This is a rehash of a recent post but it can’t be helped. The following was submitted to the Erie Times-News. The response was typical of what I receive when submitting guest editorials and complaining about the butcher that edits letters – Nothing.
Caroline Little of the Newspaper Association of America in the 5 May Erie Times-News complains about government treatment of the press. Particularly how the NSA hacked reporters’ phone records. It is a “sobering time for the newspaper industry”.
The media had their chance to stop the NSA but there is more for them to worry about. Read the rest of this entry »

A letter writer in the 26 April 2014 Erie Times-News is bemoaning the fact that because he is registered as neither a Democrat nor a Republican he cannot vote in the primary. We see the same issue arise every election cycle.
Political parties are nothing more than clubs. A club is a group of like-minded people who share common interests. These clubs in question are polling their membership for their candidates in the general election.
Do you think the Elk club would like members of the Moose club walking in off the street and voting on Elk club officers? I think not. Read the rest of this entry »

I just read a letter in the Erie Times-News where the writer was talking how we should be getting tough with Syria for gassing innocent civilians. My first thought was I have to respond in the paper to enlighten this poor soul about Turkey’s responsibility. The writer probably has limited his news intake to newspapers and Bob Schiefer. I had already used up my one a month letter allocation and could not respond in a timely manner. But Hey! The Erie Times should be doing this as part of the responsibility they have taken on to keep the public informed.
Didn’t happen, not gonna happen. Read the rest of this entry »

William G. Sesler, former PA state senator, writes in the 6 Oct Erie Times-News that there is no substitute for the US in foreign affairs. Let us just say there is no one quite like the US in foreign affairs. He starts out
Let’s first consider the issues arising from Syria’s use of chemical weapons on Aug. 21 that killed more than 1,300 people, including more than 400 children. These acts were done in direct violation of international law.
While it is possible the government used gas the UN investigators have not laid blame on anyone. Iraq’s gas weapons which we never found were supposedly sent out of the country, presumably to Syria.
And where did Iraq get poison gas? The US of course along with anthrax, so Hussein could take out Iran. See here
Iran has hated our guts ever since the CIA overthrew their government and installed the Shah. Supplying chemical and biological weapons to Hussein did not help. The WMD issue is not a winner for us.
Poison Gas and anthrax. No substitute for that in a successful foreign policy. Read the rest of this entry »

The Erie Times-News recently had an article describing how three local people were chosen as beta testers for Google Glass. As a comic book reader in my youth I recall the ads for x-ray glasses with the spiral shapes on the lenses. That is what I think of when I hear of Google Glass.
The testers were given twenty minutes of training by Google. No mention was made in the article about any data banking issues in Google training or by the testers themselves. One problem is the data is probably being collected automatically with the user not being aware. The guilt factor is lessened assuming there was some guilt there to begin with. Here is my response-
Today’s front page describes how a local teacher, student and businessperson are beta testing Google Glass. When you meet Google Glass wearers on the street ask:
Am I being photographed, video or voice recorded? Read the rest of this entry »

The Erie Times certainly knows the Constitution is getting buried deeper every day. When it tells the people otherwise, that Obama will protect the Constitution, they are a willing parter in the deception.
Homage is paid to the inauguration. In particular telling us how Obama will “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution”! Let us see, first things first.
First Amendment – Obama wants to control the pesky internet to keep those lying extremists and terrorists from leading us astray. The real reason is that mixed up in all the internet gobbledy gook is the embarrassing, disgusting truth about what our government does. Think Wiki leaks and climategate emails. Musn’t confuse the people with the facts. Read the rest of this entry »

The Erie Times editorial of 23 Dec advocates more gun control laws in the wake of Sandy Hook. No surprise there, they are an anti-gun paper.
Pat Cuneo is the editorial voice. ’nuff said?
The mainstream media and government is concentrating on gun control. To paraphrase myself in the last post, we had a high school hunting club where many brought rifles and shotguns to school, hunting before and after school. The only gun violence we heard about was massacres in Viet Nam.
What is different now?
Alternative media, primarily Libertarian and paleo-conservative, have the same question and are looking elsewhere. Violent movies, violent computer games, the psychiatry biz and their friends the pharmaceutical industry.
How many of these whackos are on a mental health drugs that makes them kill crazy?
Why isn’t the Times addressing this?
The paper advised us to vote for a progressive, corporatist, anti-capitalist candidate in Obama. The logical extension is this is the Times agenda also. You say “but the Times accepts gun sales advertising and has a hunting column”. That non-sequitur can be explained.
Money. Read the rest of this entry »

So What is the Real Issue? It is not Ed. It is his Enabler.
We had an incumbent president that tried to appoint an admitted communist and capitalism hater, Van Jones, as green czar. Obama said he wants to destroy the coal industry. He inhibits oil drilling in US waters so drillers can go to other countries to help them “catch up”. He admits he is an advocate of redistribution (stealing) of your money. He wants to grow government and run private companies (GM). He goes to NATO and the UN to get an OKey Dokey to go to war instead of congress. He has given himself the right to detain or execute anyone, anywhere without representation or habeas corpus. He uses drones for indiscriminate execution and premature endings of Afghan and Pakistani weddings. He will use the UN to implement domestic gun control (the Erie Times should be OK with that). He panders to unions with Obamacare waivers and screwed auto company investors to the UAW’s advantage.
If the Erie Times thinks a drone addicted, progressive, mercantilist, corporatist, UN run New World Order advocate like Obama wants to promote peace and freedom, reduce the deficit and government size they should get out of the business now. Read the rest of this entry »

This begins with Jim Thompson’s editorial in the Oct 31 Erie Times. He is taking Rep Mike Kelly to task.
Kelly has done nothing to cancel Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy, a massive redistribution of wealth to the top 10%.
Obama has stated he is in favor of wealth redistribution. The difference appears to be to whom the money gets redistributed. No mention that every analysis I have seen says the top 20% pays 80% of the tax. No mention the 53% of earners pay all the income tax. Read the rest of this entry »

A recent letter commented on Romney’s tax (Romney’s Plan Doesn’t Add Up) plan in Sunday’s Erie Times. The writer says it doesn’t add up. He is right. No one’s does. He says lowering taxes won’t cut the deficit. Right again if you assume the economy won’t take a jump as it did after the Bush II cuts. It is apparent to me that government has grown into a monster.
