posted by M. C. on June 9, 2020

Thus the takedown of the publication by Facebook, with FBI and FireEye encouragement represents a disturbing precedent for future actions against individuals who criticize US foreign policy and outlets that attack corporate media narratives.

Not exactly new news.

https://thegrayzone.com/2020/06/05/the-fbi-launches-open-attack-on-foreign-alternative-media-outlets-challenging-u-s-foreign-policy/

Under FBI orders, Facebook and Google removed American Herald Tribune, an alternative site that publishes US and European writers critical of US foreign policy. The bureau’s justification for the removal was dubious, and it sets a troubling precedent for other critical outlets.

By Gareth Porter

The FBI has publicly justified its suppression of dissenting online views about US foreign policy if a media outlet can be somehow linked to one of its adversaries. The Bureau’s justification followed a series of instances in which Silicon Valley social media platforms banned accounts following consultations with the FBI.

In a particularly notable case in 2018, the FBI encouraged Facebook, Instagram and Google to remove or restrict ads on the American Herald Tribune (AHT), an online journal that published critical opinion articles on US policy toward Iran and the Middle East. The bureau has never offered a clear rationale, however, despite its private discussions with Facebook on the ban.

The FBI’s first step toward intervening against dissenting views on social media took place in October 2017 with the creation of a Foreign Influence Task Force (FTIF) in the bureau’s Counterintelligence Division. Next, the FBI defined any effort by states designated by the Department of Defense as major adversaries (Russia, China, Iran and North Korea) to influence American public opinion as a threat to US national security.

In February 2020, the FBI defined that threat in much more specific terms and implied that it would act against any online media outlet that was found to fall within its ambit. At a conference on election security on February 24, David K. Porter, who identified himself as Assistant Section Chief of the Foreign Influence Task Force, defined what the FBI described as “malign foreign influence activity” as “actions by a foreign power to influence U.S. policy, distort political sentiment and public discourse.”

Porter described “information confrontation” as a force “designed to undermine public confidence in the credibility of free and independent news media.” Those who practice this dark craft, he said, seek to “push consumers to alternative news sources,” where “it’s much easier to introduce false narratives” and thus “sow doubt and confusion about the true narratives by exploiting the media landscape to introduce conflicting story lines.”

“Information confrontation”, however, is simply the literal Russian translation of the term “information warfare.” Its use by the FTIF appears to be aimed merely at justifying an FBI role in seeking to suppress what it calls “alternative news sources” under any set of circumstances it can justify.

While expressing his intention to target alternative media, Porter simultaneously denied that the FBI was concerned about censoring media. The FITF, he said “doesn’t go around chasing content. We don’t focus on what the actors say.” Instead, he insisted that “attribution is key,” suggesting that the FTIF was only interested in finding hidden foreign government actors at work.

Thus the question of “attribution” has become the FBI’s key lever for censoring alternative media that publishes critical content on U.S. foreign policy, or which attacks mainstream and corporate media narratives. If an outlet can be somehow linked to a foreign adversary, removing it from online platforms is fair game for the feds.

The strange disappearance of American Herald Tribune

In 2018, Facebook deleted the Facebook page of the American Herald Tribune (AHT), a website that publishes commentary from an array of notable authors who are harshly critical of U.S. foreign policy. Gmail, which is run by Google, quickly followed suit by removing ads linked to the outlet, while the Facebook-owned Instagram scrubbed AHT’s account altogether.

Tribune editor Anthony Hall reported at the time that the removals occurred at the end of August 2018, but there was no announcement of the move by Facebook. Nor was it reported by the corporate news media until January 2020, when CNN elicited a confirmation from a Facebook spokesman that it had indeed done so in 2018.  Furthermore, the FBI was advising Facebook on both Iranian and Russian sites that were banned during that same period of a few days.  As Facebook’s chief security officer Alex Stamos noted on July 21, 2018, “We have proactively reported our technical findings to US law enforcement, because they have much more information than we do, and may in time be in a position to provide public attribution.”

On August 2, a few days following the removal of AHT and two weeks after hundreds of Russian and Iranian Pages had been removed by Facebook, FBI Director Christopher Wray told reporters at a White House briefing that FBI officials had “met with top social media and technology companies several times” during the year, “providing actionable intelligence to better enable them to address abuse of their platforms by foreign actors.”  He remarked that FBI officials had “shared specific threat indicators and account information so they can better monitor their own platforms.”

Cybersecurity firm FireEye, which boasts that it has contracts to support “nearly every department in the United States government,” and which has been used by Department of Homeland Security as a primary source of “threat intelligence,” also influenced Facebook’s crackdown on the Tribune. CNN cited an unnamed official of FireEye stating that the company had “assessed” with “moderate confidence” that the AHT’s website was founded in Iran and was “part of a larger influence operation.”

The CNN author was evidently unaware that in U.S. intelligence parlance “moderate confidence” suggests a near-total absence of genuine conviction. As the 2011 official “consumer’s guide” to US intelligence explained, the term “moderate confidence” generally indicates that either there are still differences of view in the intelligence community on the issue or that the judgment ”is credible and plausible but not sufficiently corroborated to warrant higher level of confidence.”

CNN also quoted FireEye official Lee Foster’s claim that “indicators, both technical and behavioral” showed that American Herald Tribune was part of the larger influence operation. The CNN story linked to a study published by FireEye featuring a “map” showing how Iranian-related media were allegedly linked to one another, primarily by similarities in content.  But CNN apparently hadn’t bothered to read the study, which did not once mention the American Herald Tribune.

Finally, the CNN piece cited a 2018 tweet by Daily Beast contributor Josh Russell which it said provided “further evidence supporting American Herald Tribune’s alleged links to Iran.” In fact, his tweet merely documented the AHT’s sharing of an internet hosting service with another pro-Iran site “at some point in time.”  Investigators familiar with the problem know that two websites using the same hosting service, especially over a period of years, is not a reliable indicator of a coherent organizational connection.

CNN did find evidence of deception over the registration of the AHT. The outlet’s editor, Anthony Hall, continues to give the false impression that a large number of journalists and others (including this writer), are contributors, despite the fact that their articles have been republished from other sources without permission.

However, AHT has one characteristic that differentiates it from the others that have been kicked off Facebook: The American and European authors who have appeared in its pages are all real and are advancing their own authentic views. Some are sympathetic to the Islamic Republic, but others are simply angry about U.S. policies: Some are Libertarian anti-interventionists; others are supporters of the 9/11 Truth movement or other conspiracy theories.

One notable independent contributor to AHT is Philip Giraldi, an 18-year veteran of the CIA’s Clandestine Service and and an articulate critic of US wars in the Middle East and of Israeli influence on American policy and politics. From its inception in 2015, the AHT has been edited by Anthony Hall, Professor Emeritus at University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada.

In announcing yet another takedown of Iranian Pages in October 2018, Facebook’s Gleicher declared that “coordinated inauthentic behavior” occurs when “people or organizations create networks of accounts to mislead others about who they are what they’re doing.” That certainly doesn’t apply to those who provided the content for the American Herald Tribune.

Thus the takedown of the publication by Facebook, with FBI and FireEye encouragement represents a disturbing precedent for future actions against individuals who criticize US foreign policy and outlets that attack corporate media narratives.

Shelby Pierson, the CIA official appointed by then director of national intelligence in July 2019 to chair the inter-agency “Election Executive and Leadership Board,” appeared to hint at differences in the criteria employed by his agency and the FBI on foreign and alternative media.

In an interview with former acting CIA Director Michael Morrell in February, Pierson said, “[P]articularly on the [foreign] influence side of the house, when you’re talking about blended content with First Amendment-protected speech…against the backdrop of a political paradigm and you’re involving yourself in those activities, I think that makes it more complicated” (emphasis added).

Further emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding the FBI’s methods of online media suppression, she added that the position in question “doesn’t have the same unanimity that we have in the counterterrorism context.”

Fifty Years Later, NSA Keeps Details of Israel’s USS Liberty Attack Secret

Posted by M. C. on June 9, 2020

Over the course of Israel’s remarkable territorial acquisition and
military victory, it allegedly committed a war crime by slaughtering Egyptian prisoners of war in the city of El Arish in the northern Sinai.
Bamford argued in his 2001 book, “Body of Secrets,” that the USS
Liberty’s proximity to the Sinai, and its ability to intercept Israel’s
motives and activities during the Six-Day War, might have prompted
Israel’s attack on the vessel.

https://theintercept.com/2017/06/06/fifty-years-later-nsa-keeps-details-of-israels-uss-liberty-attack-secret/

On June 8, 1967, an Israeli torpedo tore through the side of the unarmed American naval vessel USS Liberty, approximately a dozen miles off the Sinai coast. The ship, whose crew was under command of the National Security Agency, was intercepting communications at the height of the Six-Day War when it came under direct Israeli aerial and naval assault.

Reverberations from the torpedo blast sent crewman Ernie Gallo flying across the radio research room where he was stationed. Gallo, a communications technician aboard the Liberty, found himself and his fellow shipmates in the midst of an attack that would leave 34 Americans dead and 171 wounded.

This week marks the 50th anniversary of the assault on the USS Liberty, and though it was among the worst attacks in history against a noncombatant U.S. naval vessel, the tragedy remains shrouded in secrecy. The question of if and when Israeli forces became aware they were killing Americans has proved a point of particular contention in the on-again, off-again public debate that has simmered over the last half a century. The Navy Court of Inquiry’s investigation proceedings following the incident were held in closed sessions, and the survivors who had been on board received gag orders forbidding them to ever talk about what they endured that day.

Now, half a century later, The Intercept is publishing two classified documents provided in the cache of files leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden related to the attack and its aftermath. They reveal previously unknown involvement by Government Communications Headquarters, the U.K. signals intelligence agency; internal NSA communications that seem to bolster a signals intelligence analyst’s account of the incident, which framed it as an accident; as well as a Hebrew transliteration system unique to the NSA that was in use at least as recently as 2006.

NSA’s USS Liberty Incident Classification Guide10 pages

The first document, a formerly unreleased NSA classification guide, details which elements of the incident the agency still regarded as secret as of 2006. The second lists a series of unauthorized signals intelligence disclosures that “have had a detrimental effect on our ability to produce intelligence against terrorist targets and other targets of national concern.” Remarkably, information relevant to the attack on the Liberty falls within this highly secret category.

Though neither document reveals conclusive information about the causes of the assault, both highlight that at the time of their publication — approximately four decades after the incident — the NSA was determined to keep even seemingly minor details about the attack classified. The agency declined to comment for this article.

The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity : Coronavirus Shows Why We Need Separation of Medicine and State!

Posted by M. C. on June 9, 2020

No laws were passed denying these rights. Even that would be illegal and
immoral. But what happened was worse. They were denied these basic
rights by governors, county judges, and even local mayors who used the
coronavirus outbreak as an excuse to rule by decree. They stole power
that was not theirs to take and wielded it at all levels to force
America into three months of house arrest.

http://ronpaulinstitute.org/archives/featured-articles/2020/june/08/coronavirus-shows-why-we-need-separation-of-medicine-and-state/

Written by Ron Paul

It seems like only yesterday. Americans were denied the right to go to their churches. They were denied the right to visit their loved ones in the hospital. They were denied the right to open their businesses and go to work to provide for themselves and their families. They were denied the right to go to restaurants, to bars, to hair salons.

No laws were passed denying these rights. Even that would be illegal and immoral. But what happened was worse. They were denied these basic rights by governors, county judges, and even local mayors who used the coronavirus outbreak as an excuse to rule by decree. They stole power that was not theirs to take and wielded it at all levels to force America into three months of house arrest.

Then, in the midst of stay-at-home orders across the country, the same governors and local officials who locked Americans in their homes suddenly came around with their keys and threw open the doors. Suddenly not only was it OK to go out into the street, it was required to go out into the street!

What happened? A cure? A miraculous vaccine? No. The officials who locked Americans up found a cause they felt required Americans in the streets to protest. Police had killed a black man, Floyd George, in their custody in Minneapolis and suddenly the need to protest trumped the need to “stay home, save lives.”

Suddenly the same health “experts” who told us we must not gather in crowds or there will be death in the millions from coronavirus issued statements supporting gathering in crowds. An open letter on the Floyd George protests signed by more than 1,200 doctors and other health professionals clarified that they “do not condemn these gatherings as risky for Covid-19 transmission.” However, they wrote, “this should not be confused with a permissive stance on all gatherings, particularly protests against stay-at-home orders.”

Did the coronavirus develop some kind of superior intelligence enabling it to distinguish between those who were congregating for a “good cause” and those who were congregating for a “bad cause”? Of course not. What has happened from the beginning of this shameful coronavirus episode is the politicization of public health at the hands of authoritarians.

Two prestigious medical journals, The Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine, were forced to retract studies they had published concluding that Hydroxychloroquine was harmful to Covid patients. The rush to print the studies looks very much like a political move rather than one based on scientific principles. Once President Trump revealed that he was taking hydroxychloroquine the mainstream media and even “expert” journals began attacking the drug.

This is what happens when medicine merges with the state. We get the worst of both. We get career bureaucrat Dr. Fauci telling us we can never shake hands again and that we must stay home until a vaccine is found. Meanwhile, doctors across the globe are reporting that this variation of the coronavirus is disappearing on its own.

We have a tradition of separation of church and state in the United States for good reason. The merger of state and church invites oppression and corruption. We need to adopt this same approach to medicine and the state. We now see how this merger has produced the same kind of widespread tyranny and corruption.

Privatize the Government Police Monopoly – LewRockwell

Posted by M. C. on June 9, 2020

https://www.lewrockwell.com/2020/06/thomas-clark/privatize-the-government-police-monopoly/

By

Many Americans think that public demonstrations and protests are the solution to ending police brutality and the murder of non-convicted civilians.

I maintain that private municipal security guards, operated for profit, would be a far more effective way to protect lives and property, and a far more effective way to deter police originated racial discrimination.

With that in mind, I propose a more radical approach:  Privatize the government police monopoly.

How would privatization work?

Each local municipality would solicit proposals from private, for profit security firms to patrol neighborhoods and to apprehend criminals as needed.  The current system of criminal and civil courts could be maintained. Private residences and privately-owned businesses would supplement with their own security measures, both in person and surveillance.

Would the current policemen and women be out of work?  Not at all.  The experienced service of the vast majority good ones would remain much in demand. Instead of working for the government, they would instead work for the citizens.  Each local municipality would contract with a private security firm.

Competition is superior to monopoly

The force of competition would increase and ensure the quality of law enforcement and decrease cost, as with all products and services now provided by the free market.

Any private constable who abuses his or her authority, or who is negligent, to the detriment of citizen satisfaction, would face swift disciplinary action and termination.  This would be a much stronger incentive for performance than the current system, where it is often very cumbersome to remove a wayward government police officer.

Would you like a satisfaction guarantee?

As with most free market services, it would soon become the norm for private security firms to offer a satisfaction guarantee.  If they fail to protect a home or a business location from damage, they would be obligated to cover all costs.

The private sector has a built-in motivation to avoid racial discrimination.  Discrimination costs money.  I will go out on a limb here and say…beating up and killing customers of any race is not good business.  Customer satisfaction will prevail and negate bigotry any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Privatize the government police monopoly and we will all be safer and happier.

Erie Times E-Edition Article- Record virus case count was ‘data dump’

Posted by M. C. on June 9, 2020

Erie County residents were surprised Saturday when the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 31 COVID-19 cases in the county.

The good news is that the high number was due to a backload of cases reported by one of the state’s commerical labs

It is not known at this time how long ago those people were tested and how it might affect the county’s ability to advance to the green phase

Has anyone figured out whether Erie County has 3 or 4 COVID “related” deaths?

How can the county not know when the tests were taken? This puts the whole state and county system in question until a full audit is performed.

“is not known”. What is known is that Erie County lives and lively hoods are dependent on how this operation is run. Is this data dump a one time occurrence or has it affected Erie County from the start?

Imagine scaling this up to New York City and Italy then add the government payouts and you will know why I do not take any COVID statistics at face value.

It will take years and Wikileaks before we know the truth, if ever.

Erie County residents were surprised Saturday when the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 31 COVID-19 cases in the county.

It was the county’s highest one-day number since the pandemic started.

The good news is that the high number was due to a backload of cases reported by one of the state’s commerical labs, said Nate Wardle, press secretary for the state health department.

Wardle said in an email that “data dumps” like these are taken into consideration by state epidemiologists when tracking diseases.

“That is taken into consideration, as the cases may not be from just the last several days,” Wardle said.

It is not known at this time how long ago those people were tested and how it might affect the county’s ability to advance to the green phase of the state’s COVID-19 reopening plan.

Erie County reported 370 cases as of Sunday. It also reported that the number of negative cases has increased to 6,647.

There are 225 recovered patients and 139 active cases, according to the county.

The state Department of Health reported that Erie County had 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday, increasing its total for the county to 378 cases.

State and county numbers can differ based on the time of day cases are reported, among other factors. Contact David Bruce at dbruce@timesnews. com.

Coronavirus Pandemic: South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Stayed the Course | National Review

Posted by M. C. on June 8, 2020

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/06/coronavirus-pandemic-south-dakota-governor-kristi-noem-stayed-the-course/

By

‘The people themselves are primarily responsible for their safety.’

Pierre, South Dakota — The coronavirus crisis hasn’t been kind to the reputations of many governors.

New York’s Andrew Cuomo held effective news conferences that at first burnished his image, but he’s now ducking responsibility for sending virus patients back into nursing homes where the disease promptly spread. Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer is now seen as a scold who on the one hand has kept pot dispensaries open but, on the other, last week told residents who’ve gone three months without hair care to just “Google how to do a haircut.”

Among the governors whose reputation has clearly been enhanced is South Dakota’s Kristi Noem. The 48-year-old Republican, who still ranches her family’s land, didn’t issue a shelter-in-place lockdown order for her state. “The people themselves are primarily responsible for their safety,” she said in a public statement in April. She added that the state and national constitutions “prevent us from taking draconian measures much like the Chinese government has done.”

But that didn’t mean South Dakota didn’t take clear steps to control the virus. Noem issued an executive order in March urging the elderly and those with preexisting conditions to stay home and encouraging employees to practice social distancing and to telework if possible.

“We do follow Center for Disease Control guidance,” Noem told Greg Kelly of Newsmax TV. “But we also made decisions that were best for South Dakota. South Dakota is not New York City.” Indeed, per square mile, New York has more than 26,000 residents per square mile, while South Dakota has only 12.

Delingpole: Black Lives Matter and Antifa in London – Where Are the Grown Ups?

Posted by M. C. on June 8, 2020

This was the ‘largely peaceful” demo, let it be noted, in which a police rider was thrown backwards off her horse onto tarmac after crashing into some traffic lights. The horse had bolted because members of the ‘largely peaceful’ crowd — whose black clothes and masks, of course, were purely a defence against coronavirus and had nothing to do with anonymity — thought it would be a good idea to chuck missiles including a bicycle and a distress flare at it.

If this is what a ‘largely peaceful’ demo looks like, heaven knows what a ‘slightly violent’ one might involve.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/06/08/delingpole-blm-and-antifa-in-london-where-are-the-grown-ups/

by James Delingpole

When I opened Britain’s bestselling tabloid conservative Sunday newspaper, I was greeted by a double-page spread showing a vast mob of Black Lives Matter activists marching on Downing Street in London.

What most shocked me was the caption, which read as follows:

Powerful statement: they came in their thousands, driven by an urge to be heard that overrode the lockdown. A stark, simple message – black lives matter – was etched on the home-made placards they carried as they marched on Downing Street yesterday – before the protest became marred by violence.

Wait. What?

Since when did Black Lives Matter / Antifa become such an unimpeachably noble and worthwhile cause that even the right-wing end of the MSM now thinks that it is its job to suspend journalistic principles, conservative values and the interests of its readership?

Since when did even conservative publications consider that it’s the right and moral thing to do to provide covering fire for an increasingly thuggish, openly hard-left, and borderline terroristic group which is less obviously to do with ‘racism’, but which has almost everything to do with smashing Western civilisation?

Mind you, if you think that’s bad, wait till you see the BBC’s version of the weekend’s ugly, violent demonstrations.

Headlines like that – ‘largely peaceful’? – are almost beyond satire. But I thought Madeline Grant had a pretty good stab…

Meanwhile, on social media, one of the most widely shared stories involves footage of a statue of 17th slave trader Edward Colston being pulled from his pedestal in Bristol city centre, dragged to the docks and dumped into the harbour.

Here is a BBC-endorsed historian seizing the opportunity to virtue signal that she knows slavery is a bad thing. (Which no one had ever realised up till this point, obviously…)

Old statues don’t get toppled and dragged into the sea by accident. It requires advance planning — bringing ropes or steel cables along, for instance. Were the citizens of Bristol all consulted, do we think, as to whether or not this piece of their city’s history should be ripped down and consigned to oblivion in the name of hard-left activism? Were the British people asked whether they support having the history of the built environment gradually chipped away by leftist iconoclasts pretending to be cross about the killing of a man 4,000 miles away on the other side of the Atlantic?

Yet the overwhelming narrative across social media today and, depressingly, across much of the mainstream media is that these ugly, sinister shows of force by the triumphant radical left are something almost charming and admirable rather than something we should all fear.

Instead of calling out Black Lives Matter for what it is — essentially the race-baiting branch of Antifa — politicians, even government ministers are kowtowing to it.

As also, of course, even more depressingly are the police – several of whom have been caught on camera abasing themselves before the mob by going down on the knees as if to beg for mercy for their ‘white privilege’.

Let’s be clear what is happening here. Under the pretext of protesting the killing of a black man by a white police officer in Minneapolis, hard-left terror cells across the West are taking to the streets and fomenting chaos and violence with a view to overthrowing Western civilisation. These very nasty but cunning and well-organised thugs have used every propaganda trick in the book to persuade gullible teens and early-twentysomethings on social media accounts like Instagram that these protests are good because they’re against ‘racism. And don’t forget, if you’re not with them, then you’re against them and that makes you hateful just like Lily Allen explained in that song she wrote a few years ago about how racism is bad.

But the fact that these rallies largely involve so many gullible, socially-insecure, bubble-headed, virtue-signalling white middle-class kids whose frontal lobes have not yet formed and who want to show their college friends Bella, Minty and Jo Jo that they care about racism too does not let our politicians and our police and our media off the hook.

What is going now across the world, on our streets, is domestic terrorism – conducted by a violent minority whose interests and aims are entirely antithetical to those of the decent, law-abiding majority.

If the authorities — not to mention our MSM — can’t even recognise this very basic, entry-level point, then we’re heading for a whole heap of trouble.

5 Million Cases Worldwide, 650,000 Deaths Annually: The Seasonal Flu Virus is a “Serious Concern”, But the Wuhan Coronavirus Grabs the Headlines

Posted by M. C. on June 8, 2020

https://www.globalresearch.ca/flu-bigger-concern-wuhan-virus-grabs-headlines/5701932

First published on January 27, 2020. Figures quoted for the coranavirus pertain to late January

The common flu virus will infect millions across the globe. It can be easily spread and will especially strike the young and the elderly. But this is not what has been described as the Wuhan virus. The common flu is far deadlier. This is not to downplay the Wuhan coronavirus flu, or to give it its medical name, 2019-nCoV.

The common flu causes up to 5 million cases of severe illness worldwide and kills up to 650,000 people every year, according to the World Health Organization

In the US:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that so far this season, there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses for the 2019-2020 season, 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the U.S. The CDC reports there have been 54 reported flu-related pediatric deaths this season from Influenza B viruses. (The Hill)

China’s Coronavirus

Keeping track of Wuhan virus figures is difficult, not least because of the two-week incubation period. The coronavirus outbreak, which is concentrated in Wuhan, a major transport hub in central eastern China, has so far killed 56 and infected almost 2,000.

The initial symptoms of coronavirus are typically similar to those of a cold or flu, which means it is hard for people to know if they are infected, especially given that the outbreak has coincided with flu season. The mayor of Wuhan said on Sunday evening that he expected another 1,000 or so new cases. But the National Health Commission in Beijing said the number of people currently under medical observation for the virus is 30,453. This raises immediate questions about how and where they are being observed.

The response to the outbreak has been criticized with people complaining that announcing restrictions hours before they could be properly implemented allowed people to evade quarantine. The strict restrictions also risk causing resentment and distrust of authorities and the health messages they deliver.

A massive construction effort is being undertaken in Wuhan to build a 1,000-bed hospital for the virus patients.

In the past week [mid January], the number of confirmed infections has more than tripled and cases have been found in 13 provinces in China, as well as the municipalities Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Tianjin. The virus has also been confirmed in Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

The virus seems to have a 3 percent mortality rate. However, this could be an overestimate since there may be a far larger pool of people who have been infected by the virus but who have not suffered severe enough symptoms to attend hospital and so have not been counted in the data.

Consequently, it is difficult to gauge just how contagious it is. A crucial difference is that unlike flu, there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus, which means it is more difficult for vulnerable members of the population – elderly people or those with existing respiratory or immune problems – to protect themselves.

The common flu does not grab the headlines. But attach a foreign name to a virus – such as Ebola, Zika and Wuhan – and then the headlines flow.

Apart from the obvious health concerns, there is a political dimension. Some countries, including the US, France, Australia and Japan have suggested that they want to evacuate their citizens from Wuhan and nearby areas. Just how this would take place is unclear.

Images of foreigners being airlifted or bussed out of Wuhan, while Chinese citizens remain, could see passions rise. At the very least, it will appear that there is special treatment for foreigners.

The streets of Beijing this morning are eerily quiet. Residents of the capital would normally be celebrating Chinese new year, the year of the rat, that started on Saturday, by attending temple fairs.

All such fairs have been cancelled. Apart from the family fun on offer at the fairs, they provide a setting where families can pay homage to deceased relatives. Fake money and food would be burnt to appease the spirits of the deceased and ensure good health prosperity for the year ahead.

There is no anger on the streets but a sense of confusion and apprehension. This coming week should see hundreds of millions of people return from the hometowns where the celebrated the new year to their cities of work.

A clearer picture will then emerge of the scale of the problems facing the authorities.

Nolte: Dr. Fauci Is Either a Liar or a Fraud

Posted by M. C. on June 8, 2020

Here we are stating the obvious. But is anyone listening?

F word warning at the end of the full post.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/06/07/nolte-dr-fauci-either-liar-fraud/

by John Nolte

…Was all his talk about concern for public health, his duty to tell it like it is no matter the personal or political fallout, just a big lie? Is he a fraud who still believes these mass gatherings are a nightmare scenario, but is unwilling to use his massive public platform to say so out loud because shaming protesters who hold the “approved” views among America’s hideous elite would risk Fauci feeling the disapproval of those elites?

Or is he a liar, does he in fact know the coronavirus is nowhere near as deadly as he played it up to be? Is he a liar who misled us into agreeing to destroy our amazing economy in order to undermine the Bad Orange Man’s re-election?

Either way, Fauci’s a sociopath…

Be seeing you
